Sweet. Savory. Slightly unhinged. Who doesn’t want a love story like that?

I, Marlow Brown, do not.

I have goals. I run a diner, and I’m saving for a beach vacation where a man who looks like Cristiano Ronaldo serves me drinks in coconuts. I’m also raising my teenage brother. Helping Brady reach adulthood without going to juvie is my top priority—along with teaching him to drive and keeping the truth about him a secret. Minor goals.

I just have to put out the literal fire in my kitchen first.

Luckily, my friend August is here to help. He’s always here—putting out fires, rescuing me from the walk-in fridge, and being way too observant for comfort. Usually, I repay him in pancakes, but I’m starting to suspect he wants something else.

(Me. August wants me. I’m afraid I might want him, too. And we’re going to mess up all of my plans.)

Ok, this book is AMAZING!!

Every second there was something making me laugh, smile, sigh, swoon, or get teary eyed.

August, 🥇 here’s your gold medal for winning swooniest MMC. Your sacrificial, quiet love for Marlow did me in. Among being a doctor and a volunteer firefighter, he was the soft place Marlow needed. The constant supporter and encourager. He was the confused, attitude-ridden teenage whisperer. Whatever Marlow needed, he was there.

“We’ve known each other for four years, Marlow. And I’ve loved you for every minute of those four years,”

🥓 🥞 🥓🥞🥓🥞🥓🥞🥓🥞🥓🥞

Marlow was so real and raw. She’s struggling. She’s lost and overwhelmed. But she didn’t want to be a burden or indebted to anyone. When her life went up in flames (literally) August was there. As were so many others. Seeing people come together to help her, no questions asked, opened her eyes and heart to the truth that it’s ok to ask for help and need people.

If you’ve read any books by Elise before then you know there’s so much humor in her stories. The inner thoughts of her FMCs take the cake.

“Uh-oh. He’s Fighter Pilot August again today, wearing those sunglasses that make him manly and mysterious.”

“Hellooooo.” This is my favorite version of August. There’s Doctor August, Fireman August, and Rolling-the-Trash-Can-to-the-Curb-in-His-Pajamas August, but Lumberjack August is the best by far—the blue jeans, the leather gloves, the muscles, the sweat.”

I’m so seriously in love with this story! This is one you don’t want to miss!

Thank you to Elise Haynes for the copy. All opinions are my own.

Don't come for me! 😭

Listen I've read every single one of Elise's book and love them! She is an auto buy and auto read author for me! This one just didn't hit for me.

Marlow's life is a dumpster fire. And she is keeping this big secret that is ruining her life. Thing after thing after thing kept happening and when you pair that with the self depreciating, it was just too much. And at one point it just took me out of the story because everything just kept going wrong and it wasn't enjoyable to read anymore. Also, she is so oblivious to August, and how he feels about her... I just couldn't connect with her. I also had such a hard time with how she "parented" Brady. That kid got away with murder and didn't have ANY consequences.

August our main man he's sold out for our girl and has been for four years. While I liked August he was a little too perfect and didn't have any flaws. I also felt like the two of them were not on equal levels. August gave and gave and gave and Marlow was a walking disaster 😬 Them as a couple didn't make sense. I loved everything that he spewed from his mouth though. He was so sweet and thoughtful towards Marlow, and I loved his interactions with Brady.

I wish we would have had August's POV. It would have brought a lot of clarity to the story. To see what his thoughts on everything were would have maybe helped me liked them more??

This was a sweet story about leaning on others, the freedom that comes when sharing your secrets, and the belief in happy endings. I was happy to have some crossover characters reappear, and I can't wait for Stevie's story!

Thanks Elise for this arc. All opinions are my own.

Casual August is easier to talk to than Doctor August with the sinful scrubs.

The man has quadriceps. Big, toned running muscles are showing under his black gym shorts. And I’ve got two noodle legs covered in goosebumps.

“But that’s not how friendship works. I’m not keeping score. I want to help you.”

There’s a gentle spring breeze today, blowing a few of the crinkly white blooms off the cherry tree. They flutter to the ground like Mother Nature’s confetti, celebrating the end of winter.

