He came for the burger but stayed for the bartender.
Finn O'Brien had two making a killer cocktail and spectacularly bad decisions. So naturally, he quit his soul-crushing job to co-own a gay sports bar in Tampa with his best friend. What could go wrong?
Well, forgetting to actually promote their grand opening, for one.
On the bright side, while Finn stood behind a bar with no customers and a growing pile of bills, a rumpled blonde in a crooked tie shuffled in and parked himself in a corner booth.
Chase didn't talk much.
Finn talked too much.
Chase was buttoned-up, guarded, and allergic to fun.
Finn was a mess of freckles and bad jokes who didn't know when to quit.
They had absolutely nothing in common—except the way Chase kept showing up, night after night, claiming he was just there for the burger.
Between a meddling best friend, a kitchen staff placing bets on when Finn would finally make a move, and the world's slowest-burning attraction, Finn had a bar to save, a found family to build, and a grumpy lawyer to crack—one colorfully named drink at a time.
Popped! is the first book in the Barbacks series—a slow-burn rom-com for anyone who's ever stress-organized a spreadsheet, crushed on someone completely unavailable, or wondered if it's weird to learn a regular's order by heart.
(It was weird. Finn knew it was weird.)
If you like the swoony slow burns of Riley Hart, the sharp banter of Eden Finley, or the found-family warmth of a TJ Klune novel—but with a lot more whiskey, you'll love this series.
Casey Morales is an LGBT storyteller and the author of multiple bestselling MM romance novels. Born in the Southern United States, Casey is an avid tennis player, aspiring chef, dog lover, and ravenous consumer of gummy bears.
This is a 447-page Medium Paced, Found Family, Origin Story, Instant Connection, Rom-Com MM Romance. This is the first book in the Barbacks Series, set in a neighborhood in Tampa, Florida and takes place in the restaurant industry. This isn’t going to be one of my normal reviews. This one struck differently, because it takes place in the restaurant industry which was where I was born, bred and raised. Even with some very minor things being a tad bit unrealistic, it was essential to the story that some industry rules were broken. If I had written down everything I had ever experienced while working in the industry myself, I could have written a bestselling book. Casey Morales did a great job bringing this to life, from everyday shift life to organizing events and marketing.
Written in dual first person POV, this is not your normal formatted spicy romance. Yes, there is a romance between our two MCs, and Yes, there is spice. BUT, this first book in the Barbacks Series focuses more on the Bar itself and how it brought together everyone in a tightknit found family. It was an easy read, taking place over a period of time that was sped up for the sake of the story.
The ensemble is big, with some sidekick characters having bigger parts than others, but they all have big presence and personalities. Which is where the Com in Rom-Com comes into play. Each character has all different characteristics, but one thing they all have in common is that they are hilarious. It was like rambunctious siblings chirping each other all the time, but without driving Dad and Daddy to crazy… almost LOL!
The Rom in the Rom-Com is an instant connection in the flurry of mass chaos of legal paperwork. Our OCD Irishman, Finn, is a hopeful business owner with the dream of opening his own place in the hopes of giving his community somewhere to go, while battling his own Worst-Case Scenario Thoughts. Chase, an overworked lawyer (Shocking Right!), got into family law to help overs and prevent what he went through himself. (Okay, a lawyer with a heart, THAT’S SHOCKING). These two collide in a meet-cute that is adorable and it doesn’t end there. Their awkwardness toward each other is so cute. As the progress of the bar progresses and the found family grows steadily, so does their relationship, thanks to the found family. Because dating when opening a brand-new restaurant and dating a lawyer, it was a miracle that they even saw each other.
The plot was mostly the origin story of the bar, which I am not complaining about in the least. I think it was an awesome move on the author’s part, putting the bar and the found family relationships in the front of the story instead of in the back. Yes, Finn & Chase’s relationship is important and has an impact, but the world Casey Morales is building needed space to grow, one beer, one cocktail and one character at a time. It is a format that shouldn’t have worked in the romance genre, but it did! The romance between everybody: friends, coworkers, boss & employee, roommates, and even patrons and employees; it was all so important to set the foundation to this series that will have a good life ahead.
'Popped: A funny contemporary mm romance' (Barbacks Book 1) written by Casey Morales
April 2026
What a fun and funny storyline; loved it! I'm not gonna do a play-by-play of everything here, as there's already a lot of those around already..just sayin'.
This was well-written and featured ice hockey (yeah, you had me at hockey!) and both silly and profound interactions between old friends, new friends, co-workers who became friends, and strangers who became friends...and something more!
