say it ain’t over….i just got them back!

these days, i’m not likely to read the second book in a series, much less the sixth, so the fact that ta white has managed to make me claw at the gates of my enclosure for this book says a lot.

overall, this was a solid addition! i missed these characters and their found family very much and t.a did amazing with engaging us in their journey even this far into the series. we were able to catch up with familiar faces (kirajin my platonic soulmatism #1 bestie duo finally reunited again) and say hi to a few new ones (can’t wait for gus’s spin off). kira continues to remain a class act in how to write a competent but also fun fmc. i’m surprised at the lack of kiragraydon, but as someone who loves just a pinch of romance with her action and plot, this was perfect!

i actually saw someone post a prompt recently asking people what they would like to see more of in books these days and a comment said “friend groups where they’re all friends with each other and not just existing for the mc” and this series is a perfect example of that and why i love it so much!

i will admit, plot wise - this is not ranking high for me. politics and in fighting are the stars of the show driving the conflict of this book forward. the climax also fell a bit flat, feeling like we moved from one scene to the next, rather than a build up as i’ve come to enjoy in the previous books..…but regardless, with a world as vast as this, i understand taking time to set everything up for the final act! i’m still excited to see what the next installment will bring (just pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease don’t make us wait too long…ᵖˡᵉᵃˢᵉ)

This series is a firm favorite, and this book is more of the same. I love the complex, twisting plot and the layers of politics and factions. I think I'm going to do an immediate re-read so I can get all the details settled in my brain. After the re-read, I'll update the review with that stuff in spoiler tags, because there were some critical developments in this book and I want to keep them all straight.

It feels like we're building towards an endgame, and I wonder if the next book is the last. The author hasn't said that, and I would be sad to see it end ... though I also respect a well-told, complete arc.

Also, for those who haven't seen (I follow the author's blog, because I love this series so much and am obsessed enough to want every speck of info), she's going to be releasing a serial about Gus (one of the 43) on her blog starting very soon. She already teased us with a snip of it, and I can't wait. I'm assuming it is going to underlap this book a bit, as Gus comes into play in the 3rd act and it will be fun to know what she was doing behind the scenes before then. And where she goes from here, because where things were left with her is intriguing (yes her - she's a woman who has a scientific plant name, and so goes by Gus for short).

Immediate series re-read Jan 2026
Alright, series re-read done, so I can really digest all the details. I'm just going to slap all this in spoiler tags.

So that's where I landed with it. Can't freaking wait for the next one!

Gosh, I love this series! I’ve had the pleasure to have started it when that very first book published over six years ago. And it has been an absolute wild ride ever since! Admittedly it has also been terribly frustrating at times, as well, because each time a book ends I’ve had to wait for the next book before knowing how the characters are and what will happen next. Case in point, it has been over two years since the last book published. The series has a considerable cast of characters, so trying to catch up and remember the specifics of so many plus adding on a whole new set in this book was a challenge without having read the previous books recently. I was so excited to finally get this installment, however, that I couldn’t stop and revisit the others before diving in. I do think it makes for a good reason to re-read the series though! Not a hardship at all, and will absolutely give me a better insight going forward.

SO… all the juicy stuff? The plot-line of this installment is not quite as action packed as others (although there is action a plenty), it revolves more around the politics of the houses, the power plays at work behind the scenes and delves more into the problem and emotional nuances of the 48. We meet a few new and interesting characters that look to be important in upcoming books, plus further explore how JIN, a full grown genius/savant, will handle suddenly living in a child’s body. While Kira is still the main character, there are so many beloved supporting characters that make-up this amazing ensemble that at this point it can’t be anything other than a can’t-put-down read! And, that is the true genius of Ms. White’s writing ability.

One other thing that made this specific book really stand out is that unique writing style. A couple of years ago I had the absolute pleasure of spending time with and getting to know the author while doing a special feature on her for the magazine. I absolutely adored T.A. as a person after our conversations. The character of Kira in this book positively sang with T.A.’s personality. I don’t think I have read any of her books, even in this series where I see the author’s own personality so strongly as with Kira in this story. Those quick come-backs, pragmatic outlook and attitude, whip-smart ability to access situations and respond I found in the author are manifest so perfectly in the character of Kira. Add to that the author’s extensive background and knowledge of military ops, attitudes and camaraderie that infuses the relationship Kira and her cohorts have adds a deeper level of believability and make this story an extra delight to devour!

As much as it hurts me to say... I did not enjoy this book even half as much as I'd hoped to.