No wonder August doesn’t host our get- togethers. His female friends would never leave because of that sexy rolling ladder.

“Good. Second, this should go without saying, but when a person lives with me, I take care of them.”

Now that I’ve had a taste, will I be able to spend time with August without discreetly sliding my hands under his shirt to grope his abs?

but the scent of his aftershave makes me want to giggle and twirl my ponytail around my finger.

“Did you know that your laugh is my favorite sound in the world?”

“I need you around me, Marlow. If you come with a mess, I’ll take it. Happily.”

“Of being so close to you. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay away. I’ve wanted you since I met you. I tried to respect your need for time, but I’ve barely held it together these past four years.”

“We’ve known each other for four years, Marlow. And I’ve loved you for every minute of those four years,”

“For fifty- one months I’ve lived with your sassy mouth, that dang laugh of yours, and the way your lips turn down when you don’t get your way. I couldn’t kiss you fast enough. You needed time, and I waited.”

“You’ve had your way long enough. You’ve called every shot with us. Until now. Not this time. I’m not letting you push me away. I’m not letting you pull a penny out of your pocket to ruin things just when it’s getting good. Sorry.”

“You don’t need to pay me back, and we don’t need to take turns. I love you, Marlow. That’s why I take care of you— not just because you live here, or because you can’t do it yourself. I love you,”

“You’ve had my heart for four years, Marlow. It’s yours. It always has been.”

you’ve turned me into a believer.”

This is a refreshingly different kind of story where the heroine, Marlow, faces one disaster after another — and yet the heart of the book is surprisingly tender.

Marlow has a secret son, Brady, and everyone believes he’s her brother. That single twist creates such an interesting mix of guilt, tension, and emotional stakes. The weight of that secret underpins everything, and I was completely gripped wondering how it would eventually unravel.

August is the kind of hero who simply shows up. He’s waited patiently in the friend zone for four years, quietly steady, before finally deciding to let his feelings be known. His motivation isn’t flashy — he just wants to care for Marlow and look after both her and Brady — and honestly? So swoon-worthy. Watching their friendship gradually transform into something deeper is full of sweet, gentle moments and August’s steadfast persistence.

I was especially invested in how the situation with Brady would be resolved. The idea of a son who believes his mother is his sister is such a complex emotional thread, and while I found the journey compelling, the ending didn’t quite deliver the payoff I was hoping for. The resolution felt a little rushed given how layered and complicated that dynamic is.

That said, the relationships in this book — romantic and platonic — feel real and genuine. There’s warmth here, and heart, and a hero who will absolutely win readers over.

Loved this one! Absolutely adored August! If you’re looking for a MMC who’s steadfast, loyal, caring and so gone for her, August is going to be your new favorite! What a weight Marlow had on her shoulders and I am just so happy with how it turned out.

Sweet. Savory. Slightly chaotic… and unexpectedly tender

This book completely snuck up on me. I came in expecting a light, funny small-town romcom—and while it definitely delivered on the laughs (so many laughs), it also brought a surprising amount of heart.

Marlow is messy in the most real way—overwhelmed, overthinking, carrying way too much on her shoulders, and determined not to need anyone. Between running a diner, raising her teenage brother (with a huge secret), and just trying to keep everything from falling apart… she felt incredibly relatable.

And then there’s August.
Not a cinnamon roll.
A full stack of bacon pancakes

He’s steady, patient, quietly devoted, and always showing up—whether it’s putting out literal fires, helping with Brady, or just being the safe place Marlow doesn’t think she deserves. The friends-to-lovers slow burn between them was so soft and swoony, built on years of trust and care.

What I loved most was the community. When everything in Marlow’s life starts to fall apart, people show up. No questions asked. And that message—that it’s okay to need people—hit so deeply.

✨ What stood out:
🥞 Friends-to-lovers slow burn
🏡 Small-town, found family vibes
💛 A quietly devoted, all-in MMC
🌱 Themes of vulnerability, trust, and asking for help
😂 Humor balanced with emotional depth

It’s not perfect—some of the heavier storylines felt like they wrapped up a bit quickly—but the heart of this story? So genuine. So warm. So easy to love.

