I love when series grow and characters are developed so well that the reader gets invested in their personal lives. I love that we’ve been allowed to tag along as Maddy gets ready for her wedding and we see the planning that goes into their special day. Family can be messy and there is no exception for this happy couple with a murder happening right before the big day. This mystery was well paced, with plenty of suspects to keep you guessing. And once justice is served, there’s a beautiful wedding that is the perfect ending to the story.

Murder at First Slice is the fifth book in the Baker Street Mystery series by Valerie Burns and the first one of the series that I have read. However, even though I have not read any of the previous books, as soon as I started reading, it was easy to get into the story. Burns writes it so that you get caught up instantly and fall in love immediately.
And I have to say Murder at First Slice is a pretty good book to start with if you haven't read any of the previous ones.
In Murder at First Slice main character Maddy is a week away from getting married. Her and Michael, the groom, have their wedding party set, the venue is booked, the wedding list is done, and close family and friends are arriving in town for some pre-wedding festivities.
Unfortunately, a few family members not welcomed show up. Dorothy, Miss Hannah's cousin shows up with her husband, her nurse and her husband's assistant. Miss Hannah, Michael's grandmother, has not spoken to Dorothy in about forty years and refused to attend the wedding if Dorothy is there.
Well, that ends up not being a problem because Maddy finds Dorothy's body and Miss Hannah standing nearby with a bloody rolling pin.
Everyone knows that there is no way that Miss Hannah would harm someone, let alone kill them, so Maddy and her crew do what they do .... look into the murder and all involved.
So, the week before Maddy is going to walk down the aisle in a beautiful wedding dress and marry the man of her dreams, she has to solve a murder .... in between all the wedding festivities. No worries she's got this !!
I highly recommend this series, and I plan to try to go back and read the previous books. If this one was this FUN, I can only imagine the others !!!

Poor Maddy was having the worst luck of anyone all through the wedding planning and even now as close as they were to the wedding, bad and weird stuff just kept happening. The worst thing was someone was trying to make it look like Michael’s grandma Miss Hannah killed her obnoxious relative. Maddy wasn’t resting until she found the real killer, so with her trusty sidekick Baby, all 250 drooling pounds of him, they nailed another killer. What a cool happily ever after though!

Maddy and Baby do it again… a small
Town love story with mystery and dead bodies wrapped up in icing and fondant 😉. In this book I very easily guessed the murderer., so that was a bittersweet. However finally getting the Micheal Maddy wedding we’ve been waiting on was fulfilling! Love the budding Colonel and Carson build up as well. There’s just so much sweetness in this book it makes my teeth hurt. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️!

4.5- Wow! This was such a fun time! I truly think this series just gets better and better. Murder at First Slice was so full of juicy drama and found family. If you love a cozy mystery but haven’t yet picked this series up,I would highly encourage you to do so. Dear Valerie Burns, can we have more in this series please?

Valerie Burns has done it again! Another amazing novel and confirms why she is in my top five favorite authors of all time. Every time she releases a new book, I’m counting down the days until I can get my hands on the book — and Murder at First Slice was no exception. I could not put it down.

Dorothy - a cousin of Mrs. Hannah - was invited with a PLUS ONE but she decided to bring the whole family. She also never RSVP’d (who does that) and hasn't spoken to the family in 40 years. Dorothy’s long‑standing feud with Mrs. Hannah, Michael’s grandmother, adds instant tension — and when Dorothy is found murdered outside the bakery, Mrs. Hannah becomes the prime suspect.
Naturally, Maddie and the Baker Street Irregulars jump into action, determined to uncover the truth. I knew Mrs. Hannah obviously couldn't have done it but there were alot of people who could have. There is the bitter old bitty Dorthey, her cheating husband, the mistress, the greedy daughter and the trouble granddaughter - the options are plenty.
What really took the cake (pun intended) is the character development. Valier has a talent for making her characters feel like real people, and I love seeing what my favorites are up to with each new book. There are so many meaningful developments in this story, and each one pulled me in even deeper.

Murder at First Slice by Valerie Burns is a fun romp (excluding the murder) through the week before a wedding, the bride being a little prone to hysteria. She had very little family but Michael had lots and putting together the guest list had been a challenge. It turns out Maddie invited someone she shouldn’t have, a cousin of Miss Hannah, Michael’s grandmother. Burns fills in most of the series’ background so, while it would be enjoyable, it is not necessary to read earlier books. Maddie, it turns out is a decent investigator despite her newfound profession as a baker. Michael is ex-army and his nickname for her is Squid, as she grew up as a navy brat. Lots more. All of it entertaining.

