HeadStrong: The women of Rural Uganda

by Dan Nelken

The women of Rural Uganda presents a groundbreaking collection of photographs and personal stories from a diverse group of working women in rural Uganda who share their experiences of war, kidnapping, resilience, family obligations, and faith. The women's names, ages, and trades for the titles acknowledge their agency. By incorporating the women's personal experiences, HeadStrong creates an intimate documentary context for the portraits. Collaborations with local advisers and activists have ensured that the work remains authentic and respectful, striking a balance between visibility and sensitivity to each woman’s unique circumstances.