ARC Note: Thank you to the author for the copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

(making) Bacon Pancakes- a delicious read! 😆

I really liked Enemies to Lobsters, so naturally I had to pick up (making) Bacon Pancakes to read Marlow and August’s story.

Sweet Marlow had so much on her plate & everything was going wrong. Her own mind was taking its own guilt trip to the Caribbean without her. She could never get out from under its weight. I definitely have felt guilt this heavy, and I sympathized with her need to feel independent and so things herself (hello, eldest daughter syndrome). Brady gave her ALL the trouble in this book, and I would’ve dealt with him not as patiently as she did. 😬🫠😆

Dr. August Wentworth, my dude!!! He was so, so adorable and the years-long yearning is right up my alley when it comes to my reads. He was an acts-of-service king and just wanted Marlow to love him back. His patience, presence, and kindness were just scrumptious. things people. And might I add, this is a single POV book. Elise did a fantastic job of making that dedication obvious with the best tension and under-the-breath comments. I approve of this message lol.

The family, found and blood, just made this book what it was. Please pick it up, y’all!! Such a good read. Forest Proximity, I’m READY FOR YOU!!!👀🤩🤭🫶🏻

CW: This is a sweet, closed-door romance with no language non-descriptive makeouts. There’s mention of a car wreck, a stroke in a side character (not on page), teen pregnancy, and an absent father.

This is the second book in the series and it was just as sweet as the first!

August’s love for Marlow is the kind that’s steady, fierce, and selfless. he gives EVERYTHING he has to take care of her, and it made my heart ache in the best way. I also really appreciated the depth of Marlow and Brady’s backstory, and getting a satisfying sense of closure there (without spoiling anything!). August was just the sweetest and most caring character and he melted Marlow in a way that made me so happy.

The friends-to-more and forced proximity tropes were fantastic, but what truly stood out to me was the writing. Elise Haynes has such a fun, vivid way of describing things and is so witty! I found myself laughing out loud so many times throughout both books in the series.🤪 It sucks you in as a reader!

Such a joyful, heartfelt read 🤍 I cannot wait for the third book in the series to come out soon!

Wow! This story was amazing and I did not want to set it down.

August is the epitome of a green flag hero. The man has loved Marlow for four years and has been patiently waiting for a chance with her. And Marlow...well, she is completely overwhelmed with life and things just seem to keep going wrong.

I loved that once August began to show Marlow how much he cared about her, he was determined that she not just push them aside as a possibility. He really was a solid and stable support for Marlow in everything she was dealing with.

Their moments together were definitely my favorite things in the story. The moment that he held her hand for the first time...sigh! So perfect. I loved it!

ARC Review- I was so excited to be back for book two of the Cape of Georgean series. Enemies to Lobsters was such a huge surprise for me with being one of my favorite romcoms of this year, so I couldn’t wait to dive back in.

I knew August was head over heels for our girl Marlow at the end of book one, so I was really excited to see how their story would unfold.

I sometimes struggle with the friends-to-more trope because usually there are zero boundaries in the friendship and then everyone’s shocked when someone catches feelings. But this was done well. It felt gradual over time, and they didn’t spend every second together before Bacon Pancakes starts.

The romance was sweet and fun. But this one fell a little flat for me. Marlow was just… a lot. Not in a “don’t call women too much” way, just that she was just all over the place. It ended up being a more stressful read than I expected. And poor Brady was never likable at all. The townspeople also came off more cruel than “chaotic” this time around.

Even so, I still love Elise’s humor and banter throughout, and I’m anxiously waiting to finally get Stevie’s story. Also still planning on reading her entire backlist, I think that this was just a fluke for me. Also brb, going to watch Somewhere in Time because now I’m so curious.

“I’m not going to argue with the man. I’m fighting fire with fire. He thinks he can look like that, talk like that, and brush his leg against mine under the table, and I’m not going to dish it back? Oh, buddy. He thinks he can take care of me and I won’t reciprocate? I’ll take care of him so hard.”

This read was pure unadulterated golden retriever goodness! Seriously though.

Elise has the ability to give her readers uplifting romance without sacrificing complex characters and facing hard things.

