Charlotte Harper seems to have it all – a beautiful home in the Cheshire countryside, a loving husband, and a young son she adores. But when she collapses on a night out, doctors discover she has a rare blood disorder. Without a bone marrow transplant, she will die.
Then comes a revelation: Charlotte had a brother, John, given up for adoption at birth. Miraculously, John is a perfect donor – and he agrees to save her.
But when John moves into Charlotte’s home to recover from the painful procedure, her perfect world begins to shift. Strange visitors arrive at odd hours. Whispered phone calls. Veiled threats. Her peaceful home becomes a place of fear and stress.
As his terrifying agenda becomes clear, Charlotte realises that the price of John’s gift may be more than she can bear.
Because John didn’t just give Charlotte a life. He came to take one back.
The Family Secret – the chilling psychological thriller by the bestselling author of The Wrong Neighbour.
Caleb Crowe is a British writer of psychological thrillers, and is fascinated by stories where extraordinary things happen to ordinary people, and the mundane is transformed into the menacing.
He’s afraid of the sea, fearful in the countryside, panicky in large open spaces and terrified of small, confined spaces. There’s nowhere, and no one, that doesn’t possess some dark, brooding anxiety just waiting to have the lid prised open and turned into a twisty, suspenseful, nerve-shredding story.
He lives in Manchester with his partner, two children and two cats, who probably have their own mysterious agendas. Whether he's navigating the urban jungle or wrestling with the daily challenges of family life, Caleb draws inspiration from the unpredictability of everyday existence.
It was a fast paced and easy-to-follow read. Personally, I was extremely detached from the characters and could see the very obvious ending. The motive of the antagonist was revealed around 40-50% so I was expecting the story to progress, maybe add a twist too. But I was heading towards disappointment with my hopes! The book's good in the first half, in fact, the whole book can be considered fine but alas... it is a pretty cliche revenge story, nothing to gasp about. I would also like to add that the MC was always making some dumb decisions but somehow she was two steps ahead of the police.
|| 3.5☆ overall, wholehearted thanks to Netgalley and the author Caleb Crowe. ||
I was really excited going into this one after my first Caleb Crowe read, Trust No One, was a 5 star read for me last year — and The Family Secret absolutely delivered on the fast pacing I was hoping for.
This is one of those books that wastes no time getting moving. The story pulls you straight into Charlotte’s life and the huge family revelation that follows, and from there it just keeps escalating. I love thrillers that feel propulsive without losing the emotional stakes, and this balanced both really well.
One thing I really enjoyed was the chapter titles. They give these really ambiguous little teasers (for example, Asparagus) that don’t make full sense until you hit the chapter itself. Such a small detail, but it added another layer of curiosity while reading.
The premise itself is such a strong hook — family secrets, hidden pasts, and the uneasy feeling that not everyone in Charlotte’s life is who they claim to be. It’s very easy to fly through, and I finished this feeling really satisfied with the ride.
I would like to thank Inkubator books and Caleb Crowe for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
3⭐ - although the plot seems interesting, I just couldn't get into it.. Charlotte needs a bone marrow transplant or else she'll die, when she learns she has a secret brother who could potentially be a match - she finds him but he turns out to be a total creep.
Packed full of twists but overall the story felt very predictable.
Charlotte and Martin Harper have the kind of life that looks solid from the outside. She’s an architect, he’s a writer, they live in a home she designed, and they’re raising their seven-year-old son, Bobby. It’s the sort of setup that feels intentional, planned, and safe. Which is probably why the first cracks hit so hard. Charlotte’s exhaustion starts small, the kind you explain away with busy schedules and parenthood, until dizziness and fatigue force a doctor’s visit that reroutes everything. The diagnosis, aplastic anemia, lands like a dropped plate in a quiet kitchen. Rare. Deadly. Urgent.
The only viable treatment is a bone marrow transplant, preferably from a sibling. Charlotte, raised as an only child by a single father whose own health is failing, assumes the math doesn’t work in her favor. Then comes the deathbed confession. A brother. Given up for adoption when her parents were teenagers and decisions were made by other people with louder voices. Suddenly survival hinges on tracking down a stranger who shares her blood.
Once John is found and the transplant is completed, the story takes its sharp left turn. John develops complications, and Charlotte brings him into her home to recover. It’s a choice that feels compassionate, familial, and reasonable. It’s also the moment where unease quietly moves in, kicks off its shoes, and makes itself comfortable. What Charlotte believes she’s offering is care and connection. What she doesn’t yet understand is that she’s opened the door to something far more complicated.
