This book had me HOOKED from the start!! So much so that I finished it in under 48 hours which NEVER HAPPENS for me!! I am typically a 5-7 business days kinda reading girlie but I could NOT GET ENOUGH of Rocío and Xavier!
Shelly’s writing had me enamored from the beginning. I was transported to Miami: I could smell the coffee, hear the waves and feel the rhythm of the music as I flipped through the pages of this book. When Shelly says she writes stories with sazón she is not exaggerating!! The way she wove her culture into the pages of this book was mesmerizing. The food. The language. The traditions. The family dynamics. Every piece of Rocío and Xavier’s story was carefully wrapped in the most beautiful layers of cultura.
This book has it all. It’s a fast burn roller coaster of emotions that had me literally yelling into Shelly’s DMs 🤣. I was not prepared for all the emotions I felt as I read this book but that goes to show how much this story affected me.
Short blurb: As Rocío begins to move on after a nasty divorce she tells herself she’s ready for some physical fun but nothing more. She is not ready to be catching feeling for nobody. After Xavier approaches her at the bar, Rocío feels ready to take the plunge and indulge herself in a one night stand. And that’s that….or so she thinks. A few weeks later she’s at a concert and discovers that her one night stand wasn’t just with any ol’ Miami guy… no, her ONS was with FLACO EL CASANOVA aka a reggaeton superstar. And as much as Rocío tries to fight it the chemistry with Xavier is simply too potent to ignore. What starts as a physical attraction soon builds into more but not without some serious surprises along the way!!
Thank you to Shelly and Next Step PR for the opportunity to read Staying for La Lluvia prior to its release. I feel so lucky and so grateful for not only the eARC but the beautiful PR package Shelly sent me as well.
P.S My life motto is: “el perreo sana” and I’d like to think that perreando with Xavier in her Doc Martens helped Rocío heal a little bit too. I am so excited to see what’s next in the Ficha Universe. And whats a girl gotta do to get a couple bonus chapters with Alondra and Adrian’s story??!!!! 🙏🏻 😜
I’ve absolutely loved diving into the Ficha Mundial universe. First with Rio in Wishing for La Luna by J.L. Lora, and now with Shelly Cruz’s Staying for La Lluvia. Each story pulls me deeper into this world, but Xavier and Rocio’s journey truly stole my heart.
From the very start, I fell for Xavier. His confidence, persistence, and unwavering devotion to Rocio “Rocky” were impossible to resist. He was completely gone for her and unapologetic about it, age difference and all. I especially loved how he constantly reassured her that it was “tú y yo, nobody else.” After the disaster of her previous marriage, Rocio needed that kind of steady, unshakable love.
But what made their relationship even more compelling was that the support went both ways. Rocky stood firmly by Xavier’s side, particularly when she learned about his past struggles with drugs and the regrets tied to his addiction. Her compassion and loyalty added so much depth to their romance, showing that their connection wasn’t just passionate, it was rooted in understanding and growth.
I also really enjoyed the friendship arc between Rocky and her friends, Nikki and Alondra. Their bond brought warmth and balance to the story, adding layers beyond the central romance.
And let’s talk about the spice, because wow. The chemistry between Xavier and Rocky was off the charts. The steamy scenes were so well written and intense that I found myself fanning my face more than once.
Overall, Staying for La Lluvia delivered heartfelt emotion, powerful romance, and unforgettable heat. I can’t wait to see what’s next in the Ficha Mundial world.
Back in Ficha Mundial Latin Entertainment! In Staying for La Lluvia you meet Rocky, a career driven lawyer who has just finalized her divorce. She goes out to celebrate with her friends and ends up meeting Xavier and having a one night stand. Little did she know that he’s actually a reggaeton artist. This book brought the drama and not like annoying bad drama but more like entertaining drama. Xavier is smooth and such a sweet talker! He definitely has game. I found Rocky to be really relatable and can understand why she feels and thinks the way she does. I really love Rocky’s friends especially Nikki.
🎤Age gap 💚Latine Leads 🎤 Spanglish 💚He falls first 🎤Reggaeton Romance
This was such a cute story. I totally related with both characters so much coming back as a person who overcame being divorced and now in my forties I can see how it was hard for rocky to open up and be vulnerable and I like that about it. It was very relatable even thou ill never date a famous person (I don’t know any lol)
This story was phenomenal and had me feeling all the emotions. I loved the Latine representation and how Shelly highlighted both Puerto Rican and Argentinian culture. Her writing made me feeling like I was right there in Miami and low-key had me wanting to move there, lol.