Maybe my expectations were too high after waiting two years for it but I will attempt to put into words why this 6th installment felt lackluster.
For comparison's sake, I'll also say I've re-read the previous books quite a few times ( the 5th one not as much ) or at the very least gone back to revisit specific scenes that had me on the edge of my seat. There's no such scene or feeling in this one.

🚫ATTENTION! MILD SPOILERS AHEAD! 🚫

My main issue is Kira. I don't know when or how this happened but the strategic way she's always seemed to approach situations, her maturity and fine balance between levity and gravitas, the planning five steps ahead and us along with the characters being able to see the culmination of her plans... All of that was absent. This book nerfed Kira in so many ways that other characters' awe and fear of her didn't hit the mark or have the emotional payoff you would expect or got from the previous installments. Not only that, she herself as a character did not grow or change throughout this book AT ALL. I can't think of anything she accomplished in this book that wasn't out of sheer dumb luck. If anything, what you would expect from Kira, we got from Jin and supporting characters such as Finn, Raider and Dylan instead. She also seems to be willfully blind to a lot of unsettling truths about herself and the 43, mainly. Even Jin. She promises herself to tackle them later but then never does. Case in point, Pallas.

Speaking of Jin, he's likely my favourite part of this book and the reason why I was even able to give it 3 stars. I like seeing the ramifications of the change he's gone through and him being so out of sorts. You get to see how the past several decades delayed his development in some ways and watch him struggle with that. I did find it odd how towards the end he suddenly overcomes what plagued him throughout the entire book and is just able to perform in a way he wasn't before. Another disappointment was not getting more insight into his familial relationships and we don't even get to see him with his brother.

Another favourite is Raider. He's just as unhinged as always but he also seems steadier, like he's found his place. We briefly get to see Elise but we don't get to see all of them together ( Elena, Elise, Raider and Kira or even just the first three ) and again, that felt disappointing. Their complicated relationship has been one of the main driving forces of this series and this book does not give you the insight one would expect.

This book tried to do too many things at once and it failed spectacularly in some of them. I did enjoy the crumbs of information we get about Tuann society and history along the way, the political and conflicting agendas of all involved. Unfortunately, the book mostly relies on threads that have no real payoff because they survived on newly introduced characters that we have no attachment to so their actions have no emotionally relevancy or payoff for me as a reader. The ones that would've drawn that connection, the author seems to abandon in favour of a convoluted plot: the Elise storyline, Graydon and Kira's relationship, Jin's parental issues, Joule and Selene, Devon and Jin, Kira's powers which are still largely unexplored, her relationship with the 43. Her, Pallas and the Curs (one of which is unaccounted for). One of the interesting plot points which was the aftermath of her confrontation with the Osiris was not explored and others used as "cliffhangers".

Nerfing the main character for a plot point that only bears fruit in one specific scene and quite frankly, wasn't all that satisfying, was not a great decision. It would've been better to continue her struggle and training to control ki and actually learn about her abilities. We constantly hear about how she's one of the strongest of the lost children and I'm seriously beginning to wonder... Why? How? We know what she got from being bonded to Jin but, and I could be wrong, we haven't seen the results of the Tsavitee's experiments. We also haven't even seen her go head to head at full strength against anyone six books into the series and we're just expected to believe what we're told rather than see it. It was also a bad decision to have the catalyst of the events that unfold, or Kira's discovery of them, be a character that we didn't get a lot of in previous books. A better choice would've been Maksym, for example.

I was disappointed when I realized I wasn't enjoying the book. I was more than halfway through and felt like I hadn't gotten any answers. The story really would've benefited from taking place in the Tuann's home planet and staying close to home this time around, exploring the tension there (political and familial ) and then introducing the vaster ramifications towards the end, instead of sending everyone off to different parts of the universe which had already been done in the previous book. Because of that, the book felt repetitive with an unrecognizable main character, rather than a continuation of everything that made it amazing in the first place. I'll still read the next one because I've enjoyed the story for the most part but my level of excitement for the series has sadly gone down considerably. The plus side is, if I have to wait another two years for the next book, at least it won't be as painful this time.

Kira and her motley crew are back! Picking up a few months after the events of book 5, this book jumps right into more action. An attack against the Tuann sets up Roake to take the fall. Kira is barred from helping find the perpetrator but that doesn’t stop her from finding trouble, as usual. Instead she is sent on another mission that will help clear Roake’s name, as long as she stays out of the way of Greydon and the Inquisitors. As only Kira can do, she’s immediately embroiled in an intergalactic adventure, hunting down a trafficking ring that crosses Tuann and human borders.

