When Owen finds a deaf woman on the shoreline of Stepping Stones Island, he at first thinks she's been gravely injured, since she doesn't answer his calls and questions. He's so stunned by the realization of his mistake that he doesn't get off on the best of terms with her. He's even more stunned when he reports for his new undercover job as a schoolteacher and finds her again as the new principal he's there to investigate.

I know several deaf people (our church has a deaf church on site) and I've always thought it would be nice to be able to communicate with them, but keep "not having time." I need to make time!

Another thing I really appreciated was that they didn't get all swoony over body parts. No sweaty six packs, etc etc. Thanks, Katy Lee! :)

I read romance so that I can feed the part of my brain which just wants to read and enjoy without overanalyzing. Most of these find their way back into circulation at doctor's offices, in hospital waiting rooms... Wherever someone might need a few moments' escape through reading.

I'm keeping this one.

It has the unexpected departure from the usual by featuring a protagonist who is deaf and another who deals with the cruelties dealt to someone perceived as different because he is struggling to understand that regarding is own deaf son. The story grabbed my heart when, at its end, the protagonist and the son are still deaf --- no miracle cure in sight --- and the father is still struggling but, along with the community into which they settle, learning to accept and understand that what they see as disability is part of a whole, functioning identity.

While I am not Christian and this is, essentially, a type of faith inspired romance, I felt inspired by the subtle messages of faith, acceptance, and forgiveness wound through the mesh of suspense, intrigue, false leads, and downright harrowing situations. There is no sex or impropriety within the novel; it is simply the story of a man and a woman getting over their respective past tragedies, coming together, and developing a healthy respectful adult relationship.

These characters have depth and development; the stereotyped love situations got thrown right out the window with this story!

This little book was a big surprise. Author Katy Lee has bravely approached a style of writing that I, personally, have never seen before. The heroine of our story is deaf, and communicates mainly by ASL, and usually through an interpreter. When I first realized this, I was intruged, and curious how Ms. Lee would handle the dialogue. Not only was the signing was written beautifully, it gave insight into the thinking of one who is deaf and the way they view and approach their gift.

The DEA has sent Agent Owen Matthews to Stepping Stones, Maine to uncover a marijuana smuggling operation, the prime suspect being the new high-school principal, Miriam Hunter. Miriam has considered it a priviledge and honor that her childhood town would ask her to be the new principal of a hearing-school. But she finds the town to be very cold and even hostile. After betrayal and threatenings, Miriam finds an odd comfort in the help of Owen Matthews, agent-undercover as a substitute English Lit teacher. Their odd connection? She is deaf, as is his son. Will they learn to understand each other? Or will she go to prison for a crime she didn't commit?

Katy Lee's writing is superb, and while her story is a bit "unreal" the people of Stepping Stones certainly aren't. This little book was surprisingly clean (I'd let my 13 year-old sister read it.) For light pool-side reading, this is the novel for you!

Warning Signs is a riveting, emotional read that had me turning the pages well after I should have turned the lights out. Featuring Miriam, a deaf high school principal, and Owen, a guilt ridden DEA agent, the story revolves around the hunt to uncover a drug smuggling operation in the quaint town of Stepping Stones, Maine. Katy Lee poignantly taps into the heroine's emotional scars left over from childhood and her fears of not being viewed as a whole person due to her being deaf. This is mirrored in the hero, who is battling his own feelings of guilt due to his deaf son and a tragedy in his past. As Owen attempts to solve the case and protect Miriam, we see his hard shell begin to crack. Stepping Stones becomes the third main character due to its rich, layered history and picturesque appeal. The inspirational message is layered throughout the book in a seamless and uplifting way. The depiction of the deaf heroine is moving, memorable and very respectful. I highly recommend this suspenseful, emotionally satisfying novel that had me guessing all the way till the big reveal.

I usually don't enjoy love inspired suspense books, they never seem that suspenseful or realistic, but this one was nothing like those. I completely loved Warning Signs! It was everything a suspense book should be.