It was not too long before there was another murder. Poison. So, Maddie started looking at who might have access to such a thing. She made some missteps, as did the police. Cousin Dorothy is a difficult woman who seems to take pleasure in making others uncomfortable if only to get her way. So, it's not really a surprise when she is found dead - but it is an unsettling shock that Miss Hannah is a suspect!
Long held family secrets and outright lies slowly come to light as Maddy and the Baker Street Irregulars do some deep digging, ask questions and do a bit of research to figure out who may really be responsible. Despite the acting state Detective being convinced that Miss Hannah is guilty, everyone in town knows better and lets him know it!
The history between Miss Hannah and Dorothy was complicated but so is Dorothy's own family so there is a lot to explore. Some stunning revelations and well placed red herrings kept the story moving but also included several more lighthearted moments and lots of delicious sounding food references. A few recipes are included at the end of the book.
I love the core characters of this series. The Baker Street Irregulars had a couple of additions for this book which kept them on their toes. The relationships and dialogue all feel realistic. Of course the lovable Baby has several memorable moments!

These books got better as they go along and I am happy to continue my reading streak, although I seriously need to consider having baked goods available when I read these.

Maddie's wedding planner is heavily pregnant and could deliver at any time, the table settings arrive and are the wrong color. Maddie struggled with invitations and accidentally invited Michael's second cousin, who his grandmother, Miss Hannah, had a falling out with a long time ago. The woman is rude, entitled and makes a fuss at every turn. When she winds up dead, Miss Hannah is found holding the murder weapon. Now Maddie has to solve the mystery before she can marry Michael and clear Miss Hannah's name.
Baby, the mastiff, is the star of this book. He is as much of a character as the regulars, sometimes even better. I love the group/family settings that Ms. Burns creates in her books. She gives the reader the feeling that they are part of the story and you are returning to hang out with a treasured group of friends for 200+ pages. Her books always leave me feeling content (murder aside).

I had such a good time with this one! I can honestly say I enjoyed it just as much as the other books in the series. Every time I pick up one of these mysteries, I know I'm in for an entertaining mix of small-town charm, humor, great characters, and a mystery that keeps me guessing.
Watching Maddy juggle the excitement and stress of her upcoming wedding while trying to clear an innocent friend made for a really fun story. The family drama, the wedding chaos, and the murder all came together without feeling overdone. One of the biggest strengths of these books is the cast of characters. They feel like people I'd genuinely enjoy catching up with, and New Bison has become one of those fictional towns I'm always happy to revisit. It's just a cozy place to spend a few hours, even when someone ends up dead.
This was another enjoyable addition to the series, and I'm already hoping there are many more adventures ahead for Maddy, her friends, and the rest of this wonderful cast. I'd happily return to New Bison again and again.

Watching Maddy juggle the excitement and stress of her upcoming wedding while trying to clear an innocent friend made for a really fun story. The family drama, the wedding chaos, and the murder all came together without feeling overdone. Murder at First Slice is the 5th wonderful book in Valerie Burns's Baker Street Mystery series and it is the one we have been waiting for! Maddie Montgomery and Michael Portman are getting married! Friends and family are arriving for the big day. Unfortunately a relative of Michael's arrives unexpectedly with extra people and she causes problems. Michael's Grandmother Miss Hannah is very unhappy with these unwanted guests including her cousin Dorothy. When Dorothy ends up dead, Miss Hannah is a suspect along with Dorothy's entourage. The Baker Street Irregulars are on the case and include Maddie, Michael, Miss Hannah, Sheriff and best friend April, and friends Candy, Leroy and Tyler. Maddie's father is an Admiral in the Navy and Michael was in the Army so there are jokes and support for the branches of the armed services. The Admiral is dating Carson Law and The Carson Law Inn is where the wedding and some of the events are taking place. The cozy mystery is intermingled with wedding events which is fun and leads to Maddie and Michael getting married. Murder at First Slice was my first visit to New Bison, and while I definitely enjoyed it, I found myself wishing I had started at the beginning of the series. There are so many established friendships and relationships that I think I would have appreciated even more if I'd gotten to watch them develop from book one. That said, I never felt lost, and it was still a really lovely read! The mystery was a lot of fun, and I changed my mind more than once about who I thought was actually responsible. There were definitely plenty of people with reasons to want the victim gone!
I can't tell you how much I loved the town itself. You can tell these characters have built real relationships over the course of the series, and even coming in this late, I found myself smiling at how everyone rallied around Hannah. Nobody who really knew her believed she was capable of murder, and that sense of loyalty made New Bison feel like somewhere I'd happily come back to. And Baby was incredible! I completely understand why readers love him and he managed to steal just about every scene he was in.
This was such a cozy read. I'll definitely be going back to read the earlier books because I have a feeling I'll appreciate this one even more once I've spent more time with these characters!

This was a solid mystery with lots of love vibes and happy feelings--well except for a murder and associated drama. I love the characters. The author brings together a delightful crew of personalities—dogs included—and drops them into a high-pressure countdown to protagonist Maddy Montgomery’s wedding. With a murder to solve before the ceremony can take place, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Maddy’s tight-knit community of friends and family surrounds her, and they provide support and solutions when anything happens. When it comes to finding out why her memory-challenged grandmother-to-be is found standing over the body of her cousin and nemesis, holding the murder weapon, Maddy’s friends, aka the Baker Street Irregulars, join forces to find the culprit. The author writes realistic emotions into the characters and heartfelt scenes into the story, yet never neglects moving the investigation and mystery forward. It kept me turning pages, and the fast pace made me reluctant to put the book down when responsibilities called. With a sweet ending and more to look forward to, I, for one, can’t wait for the next release!