The side characters added depth to the story and helped move things along. I saw a lot of myself in Rocío, the badass FMC, which had me rooting for her, and I loved everything about Xavier.
“A breakfast date. Damn, that’s how we know we getting old.”
One of my favorite genres is rockstar romance, and reading one centered in Latin culture with reggaetoneros was everything I didn't know I needed.
I had a lot of fun with the story. I didn't only enjoy the relationship between Xavier and Rocío, but I also enjoyed the bond between Rocío and her friends. The way they had each other's back but they would also call each other out when needed felt so relatable to me.
This story covers so many different circumstances and struggles, including Rocío's divorce because her husband cheated on her, and then her finding out just who that woman was. We also have Xavier's battle with addiction, and I really appreciated how the author portrayed this as an ongoing thing, because something that I feel like a lot of people are not aware of is that when you're an addict, you will continue to battle with addiction throughout the rest of your life, even if you're a recovered addict.
Quote: “I don’t know him, but he let you get away, so I already know we’re different. ¡Porque yo protejo lo mío con toda mi alma, y tú eres mía!”
Leave it to Cruz to envelope you in culture and passion and finding the rhythm in starting anew.
I can’t get over her exceptional writing. I always feel like I’m walking into her characters’ worlds. You can feel the vibrations of the city life and music of Miami surrounding Rocío and Xavier.
There is so much anticipation throughout this novel and I was constantly excited for what was to come, devastated by trials, hopeful for understanding between characters.
I was absolutely energized by all the supporting characters providing laughs and support to the MCs.
Follow the sexy and relatable Rocío and enjoy her powerhouse way of managing her work and personal life. She is so inspiring and I felt empowered just reading her story and how she tackles things many of us face!
Dios mioooooo Xavier y Rocío y toda esa calentura 🥵
The chemistry, the raw passion these two have for each-other is just wow. Had me squirming, blushing and showing my fiancé a couple of my favorite parts. Side note, Rocio’s mom triggered me so much! (Ya’ll have to read and see why). Pero el Flaco la tiene okay! 🤤
Staying for la Lluvia had me staying up way past my bedtime—I simply could not put it down. I absolutely loved the representation of a mature Latina woman taking center stage. Rocío has officially become one of my top MFCs. She’s a divorced lawyer navigating her newfound single life, rediscovering herself and her desires. Then enters Xavier—a young reggaetonero who brings all the spice, passion, and undeniable chemistry. Their dynamic is electric, and the story delivers on romance, growth, and heat. Staying for la Lluvia had everything I wanted and more. Highly recommend! 🔥
Staying for La Lluvia completely stole my heart. If I could give this more than five stars, I would.
This is my first book by Shelly Cruz, and it absolutely will not be my last. Currently, devouring another one of hers as we speak. This book is also part of the Ficha Mundial universe, which I love as a concept. Each installment takes place in the same world but is written by a different author, which means every book introduces you to a new voice while still expanding the same vibrant universe.
This story follows Rocío (“Rocky”), a 41-year-old lawyer rebuilding her life after a devastating divorce, and Xavier, a younger reggaeton superstar whose confidence and intensity shake her world in the best way.
Some of the tropes you can expect: • Reverse age gap • He falls first • Failed one-night stand • Dual POV • Famous musician × lawyer • Trauma, healing, and emotional growth • Spicy, confident chemistry
From the very first chapter, I was hooked.
As someone born and raised in Miami, this book felt like coming home. Shelly Cruz captured the city so vividly that I could picture every location from Rocky’s beachside apartment to the courthouse to the Rickenbacker Bridge. The references to Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Las Olas, cafecito, Latin music, and everyday cultural moments made the setting feel alive.
But what really made this book shine was the cultural authenticity.
The seamless blend of English and Spanish, the Spanglish dialogue, the food, the family dynamics, the music references, it all felt so real. As a proud Latina, I felt deeply seen in these pages. The atmosphere was vibrant, warm, emotional, and unmistakably rooted in Hispanic culture.
And the romance? Absolutely electric.
Rocky and Xavier’s chemistry jumps off the page from the moment they meet. Their connection is magnetic — equal parts passion, tension, vulnerability, and healing. Xavier especially stole the show for me. His pursuit of Rocky was swoon-worthy in every sense: patient, intentional, confident, and deeply caring.
He doesn’t just chase her physically, he shows her she’s worthy of being seen, valued, and loved again.