Also, the Easter eggs and humor included are top notch!

August Wentworth is the definition of swoon-worthy. The tenderness he has and the way he takes care of Marlowe (and Brady) is second to none!

I loved the imperfection that is Marlowe Brown! She is doing her best in the only way she knows how. Her obliviousness is the cherry on top.

Ok. So you want to talk about a book with a storyline that if something will go wrong, it’s all going to go wrong. This is it. The FMC is basically a dumpster fire with just about every juggling ball falling down.

The storyline flowed really well and kept you reading to find out what mishap was going to happen next.

August is the MMC and he is basically the epitome of waiting on a woman. He has patiently waited for Marlow to realize that he’s there and ready to be fully in her life. The sweet things he does for her and the was he dotes on her is melt worthy.

There are romcom moments in this contemporary romance. The storyline of single parent/teen pregnancy put an interesting element to the story.

Overall I was captivated, smiled, grinned, cringed, but loved the wrap up of this book.

"Your heart? I can feel it. I can almost hear it, love."
"It's not mine anymore. It belongs to you."

Bacon Pancakes by Elise Haynes

Another 5-star Romcom hilarity with heart from Elise!

I adored this second book in the Rumors of Cape Georgeana series. Marlow is a single mom trying to raise her brother/son (It's complicated; just read the book to find out.)August Wentworth is quite literally Superman in doctor's scrubs: He works as a doctor, volunteers as a firefighter, and is renovating his land and house he bought 4 years ago.
He also takes care of those he loves and cares about.

I just adored their chemistry, the yearning (sooo much yearning), their first kiss, and the moments at the baseball games. Also, sexy rolling ladder, playing with hair, and cherry tree moments had me swooning dead away.

I laughed and gasped when the literal fire happened. The part by the graveyard, the lice story, and so many other parts had me giggling like a little schoolgirl.

I appreciated that Marlow was working through how to be a better single parent to Brady. And I loved how August helps her so much with Brady.

All of Elise's books come highly recommended by me, and Bacon Pancakes is no exception! I loved every minute of it.Available soon! Definitely go preorder it today!

Is the middle of March too early to declare your favorite book of 2026?

I'll admit up front that I was predisposed to love this. Bacon? YES. Pancakes? YES. Sweet and swoon-worthy clean closed door romance? Say less.

But it's so nice when things live up to my admittedly high expectations. Marlow is an absolute overthinker, which I can relate to although at a few points I wanted to reach into the book and shake her by the shoulders and say GIRL JUST LET THIS MAN TAKE CARE OF YOU. Because August is an absolute--you know what, in honor of this book I suggest we retire the term "cinnamon roll" and go with "stack of bacon pancakes".

" 'Welcome to adulthood. I hope you like ibuprofen.'
I love ibuprofen. I'm killing it at adulthood."

"Talking to my mother always gives me life." (Girl, SAME.) And later: "Like every good mother, her opinion of me isn’t an accurate reflection of reality. Bless her.”

August. Has. A. Library. With. A. Rolling. Ladder.

"The only adulthood milestone I’ve achieved is the bag full of grocery bags I keep under my sink.”

“Portraying functional, healthy relationships is important. They may not be the norm anymore, but they should be. Happy relationships are the goal. They’re the fabric of a strong society.” August likes romantic movies. I really do need to rewatch Somewhere In Time.

Brady's teacher should be put in jail. I said what I said.

AND THERE IS A RECIPE FOR BACON PANCAKES ON THE LAST PAGE. This book is delicious on so many levels.

Apparently this is the second in a series but can absolutely be read as a standalone. I will however now be going back to read the first book and most likely all the other books this author has written.

Full disclosure: I won a copy of this book in a giveaway and had a very pleasant conversation with the author who seems lovely.

Wow just wow. The yearning between August and Marlow was so delightful. I loved how the story unfolded.

Marlow is raising her younger brother while trying to keep her diner in business. She doesn’t have time for anything else until an apartment fire gives her no place to live. August luckily has an empty apartment available on his property. By sheer forced proximity, August and Marlow deepen their friendship and realize deeper feelings.

