I’ve been making my way through Decoding Despair during this rather ridiculous cold snap here in NYC. Honestly, it’s been the perfect setting to really take my time with each chapter rather than rushing through.

Much like Ali Tamaseb’s Super Founders broke down startup success into digestible patterns, Khayretdinova does something similar for psychiatric R&D and care. She balances anecdotal storytelling with a clear analytical framework, helping you see exactly where the cracks in the current system are—and how tools like AI might actually help fix them.

What I appreciate most is the balance. Far too often I find books looking at AI getting bogged down with noisy buzzwords and hype, ultimately lacking real substance. Instead, Khayretdinova's book offers a detailed, sober (though occasionally you might get to feel some of the highs and lows through various anecdotes) at how artificial intelligence and neuroscience can converge to address the challenges in psychiatry today and in the future.

I’ve really enjoyed savoring this one. If you are looking to grasp the evolution of psychiatric R&D without the buzzwords (and a number of anecdotal vignettes that really drive home the impact and struggle of mental health) - this is a solid place to start.

I absolutely love this book.
As someone living with bipolar disorder and periodically going through depressive episodes, reading it felt genuinely important to me. First of all, I'm impressed that the author is writing about serious and heavy topics in a simple and accessible way. She uses the language anyone can understand. The story draws you in from the very first pages and doesn’t let go.

Beyond that, what Mariam is doing truly matters. I believe, this is exactly what artificial intelligence should be used for: improving people’s lives in places where there used to be a gap, silence, or lack of support.
Thank you for addressing such an important topic with care, clarity, and empathy.

P.S. also it was kinda nice and comfortable to read because of the page color and the font.

As a non-professional in psychiatry, I was able to learn a lot thanks to the author’s engaging style and ability to present the big picture while maintaining strong attention to detail.
The way the book combines these insights with AI, which is both a powerful and increasingly important tool, helps illuminate new ideas and discoveries in the field.
I believe the author and the team have created something valuable, and I hope their work finds great success and helps make the world a better place.