I honestly didn't really read the synopsis of the book before I read it, so I didn't realize that the main character, Miriam, was deaf - this came as a surprise, the nice kind. I really liked having a main character that was so different than the norm. And while most people would consider being deaf a disability, Miriam didn't think of herself that way and would get irritated when anyone called her that. I liked the analogy used to describe deafness, that it's sort of like when you visit a country where you don't know the language would you be considered disabled?

The mystery about what was really going on in Stepping Stones was wonderfully written. I thought I knew who was behind it right away, but then I kept changing my mind and then when the culprit was revealed I was surprised - never saw it coming!

The romance in the book was so sweet and perfect! Miriam and Owen are perfect compliments to each other.

I heartily recommend reading Warning Signs if you love suspense or a good mystery. This was a great story and probably one I'll end up reading again.

This is Love Inspired Suspense at its best!

There are tons of things I love about this book. It’s fast paced. The villain is a mystery so the story keeps you guessing. It has a perfect blend of romance and suspense.

But what makes this particular LIS book stand out for me is it’s unique heroine.

She is an avid swimmer and a principal of a small regular public school in Maine and she’s deaf. She refuses to let her physical challenges keep her from going after her goals.

These characteristics make for many insightful comparisons and intriguing twists. Equally compelling, are the wonderful lessons the story conveys, such as transforming how we think about, and interact with, those who are different from us, in particular the deaf.

Katy Lee wrote a story that kept me engaged from chapter one to the very end. Her DEA officer has to learn that hanging on to guilt hurts the ones we love the most. He has the perfect heroine that shows him how to love himself and offer himself to others, no holding back. The author does a brilliant job of showing the isolation that deafness can cause. She gives use a heroine that does not put limits on herself despite her mother's and society unease with someone that is different. Katy Lee tackled a tough subject and did it well.

First off this was my first book by Katy Lee and it won't be my last..it was fabulous...a tear jerker..
This was the most touching book, and it's filled with suspense...The Warning Signs were there, they wanted her off the island..Why? She was t quite sure..

Miriam Hunter was brought to Stepping Stone Island for a reason. She thought it was for her skills, and she learns it was for something different...The thing is she's deaf, but this didn't stop her from being the best darn principal at a hearing school.

DEA Owen Matthews is brought in to find out about the drug operation going on in this small town. When everything points to Ms. Hunter he isn't sure about it- well that's until he see's with his own eyes the drugs they have found in her house, She's in deep trouble, but he has a bad feeling. So he helps prove her innocence,

As Miriam and Owen spend time together things start to unravel. He see's her in a different light, and she opens up his eyes..

Amazing book...I highly recommend so you can see what happens. See what is going on between them? What did she open his eyes up too?

My favorite line:

"A man's search for the blessing of forgiveness. A women's search for the blessing to belong".

Warning Signs is the first book I've read by Katy Lee, but I don't think it'll be the last! I'm a huge fan of the Love Inspired Suspense line and Warning Signs was another great read.

I loved the characters - they felt so real! I couldn't help but feel for Miriam because of the things she had to deal with in her life and Owen because of his guilt over something that had happened earlier in his life. I also thought the plot was very good and the story held my attention.

Overall, Warning Signs was a great book and I loved reading it! I recommend it to fans of inspirational suspense novels.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Maybe as much as 4 1/2. A good strong novel with engaging characters, and a female protagonist who (with one exception) did not wait to be rescued by a man. It also presented the first person I have read, and I have read a lot of these books, overcoming disability. Finally, the ending is amost movie ending sweet.

This book was amazing. You will smile, cry, laugh, and truly be in suspense. I happen to be totally blind, and really related with the character in this book who happens to be deaf. I really think this author did a fabulous job portraying people with disabilities in the light that we really are living in. This book was extremely real and every day I deal with people that don’t truly see who I am because I am blind. I think they feel they will catch what I have. LOL but thankfully I serve A wonderful Savior, and those who believe as I do who happened to be blind should be blessed to know the first face they will ever see is Jesus. If anyone wants to friend me as a result of reading this review you are all welcome to do so I welcome any friends who read the same genre that I do. Thanks for reading and have a fabulous day.