Favorite parts
-Marlow snooping in August’s library and him discovering her.
-All the Somewhere in Time movie watching.
-THE WAY HE HELD HER HAND for the first time. Literally melted.
-her mom’s responses to everything happening with August.
-Their friend group who never hesitated to show up
-the family heart to heart
-August keeping track of time.
-the photo— cue happy sigh

Favorite Quotes:
I can’t believe I ever thought I couldn’t handle my life with him. I can’t handle it without him.

And all he wanted was for me to be brave enough to give him my heart.

I would challenge any woman with a pulse and half-functioning brain to not fall in love with August Wentworth.

This is part of the Rumors of Cape Georgeana Series. And while it can be read as a standalone, trust me, you are going to want to read the series.

Marlow has a lot on her plate and it seems like when it rains it pours. But one steady constant in her life is August. But while the responsibilities continue to pile up, Marlow learns the value of having someone you can rely on and who will continue to show up.

Elise Haynes is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. I love how she can create characters that you connect with and stories that have you chuckling one moment and then feeling all the feels the next. I also love how she brings in a retro element - in Enemies to Lobsters it was Tom Selleck and in Bacon Pancakes it is Somewhere in Time.

Also, one of my favorite parts is when Marlow is so overwhelmed that she doesn't know how she can "allow" August to be part of her chaotic life and tries to let him go, and he flat out refuses and tells her No multiple times - which prevented a 3rd act breakup. We all try to self preserve when life gets too hard. I loved that August called her on it and didn't allow her to make an emotional decision and run away.

I also love how the side characters shine in this series. They do crossover in the books and I am looking forward to the rest of this series!!

Quotes:
"Welcome to adulthood. I hope you like ibuprofen."

"No one has their life under control. Not really - not independently, anyway. We all rely on each other. Needing other people is perfectly acceptable adult behavior, so stop using that as an excuse to push me away."

"...adults are allowed to make their own stupid choices."

"Isn't that the definition of patience - wanting to lose your crap, but choosing not to?"

"'What do you mean, you're not going to let me make this our penny?' 'Somewhere in Time. When Richard sees the penny and it drags him back in time, away from Elise. One stupid little penny ruins their whole story.' He's gathering steam now. 'Something so small isn't going to end this. I won't let that happen. I'm sorry, but no,' he pulls my hand back to his leg. 'No.'... 'You've had your way long enough. You've called every shot with us. Until now. Not this time. I'm not letting you push me away. I'm not letting you pull a penny out of your pocket to ruin things just when it's getting good. Sorry.' He presses a hot, urgent kiss to my mouth that ends much to quickly. 'Not this time.'"

You guys. I have yet to not ABSOLUTELY LOVE one of Elise’s books. Her books makes me feel like she’s having a heyday when she writes because they are FULL of banter, tension, longing, and countless laugh-out-loud moments.

Okay, Marlow and August. Get out of town these two were SO perfect! August is as steady as they come; he’s careful and caring in his pursuit of Marlow. He ADORES her and consistently shows up. He believes in her and wants her to believe in herself. One of my favorite parts of this book was watching Marlow fall for her best friend—recognizing her own feelings change and having her heart race at what used to be normal interactions. She fumbles her own words and is awkward in the most endearing way. 😂

Marlow’s life is blowing up in her face, and what’s more reassuring than having someone who always shows up for you during a time like that? There are some real and downright impossible circumstances she’s facing, but August is her silver lining in all of that. Let me say that this book is for those who feel like they’ve hit rock bottom and are ready to throw in the towel. That’s exactly where Marlow is.

August’s longing is tangible you guys. He’s an unapologetic romantic and your heart will be puddy by the end of this book. 🫠

And the Somewhere In Time references??!! I literally watched this movie with my husband a couple days before this book released and I’m SO glad I did solely because there are certain scenes I appreciated so much more. My husband rarely asks about my books but was endlessly curious about this one because of 1) the title, and 2) the movie references. 😂

10/10 recommend, no notes!

