I really enjoyed Soul Searching and was so excited for Clarke’s story. I adored Collins, but Clarke definitely has a special place in my heart. My god, I related to her so hard as a character and just wanted to give her a hug.
I do wish we’d gotten more of the twins together. I felt like Collins came back very late into the story, and some of my favourite parts were when the two of them were together.
The plot was rather basic but I’ve found that both of these books are much more character-driven than plot-driven, which I don't mind to be honest. I love Collins and Clarke enough that it worked for the series.
I absolutely adored the MMC, Leith. He had such strong golden retriever energy, the twins definitely have something in common there, and he was perfect for Clarke. I also loved how their history was intertwined throughout the story rather than relying on flashbacks to show us their past. I’m not always the biggest fan of friends-to-lovers, but this worked very well.
My only gripe would be that the story felt a little unfinished, particularly Leith’s storyline with his father. I also wish the epilogue had focused more on the twins, who were really the heart of this duet.
But otherwise, another solid series from Lyla Sage.

I am truly so surprised by how much I loved this. Being completely honest, Soul Searching was a big miss for me so I was anxious to try the second book. I am so glad I did 😭 Clarke is truly a soul character for me like that’s my girl. I could relate so deeply to her that I really think she is what made the book for me. She’s my favorite type of fmc: a little prickly, independent, people pleaser. Aka me. I also really adored Leith. Golden retriever mmc perfection who yearned!! Who was down BAD!! Their history and tension were so good. The fake dating trope (one of my faves) was also super fun and added a lot to the story. I loved the small town setting and seeing all the characters and locations again. I also REALLY loved how the ghosts played such an important role in this book. I felt like that was missing from Soul Searching but was definitely made up for in this one. I just really loved every page of this book. Clarke was absolutely the highlight of the book for me and her character growth and acceptance by the end was so good. I loved the romance too of course, the side characters, and the fake dating plot. I also think this is Lyla’s writing at its best. SUCH a surprise hit 😭🩷 thank you so much to the publisher for the arc

the characters have no chemistry, no depth, nothing except for the very big feelings that are tied to their specific storyline
The dialogue feels forced and doesn’t flow
There is nothing in this book that a real person would say out loud
Lyla I’m so sorry but babes I think you need to take a breather — every book there seems to be an authors note talking about how writing this was a struggle…well I fear it’s very evident

