Krista can smell disease and decay. She walks through life being able to pinpoint what is wrong with the people around her, and can tell whether or not they have long to live. She’s spent the last few years moving from town to town, looking for someone to help, someone who needs a second chance at life. But she didn’t plan on staying in a small town, and she didn’t plan on finding someone to love… in fact, she didn’t plan for anything that Cedar Creek had in store for her.
Language: R (35 swears, 1 "f"); Mature Content: PG13; Violence: PG13 Baum writes unique paranormal characters, and the idea of the deathtakers is no different. I love the supernatural powers that are used subtly by Krista as she does her best to blend in with normal humans. The ending was unexpected and offered a satisfying conclusion. I read the sneak peek first chapter of the sequel, but I liked this one enough by itself that I don't feel the need to continue on with a new main character. The mature content rating is for alcohol use, innuendo, and sex; the violence rating is for mention of suicide and some blood.
This was an excellent story, predictable in some ways but very original in its premise. It was well told and I liked the characters very much, both the main characters and the secondary ones. The love story was sweet and believable which is always a plus. The small town setting was perfect and I could practically feel what it was like to live there. A highly recommended read.
I’ve read all of S.L. Baum’s books and liked most of them. The Deathtaker is my new favorite, taking over that position from Baum’s first book, A Chance for Charity. Part of that is I like being introduced to new characters, what makes them special, and the intricacies of the new story world. This book grabbed me immediately when the prologue gave us a sample of what makes Krista special and a glimpse of that quality at work. I quickly became invested in Krista, the difficulties her life’s work created for her, and saw what the main difficulty or conflict she was going to have to deal with in this story was going to be. How that played out was both satisfying and a setup for what I expect will be an ongoing series.

Being a deathtaker, Krista never put down roots. After stopping in a small town, the draw to stay over takes her. She finds her next save, but also something else...love. Now, she has to try and keep her secret, but like in most small towns nosey people like to talk. On a fateful Christmas Eve....things are going to change!
I liked this book. It was different. The good kind of different. Deathtaker? I haven't read that before. That's why I was excited to read this book and I was not disappointed. Krista and Sam are likable characters. There is no cliffhanger yay for that!! Check it out for a good read.