~Sweet. Savory. Slightly unhinged. Who does 2/3 want a love story like that?
I, Marlow Brown, do not…

-Okay, okay, my friends, I am here to say that, Bacon Pancakes is such a delightful, swoony, small town romantic comedy. My goodness, each time a new story is released by dear @elisehaynesbooks I think oh this is my new favorite, but once again, the fun continues with each and every story she writes! Bacon Pancakes, is no exception. I just adored this story from cover to cover! I loved the delightful laugh out loud humor, the endearing characters, and the goodness within this story! While yes, there are layered complications, there is also depth and love that overflows! Watching dear characters go from being friends to something more was done so well. I loved the heartfelt moments while seeing dear characters not only yearn for something more. Seeing them find their own joy made my heart sigh with such happiness! Do not miss out on this cute story that will have you laughing and sighing with happy content. It really is a dear story worth reading, any day!🙌🏻🥓🥞📚❤️🙌🏻

What I liked:
I liked the characters overall. I liked that August and Marlow communicated well and there was no drawn out miscommunication between them. August was a sweetheart and I like that he didn't let Marlow break things off when she wanted to. He stood up for them, which was refreshing to see.
I also liked Marlow's parents. They were very supportive of their daughter and they didn't treat her any differently after her teen pregnancy.
I liked the character development Brady went through, too.
As always, I love when authors thank their readers for reading their books! Thank you, Elise, for writing these books!

What I didn't like:
I didn't like the ending. Marlow realizes she can let go of her guilt, which is good, but in doing so she also just... let's go of being a mom? She goes back to thinking of Brady as her brother and doesn't even think about becoming a better mother. It rubbed me the wrong way. And she didn't really learn anything with how to raise Brady or communicate with him either. What would have been better is if the two of them slowly warmed up to each other throughout the book and if they actually communicated. They should have had a nice long chat after Brady's car crash, but that never happens. Or Brady should have confronted Marlow as soon as he found out she was his mother. It was all pretty frustrating.

Overall, the romance was cute, but the book could also be very frustrating and confusing.

Do you know what's great about small town romances? It's the two for one MMCs who work for the volunteer fire department. Sometimes you get a cowboy-firefighter or a handyman-firefighter. This time we get three for one—a doctor-handyman-firefighter!

August has been solving most of Marlow’s problems for years. In her efforts to be on even terms with him, she feeds him breakfast every day at her diner. She thinks it’s gross, but August loves bacon in his pancakes. One morning he puts out a fire in the apartment upstairs from her diner and treats her for smoke inhalation. (I might be remembering this a little bit wrong, but this is true to who August is.) Then he gives her a place to live over his garage. An apartment with a perfect view of his daily wood chopping. Is any of this an inconvenience to August? Of course not, because AUGUST HAS LOVED HER EVER SINCE HE MET HER FOUR YEARS AGO.

Marlow’s life is complicated, so August has been biding his time and pining. But now? He can’t hold back when she’s right outside his door. Oh. My. Goodness. How he slowly breaks down the physical barrier between them! Has hand holding ever been so swoony? Marlow blames her willingness to concede on a romance novel.

I really can’t explain how good this book is without sounding ridiculous. I laughed, swooned, gasped, and laughed and swooned some more. Elise’s stories are always highly anticipated for good reason. Be sure to read this book, including all the back matter (the author info, etc.) to the two very last hilarious paragraphs.

Thank you to Elise for an advance copy of this fantastic book. All these words are my very own opinions.

3.5⭐️ ARC Review: I don’t really know how to feel about this book, and that makes me sad. I LOVE Elise’s books. They are quirky, unexpected, and hilarious. This one was much different from her usual.

Marlow’s life is a mess and she is keeping this huge secret that completely controls her life. And it just bothered me. I really didn’t love her. August on the other hand was incredible. He not only was so good to Marlow, he was incredibly good with Brady. Which leads me into my next point. The single POV situation.

I wasn’t expecting the single POV since the first book in this series is dual POV and so is the other book that I’ve read from her. I think this book would have been much improved for me if we had August’s perspective. You can tell from the very beginning that he loves Marlow, and I appreciated that. But I wanted to see it from his side and not just from Marlow being completely oblivious to the things that he does. And I also wanted to see all of the times he spent with Brady driving. I think we missed out on a lot with that.