Fun watching all their interactions go down! Infatuated sports players...glitter bombs...singing bartender...gotta love it!
Can't hardly wait for the next book in this series!
I have a great big goofy smile plastered across my face! PS: great cover that's just perfect for the character of the Irish bartender, Finn!
Popped! by Casey Morales is the first book in his Barbacks series. It is the story of two men who are so busy with their jobs that they can’t think about or do anything else and how their accidental meeting changes everything as they realize there is more to life than work and fall in love. Finn O’Brien was originally from Dublin and moved to the Tampa area when he was in his teens. He liked life there and had been a bar tender for 7 years but worked in a place that didn’t appreciate his abilities. He lives with Priya who is a very snarky doctor and knows exactly what Finn is thinking and isn’t afraid to give him her opinion. His best friend Mark had some money when he sold his business, decided he was going to start an LBGTQ+ friendly bar in Ybor, and wants Finn to run it. Now Finn is a major spiraler and all he can do is think of all the ways this idea could go wrong, but Mark calmed him down and together they started making lists of what they would need to make it happen, especially since Mark has already leased the building. They come up with a concept for being a sports bar as well LBGTQ+ friendly and name the bar Barbacks. He hires an amazing cook in Rod and a sweet and somewhat clueless barback Jacks. Finn is looking it over when a body slams into him and papers go everywhere. When the two men make eye contact you can almost hear Cupid’s arrow hitting them. The other man apologizes and quickly runs away, but neither man can get each other off their minds. When opening night comes, they are prepared but also anxious because they hadn’t done much of a promotional campaign and sure enough only a few people show up which makes Finn spiral again. But one of those people is the guy who ran into him. Finn waits on him and they learn each other’s names but not much more because Chase is tired and has to leave. Chase Sullivan works way too hard for a family law firm. He was hired right out of college and is out to prove himself but taking on whatever they put in front of him. He is constantly juggling cases and reviews and often works 18 or more hours a day and on the weekends. He saw a notice that said Barbacks was having its opening night and it was only 4 blocks from the office so he went. Both Finn and Chase were shocked and recognized each other. Mark, Jacks, and Priya were egging Finn on to get Chase’s number so they can see what will happen but both men are awkward with flirting and Chase leaves but also leaves a sweet note. Meanwhile Mark and Finn come up with more ideas for getting people to come to the bar which includes sports themed watch parties and they decide to continue after the games by showing a popular TV show (kind of like Heated Rivalry). They also put out flyers about the bar and before long it is standing room only and everyone loves going there. Chase starts showing up more and they finally exchange numbers and take a walk one night which leads to a kiss. Then Chase asks him out on a date which means hiring another bartender which ends up being Benji who is extremely good at his job but also very flamboyant and fits right in with everyone else. A kiss over the bar goes viral when someone posts it on Instagram which leads to more dates and some very hot love scenes and also makes the bar even more popular. Things are going well but Chase thinks they are living in a bubble because they work so much and stay to themselves all the time and he is worried that things might not work out. But both of them realize they are falling for each other and when Mark, Benji, and Jacks approach Finn and tell him they need to spend time with Chase he decides to do that and they meet at Chase’s for lunch where everyone descends on him like a pack of wolves, especially as they question his intentions with Finn. But everyone likes Chase, so it works out well and after they leave Chase tells Finn he loves him and Finn is shocked but happy because he tells him he loves him too. Meanwhile the bar is going crazy and Chase has cut back on work and is helping out while Finn is also able to take more time off to be together. There is a great ending and you know that they are going to be together forever. I really enjoyed this book. Both Finn and Chase are way too busy but once they find each other and realize what they have, they decide what they need to do to make their relationship work. They are also somewhat clueless when it comes to flirting and trying to get to know one another. Finn is a nice guy and very dedicated to the bar and making it a success but he recognizes something in Chase that he wants right away. Chase is overworked and doesn’t know what to do about it except keep working but also knows he has to change once he meets Finn. Priya, Mark, Jacks, Benji, and Diego, Chase’s best friend, all add to the story and I found myself laughing out loud many times during the book because of their hi-jinks. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like stories about men who work too hard and out of the blue find each other and realize they could be great together if they can find the time to get to know one another, and who also who have some crazy friends who do all in their power to see that they can find the love they know they have for each other.