Watching these two navigate their emotional baggage while building something real together was incredibly satisfying. Rocky’s strength and independence paired beautifully with Xavier’s passion and devotion.
And yes..the spice? Delicious.
But beyond the heat, this story is really about second chances, healing after betrayal, and finding love when you least expect it.
This book made me laugh, hot and bothered, highlight like crazy, and feel incredibly nostalgic for Miami all at the same time.
If you love: • Latin-inspired romance • Spanglish dialogue and cultural immersion • confident heroines • swoony, devoted heroes • music-driven atmospheres • and emotionally layered love stories
then you absolutely need to pick this one up.
Xavier is officially book Papi (boyfriend) status, and Staying for La Lluvia is a must-read.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Thanks to Shelly Cruz for the e-ARC for Staying for La Lluvia in exchange of an honest review.
This one is hard for me to review because while I REALLY enjoyed the beginning of this story, and I was SHOCKED and truly entertained with the 3rd act conflict (oh I know, me liking a "third act break up?, wow! I guess it was really juicy. Telenovela vibes were great) The middle of the book I really struggled with. It seemed like nothing was really happening yet a lot was going on. I think the book could've been edited better, and that would've helped the pace. The spice also it worked for me in the beginning but then it just became too much. I wanted more of them as a couple, truly knowing each other and working their way through managing a relationship after heartbreak and in the public eye. I do got to say I appreciate the honesty of the characters when talking about therapy, drug abuse and the hardships of loving after being heart broken. Those moments were a highlight for me. The ending was good, and despite my issues with the pacing and editing, I do see myself picking up more books from Shelly because it was really fun.
She’s 41, freshly divorced, and done playing nice. He’s a reggaeton superstar in recovery who can’t forget the one woman who didn’t care about his fame. What was supposed to be one no-strings Miami night? Yeah… that turned into everything.
Age gap. Failed one-night stand. Second chance energy. Healing after betrayal.
Latinx romance with music, heat, and soul. Rocío is reclaiming her power. Xavier is fighting old demons. And the chemistry? Absolutely disrespectful. This one is sexy, grown, and full of heart. We love a woman choosing herself and still getting the man
Back to Ficha Mundial Universe! My two loves collided again, reggaeton and romance, so perfectly intertwined with drama, plot twist, and an age gap where she's the oldest.
I think my favorite part was the GROWN characters, with that came more emotional maturity and straight to the point talk (and spice).
Xavier and Rocky are for sure top tier Latino romantical couple for me.
ARC Review: Staying for La Lluvia Written by Shelly Cruz ARC provided by the Author
Shelly Cruz really looked at my emotions, my blood pressure, and my sleep schedule and said bet. Because Staying for La Lluvia is equal parts sensual awakening, emotional healing, and Latinx romance magic that sinks straight into your chest and stays there.
Rocío Fontana is my girl. Brilliant, sharp, freshly divorced, and quietly wrecked in the way only betrayal can manage. Watching her step back into her power, into her body, and into her desire felt deeply personal and incredibly satisfying. What starts as one night meant to remind her she is still very much alive quickly spirals into something neither she nor me as the reader was prepared to walk away from.
And Xavier Delgado? Ay Dios MIO! From the moment he appears, the man is down BAD and not even a little bit ashamed about it. A reggaeton superstar clawing his way back from addiction and regret, Xavier could have been all swagger and attitude but instead, he is layered, vulnerable, and fiercely devoted to Rocío in a way that feels both swoony and earned. His steady “tú y yo, nobody else” energy hit especially hard knowing how deeply Rocío needed someone in her corner who would not waver.
What makes this romance shine is that the healing runs both ways. Rocío is not just the woman being adored. She shows up for Xavier with compassion and quiet strength when his past resurfaces, and that mutual care gives their connection real emotional weight. This is not just heat for heat’s sake. It is intimacy built on trust, growth, and two people learning they are worthy of being chosen.
Also, I need to mention Rocky’s friendships with Nikki and Alondra. Their scenes bring levity, sisterhood, and grounding that balance the intensity of the romance perfectly. We love a ride or die friend group!
Shelly Cruz writes spice with confidence and emotional depth, so every charged glance and every heated moment actually feel scorching. I was fully fanning myself and kicking my feet while still clutching my chest (and pearls).
Having already fallen into the Ficha Mundial universe through Wishing for La Luna by JL Lora, I can officially say this world has me in a chokehold. This book is for anyone who loves grown woman energy, emotionally available men who are obsessed in the best way, and romances where the healing is just as compelling as the heat.
