Don't miss the BRAND NEW instalment in the brilliant, BESTSELLING Armstrong and Oscar Cozy Mystery series by T.A. Williams. A gripping murder mystery set in beautiful Florence featuring a retired DCI and his loyal companion, Oscar.
Even angels can have a dark side...
As the sticky heat of August settles over Florence, Dan Armstrong is ready for a well-earned break—sightseeing with fiancée Anna, daughter Tricia and her fiancé Shaun. But when a British man is found dead inside the city's magnificent Duomo, Dan's plans quickly change.
The victim, Tristan Angel, is a super-wealthy arms dealer with a saintly name and a devilish reputation. But what was he doing in the cathedral, and who decided to make it his final confession?
At Angel's opulent villa in the hills of Fiesole, Dan and Commissario Virgilio encounter a colourful cast of suspects—each one hiding secrets and none too eager to talk. As tempers rise and the heat outside grows ever more intense, Dan and his four-legged sidekick, Oscar, must sniff out the truth before the killer strikes again.
The writing was detailed and engaging. I loved all the little details of the characters' surroundings and the food that they ate. It added an extra something to an intriguing mystery. As always there were lots of different possibilities as to what the answer could be. I didn't see the ending coming!
The chapters were fairly long which meant that you got a good chunk of the story before moving on. Each chapter was labelled with the day. This grounded the story well and meant that you got a good idea of how the story was progressing.
There was an interesting flow to the book. Whilst we went smoothly from one chapter to the next, we did keep going back and revisiting options. We gradually kept adding to each option as we went on. This technique certainly kept me guessing right to the end!
Whilst there were a fair few options as to what the answer was, each possibility was clearly laid out and well presented. I was therefore able to keep up with everything that went on.
There was a good pace to the book. Whilst the different possibilities slowed the story down, it was cleverly done to keep your attention and to get you to the end of the book in good time.
The characters were excellent. The main characters were the same as in previous books and whilst I know some bits of information from them, it was quite easy to read this book as a standalone. I particularly like the canine companion and his role in solving this particular mystery.
The rest of the surrounding characters were all suspicious and all of them could have been the murderer, which made it interesting. Little things kept emerging throughout the story which made me change my mind as to who the murderer was a number of times.
Lastly the settings. They were wonderfully described and you could easily imagine being in Florence. I also loved all the descriptions of the food. It added an extra something to the story.
The Armstrong & Oscar series is a reliable cozy mystery.
I enjoy that the series is set in Italy, what a great backdrop, makes the images in my head that much more beautiful when Armstrong takes Oscar for walks!
The character development is always solid, this book has a villa full of suspects this time. You have two directors of TXA Supplies dead, one at the duomo and the other at the villa. Who amongst their team of staff and lawyers would want them dead or was it a client?
The author does a good job casting suspicion and doubts across several people, keeping you guessing until the end.
And the finale was a wonderful way to end the book, especially in February and so close to Valentine’s Day!
The fourteenth book in the Armstrong and Oscar cozy mystery series featuring retired DCI and now PI and crime writer Dan Armstrong and his Labrador Oscar. Set in Florence, billionaire arms dealer Tristan Angel is found murdered in a confessional in the famous Duomo. As the victim was British, Dan is called in to help the investigation.
Another gripping installment in the series. Usually the Italian setting is a main focus however, in this novel the police procedural was more dominant. The mystery element kept me guessing as Dan and Virgilio tired to work out whether the murder was linked to Tristan’s personal or professional life- he certainly made plenty of enemies in both areas. I enjoyed seeing the storyline play out, the connections to different organized crime groups and Oscar finding evidence that broke the case. It was nice to see Dan interact with his daughter and I enjoyed that both of them had weddings to plan and their different roles in that! An interesting and slightly different installment to the series.