Finn O’Brien was drowning at his job as a bar tender in a corporate chain restaurant. Seven years at the same soul sucking place with a manager who was younger than him and had zero experience. Lets here it for Nepotism. So when his best friend Mark called for a lunch meet to launch his latest great idea, Finn wasn’t too enthusiastic. Mark had lots of great ideas with no follow through. Mark, jumping the gun as usual, had already signed a lease on a big space in Ybor City where he wants to open a gay sports bar. Finn wasn’t convinced until he saw the space and gave in to trying it out. Standing outside looking in that morning he was bowled over by a guy in a suit and tie with papers flying all over. Finn helped him corral all the papers and looked into the lawyer type’s eyes it was a frozen breath, lungs stopped working moment, for both of them .Sparks flew from fingertips. When the lawyer ran off her didn’t even get his name. Finn hired a Latin chef who had burned out on Michelin Star restaurants in Miami and moved back to Tampa to help out at his family’s restaurant. He turned out to be perfect. And Mark hired a young barback that moved around like a jack rabbit taking orders, washing glasses, running errands. Two weeks after they started, they had their Grand Opening on Friday night with not enough marketing, and it was pretty dull, maybe 35 people. Saturday was less than 50. So, they decided they needed to ramp it up to bring in the Sunday crowd. But the best thing that happened late was the Lawyer shuffled in the door, crashed into a booth, spread his papers out across the table and practically went to sleep. Finn walked over and took his order and insisted he get food. They also ran off 1000 flyers for a watch party for the Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Team’s game on Sunday afternoon followed by a watch party for the Netflix Gay Hockey Rom Com. And they plastered those flyers all over Ybor City. They didn’t open until 2 on Sunday but guys were showing up as early as 10 to get a good seat and Mark had to go buy eggs so Rod could make brunch. Before the game was into the second period, there was standing room only and there was a line of about 30 people outside waiting to get in. And it didn’t slow down after the game and before the Netflix showing. Finn had found out Saturday his name was Chase but when Chase came back on Sunday they were so slammed Finn didn’t get more than a wave and a smile. Chase left and they still had not exchanged phone numbers. After a week like they Markk and Jacks convinced Finn they needed to hire another bartender so that he could have a night off. But the pink-haired Korean chaos tornado was perfect. So by mid evening, Chase and Finn got to leave, got their first kiss, and a few other important things. I’m usually not one for Rom-Com, but this was laugh out loud funny, which I never do. And sweet and was a really good story. I can see more of this coming because everyone will get so invested, Kind of like a gay “Cheers” with a lot more humor.
What a brilliant start to Casey Morales new Series ‘Barbacks’. I’ve been looking forward to it for ages.
‘Popped’ is Finn O’Brien’s tale of success from working in a bar where he wasn’t appreciated or respected for all the hours he worked extra without pay, to becoming a business partner with his best friend (and an ex) Mark. Mark offered him 25% share in return for Finn furnishing and setting up a new pub, hiring staff and managing the pub on a daily basis. On the day he goes to view it for the first time, he literally bumps into a guy outside who is rushing by and drops all his belongings to the ground. Papers scatter and electric sparks fly and after Finn helps him grab his stuff the guy dashes off.
‘Barbacks’ is a niche bar, for Sport loving Gay community and when it opens it doesn’t take long to become a huge success. The staff Finn hires, Rod, Jackson, Benji and Mark all become like a second family, often joking with him about his Irish accent. At 29 y.o.he hasn’t had time for relationships, mostly hookups. Finn is shocked when the guy he collided with visits Barbacks and keeps coming back. Watching Finn drooling over this guy his prod him to go over and at least share their names if not their phone numbers.
So Chase is a Lawyer who works a few blocks from ‘Barbacks’ and he specialises in Family Law, because it is something close to his heart. He works too hard and too long hours. But he does make changes for Finn when they finally start dating. Chase appears to have only one friend Diego who is like an older brother to him. He had a side to him that was a surprise to me and a bigger one to Finn. 😂❤️🔥
One of best scenes is where Finn’s friends, Priya, Benji, Jacks and Mark insist on meeting Chase to ensure he will be good to Finn. They do give him a good grilling at a BBQ at Chase’s home and it is so sweet 💜💜. Even better when the friends go home and leave them alone.
I was so happy to receive an ARC via the author and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I liked the way Casey has introduced a few members of the ‘Lightenings’ the team they host ‘watch parties’ of their games on TV, and I was happy to note that Jacks, the huge, sweet, innocent, ex quarterback, has someone who pays a lot of attention to him every time they drop by. ‘Tapped’ book 2 will fill us in on that duo.
‘Popped’ is a fun, easy read and the setting in ‘Barbacks’ is perfect for more fun and keeping up with this gorgeous bunch of guys who keep it such an inviting and safe place for the Sport Loving Gay community in Ybor, Tampa.