Free Falling is the second and final instalment in the Sweetwater Peak duet by author Lyla Sage. I was so excited to get my hands on this book as soon as possible after the small insight into Clarke’s character throughout Soul Searching piqued my interest and determination to know more about her life. This book was exactly the type of story that I needed in the moment and I’m a firm believer that some books are meant to find you at the right time. I became invested into the story of our two main characters with ease and found myself unwilling to put the book down until reaching its conclusion within one sitting. Something I always credit Sage for is knowing how to create complex and compelling characters that you want to root for which is something that I believe was executed to perfection throughout Free Falling. I love the sense of community that has been established within Sweetwater Peak amongst both the living and the deceased, and the way that the existence of these characters always seems to come full circle. I really enjoyed the paranormal elements in the way that it seamlessly intertwines with present events whilst also acting as a window into the rich history and lore of this spooky small town. The paranormal aspect did feel more understated in comparison to book one, however this makes sense to me due to the opposing experience that both sisters have with their gift. The exploration of depression was handled with the upmost care and I cannot express just how deeply this resonated with me. I really appreciate the way that it became a focus of Clarke’s journey and my ability to connect to her on a more emotional level as a result. Free Falling is a beautiful conclusion to an emotional and character-driven duet that I know I will be returning to reread time and again in the very near future… because home is not always just a place.
Clarke Cartwright is a wonderfully complex character that I have loved getting more insight into throughout her own point-of-view. I found it really easy to feel connected to Clarke throughout her exploration as she undertakes a deeper realisation and recognition of herself and the life that she greatly desires to experience. Underneath a tough exterior is a soft and gentle woman who yearns to find a lifelong partner that will not only share the heavy weight of her burdens, but also somebody who can see her more than anybody else has; a whole person outside of her sister and her identity as a twin who is allowed to make mistakes of her own, and be forgiven for them. A partner that is a safe place to land during times of struggle that she can trust to catch her when she falls. The depiction of Clarke’s depression greatly resonated with me on a vulnerable level in the way that it is represented and explored. This isn’t something that you just wake up on a random morning in recognition of. It’s a plethora of different things that sneak up on you and consumes your entire being. The inclusion of burnout, fatigue and stress were all huge indicators to me that I recognised from within myself and it really means a lot to see a character being explored so vulnerably… and yet, still deserving of being loved fully and loudly. The majority of my kindle highlights are of Clarke’s dialogue and I just know that I’ll find myself revisiting them again and again in the way they made me feel seen and understood. Her complex relationship with her mother and the strain that their mutual involvement in the family business acts as a division felt wholly realistic and well executed, albeit slightly resolved a little more swiftly than I had been anticipating. Clarke is a woman that loves wholly without restraint for the small number of people that she allows into every aspect of her life, and it made me thrilled to see her learn how to open herself up to more people who prove that they want care for her. Seeing her combat her fear of the paranormal and the acceptance that they’re just as much a part of her as she is to them felt significant, and in the end I couldn’t be happier for the send-off that we leave Clarke with.
One thing you can rely on throughout this duology (ans Lyla in general) are green flag men with Leith Wilkes being another shining example of this. Leith is a kind, funny and hardworking man that values his family and community above all else. There is no level that is too deep to steep to in protection of his family and his legacy, and I had nothing but respect for his ability to adapt and overcome all of the struggles that came his way. His reputation as Sweetwater Peak’s ‘golden boy’ made him the perfect contrast to the woman that he had quietly yearned for from afar since his teenage years. I laughed to myself on several occasions throughout Leith’s dialogue that showed on the inside he’s still that young boy that attempts to rile up his crush just so that she will recognise his existence. The stability and silent strength that he presents himself with is one of the many attributes that makes him to perfect partner for Clarke in his refusal to let her go through her struggles alone... even when his entire perception on reality is challenged. I adored Leith’s gentleness and the way that he made communication a priority whilst also respecting boundaries whenever Clarke struggles to voice her feelings. His patient and calm demeanour was a great attribute to his role throughout the story, and most of all I loved getting to witness Leith’s close relationship with his teenage niece that he is one of the primary caretakers of. His role as an uncle, stand-in father and a friend to Lainey felt beautifully explored with intent and I adore getting to witness a family that loves one another without condition. I’m truly thrilled with the conclusion to Leith’s story and the way that he has managed to achieve that life that he dreamed of after thinking it to be impossible. A life where he gets to live for himself outside of the shadow and expectations of his deceased father… whilst also honouring his family legacy and the needs of his community.
Free Falling was a fast-paced and endearing follow-up to Soul Searching that I greatly enjoyed from beginning-to-end. The implementing of a fake dating dynamic made for a fun and irresistible read that I will eat up every single time. I was thrilled to see even more wonderful Rebel Blue Ranch cameos throughout this one and I selfishly hope that this isn’t the last time we’re get to see these characters that I have loved and connected with over the years. I’m sad to be saying goodbye to the heartwarming residents of Sweetwater Peak, however I look forward to see where author Lyla Sage will take us next in her upcoming endeavours.

I am SO surprised by how much I loved this book 😭❤️
The first book in the series, Soul Searching, was a bit of a miss for me, but Free Falling had me hooked from the very beginning. I instantly fell in love with these characters and genuinely didn’t want to put it down!
Clarke was absolutely the highlight of this book for me. She is truly a soul character, and I related to her SO deeply. She’s exactly my favourite type of FMC — a little prickly, fiercely independent, and a total people pleaser underneath it all. Watching her character growth was just so good. And Leith?? Golden retriever MMC perfection. The yearning. Their history, chemistry, and tension were everything, and I loved watching their relationship develop.
The fake dating trope (one of my absolute favourites!) added another layer to the story that I really enjoyed. I also loved being back in the small-town setting and I loved the role the ghosts played in this book. They felt so important to the story and added such a unique element.