Another great suspenseful read from Katy Lee. Maine is a state I want to read more about and learn more about. Thanks to Katy Lee for setting this story there and taking on the challenges encountered by the deaf community. This was a very inspirational and thought provoking story. I look forward to reading more books by Katy Lee.

I won a copy of "Warning Signs", love inspired suspense novel by Katy Lee. I really enjoyed reading this book, as it was a cozy book to curl up with on a Sunday afternoon, a quick read but packed with suspense and inspiration and hope.

Owen Matthews, the Federal Drug Enforcement Officer, next assignment took him to the Maine island town of Stepping Stones. He had been requested by his friend, Wesley Grant, the Island's sheriff, requiring Owen's undercover expertise to solve a recent marijuana problem at the Stepping Stones High School. The drugs had appeared about six months ago, soon after two new residents had moved to the island. Owen had grown up on the mainland and had kept in touch with Wes.

Owen had been involved in a boating accident that took the life of his wife, Rebecca and left his son, Cole deaf. His son would never have a normal life again...and for that he blamed himself. Cole is living with his dead wives' parents over in Bangor.

The principle of the High School, Miriam Hunter, was the number-one suspect, regarding the recent in flex of marijuana into the region. Her assistant and sign interpreter, Nick, had a prior arrest for possession of marijuana. Wes believes that Ms. Hunter and her assistant have a connection with a Canadian drug cartel.

Owen meets Ms. Hunter with Wes, and is introduced to Nick. Owen had remembered Miriam from yesterday, out on the rock, as he made his way in by a vessel to the island. But Owen didn't believe that Miriam was involved. He also didn't let on that he understood sign. This was his cover up, and away of listening in on their conversation. Owen would be working at the High School as a substitute English teacher, and see what he could learn.

But Miriam had a troubled past, and was receiving numerous prank calls on her TTY..." Get off the island if you know what is good for you..."
She doesn't know who to trust.

Innocent people start to get hurt...and Owen must solve this mystery.

GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT

Miriam Hunter hoped to shrug off the stigma of her hearing impairment when she returned to Stepping Stones, Maine. Yet Owen’s help may not be enough when someone decides to keep Miriam silenced~~~permanently.

Boy I hope there is a sequel to this one… I don’t think I have been on the edge of my seat and unable to put down a book for a long time…. but with this book I surely was anxious to know what happened next. I laughed, I cried, it moved me Katy… and it touched my heart ! Such an awesome little book , fits in your purse and packs such a punch ! So, what do an Agent with a deaf son and a school principle have in common when it comes to murder ? Well you will just have to grab this book and see for your self !

I received this book for my honest opinion from Katy Lee and I am not even a suspense reader and it caught my attention and held it from the first chapter. Awesome Katy Lee… do we get to know what happens in ever after ? Surely you can’t just end it there….smile

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book, and I devoured it in just a couple of sittings. Katy Lee has delivered another beautifully written, tightly plotted gem that satisfies the reader on so many levels. The deaf heroine, Miriam, is a joy: funny, sensitive, caring, and grounded in her faith. Lee has done her research and information about the deaf community (e.g., name signs) is woven seamlessly throughout the novel. But it is tortured hero Owen--I admit it. I'm a sucker for a tortured hero!--who steals this show. His grief and guilt over the death of his wife and the injury that changed his son's life forever are gut-wrenching. His journey to love and unconditional acceptance, and back to his faith, superimposed on a framework of a nicely done suspense plot, was deeply moving and truly inspirational. And the scenes with his son will steal your heart. I can't wait to return to Stepping Stones Island. Katy Lee is an author to watch.

Owen Matthews goes undercover in the small Maine coastal town of Stepping Stones. Someone's been importing and selling marijuana in town, and his friend and Sheriff Wesley Grant asks him to investigate, starting with the new principal in town.

Returning to the island after her grandmother passes away, leaving Miriam her house, Miriam accepts the job of principal at the local high school. While some see her deafness as a disability, Miriam instead focuses on her job and trying to fit in as the newest resident of the small island.

As more and more evidence points to Miriam, Owen acts as a substitute English teacher in order to keep an eye on Miriam and her interpreter, Nick.

I enjoyed this inspirational romantic suspense. The characters were well written, and I kept wanting to read ahead to find out the conclusion.