I loved it! I love Casey Morales, I’ve read most of his books, and I just loved this one as well! I enjoyed how Finn and Mark start the bar in such a realistic way. I love how Finn’s friends support him, and let him know when things should change, and when risks should be taken, and when sticking to your runs is the right thing to do, but more as a backup than meddling and controlling people, so I loved that! And Chase is such a sweetheart! I just wanted to wrap him in bubble wrap and keep him safe until Finn could sweep him off his feet. I have no idea why I liked him so much from the first line I read, but I almost ended up with an ulcer worrying about his position at work, I liked him that much. But that’s on par with Casey’s books. I still remember some of the ones I read years ago, and even though the names are forgotten, the characters and the feelings their stories evoked still linger in my mind and heart. This is not a life changing book, but the characters are so real, it’s like you’re living all of this with them, and it stays with you. And the fact that Finn and Chase both have to risk something to be together, that they have to be open and vulnerable to make sure they can make things work, but they aren’t alone… I love it. This isn’t a book about Finn and Chas falling in love, this is like a chunk of someone’s life was written down, with details, in scenarios that you are used to seeing such as hanging out with friends or having a crappy day at work, with worries, concerns, and hopes for a brighter future. It’s like living life in the midst of a bunch of friends, and you get to see everything, but then the curtain closes, the book ends, and you feel like they left an imprint in your heart. The best part? Is that you already know some of these friends, you’re just seeing another aspect of their lives, and it’s so comforting to find them again after being apart for so long. And they’re still the same amazing, incredible, supportive team of friends. And if you haven’t read any of Casey’s books before, I recommend you do, because he has a knack for writing true to life stories, with stressors and heartaches, and funny moments, and heartwarming acts, and everything in between. I loved it, and I love how he brings back loved characters again, in an non-intrusive way, more of a “do you remember me?” that works for old and new readers alike.
An overworked attorney encounters an enterprising bar owner and falls in love.
Casey Morales has crafted an impressive universe centered around a flustered barback, who has been working for corporation-owned bars with disdain and, to a great extent, lacking fulfillment in his life. When Finnigan O'Brien's slightly older best friend sells his business and offers Finn an opportunity to operate a bar with a 25% stake and a salary, he leaves his soulless corporate bar job to pursue his dream of owning a gay sports bar.
Although they neglected to promote their own opening, the oversight yielded a marketing advantage that enabled them to be prepared by the time they focused on the gay sports bar theme, which included watching the local hockey team and hosting special events.
Chase Sullivan is working at his inaugural full-time position as an attorney with a husband-and-wife team specializing in family law. He nearly falls asleep due to the long hours he works on weekends and evenings to keep pace with his new role. Nevertheless, he finds fulfillment in assisting others with family law matters. His hurried attempt to reach his office late one day results in a collision with Finn, whom he finds adorable. They meet and eventually converse.
This constitutes the inaugural volume of the 'Barbacks' series, which documents the preparations for the bar's opening through humorous stories and hopeful anticipation. The bar becomes bustling once their flyers and social media outreach are launched. Sitting in a corner booth is Chase, whom Finn invited to observe the bar's operation.
Casey Morales presents a bar that caters to both non-drinkers and drinkers alike. The eccentric bartender, who works gratis during his interview to demonstrate his ability to attract patrons, succeeds with his social media following and his adventurous array of drinks. The series also features other lively characters who will appear in subsequent installments.
Though the book is lengthy, it is replete with detailed storytelling and a heartwarming romance between two men who are prompted to consider their mutual affection. The story concludes with an emotionally moving and gratifying ending.
I’m an avid reader of mm fiction (a couple hundred books a year), yet Casey Morales in Popped managed to write a character that I found myself smiling, nodding, and laughing with, a rare event in such a tide of books. The character is Finn, an Irish transplant, who is very extroverted and is well suited to a full time customer service job as a bartender. Casey includes enough detail that it feels as though Finn could be working at my local bar. The other main character, Chase, is a lawyer with a heart of gold, so someone who only exists in fantasies and I did not have to connect with, although someone Finn deserves as a boyfriend. We are not told the details of Finn’s dating disasters, but enough allusions from Mark, Finn’s BFF and co-owner of the bar, make it clear that Finn can’t be trusted to go out with someone unvetted by his friends. We learn a lot about Chase, including his motivation for becoming a lawyer, a suitably noble reason. Everyone knows these two are perfect for each other, except Finn and Chase.