Crowe absolutely sticks the landing with this one. The characters feel lived-in, like people you might know or at least recognize. Their emotions aren’t tidy. Anguish sits next to love, resentment tangles with obligation, and rage simmers just beneath otherwise calm conversations. I found myself reacting to scenes the way you do during tense family gatherings, that internal wince when you know a line has been crossed but no one’s going to say it out loud. Each character carries distinct traits and flaws, and those layers deepen as the story progresses, especially when morality starts getting blurry and the “right” choice becomes harder to define.
The Family Secret starts as a deliberate slow burn, taking its time to ground the reader in relationships and history, but once it accelerates, it doesn’t let up. The pacing tightens, the stakes sharpen, and suddenly you’re in full page-turner mode, telling yourself “one more chapter” and not meaning it. Crowe’s world-building is subtle but effective, immersing you in the day-to-day rhythms of the characters’ lives so completely that it feels less like observing and more like accompanying them. The descriptive details do real work here, enhancing the atmosphere without ever weighing it down.
If you've been looking for that next edge-of-your seat, WTF is gonna happen next, psychological thriller that will take up space in your head for a while then add The Family Secret to your TBR. Release date has not been set yet, but it is looking at a potential date in February so keep your eyes peeled for that pre-order option and grab it straight away. This is one you don't want to miss!
I would like to thank Caleb Crowe and NetGalley for the opportunity to Alpha/Beta/ARC for The Family Secret. As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review.
Loved this book! The twist at the end of part 3 got me. I didn't see it coming at all. Loved the characters. Will read anything this author writes! Absolutely brilliant. Thanks Netgalley for letting me read this book for an honest review
Caleb Crowe is an unknown author to me. After reading the blurb, I was captivated. This could be a very good thriller.
The thriller starts a bit slow. You're introduced to Charlotte and Martin Harper's family, there are some problems with the neighbors, and Charlotte's father is ill. Yet, there's a mysterious undercurrent in the story from the very beginning. You sense things are about to happen.
Charlotte becomes ill, and the only thing that can help her is a bone marrow transplant. She's an only child, so they'll have to find a match. Until her father, on his deathbed, reveals that she's not an only child after all. She has a brother. Here, the story takes a new turn. Charlotte searches for her brother and finds him. But she doesn't just find a blood relative who might be able to help her...
From here, the pace picks up. Strange things start to happen. In this part of the story, I clearly felt compassion for her brother John and a hope for a bright future. Until something happens again, and then everything turns out to be completely different.
The pace picks up a bit more as the story progresses. You really want to keep reading, to know how it will end.
I finished the book in a day. It grabbed me; I wanted to keep reading. However, I did miss a few more details and events. The story could have been more fleshed out. But that's just my personal taste.
Throughout the book, I was able to follow the story very visually. I could see a good movie in this; I think it's perfect for that.
I want to thank Caleb Crowe and Netgally for offering this ARC. I definitely enjoyed it!
I LOVE this author! From the very first book that I read of his, The Girl in the Painting, to this one, this author writes the best thrillers!
When I started reading this book, I had no idea what direction it was going to go, but the author took this book in the best direction. The book was full of suspense, and the suspense kept building with each turn of the page. The book takes off from the very beginning. The chapters are short, so they are easy to fly through. Before you know it, you’ve finished the book!
There were a few moments when I audibly gasped and my eyes went wide! The scene with Martin, and then with Bobby!! Then the ending!! Woo, I never expected that. I love how much Crowe is able to do this. He’s just so talented. Book after book, I can never guess what his mind is going to come up with.
So if you like fast paced thriller that wows you, then you need to read this book (and all of Crowe’s books)! This is out now, so get your hands on it!
THE FAMILY SECRET BY THE LEGEND THAT IS CALEB CROWE. 5 ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨s Release date set for the 22nd of February 2026. I absolutely love the cover for this book. Two of my friends also received the ARC for this book so we have buddy read it together and let me tell you it's bloody fantastic. Such a page turner. The storyline is great and it's suspenseful and them pages turn themselves because you just want to see where it's going to go. Love calebs writing style and he always gives me Whiplash with them twists. Absolutely mental this one and I'm so looking forward to the next one ☺
Holy cow! I’ll be talking about this one for awhile. Thank you to NetGalley and CalebCrowe for the advanced copy.