Tropes: 💔 Divorcee heroine 🎤 Celebrity romance 🔥 Second chance at desire 💫 He falls first and hard 📈 Age gap 🌧️ Emotional healing 💃 Latinx romance
Xavier absolutely carried this book for me. I loved him with my whole heart and every scene with him had me fully invested. He had so much personality, charm, and emotional depth that I couldn’t help rooting for him the entire time. Also, Xavier’s dirty talk in Spanish? Yeah… that alone might be the highlight of my reading year. I will not be recovering anytime soon.
Bye bye rockstar romances, reggaeton romance has officially entered the chat.
This is part of the Ficha Mundial Universe, a collaboration between four authors where all the main characters are reggaetoneros. The first book is by JL Lora and this one is Shelly’s, and I love how each story still feels connected while bringing its own flavor. The music, culture, and overall energy feel so alive and immersive in the best way. Xavier’s Puerto Rican background was also woven in so naturally and made him even more compelling.
With Rocio, I understood her trauma and why she was so guarded, but the relationship felt a bit unbalanced for me. It often felt like Xavier was doing most of the emotional heavy lifting and trying to close that gap, while she kept him at arm’s length. But I loved that she was 41, a professional, and had a supportive friend group.
I absolutely ate this book UUUPPPPP!!! Wow My jaw hurts from dropping open!! I LOVE an OBSESSED MAN and Xavier has it bad for the smart sexy independent Rocky!! I absolutely devoured their love story journey from an unexpected one night stand to he can't get over that one encounter. Xavier a Reggatonero megastar with some demons in his past meets a women he cant take his eyes off of a successful independent divorce attorney who herself is newly divorced and needs to move on. Xavier becomes persistent not only in bis pursuit of Rocky but also the patience she needs and makes sure she was going to feel like the bad azz queen she is after her stupid X filled her with insecurity and self doubt. And Xaviers Spanglish dirty talk left me in a PUDDLE I mean I could keep on going about this man but y'all just need to read it for yourselves!! He is that perfect book.boyfriend with all the green flags in a red flag world!!
-Reggaeton romance -double latine leads -failed one night stand -he falls first -reverse age gap Thank you to the author Shelly Cruz I can't to read more of this world and the rest of your catalog.
There are some books you read and enjoy. And then there are books that sit with you, soften you, and quietly rearrange something inside your chest. Staying for La Lluvia is the second kind. Shelly Cruz writes with such tenderness and emotional clarity. Every moment feels intentional. The longing feels real. The vulnerability feels earned. This is a love story that understands that staying can be just as brave as leaving. It explores identity, family, desire, and the quiet spaces where love either grows or fractures. The romance is intimate and aching in the most beautiful way. I felt the hesitation, the hope, the fear, the pull toward something that feels inevitable. It reads like standing in the rain and realizing you do not want to run for cover. I also love celebrating stories by Latine authors that center complex, layered love. Shelly Cruz brings so much heart and nuance to the page. This is exactly the kind of romance that deserves to be uplifted and talked about. If you love emotional romance that lingers long after you turn the final page, this one is absolutely worth it.
Thank you to author, Shelly Cruz, for an advanced physical copy of Staying for La Lluvia.
I enjoyed this book so much. It is always refreshing to see Spanglish written in books and it was well done! Xavier es bien Bori y me encanto. Rocio who is newly divorced and looking to find herself and have fun. She wants to live a little and found herself head over heels con un Bori que esta enchulao' desde que la vio. Cruz did an amazing job with the 'one night stand trope'. I found myself so immersed in the story that I also didn't catch when their relationship turned into something more because he pursued her from day 1. That's a PERSISTENT man.
Shelly's writing of Xaviers addiction and Rocio's ex-husbands cheating was handled with so much tenderness and care. It was perfectly executed. I also really enjoyed that Rocio was a bad ass lawyer and didn't lose that part of herself even when she was going through it.
This book has everything you can think of-- drama, emotion, love, a mother that will make you feel every emotion in the book and the reggaetonero scene that we all love. If you haven't read it, make sure to check it out!
This was my first introduction to the Ficha Mundial universe, and trust me, I’ll definitely be back for more. Xavier’s devotion to Rocky was everything. From the very beginning, he loved her with intention, and his constant “tú y yo” reassurance made it clear he saw them as a team against the world. Also, holy plot twist, Batman! I did not expect her to be the other woman. That revelation alone had me shook.