I'm just going to say that for well, about 90% of this book I just kept thinking "they better not ruin that wedding cake"....
ANYWAYS! As always the Baker Street Mysteries continue to entertain. I originally found this via audio, and the narration was great, as this was a NetGalley book, no audio this time around, but the story was great.
Maddy and Michael's wedding is upon us - there's baking galore, there are nice bridesmaids, there are side characters getting their second change (looking at you Carson & the Admiral!!), there's lots of Baby, and no wedding of Maddy's would be complete without a murder. I will say, for a lot of these Murder She Wrote type towns, I worry about them running out of characters to kill, so it was kind of nice that this time around our victim was Miss Hannah's cousin from out of town.
As always any book that ends with recipes is aces in my mind! I hope that Maddy & Michael get a nice relaxing honeymoon then come back for more crime solving!

One guest is unexpected and brings three people instead of the one plus one. Miss Hannah’s cousin Dorothy,whom Hannah has not seen for 40 years, arrives and immediately causes discord.
Then Dorothy is murdered and an already full week gets complicated.
The Baker Street mysteries are fun, and they sometimes rank among my favorites and sometimes they are a bit of a miss for me. Murder at First Slice is really good. Michael and Madison are getting married. But not until after Baby and Daisy. Madison has recovered from that and from the hangover left after her bachelorette party when she gets another shock. One of the invited guests is someone that her favorite baker (and Micahel's aunt), Miss Hannah, absolutely hates. And this is one one of her good days from the dementia that is ravaging her mind.
As they get to know Dorothy Wilson, it soon becomes clear that she is probably one of the family members that should not have been invited. She is not only rude, she manages to piss off almost everyone she meets. So, it's no surprise that she's the one to die in this book. The larger surpise is who is standing over her with a wedding gift that was given to Madison just the day before.
There was a lot crammed into a small number of days in this book which made it somewhat hard to follow but was still a fun book to read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington for the gifted copy of Murder at First Slice. As someone who loves a good cozy mystery with a little romance sprinkled in, this one was so fun! Even though it’s written as a standalone, I found myself wishing I’d started the series from the beginning because Valerie Burns casually drops little nuggets about past events that made me feel like I’d arrived at the party fashionably late. That said, the characters were so well-developed that I quickly became invested in Maddie, the wonderful supporting cast, and especially the sweet, quiet moments between Maddie and her father, the Admiral. And can we all agree that every cozy mystery is automatically improved by an adorable dog? Baby completely stole my heart. If you’re looking for charming small-town vibes, delicious food with recipes at the end, and a mystery that’ll have you craving the rest of the series, this one is definitely worth picking up.

A cute palette cleanser with sufficient red herrings and tasty treats. Maddy and Michael are getting married, but first they have to maneuver messy extended family drama and of course some murder as well.
I'm also glad to see that the references are now longer being overly explained unless it is something a little more obscure because that was something that irked me. (Though there is an error that should have been caught when Maddy and Alliyah say Arsenic and Old Lace was a Jimmy Stewart movie. It was Cary Grant!)

I know I am getting a treat when Valerie Burns has a new book ready to come out.; #MurderatFirstSlice #NetGalley is the 5th installment in the Baker Street Mystery series. Murder at First Slice is the 5th book in the Baker Street Mysteries. Maddy, who always seems to find herself in the middle of whatever murder mystery shows up on town, is preparing for her wedding to Michael. A week before the big event, family drama ramps up and a cantankerous cousin is murdered. As usual, the Baker Street Sleuths step in to help solve the murder while also putting all the last minute touches on the wedding. There are numerous suspects, plenty of twists, a delightful cast of characters, and two delightful mastiffs. What could go wrong? I love this series and hope there will be plenty more books to follow.

Murder at First Slice is another fun, hilarious book in the Baker Street Mystery series. Maddy and Michael are a week away from their wedding. Everything is running smoothly, or is it? An estranged cousin of Michael’s grandmother arrives. What could go wrong? She ends up dead and Miss Hannah is accused, resulting in the Baker Street Irregulars coming together to help solve the murder before the wedding. Add in Maddy’s English mastiff, Baby, weighing in at 250 pounds and his girlfriend, Daisy, a mere 160 pounds, and expect a few shenanigans. I love the series and the characters and I highly recommend it. And I hope there are more to come.

Maddy and crew are back again investigating after a distant relative of Michael's dies in their pre-wedding preparations. Even worse, Michael's grandma Hannah is the prime suspect. Even though she is busy with wedding prep, Maddy is determined to clear Miss Hannah's name.
This was another good mystery in this series. There was a lot of character involved stories, so I think if you hadn't read prior ones in this series, it might be a little more confusing. The whodunnit wasn't the most surprising, but it was still a fun read. And it ended with a successful wedding!