This entry in the adventures of Kira and Jin is a bit predictable and, for me, missed the mark. Book 5 left us with the Tsavitee on the run and finally felt like we were getting to real action. This book took a big step back from that bigger storyline and instead focuses on the Tuann infighting with a sprinkling of the 43, the Tsavitee, and human-Tuann relations..

I felt like this was a bridge book. A lot is talked about or introduced, but nothing is really resolved regarding the bigger story. We get little nods towards plot points from previous books, but I felt it was just more mystery and less plot. The side quests that are introduced in the book do get wrapped up by the end but I was left vaguely unsatisfied by the conclusion.

I am getting a little fatigued by the constant mystery. Nothing is ever solved in regards to the 43, the Tsavitee or the Masters, or even Kira’s personal relationships. Everything gets pushed to “later” and yet even more characters/intrigues are introduced in this book. In regards to the plot, everything is talked about in veiled terms or oblique references. I love this world, but it feels like the story has stalled. Maybe the author doesn’t have an end in mind and is instead flying by the seat of her pants. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I feel the story should be reaching a climax and wrapping up. Instead we got another installment that feels a bit stale in regard to adventure, and we are no closer to an end for the overarching storyline.

I received an early copy of the book and my honest rating is a 3, maybe a 2.5. I do like the promise of this world and it’s a solid book and I kept reading until the end, though I did find it harder to get through than previous books. I’m holding out hope that the next book will be a solid story with more resolution. I hope the author has plans to wrap up Kira’s story soon and can give her the ending she deserves.

T.A White did it again, another whirlwind ride through space!

This series is the definition of found family; Kira has adopted many people from many walks of life and they all come together and I love that we are always being introduced to someone new.

All the characters have such individual personalities that I feel so many authors miss these days, they all feel alive and I'm never forgetting who is who, because they are all so interesting and have their own sense of self.

Is there romance? Yes, but it is a subplot, always feels like a little bonus when we get some but not the main focus, which I really appreciate because the story and characters are exceptional).

I would definitely say that there is a lot of political intrigue in this book, but not in a bad way. I feel everyone has an agenda and there are so many different branches of the plot that are slowly coming together. Would I have liked to learn even more than we did this book? Yes... but also, I feel like while we learn new things so many more things come to light that opens even more branches for us to explore.

I hope that there are a few more books left in the series that lead us to some spin offs, def going to be shipping a spin off for two characters we got to meet at the end of this book, if you have read let me know if you can guess the new couple I am shipping.

This is my all-time favourite series, and probably my most re-read, I'm looking forward to when the audio drops so I can read this one again.

Everyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read this series.

Echoes of Insurrection Is A Stunning Return to Everything I Love About T. A. White

Echoes of Insurrection is exactly why I keep coming back to T. A. White’s work: she delivers stories that feel alive, characters who breathe on the page, and worlds that refuse to let you go even after the final chapter.

This installment is sharp, emotionally resonant, and beautifully paced. White balances high-stakes tension with intimate character moments in a way that feels effortless. The relationships whether forged in loyalty, conflict, or reluctant trust, carry a depth that makes every interaction matter. And the worldbuilding continues to be one of her greatest strengths: layered, textured, and full of history that enriches every scene without ever slowing the momentum.

What impressed me most is how Echoes of Insurrection manages to feel both expansive and deeply personal. The action sequences are vivid and gripping, but it’s the emotional undercurrents. the quiet doubts, the hard-won courage, the evolving bonds that give the story its staying power. By the end, I felt that familiar T. A. White ache: satisfied, but already craving the next chapter in this universe. I wouldn't mind a spin-off about the children.

If you love character-driven fantasy with heart, grit, and a heroine you can’t help but root for, this book is an absolute standout. T. A. White continues to prove she’s in a league of her own.

So excited for this book I have reread books 1-4 in the last 3 weeks and currently on book 5! 📚

…….