I also loved how Rocky supported Xavier after learning about his past struggles with addiction. Instead of walking away, she stood by him and defended him, which made their bond feel even stronger. Their chemistry was undeniable, and watching them both heal, Xavier from his past and Rocky from her painful divorce, made the romance feel deeply meaningful.
Thanks to Shelly Cruz and The Next Step PR for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.
Rocky is so hesitant to trust anyone after her ex-husband cheated on her with half the women in Miami.
Xavier, a reggaetonero rockstar, knows exactly what he wants; Rocky.
A failed one night stand turns into a whirlwind romance full of Xavier yearning & proving his love to Rocky through his actions. I loved this one. I screamed at Rocky throughout the book, “let yourself be loved” but I understood why she was so hesitant. I love that therapy was talked about and how it wasn’t taboo. I also enjoyed the topic around drug addiction & how Xavier was honest about his battle.
I hated Rocky’s mother & useless father. I think her parents are the stereotypical parents, mother is jealous of daughter & father refuses to defend his child.
The romance and relationship that Rocio and Xavier have are literal GOALS. There were twists and turns in this story that kept me on my toes when certain events and incidents happened, such as Rocio finding out Xavier is a reggaeton artist and later down the story of how some characters are connected.👀 The way they fall in love with each other, the adventures to make their love happen and Rocio finding love after a divorce was just sweet to read. On the level of peppers, I would say 4 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️, Shelly has a way with words and descriptive in which I didn't know could even be described (in a good way lol). I smiled as I read the last page in which I believe the characters had a deserved ending.
I don’t have the words to express how much it means to feel seen from a book. Shelly does an amazing job at making you feel like you’re engulfed in our beautiful Latin culture! It all feels true and authentic
I love that both MCs are from different countries and how we get to experience both of them. Rocio is a badass and Xavier, well I absolutely love everything about him!
I laughed, I cried, and I GASPED! What an amazing story!!!
**This book does cover past drug addiction so please read those trigger warnings. I think this topic was represented very well with its depiction of the struggles people go through even when they’ve been able to stay clean.**
When I say I enjoyed every single chapter o f this book I mean Every. Single. Chapter — Yes, even the ones with Victor 🙄.
This story felt personal in ways I didn’t expect. I saw myself reflected in multiple characters — their emotions, their struggles, their growth. That’s how you know it’s written with heart.
And Xavier… listen. If he wants to whisper sweet nothings (or not-so-sweet things) I’m not complaining. 😮💨🔥
Shelly, thank you for this story. I’m already looking forward to what you give us next.
This is the second book of Ficha Mundial universe. We get to meet Xavier and Rocio. They show us how true respect and showing up for each other really means. Things change but once you are in a relationship you cannot let the outside world/people get in the middle. Love how Xavier gave Rocio her space, time and understanding. This story shows us emotions, openness and communication. Can’t wait to see what’s next for Ficha Mundial.
I loved this book. So good. I loved how Xavier fell for Rocky, how he catered to her and made her feel secure and safe, even after Rocky found out things involving her divorce. I love their little saying and how makes them both remember that isn’t about the world around them, but the love they have for one another. Super cute ☺️
Shelly has a way of telling a story that keeps you in it the entire time. Both POVs were written amazingly and flowed so smoothly. The plot twists were SO GOOD! Get this book NOW - you won’t regret it!
Where do I even begin?? I am so happy that I stumbled across these amazing Latina authors this year. This Ficha Mundial universe has been ON POINT! Shelly Cruz I thought JL knocked it out of the park with Wishing for La Luna but THIS BOOK! GIRLLLL! Rocky was the BADDEST b****! I saw so much of myself in her. She was absolutely FIERLESS. Now let’s move on to our MMC. I thought I was obsessed with Rio. NAHH. GIVE ME X PLEASE! la boca de ese hombre!!!! GIRLLLL. The story line was incredible. The amount of times I GASPED. The amount of times I yelled YOU FUCKIN LYIN! I literally couldn’t put this down.
I loved this age gap, SHE is older! It was definitely new for me and I completely enjoyed it. However, I would say at times Rocky pissed me off—if you don’t just let this man love you mujer! But, I totally get it, she had her walls up after being treated horribly by her ex-husband.
Xavier is a total delicious treat! He may be younger than Rocky, but his actions and intentions all align with grown men mentality. He’s extremely attentive and attractive to Rocky (he loves all of her grown woman curves). She can wear a garbage bag and that man will say it’s Gods own creation sent from heaven above for his angel on earth to wear.