The setting in the bar Barbacks allows for the introduction of several important secondary characters, most of whom will have their own books, but before then, they are nicely fleshed out in Popped. Most of the chapters that follow Finn are set in the bar, so it acts as another character. It was fun to watch Finn being so caught up in bartending and seeing his customers have a good experience that he almost does not focus on the profitability of the bar. That is clearly the job of Mark, who has a financial cushion not to sweat the bar’s financials, but is thrilled when it is profitable almost right away.
I never knew I enjoyed a really slow attraction and an even longer wait for someone to make a move. I usually get annoyed with one of the main characters and deem them TSTL (too stupid to live). That never happened in Popped, even over five hundred pages. I was happy to learn that Popped is the first of five books, so they are all autoreads for me. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am often asked by other readers if I can suggest a MM romance book that doesn't include much angst. This first edition of Casey's new series "Barbacks" is exactly that, so sit back and enjoy a great MM rom-com starring Finn & Chase. Finn is a ginger Irish boy stuck in a dead-end bartending job in Tampa. Chase is working his way up as an associate lawyer in a small family practice law firm. They literally bang into each other on the sidewalk, and the rest is history!
Finn's bestie Mark convinces Finn to leave his current boring gig and go into partnership with him opening a new gay bar in Tampa with a sports theme. Mark has already selected the building and location, so he pulls Finn over to check it out. While standing on the sidewalk assessing, around the corner comes lawyer Chase who's late for work and in a big enough hurry that he bangs right into Finn sending paperwork flying. There is a mutual atraction from the get-go, but there's no time to pursue it. We then spend multiple chapters getting background info on both of these MC's and also the details on the bar setup. Then it's time for the Grand Opening. To Finn's surprise, the hunky lawyer stops by. There's some awkward stops-and-starts, but the sparks fly and off we go on their romantic adventure.
The supporting cast of both Finn's and Chase's friends and family provide us with plenty of laughs along the way. And also some real potential for the next editions to the series. Ultimately we get Finn & Chases's HEA in the Epilogue so now I can't wait for Jacks (the barback) & Skyler (the Tampa Bay Lightning captain)'s story coming up next! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I met a boy tonight. He gave me his number. We’re going to see each other again. God, he’s cute and Irish and . . . I’ll stop now.”
Popped! by Casey Morales is the first book in his new series Barbacks. I’ve literally just closed it and I have to say, it’s hands-down one of the best times I’ve had reading in a while. I caught myself grinning like an idiot or actually laughing out loud at these characters and their chaotic energy more times than I can count. Casey just has this way of writing that’s totally addictive. Once I start, I’m glued to the pages.
When I saw the ARC for Popped!, I grabbed it immediately because I knew it’d be good, but I honestly didn’t expect to like it this much. I’m not even a “bar person” in real life, so the fact that a story centred around one hooked me this hard is saying a lot!
The whole cast is top-tier. Obviously, Finn and Chase are adorable together, but the entire Barbacks crew is what makes it special. Every single staff member has their own vibe and those specific quirks that make them feel like real people. That “happy chaos” energy they have is just infectious.
Also, the theme nights were a plus. Loved that. And as a fan, having the hockey element woven in was the ultimate cherry on top for me. I’m already dying to get my hands on the next book. Jacks and Skyler, I’m ready for you!
Highly recommended!
Thank you, Casey Morales for this free eARC. This is my honest review and recommendation.
This is a 5 star book for the first 2/3rds and a 3 star for the last 1/3 - for me. This is a romance between Finn, bartender/owner and Chase, lawyer. They meet when Chase runs into Finn outside the bar Finn is about to open.
I absolutely loved the first 2/3rds of this book - where Finn and Mark (best friend) work on setting up the bar and figuring out how to get the customers to come. During this time Finn and Chase start a slow burn romance - both are too busy to really 'get down' to it at first.
The last third of the book (& this is something that is in most (all?) of Casey's books) is the section where the over-involved friends take over the plot. They're found family, which is nice, but they're also wayyyy too involved and wayyyy to judgmental. They make wayyy too many threats ('if you hurt him') and give wayyy too much advise for folks who are ALL single. I understand that this is the part that many readers consider 'funny' - I just don't see it that way and find it annoying.
The ending is very nice, too - where there's a proposal and an HEA. Chase and Finn fit together well, and it's a low drama/no breakup romance with plenty of spice once they finally get together.
If you usually like Casey's books, then MY problem with them is not going to be YOUR problem. Truly did love the part about the bar, and I would have given it 5 stars if not for them over-involved, loudmouthed friends.
Independent reviewer for BookSirens, I was gifted my copy of this book.
How?!?!?! How the chuffing eck have I not come across Casey Morales before?!?!? There's a chuffing back list!!