This is the seccond book I have read by Katy Lee. I enjoyed "Real Virtue" so much, I couldn't wait for her next release. I am very pleased with this book. It transports you to an island in New England, and to small town life. Her main character is a deaf women, which is very unique. I enjoy this writers extraordinary style of writing, and in this book she gives voice to an often overlooked part of society. She helps us understand deaf culture, and the struggles the deaf endure.

I know this writer is a romance author, but I enjoy her stories more for the suspense. She keeps you guessing. If you are looking for a formulaic romance, you will not find one here. This book is sweetly romantic, exciting and suspenseful, and has a higher purpose. I reccomend this great read.

Lee’s main character, Miriam, is first and foremost a formidable heroine. A deaf Principal in a hearing school, Miriam has her work cut out for her. But when it seems that the town has it in for her, she doubts the wisdom of returning to the little town of Stepping Stones where she visited her grandmother as a child. The town is hiding a secret and Miriam may be the key to unlocking it. Enter Owen, a handsome DEA agent sent to infiltrate a drug smuggling operation on the island, and Miriam is forced not only to prove her innocence, but to protect her heart as well. This fast paced romantic suspense had heartwarming moments, action-packed adventure, and a mystery that kept me guessing right through to the end. Great job, Ms. Lee!

Owen Matthews caused the death of his wife and his young son to lose his hearing. He's been hiding out doing border patrol work while letting grandparents raise his son. But now he's been called in undercover on a drug case.

Miriam Hunter is the principal at the local high school. She seems to have a lot of people who believe she's the culprit for the drug trade going on since it began when she came to town and all fingers point to her. She is deaf and therefore people haven't gotten to know her because they don't know her 'language.'

Owen quickly comes to the conclusion that Miriam is innocent and being set up, but it takes quite a bit for them to finally put all the pieces together.

A very enjoyable story that kept me guessing till the end!

I may be a little partial because I wrote a hearing impaired novel myself. This is a who done it with a twist, my kind of book. I was totally veering towards someone else, so it was a nice surprise. A new principal, Miriam Hunter is in town and right after she shows up, drugs are circulating their small town of Stepping Stones. Agent Owen Matthews is called in to go undercover as a teacher to rule the beautiful principal out. He has issues he needs to work out regarding her impairment and issues from his past.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book. I admit that when I read the blurp on the back, I was sceptical as to how the author was going to pull off an entire novel with a heroine who just happened to be deaf, but Katy Lee did a masterful job with this book. I was captured from the moment the hero and heroine meet on the rocks in the surf to the last pages of this book. The excellent writing and tight plot bring us along on a tide of emotion. I highly recommend this book.

I was intrigued by the main character having a disability. I felt the author did a great job making Miriam real to us. I also felt the author made Owen human and not the 'perfect' hero. I will definitely read more books by Katy. You can find my full review where I also rate books on the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use at More Than a Review dot com.

Warning Signs was an excellent page turner. Katy Lee has developed her characters well, and I enjoyed hanging out with Miriam and Owen on their journey. Miriam was such a strong person and taught me so much about people with hearing impairments. Owen was a tortured hero, and he just grabbed my heart. Great book! I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I received this as an ARC, so I went into this story blind having not read the synopsis. I love romance books, but don't usually have a thing for suspense, but this did an excellent job blending the two genres. I really enjoyed the characters and I loved that the main characters weren't "perfect" model types.

I liked this book very much. There was plenty of suspense and I was kept guessing about who did it. The romance was sweet and I liked how the man and woman finally discovered their love. I also liked the message about finding God, or finding God again in spite of adversity. I would recommend this novel to readers who like Christian romance and mysteries.

Beautiful story

This was a beautiful story of two people who thought they had failed at life and needed acceptance and forgiveness. It was nice having a heroine who was deaf because there is rarely anyone in these suspense books with a disability. Lots of excitement and danger. This has been a very good series so far.

Very enjoyable. Loved the inclusion of deaf culture, but didn't totally understand why the sheriff was with the bad guy when he kidnapped the girl, then gone, then back again.
But whatever ;-)
Great story