In full transparency I almost put this book down, to live life on the DNF shelf for eternity, there was a point where I went back to re-read the synopsis because how was this book prattling on about trees the same one where I was waiting for a long lost mysterious brother? I’m SO glad I pushed through that first part because once the book got going, I absolutely couldn’t put it down. This wasn’t what I was expecting at all in the best way. Equal parts twisty, exciting & dark. Characters aren’t super flushed out, we know little about them actually, but for a quick thriller type read this didn’t bother me.
The Family Secret is out 2/22 and you won’t want to miss this one!
Y’all, this is a gripping psychological thriller about Charlotte Harper, whose perfect life is turned upside down when she’s diagnosed with a rare blood disorder.
She discovers she has a brother, John, given up for adoption at birth — and he becomes her life-saving donor. But when he moves into her home, unsettling events begin to unfold.
As dark secrets surface, Charlotte realizes that John’s arrival may put her family in danger.
Thanks to Inkubator for providing this copy via #NetGalley for my honest, voluntary review. #TheFamilySecret #CalebCrowe #DomesticThriller #NewRelease
“The Family Secret” by Caleb Crowe is a suspenseful, intense read that kept me hooked. When Charlotte discovers a brother she never knew existed, she believes John might be her salvation. But his help comes at a price, and it quickly becomes clear he wants something in return. Dark, twisty, and unsettling, this story proves that all families have secrets, and some are deadly.
Unfortunately i need to admit that this is my least favorite Caleb Crowe's book from his last three published.
Although it was fast paced and started strong everything involving Bobby seemed too far-fetched and not a good add to the story (especially police work). I was annoyed at that so at the end i was not that invested in story as i was when i started to read it.
I think this is a good one to start if you haven't read anything by this author because other ones will mess with your head more and more. This is like an appetizer to what might come next.
The Family Secret leans more toward crime than psychological thriller, though it blends both genres well. The main character’s health battle becomes the catalyst for uncovering a long‑buried family secret; one her father has kept hidden for decades. When she urgently needs a bone marrow transplant, her dying father is finally forced to reveal the truth in the hope of saving her life.
At first, everything seems almost too perfect. Help arrives quickly, recovery feels smooth, and it all seems like a walk in the park. But then the unsettling moments begin: small at first, then piling up until everything spirals into chaos.
The writing style and the overall premise were handled beautifully. The twist was simple yet genuinely surprising. I devoured this book in a single day while wrapping up a week‑long beach holiday, and it was the perfect companion. The heartbreak, disappointment, and determination crafted through the story were delivered with a delicate touch that readers can really take in.
What I liked: • A dark, satisfying twist • Sensitive handling of the bone marrow transplant journey • A lovely “found family” dynamic among neighbours
What didn't work for me: • The reason behind the family estrangement was truly heartbreaking • The religious elements weren’t handled as realistically as they could have been • Some scenes may feel too dark for certain readers
In summary, this book surprised me on so many levels. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially with a cup of coffee by the beach. Huge thanks to NetGalley, Inkubator Books, and author Caleb Crowe for the advance copy. As always, my thoughts are my own.
5 🌟 Review. The Family Secret by Caleb Crowe. I received this ARC from NetGalley and leave this review voluntarily.
Charlotte and Martin Harper live in a beautiful home in the country with their young son Bobby. They both have excellent careers and life is good - until their ignorant neighbour starts planting massive trees that now block their views.
Charlotte then unexpectedly becomes ill after a night out with friend's and after many tests, she is told that only a bone marrow transplant will save her. How does she find a match when she's an only child? Her terminally I'll father reveals on his death bed that she, in fact, has a brother - John - who was adopted out. Charlotte searches everywhere for John and when she finds him, she manages to eventually convince him to donate his bone marrow.
John moves in with the Harper's to recover and soon weird things start happening; secret calls, late night visitor's, unmarked vans, and dodgy looking men. Charlotte and Martin become stressed and very afraid.
John's 'gift' he gave her appears to come with strings and a frightening agenda.....😱
Will the Harper's get their peaceful life back????
This is my third book of Caleb's, and he just keeps showing up with the sinister and jaw-dropping twists of doom. This thriller kept me up at night, I couldn't put it down. It's a spine-chilling tale of dark, ulterior motives and paralysing fear. WTF did I just read??? An epic story that will have your jaw on the floor.
Thanks Caleb, for another brilliant read of yours. Your narrative is descriptive, builds tension, and the pace is fast. I was completely shocked at a particular detail about John. My opinion of him started out as empathetic and then slowly changed to horrified!!!
