Stuck in a ditch in the middle of a snowstorm was bad enough, but add in the fact that she was eight months pregnant with her sister’s child and had a broken cell phone, life was a disaster, or so she thought.

Then Zoe Avery started having contractions. Now, a disaster had turned into something even Zoe couldn’t laugh her way through.

Then a stranger showed up.

In Her Unexpected Joy, Caitlyn O’Leary’s ninth book in the Protectors of Jasper Creek series, we get Zoe’s story (Chloe’s twin sister). There was a teaser at the end of the last book that left me anxiously awaiting this book. Zoe, acting as a surrogate, is carrying Chloe and Zarek’s baby and goes into early labor in the middle of a snowstorm while driving. Adam and his 4-year old son, James, come across Zoe trapped in a ditch in labor. Adam is calm, capable and strong; he is a widower of a couple of years and is only focused on raising his amazing son until he meets Zoe. Even in the pain of labor, Zoe is sarcastic and indomitable - pretty typical for an Avery. Zoe giving birth in the backseat of Adam’s truck is pretty intense, but James manages to provide some comic relief throughout.
Zoe and Adam form a bond through the shared experience and as fate would have it, Adam is planning a move to Jasper Creek for an upcoming job. Their relationship takes a little time to build, but it is obvious that Adam is falling hard and fast. Zoe is struggling with some issues and is a little slower to accept where they are headed - and honestly, she falls for his son James even faster than she falls for Adam. Zoe is working through some personal issues and also dealing with the emotional cost of being a surrogate, which is handled so beautifully by the author.
Unlike some of the books in this series, there are only a few small doses of danger, so the focus is really on building the wonderful relationship. One of the elements that I really loved was when Zoe pushed Adam to share his burdens, something that had not really been a part of his previous marriage (even though it was a good relationship). I prefer the stories that show relationships as partnerships with two strong people.
As with any books involving the Avery clan and Jasper Creek, there is a lot of loving meddling and a huge extended support group. Angelica from the Drakos clan also plays a large role as Zoe’s best friend and I can’t wait for her story which looks to be next in the series. I’m a huge fan of this author, and I highly recommend this book or anything by her. I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'll start by saying this is one of my favorite series.

This book opens with the continuation of the ending scene in book 8 Her Unending Horizon, and I have waited patiently to find out what happened when Zoe Avery went in the ditch... At 8 months pregnant 🫣, with her sisters baby she was being surrogate for.

So the beginning of this book starts out with a pretty nail-biting scene.
I'm glad I had a pretty lazy week planned so I've ignored the chores and kept turning the pages as our Hero of the hour
Adam Beckett (and his adorable son James) find Zoe in the ditch in the snowstorm going into labor, alone on a deserted mountain road?
Yeah intense!
But again Ms O'Learys words brought the scene to life, Adam with 4 years old James, who brought some lighter moments throughout the delivery in the back of Adam's Ford F-150 (All I could think of was that it's a good job Americans like super sized utes 🤣.)

We get a sweet slow burn romance, with a bit of suspense from both Zoe's and Adams workplaces.

Favorite character... James
Favorite scene... When James is talking about sleepovers 😉

The book was everything I was waiting for, and yay there'll be another book in October 😁 go grab your copy now.

What an absolute joy Her Unexpected Joy #9 in the Protectors of Jasper Creek series turns out to be and definitely my favourite by far. Zoe Avery is my people, she's bold, sassy and a take the bull by the horns type of person, she's also kind, caring and fiercely loyal to family and friends. I think the opening scenes are brilliant, we know what is coming (if you read the previous book in the series) and Zoe is normally a laugh in the face of adversity person but even she struggles when she ends up stuck n her car, in a ditch, in a snow storm at 8 months pregnant and in labour. Her savours arrive in the form of Adam Beckett and his 4 year old son James. There is just something about Adam and I defy you not to fall for him., calm, competent, gentle and funny, at least when he's delivering Zoe's baby in the back of his truck. Not a meet cute but it is the forging of a connection and feelings that neither expected but both want to explore.
I love Zoe and Adam for each other, she battles her insecurities over deserving happiness whilst Adam learns he can lean on Zoe's strength and share his burdens. Their story is also laced with the humour you'd expect from the author, I laughed and smiled so much and James is a hoot with his own special brand of questions and view of life. A little bit of suspense, some drama, plenty of emotions, a romance that makes me happy, wonderful characters, small town warm and nosiness and pure laughter - it is a fabulous story and I totally recommend you read it! Thank you Caitlin O'Leary!