Clarke Cartwright has a lot on her plate: Running her family's antique shop after it almost got taken over by corporate slop, fixing her family's antique shop, keeping everyone in town happy, and remaining the civil and easygoing Cartwright girl.
Leith Wilkes has taken over his family farm after his father's death almost five years ago. While his relationship with his father was rocky, Leith is glad that his farm is able to provide so much for the economy despite it not being the path he would've chosen for himself. When Clarke randomly approaches him and tells him he needs to check the will, Leith realizes that his lawyer- and conveniently the town's only lawyer still hasn't gotten back to him about that. The two decide to sneak into his office and look at the papers themselves, only to realize there was a secret clause: If Leith isn't married within five years of his father's death, the farm goes to the next relative waiting in line.
When the doorknob of the office door shakes, Leith and Clarke share a steamy kiss to hide their breaking and entering. The rumor mill spreads fast in Sweetwater Peak, and soon the two decide to fake date: Leith will get closer to keeping his farm, and in exchange he'll help Clarke fix her shop.
I enjoyed this a lot! I really like Lyla Sage, so I knew this book would be lots of fun. The slight paranormal element is always enjoyable, but at the same time, like the first book, sometimes the ghosty parts felt a little out of place. It didn't quite flow.
I love a childhood crush story, and Leith and Clarke were PERFECT! I wish we got more of a glimpse into those young moments because I would've enjoyed it even more. They are GOOD together. There's no third-act breakup (sorry if you think that's a spoiler!), and these two get along immediately. It was almost so good that it just didn't make sense to have a fake dating plot when they could've just been actually dating. In the beginning, it almost seems like Clarke was annoyed by his presence, but that fizzled out fast to the point where I just forgot about it. As for their chemistry, MY GOD. LEITH?!?!!? This man BEGS for her.

This was unfortunately not a hit for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lyla Sage’s characters, settings, writing, and storylines, but the romance was a tad lackluster in my opinion. You have Clarke who can see ghosts, and Leith who needs to get married to save his family farm. They’re not really *friends* per se, but they’ve known each other for years and years and had crushes on each other in school. So when they start up this fake dating scheme, I thought there would be MORE. Instead, they went from “I’ll help you out” to “we’re totally into each other but neither of us will say it so this fake dating will transition to real dating without communication” and it just felt rushed and odd to me. Maybe it was a lack of secondary characters, because I loved when Leith’s cousin Lainey would show up and when we got Collins back in town, plus the Cam cameo was super fun. Maybe it was the underdeveloped emotional side of things? Everything felt like it almost hit the line of ‘oh, this could go somewhere good’ and then never went anywhere, almost like certain plot points were forgotten about. I wanted to feel more connected to the characters, but that’s hard when almost everything gets cut off before it has time to develop.

I will read absolutely anything by Lyla Sage, it’s a guaranteed good time.
I enjoyed this small town romance vibe with a twist, it’s the 2nd book in this interconnected series that has a supernatural undertone.
This story follows an FMC struggling with a fear of her identity and some other struggles rear their head. Our MMC comes into the picture as the resident golden boy, charming and family orientated plus a hottie. There’s definitely some fantastic tension and natural banter between the two characters that develops throughout the book, but at the core is a friendship that sets the foundation of anything else. Our MMC is in a battle for his inheritance and that’s where Clarke comes in prompted by the MMC’s fathers ghost, yes you read that correctly. This makes for a unique, spicy and engaging read.

Ooooh I think this is my fave from Lyla Sage yet!!! There’s something about this small town friends to lovers x fake dating and Clarke/Leith that just worked. Seriously, chefs kiss!
I instantly gravitated to these characters and loved seeing this second chance happen for them. This one vibed with me much more than Collins story (the previous book in this series), and I think that’s because I saw a lot of myself in Clarke that I empathized with. And Leith, he’s definitely golden boy / golden retriever vibes and the way he took care of Clarke and his family.. swoon!!

Lyla’s writing has always like a safe place to land, but Sweetwater peak felt like coming home. Clarke resonated with me on a level I could never have expected. This book injects a spooky fun ghosty edge into a story that at its core is about finding yourself when you didn’t realize you were lost. Lyla’s way of writing about depression and burnout truly had me in shambles.
Leith and Clarke were awkward, adorable, and so much fun. Leith was everything I wanted for Clarke and then some - a loyal, down bad man who will do anything for those he loves. The dichotomy of their personalities was perfection.

