Unpretentious Lady Jane

Embarking on the voyage of a lifetime, will Jane’s heart find safe harbor?

Lady Jane Armstrong has a tendency to plummet into mischief and mayhem, which unfortunately brought about the demise of her engagement to Viscount Charles Sterling.
Naturally, to avoid further scandal, this also prompted a visit to Manhattan to meet her American cousins, the Winthrop family. Exiled to Newport to spend the summer with her cousins along the seaside, she’s surrounded by the suffocating wealth of American aristocracy. But Jane doesn’t care about the approval of high society. She is bound and determined to return to England and win Charles back, even if it means orchestrating chaos until her aunt and uncle send her packing. But she must admit, there’s something different about Henry.

Henry Warrington commands an empire of steel and saltwater—heir to a shipping dynasty whose vessels dominate every harbor from New York to London. With his father’s ultimatum hanging over him like a guillotine—secure a bride by summer’s end or lose everything—Henry finds himself inexplicably drawn to the wild English rose leaving destruction in her wake. However, with her knack for getting into trouble, and Jane’s aunt commissioning an obsessive, lunatic artist to paint Jane’s portrait, can he manage to keep her safe and win her hand? Or will things spiral beyond his control?

Be swept away in this sweet and clean Christian Historical Romance novel today! Romantic suspense and the opulence of the Gilded Age await!

Unpretentious Lady Jane is a refreshingly delightful read full of mischief, romance, and a just a touch of suspense. It was a quick, light read with enough substance and faith to be uplifting.

Set in the Regency-Guilded Age era, Lady Jane is banished from England due to unladylike behavior, and sent to live with her American relatives in New York. She's not thrilled to be pulled away from England and her last shot at winning back her fiancee, but what she finds in America is so much better than what she thought she wanted. Filled with hilarious hijinx and mayhem, a very swoony family friend, and an unabashed flirt of an artist who seems to be getting too close, this book was entertaining from start to finish.

Lady Jane is such a wonderful FMC. She really does try to act like a proper lady, but tends to be plagued by misfortune, which often involves a certain fluffy companion. She longs to do better and get back into the good graces of proper society in England, but finds herself scheming to cause enough trouble for her American relations to get sent packing back to England. I love that she didn't expect to fall in love with her aunt, uncle, and cousins as much as she did, nor did she anticipate how Henry, her cousin's good friend, would make her feel. Before she knows it, summer is well under way and her thoughts are moving further away from her ex-fiancee and quickly towards affection for this American man who seems to accept her for exactly who she is. Like her American family, he doesn't judge her for her past or even her current mishaps, and becomes her protector. Their romance was very sweet.

I did very much dislike the antagonist in the story, who is a womanizing artist who becomes entirely too infatuated with Jane to the point of being delusional. He was written very well, which means that you really get that "ick" factor from him, and just wish he'd move on so the romance could continue! There were some small historical inaccuracies in the story, but the author does address them in the author's notes, and they didn't negatively impact the plot or enjoyment of the story.

What I enjoyed:
👒 Humorous misfortune (🦚)
👒 Regency/Guided Age setting
👒 The lake scene! 🛶
👒 Jane's relationship with her American Family
👒 Henry as the MMC
👒 Loved to hate the villainous artist!

⚠️ Content Warning
-Stalking, obsession
-Attempted drowning

The book did have moderate faith content, with themes of learning to rely less on yourself and submit yourself and your plans to God. I really enjoyed seeing Jane's growth in this area!

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 stars.

I really enjoyed this story, and look forward to reading more books by this author!

The Gilded Age genre is not my usual one; I get lost in the titles and rules, and the snobby attitudes of the era bother me. But I decided to give this one a try because I have read after the author before, and she really delivered on this one!

It was not the usual story from this era. Yes, there were those who looked down on others and were snooty, but not Lady Jane or Henry. They are very personable and kind. They demonstrate the love of Christ and seek to honor Him in their decisions. That is especially seen in their choices concerning their spouse. They wanted someone who valued God, and that added another good layer to the story for me.

There is chaos as Jane is definitely prone to accidents, but she is learning to be more careful. We also have suspense, danger and a bad guy to make the plot even better, although those events are more toward the end.