I swear this series is just so damn good. 😍 Every single book leads to more questions, more intrigue, and more adoration for all of the characters! I never expected this story to be so long, involved, and nuanced, but I love every page of it. At this rate, I hope there are still 4-5 left to go, although I hope to not have to wait two years between each installment again. 😅

Always Stellar

As usual I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. Will need to reread it more slowly and then will reread the whole series again to really savor the whole thing. That’s what I usually do with really exceptional series and authors, which are unfortunately rare in any genre. Only a handful of people are at this level of writing ability in the kind of stories I enjoy.
T.A. White is one of the few authors I have ever read that never lets the reader down. Her books are always interesting - full of wonderful characters, plot, dialogue - you name it. Unlike many authors who write an interesting beginning and then falter, this authors books in every series just keep getting better. She never lets you down, in the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a series. This is the sixth installment of the Firebird Chronicles and despite everything that’s happened, all the wonderful hours I have spent reading about Kira, Jin & Co., I feel like we’re still in the middle of the story. The worlds she creates and their entertainment value just keep getting better… Every single one of her books have been exceptional and I am in awe of her talent and so thankful for the joy she has brought to my life through her work.
The only downside of someone so good at what they do is that despite evidence to the contrary, T.A. White is not actually superhuman and can’t churn something out every month. I’ll wait patiently, (or maybe impatiently inside), for when the best author going nowadays, in my opinion, puts out another book.

Honestly, what can I say that I haven’t said before. This series continues to raise the bar, I am sooo happy we focused on interpersonal relationships in this iteration - namely Jin, Kira, Finn and the 43.

I kind of suspected where we were heading with the 43 so that was delightful to have those suspicions confirmed.

Sorry Ms authour ma’am I fear we might need a full length novel for Gus and not just the weekly blogs.

All in all, amazing addition and so grateful it’s not the last book in the series 🥹💗

Another Slam Dunk Addition to the Series

I swear I go through withdrawals when it comes to this series and these characters. I can’t get enough of their personalities and how more of their story is revealed with every book.

The new characters introduced in this book add a whole new level of intrigue about the 43. The dysfunctional family-vibe really can’t be beat and I love seeing the interactions between Kira and Jin with the 43 as we get introduced to new characters and old ones drop-in. I NEED more about Gus and their story 👀.

I’m obsessed with the new developments with Jin. It’s amazing to see the transition of him in this book trying to get his feet under him and there is this weird dichotomy between his personality and his new looks. Adds the right amount of hilarity to so many of the more tense moments!

So much was accomplished in this book but so much left to discover, I’m already anticipating the next book in the series and how these characters will continue to progress in their roles. I see many a re-read in my future while I wait for the next book to be written!

Echoes of Insurrection was everything I expected plus more; the author outdid herself. It swept me away into a space opera where we were dodging the enemy, them shooting-pew-pew, flying through space to find answers to clear Roake’s case. I had so much fun I didn’t want it to end. A sensational story from the first to the end.

At first, I had some difficulty because I couldn't remember who was who and what their relationship was with Kira and Graydon. Then, of course, the author picked up the pace, Jin (formerly J1N) did his part, and the story flew by very quickly. That is in my opinion, a real shame because who knows how long we'll have to wait for the next installment, especially since the current arc is far from over and now Kira's “brothers and sisters” (the formerly 43) are playing an increasingly important role.

Yay!!! Jin and Kira are back!!! I honestly didn’t know if we’d ever get a flesh and bones version of Jin, so when TA White concluded the last book the way she did, I was both completely surprised and absolutely thrilled!

This book takes place five months after the last one ended. TA White did a really good job of making Jin’s foray back into a body both believable and comical. She focused on things that were harder for him now as a biological without making it sad by having him experience relatable scenarios the reader can easily empathize with. It was really interesting to see more from his perspective to get a better idea of how his mind works. We’re told in previous books about what a mastermind he is, but I felt like we got a better glimpse into his personality (and the ruthlessness that’s been mentioned) in this book. I basically got a Jin I didn’t know I was missing and I’m totally here for it!

We don’t see a lot of the younger characters in this installment, but it seems like TA White has them going on some amazing adventures that we’ll hopefully learn about later on. We do get more of the Raider/Finn/Talon trio. They’re all very different but fit together as a team so well. I was laughing out loud continuously from their banter. I’m excited to get to know Talon more because he’s hilarious.

Anyway, I obviously loved this book and can’t wait to see what happens next! Five stars! Highly recommend!

not going to rate... its meh. I was looking forward to it but so many things disappoint. I'm actually tired of Kira, tired of her weird ass relationship with Graydon, tired of the authors writing and her overusage of certain words and yeah, just kind of bored at this point... so if there is a another book after this or any spinoffs, this is where I stop at least for quite some time. six books is too long for such a little amount of character growth and where I thought the romance might be building to something sexy and epic, its blah, with capital B, and I liked Graydon too, kind of a bummer.