Ok, so, deep breath, I can do this!
I bloody LOVED this book!
There! I wrote a review, that's ok, right? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I need to say more. Hold on, another deep breath!
I loved this book, I really did. It's billed as a funny read, and it really is.
It's also an easy read, with lots of characters, who flutter around Finn and Chase and make themselves very much a nuisance, but in the best way!
It's fun, and light hearted. It's steamy and smexy, and Chase pulls a blinder I did not see coming in that department. It's emotional and loving. What it does not have though, is a third act breakup and any angst, at all, really! There is some miscommunication, is all. And I loved that, I really did.
Both Finn and Chase have a say, so we get it all, and it really was awesome, watching these two dance around each other, til they finally took the plunge.
And, as I said, I bloody LOVED IT!
Now, how do I get my hands on the next book, and when is it out?? I don't care how long I have to wait, I am fully invested in this group of people and I need more, like yesterday!
So, in case you didn't get my point. . . . .
5 full and shiny stars (but I feel there may be glitter-sprayed stars in future books!)
All I can say is wow, what a fantastic story that showcases the beginning of a gay sports bar called Barbacks started by two best friends- Mark Delgado and Finn O’Brien which becomes the best bar in Tampa!
After an opening night flop- due to failed advertising which is soon remedied with brilliant ideas and marketing strategies featuring big screen tv’s to watch Ice hockey games and Horney Rival Ice Hockey players who fall in love and chaotic energised bartenders, a big burley barback, food menus made in heaven and a charming chaotic loud and fantastic cocktail bartender who features on TikTok and instagram!
“The straightest gay men in Tampa are opening a bar together.”
Welcome to Barbacks a bar that becomes a second home and family to it’s staff and patrons penned and created by the amazingly talented author- Casey Morales!
A bar where the co-owner Finnigan O’Brien falls for one of his patrons- overworked Family Lawyer Chase Sullivan who only came for the food at first… and this is where their funny, sweet, steamy low angst journey begins- in utter chaos, filled with humour, surrounded by warm friends, strangers and found family!
I love how each staff member will get their own story and barback Jacks is next…
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Finn is an overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated bartender until his best friend Mark talks him into going into business together. Their brilliant idea? A gay sports bar, with TVs playing all the local teams, especially hockey, and watch nights for the gay hockey romance series (yes, riffing on that show). Not a dance club, but a place to hang out with friends, or your love, and not be bombarded with loud music and half-naked strangers. Along the way, Finn has a “meet cute” with Chase when they literally crash into one another on the sidewalk. They get to know one another later, when Chase finds the bar and becomes a regular, though both think they’re too busy for love.
You know what? I rarely give 5 star ratings. This one earned it. Finn, Chase, and all the other characters are well-drawn and fleshed out. I cringed at Benji’s crazy bartending antics. I loved (and feared) Finn’s roommate, Priya. And I just wanted to tell Jacks he was okay. I thrilled when… ah, go read the book! The love story was sweet – but the setting and ensemble of other characters really WORKED. And dammit, Morales, you made me cry happy tears. Can’t wait for the next in the Barbacks series.
Popped! was absolutely hilarious from start to finish. I made the mistake of reading it in the waiting room at the dentist office while my kids were in their appointments, and I SNORTED laughing. Loudly. Not a subtle little chuckle either — the kind that makes the receptionist come over to check on you because clearly something unhinged is happening. She asked what I was reading and immediately added it to her TBR after I warned her this book should probably come with a “do not read in public” label. The characters completely made this book for me. They were chaotic, lovable, funny, and somehow felt like real people by the end. The chemistry was so good, the banter was perfection, and every interaction felt effortless and entertaining. I didn’t want to leave their world when the book ended. Also, I don’t even drink, but this book had me ready to pull up a chair at the bar just to destroy those burgers because somehow they sounded life-changing. This was the perfect mix of funny, heartfelt, messy, and adorable. If you love m/m romance with amazing characters, incredible humor, and the kind of story that makes you laugh hard enough to concern innocent bystanders, absolutely read this book. Just maybe not in a waiting room.
Popped (Barbacks Book 1) by Casey Morales was seriously perfect. I think what I loved most about this story is that there was no angst. It was just very real life. They found their person, they made each other, better and happy and it was beautiful.
Chase the mild workaholic lawyer on the edge of burn out but makes decisions to have a life outside of work. He recognized that his drive could turn into a problem and took steps to correct it. Green flag!!
Finn the miserable corporate bartender who needed a change. He needed to take a risk and so with a little help from his friends he takes a leap and creates a community that is thriving and beautiful.