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of The Family Secret by Caleb Crowe in exchange for an honest review. The Family Secret is an absolute rollercoaster of mystery, suspense, and family drama. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Crowe expertly weaves a web of secrets, betrayals, and twists that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. The characters are deeply developed, with motivations that feel real and compelling. The way Crowe explores family dynamics—especially the tension between love, loyalty, and hidden truths—is nothing short of brilliant. Each character brings something unique to the story, making the stakes feel all the more personal as the plot unfolds. What I loved most about this book is how Crowe keeps the suspense high without ever letting the plot get too convoluted. The pacing is perfect—slow enough to build tension, but fast enough to keep you turning pages late into the night. And the twist! I honestly didn’t see it coming. It’s one of those reveals that leaves you thinking long after the book is over. This is definitely a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers, family dramas, or anyone who enjoys a story filled with depth, suspense, and shocking revelations. Caleb Crowe has truly crafted something special with The Family Secret. Highly recommended!
I've read a good few books now by this author and have really enjoyed them all - so when I spotted this new release heading our way, I knew that I'd want to dive in straight away.
I instantly loved this front cover which looked quite different to my previous reads - I think it was the start contrast between the plain white house image and the bright pink title.
Charlotte has the perfect happy life, but when she collapses on a night out, she discovers that she has a rare condition and needs a bone marrow transplant. In desperation, she discovers that she has a brother that she's never met, who was adopted at birth and she manages to track him down in time for him to offer help with the transplant.
I had never heard of this condition before and it was interesting to read about how finding her brother, really helped Charlotte to recover. Sadly, the problems began once John came to stay for their recovery.
This was a really well researched storyline and one that also kept me guessing to the end.
In true Crowe style, the atmosphere is created instantly and this hooks us in from the first few pages. The pace kept me invested and I raced through this in just a couple of sittings.
Another great read and I'm already looking forward to my next one soon.
The wrong neighbour by Caleb was a five star read for me, so it’s safe to say, I was excited to be diving into another one of his books. The blurb really did reel me in and it instantly felt like this would be a read I could really sink my teeth into.
It felt as though I was thrown in to the story straight away and I love it when a book does this. At times I generally felt fear for some of the characters, I was on edge but then at the other parts, I felt a whole lot of frustration, I just wanted to scream at them to do something!
The read was split into parts, each one packing a punch, it was intense right up to the very end. I did find things a little predictable at times, I’m putting it down to I’ve had a number of back to back thrillers so I’m switched on at the moment, but despite guessing some parts, the book was still very, very enjoyable.
The Family Secret had a strong revenge plot with clever twists and turns. The Wrong Neighbour is still up there for me as it felt a little darker, but safe to say, I think Caleb is an author that will keep impressing me.
Charlotte finds herself facing conflict both external and internal. She has insufferable neighbors who are stubborn and unwilling to negotiate, she finds out she has a debilitating disease, and she is grappling with the loss of her father, who, before he dies, reveals a family secret that could save Charlotte’s life.
After she explores the option given to her by her father, her three initial conflicts resolve. However, the character in her life creates a new set as she finds herself battling for her freedom and safety.
This was a little bit of a slow burn to start, and I was wondering where it would go, but about 45% of the way through I was hooked and could not put it down. I was reading everywhere in every chance I got. I feared for Charlotte and everyone in her life—neighbors included.
Her troubles raise the question: what are we willing to pay in exchange for our lives? Is evil genetic?
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Caleb Crowe does it again with The Family Secret! This was a gripping, fast-paced thriller that pulled me in right from the start. What I enjoyed most was the intense family dynamic woven throughout the story. Crowe really knows how to explore the complicated layers of loyalty, resentment, love, and betrayal that exist within families.
The tension builds steadily as secrets begin to unravel, and just when you think you have it figured out, another twist shifts everything. I loved how the author reminds us that just because someone is family doesn’t automatically mean they deserve your trust. That theme was handled so well and felt both realistic and unsettling.
The pacing kept me turning the pages late into the night, and the emotional stakes made the story even more impactful. If you enjoy psychological thrillers filled with family drama, buried secrets, and unexpected revelations, this one is definitely worth picking up.
Thank you, NetGalley & Inkubator Books, for the e-ARC!
3.75 ⭐️ rounded up
The Family Secret is a fast-paced, easy-to-read domestic thriller. It was definitely a page turner. I had a really clear visual in my head while reading it, which for me is always a sign of a strongly written environment. The tense atmosphere can be felt throughout, and the pacing works.