On one hand, this was super cute. I loved August and the respect he has for Marlow. They had cute moments together as well. On the other, it just wasn’t what I was expecting and fell flat in multiple ways. I still am very much looking forward to more books by Elise. I just hope this one was a fluke for me!

Read if you enjoy:
- Friends to lovers
- He falls first and harder
- Single POV
- Opposites attract
- Single guardian
- Small town
- Doctor MMC

Content 💋:
- Kisses only
- No language

Bacon Pancakes is the second book in the Rumors of Cape Georgeana series and I loved it! Elise Haynes’ humor once again totally comes through and made me laugh out loud several times. She has the touch of writing awkward moments with so much humor and heart. In Bacon Pancakes, Marlow is trying to raise her brother while running a diner and putting out fires, literally. August is an all-around great guy (with dimples, I might add) taking care of patients, the town, and Marlow. I loved Marlow and August’s chemistry and their natural tendency to help the each other because they genuinely cared. August is just the best and I swooned every time he did something for Marlow. The patience of this man is so endearing. And Marlow trying to find ways to show August she appreciates him is so sweet. Then add what he does to help her with her brother, Brady, and it’s just icing on the cake. There are so many laugh out loud scenes but there are also plenty of tender moments that warm your heart. If you are looking for a sweet and swoony, small-town friends to more story that will keep you laughing until the end then Bacon Pancakes is a must read!

My favorite things:
- The Hooker family
- Come on, the rolling ladder!
- Movie nights & the movie references
- The cherry tree
- August playing with her hair
- “Creep”
- The picture
- The epilogue

Tropes: small-town romcom = friends to more = he falls first = single parent = found family = a big secret = forced proximity = swoony kisses

Happy reading!

"All he wanted was for me to be brave enough to give him my heart."

This author's ability to make me laugh is unparalleled! She is the queen of writing awkward moments that are so full of heart and humor that they make you melt.

I love August and Marlow. They have the perfect mix of chemistry and tenderness. The sweet ways they took care of and appreciated each other stole my heart.

Favorite quotes:

"I'm not going to argue with the man. I'm fighting fire with fire. He thinks he can look like that, talk like that, and brush his leg against mine under the table, and I'm not going to dish it back? Oh, buddy. He thinks he can take care of me and I won't reciprocate? I'll take care of him so hard."

"I need you around me, Marlow. If you come with a mess, I'll take it. Happily."

"We've known each other for four years, Marlow. And I've loved you for every minute of those four years."

"Hellooooo. This is my favorite version of August. There's Doctor August, Fireman August, and Rolling-the-Trash-Can-to-the-Curb-in-His-Pajamas August, but Lumberjack August is the best by far - the blue jeans, the leather gloves, the muscles, the sweat."

"Do you feel that?"
"Your heart? I can feel it. I can almost hear it, love."
"It's not mine anymore. It belongs to you."

If you love swoony and sweet small town friends to lovers, this book is a must read! Fair warning: you may experience uncontrollable laughter that may or may not cause you to do a spit take with your drink (ask me how I know).

The Brief: Marlow just can’t get a break from life and tries setting goals to keep her in track. When everything goes up in smoke and August has to save the day again, what’s a girl to do?

The Debrief: Wow! Where has @ been all my life? This book is flipping pancakes fantastic! From the very first sentence I knew I’d be hooked and even read the whole page to my husband. Hilarious. Like laugh out loud. Heartfelt. Flirty. Just everything needed for a perfect escape to a swoony happily ever after.

Marlow is perfectly imperfect and her inner snark was so on pointe. And can we take a collective sigh for August? My new favorite month. 😉 Even though we don’t get his view, I thought the author did a great job letting me see who he truly was and then I promptly feel in love.

🫠hand holding
🫠fixing everything
🫠countdown
🫠driving lessons
🫠bleacher babe
🫠the library take over
🫠Somewhere in Time
🫠being sick
🫠the moms and interruptions
🫠everything August says in the last third of the book

The Rhyme: Marlowe can whip up bacon pancakes in no time flat, but her life is a hot mess. When August continues to help her out, will feelings push one of them to confess?