I think this series is going to be fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing the happily ever afters for the cast of characters that Casey has created. This story is filled a hot lawyer, a red head lawyer, a found family, a literal collision when they meet, spicey hot scenes, men who fall in love with each other despite the fear and doubts they have. You will want to read this book!
I received this advanced readers copy for free and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
The inimitable Casey Morales continues to create fascinating and authentic realms for his MM romances. His series now includes Nashville Spicy, Heartstrings of Honor, Of Crowns & Quills, Of Shadows & Secrets, Land of Jade & Fire, and now he delivers BARBACKS – a welcome step away from his historic war novels and visits into Asian realms, and focuses on fun, happiness, and light hearted romance!
Setting the tone of this delightful book, we meet Finn: ‘The woman in the flamingo hat wanted a mojito. She arrived ten minutes ago in a white Mercedes SUV that cost more than I’d make in two years, parked in the handicapped spot despite her windshield’s obvious lack of placard, and marched into Riley’s Tap & Table like she owned the place…’ So we meet the barback Finn, and ultimately Chase, and a swell romance ignites or a Casey puts it, ‘a slow-burn rom-com for anyone who's ever stress-organized a spreadsheet, crushed on someone completely unavailable, or wondered if it's weird to learn a regular's order by heart.’ A thoroughly enjoyable new novel that enhances Casey Morales’ stature!
3.5 stars - Buoyant story with sparkling wit and banter.
This was a charming, light-hearted romcom, with plenty of laugh out loud moments as it tracks the love story of of Finn and Chase. Enjoyed the fast-paced story which also covers their bunch of friends, who become a found family of sorts, centred around the LGBTQ friendly bar. I also liked the fact that the story focused on various intricacies involved in preparations for the bar's opening, it made the whole story feel more grounded and real.
That said, the latter half of the book became a bit too 'crowded' in the sense of taking away the focus of the romance between Finn and Chase, and instead shifting a lot of the spotlight into interventions/participation/advice by their friends. Yes, it was well meaning and positive, and their friends do have their best interests at heart - however it did seem at times that they were inserting themselves a bit too much in the dynamic between the leads.
But overall, this was a lighthearted read and definitely set an intriguing start for this Barbacks series.

A new series by Casey Morales? Of course I’m all in! The promise of a funny, lighthearted series without any drama is fully delivered. The characters are funny and endearing. And Finn and Chase are adorable. We love watching them get closer, even if it’s a little awkward. It’s nice to see that they’re honest with each other right away—no drama, just two men getting to know each other and falling in love. I already love this series. And I love the world of the bar that Finn and Mark are building. I can’t wait to read the next book!

I got an ARC of Popped, the start of a new M/M series from the author, and dived in head first to a fun world in a fast-moving Tampa neighborhood with two friends who failed at dating each other, starting up a gay bar. They're earnest, scrappy, and mostly know what they're doing. We get a meet-cute between bartender Finn and Chase, a young lawyer struggling to keep up with his workload in a sidewalk collision of case files as Finn is scoping the bar's location. Fast forward a few weeks and Chase wanders into Finn's bar.
Readers are as invested in the success of Barbacks as they are with these two slightly awkward but eager guys as they fumble towards a relationship that takes its time to heat up. The bar shows off a gay hockey show, gains a local loyal crowd for its sports nights, and hires a crew of eager personalities to make the bar a success.
The guys are fun, the plot keeps you coming back for more, and I'm kind of hungry for a burger and tostones right now.
This was such an enjoyable read - no angst, instead two men finding each other by chance and then sweetly and steadily developing their relationship, supported and encouraged by friends. The story is full of those special moments in a new relationship - the butterflies, the moments of smirking & smiling at each other when you know what you're feeling is special and reciprocated - all these moments captured so beautifully in words. There's also plenty of humour throughout the book, and some amusing text exchanges and conversations. I loved the bar concept, and how they brought it to life. Highly recommend this book for a feel-good love story, beautifully written, no angst and plenty of humour. Can't wait to read the next in this series.

This is a sweet love story between a Bartender/Bar owner and a Family Lawyer. It is a slow burn, low angst romance, the 2 MCs don’t even kiss until Chapter 24. I liked that the more the 2 MCs were together the more confidence they both seemed to have in their lives. They were good for each other, and you root for them to have a HEA. There are quite a few side characters, and I like most of them, this is the first book of a series, so I assume several of the side characters are going to get their HEA in the coming books. This was an enjoyable book, and I will definitely read the next in the series. I also recommend this book for those that like sappy love stories. Story 4.5, Spice 3 I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Casey has done it again with a story that completely pulls you in from the start. It’s full of laughter, heart, and a cast of characters you can’t help but fall in love with—Finn, Chase, Mark, Benji, Jacks, Diego, and Priya each bring something special that makes you wish you could be part of their found family.