It’s a solid revenge plot, just a familiar one. I didn’t really have any jaw on the floor reactions. It was twisty, but not as surprise-twisty as I expected it to be. I also didn’t fully connect with the characters. Once the antagonist’s motive became clear, I kept waiting for another twist I didn’t see coming, but it never really arrived.
Overall, I did enjoy this. It kept me engaged, I wanted to keep reading, and I appreciated the shorter chapters.
This was my first read from Caleb Crowe, and I’d probably pick up more from him!
Wow what a good book really enjoyed it . Charlotte is the main character and she is married with a 7year old boy Bobby . Everything seems fine in their life until Charlotte starts fainting so she goes to the doctor for blood tests . The test results are bad news and reveal she has a plastic anemia and her only way of getting better is a bone marrow transplant and that a sibling is her best option . Charlotte believes she’s an only child till she goes to visit her dad who reveals she has a brother but dosent know where he is . Charlotte goes on a search and finally finds him and he agrees to help her . What Charlotte dosent know is it’s going to come at a huge price that will change her life in ways she could never have imagined . This book will keep you turning pages to find out what happens .
This one intrigued me as a mix of medical, psychological and domestic thriller. Of course I was in!
This book slowly gripped me and before I knew it I was hooked. I found myself racing through the pages - as the plot thickened, my pulse quickened. Never mind the edge of my seat, I was practically levitating the action was so fraught and tense.
Just as I thought things couldn't get any worse they took a truly dark and gruesome turn that I hadn't anticipated. Let's just say I was speechless.
The moral of the story is just because someone is blood, it doesn't mean they wish you well.
This is my first Caleb Crowe novel but I'll definitely read some more in the future.
I received an ARC copy of The Family Secret and absolutely devoured it. This was my first time reading anything by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last. From the very beginning, the story pulled me in and never let go. The book is packed with twists and turns that kept me guessing and thoroughly entertained throughout. Just when I thought I had things figured out, another surprise would come along and change everything. The pacing was spot-on, making it impossible to put down. If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers filled with suspense and shocking revelations, The Family Secret is a must-read. I highly recommend it and give it a solid 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Family Secret is another unputdownable read from Caleb Crowe. After a life-saving transplant reconnects Charlotte with the brother she never knew she had, his presence in her home begins to feel less like a miracle and more like a menace.
This is a gripping, twist-filled thriller that kept me hooked from beginning to end. Once the story gets going and the pacing picks up, the atmosphere becomes incredibly tense and almost claustrophobic. I felt constant unease and dread but COULD NOT stop reading.
Even when I thought I knew where the story was headed, I STILL wasn’t right. A strong 4.5-star read for me!
The Family Secret was a great read! The story had many aspects that pulled me in starting from Charlotte's love for her son, then her finding out she was sick, then finding out she had a brother, and the drive she had to protect her family after moving her brother to her property and things started going awry. The plot moved along well and kept me interested and reading. I did not expect the ending and how it played out. Somethings apparently do run in the family after all. Definitely a good addition to Caleb's other books. Highly recommend!
You have the perfect life until you don’t! All you need is a bone marrow transplant but you are an only child, until you aren’t. You find your brother you didn’t know about and he is a perfect match! Life is perfect again or is it? Of course it isn’t because that would be a boring book and this one is anything but boring. This one takes all over with some awesome characters that truly come to life right in front of us! The twists are incredible and unexpected. Truly a great story that will keep you turning pages!
The Family Secret by Caleb Crowe. This was a good read. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I liked the writing style and the story. I did find it slow to start. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down. I really didn't expect that to happen. I wasn't sure how I felt about the characters. I know I absolutely didn't like John at all. He terrified me. Miriam I didn't like either. She was crazy. But I didn't love them either. This is the 4th book I have read by this author. Very surprising and twisty and gripping. I did like the end.
Caleb Crowe has done it again! A huge thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. This book is AMAZING! I felt so many emotions on this little roller-coaster. The unexpected twists just kept coming. I love the way Caleb Crowe manages to create a world that is so realistic and horrific in ways that make me question what on earth I would do if I was the MC. I will read anything this author writes...forever!
A psychological thriller that keeps you guessing as to what’s going to happen, it was like waiting for something to drop, a brother you knew nothing about suddenly back in you life, I loved the suspense and tension in this. Such a good read, well written, clever plot and a great concept of the medical need for getting in touch with an unknown sibling. I’ll definitely be looking out for another book by this author.