Rather than making grief the loud, all-consuming focus of the story, Sage incorporates it subtly and realistically, allowing it to exist in the background of the characters’ lives in much the same way it often does in reality. I don’t think I have ever read a character who feels so remarkably similar to my own inner thoughts and feelings. Clarke’s fears, her constant need for connection, her desire not to be overbearing, and her deep-seated need to be liked all felt incredibly familiar to me. She is constantly surrounded by people and constantly giving to others, but when she is alone, everything she has been holding together begins to crumble. Her loneliness and struggles with self-worth felt painfully real, and I felt them to my bones.
Sage’s weakness, however, is in how neatly everything comes together. By the end, nearly every strained relationship is repaired and every conflict receives a happy resolution. Sisterly estrangement, neglected friendships, parental miscommunication, and years of resentment are all wrapped up into a very tidy bow. While I understand the appeal of a happy ending, some of these resolutions felt too convenient given the depth of the problems that had been established.
I also felt that Collin’s arrival back in town was an unnecessary part of the plot. It seemed included primarily to give readers more time with characters from the previous book, when much of that information could have been handled through a phone call. Boone’s appearance, which amounted to only a handful of pages, also felt unnecessary and did not add enough to the story to justify his inclusion.
That said, I really appreciated what Sage didn't do. There was no third-act breakup, no angry ex-girlfriend or other woman brought in to manufacture conflict, and no frustrating miscommunication driving the couple apart. Instead, Leith and Clarke are given the opportunity to actually communicate and work through their feelings. In a genre that so often relies on manufactured drama, I found that incredibly refreshing.

Lyla Sage is 100% an auto-read (and buy) author for me, and I was so excited to see what would be happening in the second installment in her Sweetwater Peak series! This book did not disappoint at all!
I love going back to a series where we get to see the same town and people (for the most part) that we have seen through the eyes of someone else, and I loved reading Clarke (FMC) and Leith's (MMC) POVs.
I am so glad that we were able to get some more closure on a ghostly romance from book 1 because that was a loose end that I was hoping would be tied up a little bit. Clarke has the special ability of seeing and hearing ghosts (and of course she can talk to them - if she decides to acknowledge them!), an ability that she shares with her sister Collins.
Leith is the current owner of his family's farm and it may all be changing underneath him if he doesn't see his father's Will to see any stipulations that were put into place....the only problem is that the town lawyer is dragging his feet.
I love seeing Clarke and Leith work together to help save his family's farm and watch the romance fully blossom between the two!
This book has some of my *favorite* microtropes and I absolutely loved these two!

I really enjoyed the fake dating setup between Clarke and Leith, especially with all the secrets and history surrounding them. The haunted elements added a unique layer to the story and I liked seeing Clarke embrace her abilities over the course of the book. Her chemistry and banter with Leith kept me invested and the whole story had that charming small town vibe that worked so well. It was a little bit like if Gilmore Girls also had ghosts. This was a sweet and steamy romance with meaningful emotional moments and a whole cast of characters to root for.

Absolutely loved this one! Free Falling has my favourite trope; fake dating. It kept me hooked and aligned with the story so well. I was hooked from the first page and flew through this one. I love the ghosts, the small town vibe and the characters. If you loved Soul Searching, you’ll love this one too!

Oooooh this was fun and I liked this one so much more than the first book. I’m always down for a fake dating trope and I thought Leith and Clarke made such a sweet couple. I loved their banter and their chemistry! I also loved the paranormal element but I do wish we got a bit more of the ghosts.

I really enjoyed getting to know Clarke better in this book. We got little bits of her in Soul Searching, but since it was her sister’s story, we didn’t get all that much. I appreciated seeing an opposite approach to their paranormal gifts and how said approach affected Clarke in her everyday life. That said, one thing I’ve liked a lot about the Sweetwater Peak duology is the presence of ghosts and paranormal activities without them completely taking over or hogging the story. They’re just another part of life for the Cartwright girls and readers get to experience them, too.
The haunted town mixed with the complicated family dynamics, the save the farm mission, and the “Uh-oh, I’m falling for my fake boyfriend” arc make for a memorable adventure! Oh! And I can’t forget the joy of the Rebel Blue Ranch cameos! 😍

“maybe this was all i needed: leith and my lucky stars.”
clarke and leith are everything to me. this book was emotional, silly, sexy, and so many other things in between. clarke is one of my favourite lyla characters because i related to her in such a bone-deep way. i loved her to pieces and i know leith did too, so i hope he can share. him and clarke were the perfect couple pairing, and i can’t get over how sweet he was (but also his mouth? i need him immediately).
i was giggling through the majority of this book and i really didn’t want it to end. the ghost side characters, lainey, collins, and the rebel blue cameos, they all had me hooked. i am so excited for what’s next in the lylaverse!