Highly recommend this book! Complimentary copy. My own thoughts. If you love romantic comedies with small town vibes then this is your jam! My first book and I’m so glad I have a few others of hers downloaded!

Bacon Pancakes by @elisehaynesbooks
Rumors of Cape Georgeana, book 2

I picked this song because this is how I feel when reading any Elise Haynes book. I smile, giggle, and sigh the whole time. The inner diolouge is so relatable. Her MMC’s take swoony to the next level. Their goodness and selflessness is what dreams are made of.

Marlow Brown. Weighed down by past choices and massive guilt, has been overwhelmed for quite some time. She has lost her happy spark. Barely surviving. Yet, she has the best people around her, the best parents, and the best man ever to have as a friend.

August. Oh August. Doctor, Volunteer Firefighter, and Handy Man. How does he find the energy and time? His patience was astounding. His work ethic is superb, and his gallant knight in armor persona was probably THE most swoony thing in the world. Such a heartthrob.

The only thing I wanted was for Marlow to realize what she had sooner. Realize the burden of holding it all alone. The burden of secrets. The burden of not enjoying the now and telling yourself it will be better after such and such. BUT when she does open up, when she does accept help, and when she is reminded of the beauty in the every day, IT IS GLORIOUS. And THAT was why this story made an impact. We often miss the good and feel overwhelmed. I know I do too often.

Marlow Brown’s life is messy. Aside from running a diner and having guardianship of 16 year old Brady, what time she has left is spent putting out metaphorical—and sometimes literal—fires.

August Wentworth is Marlow’s close friend. Not only is he a hot doctor, he is 100% reliable, always looking for ways to help Marlow. She assumes it’s just because he’s a nice guy and helps everyone. The discerning reader quickly realizes August’s feelings go deeper than friendship, but he also doesn’t want to overwhelm Marlow.

When the aforementioned literal fire damages Marlow and Brady’s apartment, they move into August’s guesthouse. This mild case of forced proximity has Marlow wondering if it’s time to let romance into her life.

Overall, a sweet, easy to read romance. It lightly touches on some serious subjects. No explicit content.

I do wish more time had been spent on Marlow and Brady’s relationship. Perhaps even just allusions to long conversations and/or therapy sessions near the end of the story.

Second in series. Although this could easily be read as a stand-alone, I do highly recommend the first book since it was so cute.

Thank you to the author for providing me a digital ARC!

I read Book 1 (Enemies to Lobsters) in this series towards the end of last year. I devoured it and enjoyed it sooooo much! I remember thinking, at the time, that there was no way Elise could top that one, it was that good. Well, let's just say I was in fact so very wrong.

Though, I don't think I would exactly say that Bacon Pancakes topped Enemies to Lobsters, but they are definitely both sharing the top tier; equally exceptional and beautifully written.

Okay, so first, take a look at that cover. I love it so much! On top of that, the story is so sweet and funny. I laughed so hard at times that there were tears in my eyes.

The characters are fun and well written. I absolutely loved following along for Marlow's and August's story. Speaking of August, he was the absolute best! Seriously the sweetest green flag character I've ever seen. The banter in this book was adorable and the story itself was entertaining and kept me hooked from page one.

I received an advanced review copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion and thoughts

Oh, my goodness! I loved this book so much.

Bacon Pancakes by Elise Haynes was the May pick for the Swoony Reads Society Book Club. I had been wanting to read a book by Elise for a while, so I am so glad @klas gave me the excuse to ignore my TBR and read this beauty.

I have one word to describe how I felt about this book… August! I adored him. He was so dreamy and really the perfect match for Marlow. I loved how he always showed up for Marlow and believed in her and was willing to wait for her. He was also so funny and so good with Brady. He was really the complete package, I mean he was all these things plus being an ER doctor and a total smoke show.

I adored Marlow! Haynes did a brilliant job at creating a character who was real and relatable. Marlow felt overwhelmed and inadequate and buried under bad decisions and guilt. I loved how Marlow was able to rise above this and grow throughout the story. Her character arc was so beautiful, especially the things she learned through her relationship with August and her parents.

I adored reading this book, and I will admit I already did a quick reread of the ending. It is so good.