Finn and Chase are everything—you can’t help but root for them as a couple. And the bar Finn opens? Such a fun, vibrant piece of the story that adds even more depth and charm.
This book is packed with friendship, humor, and love, all wrapped up in a story that leaves you smiling. A great read with an even better ending.
I revised this ARC from Booksprout and voluntarily leaving my review.
Sweet and fizzy, like the best cocktails. This is a great start to what promises to be a light hearted and fun series. Finn has just started a gay sports bar with his best friend. With all the worries and work that go along with that. Chase is building his career as a family law attorney with long hours and a heavy case load. Neither man has had much time or inclination to try and build a relationship, but that all changes when they literally bump into one another on the street. The story and their relationship is a quiet build up to a sweet connection. I really enjoyed the banter between the MCs and the great side characters. The found family aspect of the story is also nicely done, can't wait to read more.
Finn decides to become a partner with his bf Mark in a bar. Mark has the money, Finn the experience bartending and practicality. Because of a run into meeting, Finn finds his perfect man, a lawyer named Chase. Finn and Chase are both workaholics that need better work/life balances. Both are driven, intelligent, gorgeous guys with underused flirting skills and snappy comebacks in their texts. Encouraged by well meaning friends, they make time for each other, squeeze in dates and realize they are the guys they spent their whole lives looking for. An enjoyable first "welcome to a new series" series about a bar you would definitely hang out in and want in your neighborhood. I received a copy of this through BookSprout and this is my voluntary opinion.
This is the first book in the new series Barbacks and it is off to a wonderful start. I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and easy to read. This is the story of Finn and Chase. Finn is a bartender and part owner of the new club Barbacks. It is aimed to appeal to the sports loving gay community. Chase is a lawyer specializing in family law. the two meet when they accidentally bump into each other outside of the bar. There are sparks between them right from the first meet. This is their story. The book is well written and easy to read. I enjoyed getting to know all the support characters from the bar. I really liked the found family that is developing. This is a really fun read. I look forward to the next book in this series.
What a fun start to a series that’s sure to be an instant favorite!
First of all, Finn is so adorable and grumpy and tightly wound. I just loved seeing him come undone and let loose as things developed with Chase.
Speaking of Chase, he starts off this sweet kind of dorky overworked guy. But once things stay escalating with Finn we get this whole new side of him and OMFG it is sooooo hot!!! I gasped, I squealed, I blushed, and I screamed. This man, y’all!!
The side characters are so well fleshed out it makes the world feel full and real. I love how the author sets up the next books so smoothly. He gives these characters depth and realness that has me gagging for their stories.
Check out Popped for a hilariously spicy good time!
So, while peering through the windows of the property he hopes to turn into a profitable bar, tall and red- haired Finn is collided into by a hurried, harried and deeply apologetic blond, and even taller lawyer Chase. Startling blue eyes meet kind hazel ones, and as they both struggle to recover strewn legal briefs and papers, a connection is formed, slow-burn till steamy, affectionate and amusing, till the circle of friends around them taunt and encourage them towards the happiness they both fear and deserve. Author Morales writes another winner, adorable and amusing as the characters fret and fuss towards the ending everyone else is betting on.

A delightful Rom-Com with a meet cute. "Popped" iis book one in Casey Morales Barbacks series. This starter is lots of fun, with a sweet/snarky humor and a great cast of friends and found family who ALL need books. Yesterday.
The author gives us a strong worldbuild, a great foundation for going forward, but doesn't short change on bartender Finn and lawyer Chase's story at all. Gay hockey romance TV with hockey related drink and food name rebuilds that had me smirking.
Fin and Chase both have poor work/life ratios and really need each other. OCD tendencies, but happily, little angst. It's a slow build, steamy relationship. They're both rather adorable.
I can't wait for more. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story is funny, swoony and romantic. And I loved it! This includes a "meet ugly" wherein one character literally runs into the other. It's slow burn but when the characters finally get together, the heat is on! (Looking at you chapter 25) The characters are well written, including the side characters, and believable.
The storyline is fun: two friends, one so done with his job and ready to quit, and the other who's ideas don't always work out, decide to open a gay sports bar. Hilarity ensues. The second MC is an overworked lawyer. I really loved Finn, the bar owner, and Chase, the lawyer.