A snowstorm, a car in a ditch, and a surrogate mother going into labor—this story had me hooked from the very first chapter.

Zoe is carrying a baby for her twin, and giving birth alone was never part of the plan. When a stranger named Adam comes to her rescue, helping her escape the wrecked car, neither of them realizes just how much that moment will change their lives.

I loved the banter between Zoe and Adam, the growing romance, and the way one little boy completely steals your heart. As someone who also raised a little boy who constantly shared dinosaur facts, I couldn't help but smile—it brought back so many wonderful memories.

This isn't just a sweet small-town romance, though. Beneath the heartwarming moments is an undercurrent of danger that keeps the story exciting and the pages turning.

I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with the wonderful cast of characters. The sense of community in this small town, where everyone looks out for one another, made the story even more special.

A heartwarming, emotional romance filled with love, laughter, suspense, and unforgettable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Zoe & Alex

Such a great story! I just love Alex & Zoe. I love how Alex didn’t hesitate to help Zoe when she slid into the ditch, even when he realized she was not only very pregnant, but in active labor. He didn’t miss a beat. He also kept his boy, James, calm and occupied.

This story is captivating and exciting right from the start. James is a hoot and his intense love of everything dinosaur makes you smile. He feels it’s his job to teach someone all he knows about them. I enjoyed Little Grandma’s interaction with James and how she made him feel loved.

I’m impressed with Zoe’s thoughtful business sense with her shop showcasing local artisan’s to help them sell their wares and get word out of the beautiful pieces in her shop.

This story has all the feels. Family is very involved because the baby Zoe is carrying is her sister and brother-in-law’s child and they are always making sure Zoe is healthy and happy. The emotions involved in being a surrogate is intense and Zoe has support from friends and family alike. This is exciting and heartwarming with a bit of danger thrown in for fun to keep things interesting and moving along nicely.

Love this!

Zoe and Adam

I thoroughly enjoyed coming back to Jasper Creek. I love the characters I have gotten t know reading each book. Zoe and Adam are no exception. Zoe is one of the most giving people you would ever want to meet. She is devoted to her family and friends. She unexpectedly runs into trouble during a snowstorm on her way home. She skidded into a ditch with no cell service. Luckily for her, Adam Beckett and his son James happened to see her predicament and stopped to help. Complicating matters further, she seems to be in labor. She and Adam bonded over this situation. When they get back to "civilization," they are drawn to each other. They started a friendship that quickly becomes more. Adam moved to Jasper Creek for a job opportunity. Things between them grew. When danger finds Zoe from an unexpected place, can Adam get to her in time? Get this book and find out. I loved everything about this story! I read it almost in one sitting. I was totally wrapped up in the story and didn't want it to end. Definite 5 stars. Caitlyn O'Leary never disappoints.

Zoe will do anything for those she cares about which is how she finds herself in a dire situation when she goes into labour with the baby she is carrying for her sister. She finds herself stranded trying to decide the best way to handle it when Adam and James, his four-year-old son, are there when she needs someone the most where they not only provide a sense of calm but a distraction as well.

Adam and James have recently moved to town and the connection that they share with Zoe due to their first meeting doesn’t end there. Once again they are there when she needs someone the most as she deals with the aftermath of the precious gift she has just given and the effect it has on her life.

This is a touching romance with a touch of suspense. I enjoyed the pacing of the story as Zoe was dealing with a lot and the small moments they spent together cemented the feelings they had for each other before taking the leap. James was beyond adorable and the relationship he shared with Zoe was endearing.

𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐨𝐲 is the 9th book in the Protectors of Jasper Creek series by Caitlyn O’Leary, featuring an unforgettable love story for Zoe and Adam. From their heart-pounding meeting in a snowstorm needing to deliver the baby she carried for her sister, to the raw emotion, sweet family moments, and hilarious moments with little James, I couldn’t get enough of them! They immediately had an intense, unexplainable connection and chemistry that just fit with the endlessly entertaining banter and vibe of the Jasper Creek small town charm with a side of suspense. This is one of my favorite series for satisfying my former military romantic suspense craving. This author has a unique gift for building authentic worlds full of compelling characters guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, swoon, and bit your fingernails with worry. I cherish every visit to Jasper Creek!

I received an advanced review copy, and my opinions are my own.

Zoe and Adam meet during a snowstorm. From their first meeting there are unexpected surprises, laughter, chemistry and a precocious four year old named James. Adam is a widower who rescues Zoe with his son James. Loved all the dinosaurs that James keeps giving us tidbits on through out the book. You will enjoy how James keeps them all on their toes. Adam and James relocate to Jasper Creek and start to settle in. When they seek Zoe out she can’t believe they are in Jasper Creek. Adam declares his feelings for Zoe early on but Zoe is feeling like she isn’t good enough for him. When their friends, family and especially Little Grandma get involved will Zoe finally realize she is perfect for Adam and James. When danger finds her can Adam get to her in time? This book is outstanding! There is intrigue, surprises, twists and small town living at its best. You will thoroughly enjoy this well written book! 5+ stars.

We are back in Jasper Creek and this time the story belongs to Zoe Avery and Adam Beckett.
Zoe has overcome a great deal and faces life with a positive attitude. Even when someone else might fall into tears.
She’s eight months pregnant with her sister’s child and this usually “take by the storm gal” finds herself in a situation she’s not sure how to handle. It’s not being in the middle of a snowstorm , with no cell connection, and no one around, that throws her in a tizzy , but going into to labor, yikes !
Thankfully Adam and his son James come along and becomes her savior.
What neither expected was what laid ahead. Especially when unexpected feelings develop.
Not only is the plot engaging , but the characters are likable and well developed. Loved four year old James.
Another winner in the series.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Her Unexpected Joy is just that. It's emotional and full of fun, sass, and so much love. Zoe is fabulous with her big heart and sassy sailor mouth. When she's stranded in a ditch in the throes of labour, the snark and humour bowl you over, even as the situation is serious yet beautiful.

Adam steadily charms you, while James completely steals your heart. I love how Adam and Zoe click without any fanfare, building a genuine chemistry and attraction. They sizzle and burn hot even as they make you laugh hard and love them even more.

This town, along with their friends and family, never fails to pull you into their web. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop as they grew stronger together. Danger arrives in different forms but never gets far, as these men take care of their own and are natural protectors.

Read it, and keep falling in love with this crew and their town.

Can we just start with discussing James ~ What A Little Pistol! Who wouldn't fall in love with him? He is definitely one of a kind, polite Little Man that reflects so well on Adam, his Dad. Zoe & Adam's "meet cute" was certainly scary, but the banter early on between them was so original & honest you just had to root for them to become the couple that deserved a beautiful HEA. It's always so enjoyable to read updates on all the previous characters of Jasper Creek - especially Little Grandma, the Matriarch of that Community. I loved reading about Zoe's creation Gathered, & how it seems she pooled the resources of the Community & made something wonderful for herself & others. And of course Caitlyn had to hook us right into her next installment - Angelica's story. It promises to be another great read. I can't wait.

Returning to Jasper Creek feels like catching up with old friends, and Caitlyn O'Leary has once again delivered a story that i found impossible to put down.

Zoe Avery is a fantastic heroine-sassy, independent, and resilient, yet still carrying the insecurities left by her childhood. Adam is the perfect match for her: strong, dependable, calm in a crisis, and a wonderful father to his little boy, James. In fact, James almost steals the show with his hilarious commentary and heartwarming personality.

Filled with excitement, warmth, romance, and plenty of emotion, this book has everything I've come to love about the Jasper Creek series. I was completely invested in the characters from beginning to end, and I already can't wait for my next visit to Jasper Creek. Another fantastic read from Caitlyn O'Leary that I highly recommend!

