Seventeen-year-old Ruby Lewis thrives on control. As student council president, swim team captain, and top AP student, she’s built a life where success depends on no one but herself.
Until fire erupts from her hands.
Ruby discovers she’s inherited elemental magic tied to a family legacy her mother believes should be abandoned. To her family, power is a curse, one that has already caused too much damage. But giving it up may cost Ruby more than she’s willing to lose.
Pulled into a hidden world of other magically gifted teens, Ruby is forced to rely on a team for the first time in her life. Trust doesn’t come easily, especially when she’s always competed alone.
Then Nestor makes his move.
A powerful enemy who has waited generations for another chance at control, Nestor kidnaps Ruby into his realm and tries to turn her against the people she’s only just begun to call family. With history threatening to repeat itself, Ruby must decide whether she’ll surrender her power…or finally claim it.
World Ablaze is the first book in Bloodlines of Power, a YA urban fantasy series set in New York City. Perfect for readers who love snarky heroines, found family, elemental magic, and high-stakes choices that burn everything to the ground.
World Ablaze follows Ruby. A type A, hyper-focused teen, who strives for perfection in all she does. AP classes, swim team, student council president...
When she starts to feel strange heat within her body, she thinks she's getting sick. Until she accidently sets the living room rug on fire. Ruby reacts as any teen would when discovering they have the elemental power of producing fire: with both fear and excitement. Who wouldn't want cool magic powers?
Along with wrapping her head around her new powers, Ruby must also juggle family tension, homework, new and old friendships, swim team, and planning a school dance. It's no wonder she's exhausted! Gregson does an excellent job of sharing the internal conflict that Ruby feels and paints a realistic picture of a high achieving teen faced with something that takes more effort than she's ever had to use.
I appreciated how thoroughly Gregson set up the character of Ruby and her personality prior to learning of her power. I had a complete picture of who she was and how she would approach this new part of herself within the first chapter or two. Consistency of character can often be lost within the action of a story like this, so it was refreshing to see Ruby be Ruby throughout, while also realistically learning and growing from the experience.
I felt intrigued by the side characters as much as Ruby. I wanted to know more about Medow, Nicolette, Natalia, and Chloe. Gregson shared enough about their history that I yearn to know their full stories and hope that we will continue to learn about them in the coming books.
This Young Adult series will be perfect for fans of contemporary urban fantasy and magical realism. I can see teens relating to the characters, imagining themselves with elemental powers and what they would do with them.
World Ablaze is an awesome start to a series rooted in elemental magic, ancestral lineage, and the power of women rising together.
Ruby’s journey unfolds in such an organic way as she begins to discover her fire-based abilities. What I loved most was how her awakening wasn’t rushed, but built slowly.
The generational thread of women carrying these powers adds a rich layer of depth and connection. There’s a beautiful sense of legacy and shared strength woven throughout the story.
The stakes feel real, and the author isn’t afraid to let the intensity land. And that ending… definitely left me eager for what’s next.
A powerful beginning to a series I’ll absolutely keep reading.
I adored.this book! Watching Ruby grow and discover her magic was a delight, and I'm always a sucker for found family. I loved how history and her family's past wove into the story, adding a depth to this YA fantasy. As a former NYC girl myself, I also appreciated how the author captured the unique energy of the city -- made me miss it all over again! I'm already looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
The way Gregson writes characters pulls me right into her books and this was no exception. Ruby's world was so interesting to be pulled into. I can't wait to read more in book 2 next year!