To my absolute joy, this is not the last book in the series. Yay!

These books are amazing. I love every single one of them and the series is in my top 5 all time favourites. The writing is great, the characters are so intricate and incredible. This world the author created is simply stunning to me.

While I do have to re-read the previous books to remember and make sense of all the details and characters, it's worth it.

This book was almost all action. Fast paced and twisty, but in a good way.
Jin, as always, was my favourite. I also loved seeing how much Kira evolved and matured as a person, compared to the first books. There were definitely some scenes that underlined the differences between her and past-Kira.
Finn also got more sarcastic, I hope it keeps happening.

As always, I never know what to expect as the story unfolds, but I'm never disappointed.
My only tragedy is the time I have to wait between books.

Can't wait for the next one.

When Intrigue Starts to Wear Thin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (borderline 3.5)

Up until now, I’ve happily given every book in The Firebird Chronicles five stars, but Echoes of Insurrection didn’t quite reach that level for me. While I still enjoyed it overall, this instalment was more frustrating than satisfying.

One of my biggest issues is the separation of Kira and Graydon for most of the story. Graydon is absent early on, and we still don’t have real answers about what’s happened to him since his coma. When they are reunited, they’re quickly separated again due to yet more political manoeuvring. That ongoing lack of emotional and narrative payoff around Graydon’s condition really tested my patience.

The politics, too, are starting to wear thin. The constant infighting between the five great houses, the endless scheming, the hunt for traitors, and Kira’s perpetual status as an outcast feel repetitive at this point. I struggle to believe that a society so desperately short on children—and still traumatised by their loss—could be this shortsighted and self-destructive in its behaviour. I kept waiting for meaningful growth or change in the system, and it just never came.

There is a mystery driving the plot, but it begins with the brutal slaughter of an entire group of people. While the trafficked children are ultimately saved, their families are still gone, their lives shattered, and the trauma unresolved. That resolution felt incomplete and emotionally unsatisfying.

Jim’s return in a biological body was one of the elements I was most curious about. He’s no longer the Tin Man but a real boy in the flesh—though not truly a child, trapped instead in a cloned child’s body. We get hints of what’s carried over from his previous existence, but not enough depth to really explore the implications. That felt like another missed opportunity.

Perhaps my biggest frustration, though, is with Kira herself. For all that she’s portrayed as the Phoenix and a legendary military leader, I don’t see the planning, strategic thinking, or tactical brilliance that would justify her fearsome reputation. Much of the story feels like stumbling from one crisis to the next rather than executing a deliberate, well-considered campaign.

In the end, this book lands at about a three-and-a-half for me, but I’m rounding up to four because I still care deeply about the series and its characters. I just hope future instalments offer more progression—both politically and personally—because this one left me feeling stalled rather than propelled forward.

3.5 stars - As filler books go, this was pretty okay. I'm calling it filler, as it doesn't advance the overarching questions / storylines that have been running through this series. Instead we take a little side step, mainly I think to give Jin a chance to get used to his new physical form. And I get why, this in no way could have been a smooth transition and this side-adventure allows him, and it seems all his allies to become accustomed to the new him. (It would have been too distracting if added to a 'big overarching' story themed instalment)

There was a lot to like here, though I found Kira's journey to the enclave a little boring, and too many new characters (who are all acting suspicious) go along with her and I had a hard time keeping track of who was who.

The most intriguing addition to this story was the '43' - yet even there the author failed to deliver, a lot of what went on with them happened off page, and I want so much more than that. In fact the author could have disappeared Caius's entire squad - who all seemed a little amateur for such a key Roake figure - and just had Kira forced to work with the '43' solving this mystery and trying to bring to fruition their plotting and plans. And the whole Jin maturing/rising from his own ashes could have still occurred within that story.

Too many things/people were cast aside rather casually - Elise awakening barely rated a page or two. Talon is given nothing to do. Finn feels majorly sidelined in this as well. Kira's health battle - never really mentioned. And a lot of issues/problems were raised, but obliquely and then danced around and abruptly dropped. Were they not important? Or are we being set up for future books? Hard to say.

I wasn't a huge fan of book 5 - too many POV's (thankfully author cut way back on that habit this time) and the action didn't take off until the 60% mark. And this follow up felt a little too shallow and underwhelming - but I remain in love with this world and these characters so I shall continue the journey.

Just one thing - I would love it if the next book had the '43' making a claim on Jin & Kira. That would certainly be fun to watch.