Jasper Creek just keeps Going and Growing

A down to earth great small town romance with an entrance only Zoe Avery could provide. That was ... no words greatness how her and Adam met. Crazy enough to actually happen in real life, not just Jasper Creek.
Adam's son James was all the cherries on top of cuteness, cleverness, and little boy logic.
Not without some intense drama coming out of the blue which added even more to this journey.
Wondering now if the drama surrounding Adam, Renzo, Ford and their boss's construction project will be ongoing or did they actually cause Pacific Rim to pull out of wanting the Jasper Creek area for development?
I loved both the hero and heroine here as they both left quite an impression on me. Opposites can be so fun together and cause a lot of burst out laughing.

Love and sabotage

Moving to Jasper Creek Adam and his son for a new job, local Zoe got to meet up close and personal when rescued from a ditch and in labor, delivering a baby in the back of a truck in a snow storm isn't what she wanted, keeping a4 year old occupied has it's challenges, getting to know each other more, comfortable with each other and little James, small town gossip is making the rounds, odd things are happening with each of their places of work, it's all fun and games until someone is hurt and Jasper Creek and it's people band together with onyx security leading the way, fast paced, slow burn love story, family always first, be it blood or found, seeing old friends is icing on the cake, Caitlyn O'Leary, I love you, and Zoe, Adam and James story is the best, thank you for your stories, Dana Zamora

Oh I love small town romances and I especially love Jasper Creek and the Avery Sisters. In Her Unexpected Joy, Zoe Avery is the surrogate for her Sister Chloe and I was so excited for Zoe's book! Boy her book started off with a Bang! Zoe finds herself in an accident where she finds herself in labor. Enter Adam and his little one James! Adam is cool headed while James is sharp witted and is so adorable. He almost steals the show. This is a falling in love story, where Zoe has to work through her past to regain her future. A little suspense and a lot of character growth! You also get a lot of wisdom from Little Grandma.
I love coming back to Jasper Creek, catching up with everyone there! This is a pick up and can't put it down book! Zoe and Adam are absolutely fantastic!

Zoe is a surrogate for her twin and her husband and gets stuck in a ditch during a snowstorm. While stuck in the ditch Adam and his son come to her rescue. I absolutely adored this book. Zoe has always been the more reckless sibling and is trying to prove she's not the same person she once was. Adam helps her see that she is so much more than her past mistakes. Adam is so sure about what he wants and doesn't leave room for misinterpretation is so refreshing. Adam is used to being the one who shoulders everything and Zoe being able to support him is something he didn't realize he needed. This has all the best of Jasper Creek with a heartwarming romance, found family and a little mystery/danger.

Zoe goes into labor after sliding off the road into a ditch in the middle of a snowstorm and is rescued by Adam Beckett and his 4 year old son James and delivers her twin sisters baby in the back of his truck. Adam and James move to Jasper Creek to find a new beginning after his wife died when. While Zoe and Adam are getting to know each other every one in Jasper Creek is already in love with James. He is as precocious as Zoe's niece Bella and one of my favorite characters in this story. James steals the story. This book has all the feels and is very well written and I can't wait until the next one. I read an Advanced e-copy and am Voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Adam and Zoe meet in a snowstorm with even more extenuating circumstances. Zoe is carrying her twin sister Chloe’s baby. When her jeep goes off the road, Adam stops to help. Turns out the baby is coming a month early and Adam is there to deliver the baby with his 4 year old son with him. Later, they meet again when Adam moves to Jasper Creek to be an architect. Zoe is already in love with his son and it doesn’t take long before she loves Adam as well. Zoe is struggling with depression after handing the baby over to her twin Chloe but Adam is there to keep an eye on her and be her support. Of course, danger finds Adam at his job and he worries about Zoe’s safety. But are there other dangers to watch in Zoe’s world? You don’t want to miss this great addition to the series!!!!

Her Unexpected Joy

OMG! This story definitely gives you all the feels of a love story. This story is definitely not the way you expect a couple to meet. Zoe was on a road back home during a blizzard and almost got hit. Check of a time for her niece to decide it was time to make her appearance in the world. Luckily Adam and James were on the same road as her and stopped to help. That is basically the start of their relationship. The danger was totally unexpected. Adam came to her rescue. Now this couple works on their happy ending. James is a hoot! How can you not fall in love with this kid. FANTASTIC job Caitlyn! I would highly recommend this book! Can't wait for Angelica's book!