Blending the supernatural sensitivities of the main character Clarke, while she grapples with her own struggling mental health as pressures mount around her, Sage weaves a romantic, touching love story with Clarke’s childhood friend/crush Leith. Leith is facing troubles of his own, due to the odd inheritance clause in his father’s will to take full ownership of his family’s farm, leading him to come to an agreement with Clarke: they will pose as a couple to the town so he can inherit, and in return he will help her with some odds and ends around her family business.
A truly touching story about how we can’t isolate ourselves and do everything on our own, but instead, we need our families and friends behind us, supporting us. There were also some fantastic tie-ins to Sage’s other series, Rebel Blue Ranch, so fans will have a blast reading this. It was a perfect segue into my fall reading with its atmospheric, moody setting and ghostly elements. I am never disappointed by Lyla Sage!

After loving soul searching and everything else Lyla writes I was going in with quite high expectations. It feels weird going from raving reviews to this, I feel bad!
Free falling just felt so bland to me.
I didn’t really feel much for Leith and Clarke together, if anything this was simply Clarke’s journey to find herself again and I did like that.
I was sad of the lack of paranormal but I understand that’s just a part of her story.

Clarke is one of the most relatable and well rounded characters that I have read. She has so much pressure on her shoulders to figure out the store and to protect the town. Leith and Clarke were made for each other. Every step of the way you were rooting for them and there happily ever after. Halloween spooky vibes that will make you fall in love with the season!!

I was passed an ARC so it’s possible these elements will be in the final release. I’ll definitely read the released version and update my review accordingly. I really like Lyla’s storytelling. My comments are of the your-mileage-may-vary variety. If they were in the text I would probably see it as a 5 star read like Swift & Saddled was for me.
I preferred Clarke to Collins as an FMC between Soul Searching and Free Falling. Excellent job. I do feel like I was searching for three story elements that just aren’t explained in the text.
I would have preferred that Lainey was established as a snoop and that she loved the farm. It was almost there but it’s something I’m backfilling in my own brain.
I would have preferred when Leith is confessing to Clarke about his last conversation with his father that he stated it was on Flynn’s birthday. It would have given the reader a bigger payoff later and established a more clear reason for the fight with his dad and his dad’s motives at the time.
I also would have preferred a stated portion of the resolution to include Clarke offering to look/talk to/mediate between Leith and his father’s ghost. Big awww moment for both Clarke’s relationship with her abilities and her empathy/care for Leith.

Thank you again to Edelweiss for spoiling me with these amazing ARCs. I devoured this book; Lyla’s writing is just so easy to get pulled into. This series feels quieter to me than the Rebel Blue series but I really think that fits the vibe of the town and the characters. There is such a fun mishmash of people in Sweetwater Peak.
I felt like this book didn’t hit quite as hard as some of her other ones though. It was one of those books where stuff clearly happened because I read 300 pages but it somehow didn’t feel like there was a lot of plot? I’m not sure how to better describe it. I would have liked to see more of Leith and Clarke when they were kids; I think it would have rounded out their characters a bit more.
But once again, I will talk about this book to anyone who will listen to me 🤪

Review:
Book two in the Sweetwater Peak series features the sister of the FMC from book one, and her childhood/high school crush. If you have not read the first book, Soul Searching, I highly recommend that you start there first since there are so many carry over characters and storylines.
Our MMC in this book has learned that he cannot inherit his father’s land unless he is married and he knows exactly who he wants to be his “fake” wife. Clarke agrees because she has always had a crush on Leith since high school and truly wants to help him gain control of his family farm.
This is a slow burn, but I love how sweet the couple are with each other. He blushes!! 🥰
I also love how the author wrote the FMC, she struggles with her abilities, sometimes causing herself physical pain. It’s not often you see a book where the MMC can’t immediately come to the rescue when the FMC is struggling, this author knows it will take time and therapy to help Clarke.