Overall, I enjoyed the story once I got into it. I received a complimentary copy from the author and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

I loved this story of Jane, who gets sent to live with her relatives in America. It’s a totally different culture and world to her homeland of England! She wants to get back, so she can win her fiancé back. She has no idea that there was a reason all things worked the way they did-and his name is Henry. Over the summer, Henry tries to spend every minute he can with Jane. He’s falling fast, but is she going to forget about her ex and fall for him. Then, there’s the ultimatum that his father had made-“Get married by the end of this summer or else!” So, he’s glad he fell in love with Jane. This is a story that will touch every woman’s heart and most men’s, too! I highly recommend this new book from Lisa M. Prysock. I am thrilled to have been on her arc team and I was not required to give a glowing review. This review is my own. 📕♥️

Unpretentious Lady Jane is a delightful Gilded Age read with a pleasing blend of humor, suspense, romance, and faith. It follows the adventures of a spirited and trouble-prone heroine torn between reclaiming her old life and in England and navigating her new life in America. The plot progresses at a steady pace and kept me reading quickly to find out what happened next. The characters are vividly drawn and engaging. I especially appreciate the strong, uplifting faith thread. I think fans of Christian historical romance will enjoy this entertaining, inspiring read.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.

What a great story!
The story has a really strong Christian theme... really, really strong. Faith and forgiveness are emphasized.

It starts off with a really sweet, supportive group of characters, but then the drama starts. Not the angsty kind of drama, but the “something isn't right” kind.

I appreciate that the characters respect the God-given order of things. The men see to the comfort and safety of the women, and the women, though strong and capable, allow the men to treat them like the valuable treasures they are. And they all defer to their parents.

I received this book with no expectation of a positive review. I love this story of Lady Jane. It all comes down to finding your tribe. Lady Jane's mom who was an American married a statesman from England. Her parents had died within weeks of each other. Her guardian was her Aunt Lillian.

Lady Jane had a way of finding herself in scandels in England. Aunt Lillian had had enough. She was sending her to America to live with her aunt and uncle on her mother's side. Lady Jane found a new family and community that she never dreamed. This is a wonderful story of starting over and finding where you actually belong.

What happens when Jane is raised by a strict, spinster aunt and mayhem and mischief follow her? Eventually you get shipped to America to “visit” an aunt you’ve never met. Part of this story is about Jane learning to stop thinking she knows best and allowing God to lead. There she discovers an extended family that loves her for who she is.
“ .. the very fact He had allowed her to be brought to … America might be a huge sign she had missed.” She finds all kinds of new people and experiences. With a little less mayhem and mischief, she can be her real self as she learns what family life is and what an unhealthy obsessive person can do. But can she find a lifetime love?

Lady Jane has a huge tendency to get herself into mischief. Because of that, her aunt, who is her guardian, decides to send her to live with relatives in America. Lady Jane decided to cause more mischief so the American relatives would send her back to England so she could win her former fiance back. But, things didn't work like she planned. This book is really entertaining and I enjoyed it immensely. Ms Prysock is so good at giving details so you feel you are right there. I highly recommend it.
I was given a copy of the book by the author, but this review is my own opinion.

This book was a fun to read because of Lady Jane's character. She really tries hard to be good and fit into what Society demands, but she's just too outspoken. Sent to America in disgrace, she finds her cousins are kind and accepting of her. As she gets closer to Harry, she realizes that God had a better plan than she does. Along with this message of faith, this book has romance, mystery and humor. I recommend this book as a pleasant, clean read. Thank you to the author for sharing an early copy with her faithful readers. The opinions are my own.

This story will evoke emotions long buried, feelings long sequestered and hope long buried as you walk alongside Lady Jane who experiences love lost, a world turned upside down, English to American culture and pretty much anything, or should I say, everything, a prim and proper (with a penchant for mishaps) young lady could undergo. A fun, entertaining, inspiring work, always directing the reader to life’s answer, God, the creator of all mankind!

A faith based romance which is a must read. Lady Jane gets into some trouble and her fiancé dumps her. Her guardian decides to ship her to relatives in America to hide her "shame". Her goal is to reconcile with her ex-fiancé until she meets Henry. The story is sprinkled with examples of how Jane and Henry rely on their faith to guide them in their new relationship which includes a "stalker" who becomes obsessed with Lady Jane. An enjoyable read and a delightful story.

Unpretentious Lady Jane was a delightful story to read. Lady Jane always seems to find trouble or trouble finds her. When she is sent to live with her American family, she trys to figure out what to do to get her sent back to England. Only time will tell if that's what she really wants after meeting Henry, it's like God is answering both of their prayers for true love.

This book is very entertaining. The heroine is a hot mess but an extremely loveable character. She's always causing some type of mishap unwittingly. Sent to America for a new beginning. Maybe Lady Jane can get herself together and overcome her past. I enjoyed reading and look forward to reading more.