I’ve been waiting so eagerly for Zoe’s book, and it did not disappoint—it kicks off with a total bang! When an unexpected accident throws Zoe into labor, enter Adam and his sharp-witted son, James, who almost steals the whole show.

This story has everything: a cool-headed hero, high-stakes emotion, a touch of suspense, and incredible character growth as Zoe works through her past. Plus, getting wisdom from Little Grandma and catching up with the rest of the Jasper Creek family makes it feel like coming home.

Zoe and Adam are fantastic together. An unputdownable, heartwarming small-town romance from start to finish!

I love coming back to Jasper Creek and the Avery bunch!

Zoe Avery finds herself in a bit of a pickle when she makes a quick trip while 8 months with her twin sister Chloe's baby. Crashed into a ditch with labor pains and no cell phone she is rescued by Adam Beckett and his 4 year old son James.

I absolutely love Zoe and her sassy self. Little James Beckett stole every scene he was in with his "Okey Dokey" and his dinosaur facts! Adam and Zoe are perfect for each other and I love how the Residents of Jasper Creek rallied around Zoe, Adam and James welcomed the single father and his son.

I really hope that Angelica Drakos is next to get her story!

Zoe and Adam had quite the unique meet-cute and it was amazing. I’m personally not big on kids/pregnancy/family, but their story is a great one. Honestly, I’d give this one 4.5 stars because the conflict seems really forced and slowed down the middle of the story. I almost wish the story had just focused on the two of them forming their new family and there was a lack of Avery involvement (which seems a little unrealistic considering how much action Zoe sees in the first 20 pages!). It’s always a joy to return to Jasper Creek and little James made this admitted non-kid person laugh out loud multiple times, quite the feat!

Don't Bother

This book. So poorly done and boring for 80% of it. There is so much back story in these books that the author does a terrible job describing. The reader is left more confused than enlightened.

There were typos/details that were incorrect. In an early chapter she called James, Adam. There was often incorrect punctuation.

Factual errors, she mentions a sheriff who lived in Alaska. I am a lifelong Alaskan and there are no sheriffs in Alaska. Troopers yes. Local cops yes. Sheriffs no.

The dialogue was immature. The book was simply poorly written.

Save yourself the time and money and look for a different author.

It was with much anticipation that I started reading this story, it’s a continuation of the ending of the previous book.

Zoe, who is 8 months pregnant, is stuck in a snowstorm and worse yet stuck in a ditch and no way to get out. It’s Adam to the rescue, he finds and rescues her but then has to deliver the baby.

I just love how these two get to know each other and how they start to fall in love. There is so much chemistry between them, but are hesitant to make a move. And then there’s Adam’s son, who just steals our heart.

Such a great story all around, wonderful characters you want to be friends with.

“It’s beautiful, heartwarming, hilarious, with just the right amount of steam and suspense.”

Humor can’t get Zoe out of the mess she’s gotten herself in this time…. in labor stuck in a ditch, in a snowstorm. When the contractions start and time is running out a handsome stranger, Adam and his adorable little boy, James comes to her rescue. That’s where this beautiful emotional story begins.
And what comes after is one of the best stories Caitlyn has ever written!
"Thank you for writing this story.”

The first chapter introduces the main characters under unusual circumstances. Zoe Avery loves Jasper Creek and her siblings. Adam Beckett, a single dad, discovers Zoe in a ditch during a snowstorm. His job brings him and his son, James, to Jasper Creek. Zoe and Adam make an awesome couple, and James adds humor to the equation. There is a little trouble at Adam's job site, and Zoe finds one of her employees doing something illegal. This story has a great mixture of suspense and romance, and the reader sees character growth. Come to Jasper Creek and visit with all the wonderful characters.

Then comes Adam and his son, James to the rescue…what happens next is some intense scenes, chemistry, suspense, some laughs, working through the past, friends, family and a HEA they all deserve!
