From best-selling historical romance author Sian Ann Bessey comes romance and suspense in the heart of eighteenth-century London—a story of redemption and forbidden love.
London, 1776
It’s been twelve years since Hannah Dennington looked into the gray eyes of Samuel Ross, their depths as bleak as sadness itself. That childhood memory—the day she accused him of hiding a stolen pocket watch and sent him to appear before Sir John Fielding, the renowned blind London magistrate—still haunts her.
Young Samuel was certain he was bound for the gallows. Instead, the Blind Beak saw a soul worth saving and sent the orphaned pickpocket to serve in the Royal Navy—until a wartime injury returns a grown and changed Samuel to London, and Sir John grants him a trial post as a Bow Street officer. Determined to prove himself, Samuel uses his knowledge of London’s criminal element to apprehend felons.
When highwaymen hold up Hannah’s coach, it is Samuel who comes to her rescue. Almost instantly, he recognizes her as the girl who once betrayed him. But she’s now a woman whose beauty is matched only by her intellect and stubborn independence.
After a series of suspicious fires culminate with a blaze at the London wharf that threatens Hannah’s father’s warehouse, Sir John suspects an arsonist with a vendetta. Drawn into the investigation, Samuel and Hannah must navigate the danger and their unspoken past.
To catch the culprit, they’ll have to trust each other. To claim a future together, they’ll have to risk their hearts.
Sian Ann Bessey was born in Cambridge, England, but grew up on the island of Anglesey off the coast of North Wales. She left her homeland to attend university in the U.S., where she earned a bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in English. She began her writing career as a student, publishing several magazine articles while still in college. Since then she has published historical romance and romantic suspense novels, along with a variety of children's books. She is a USA Today best selling author and a Whitney Award finalist. Although Sian doesn't have the opportunity to speak Welsh very often anymore, she can still wrap her tongue around, "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch." She loves to travel and experience other cultures, but when she's home, her favorite activities are spending time with her family, cooking, and reading.
A story of second chances set in the early days of the Bow Street Runners in London. Hannah is a young woman with a regret: when she was a child she happened to identify a pickpocket who was instantly carted off to face justice— and, she assumes, the gallows. Samuel is a newly hired Bow Street Runner tasked with investigating a theft at Hannah’s father’s warehouse, along with other rapidly escalating threats along the docks. His past isn’t one he’s proud of, but one he’s tried to redeem. Of course, these two have met before, but what will they make of each other now?
The majority of this book was spent on its more adventurous elements: highwaymen, arson, potential jewel theft, and so forth. With all that going on, it was a bit challenging to also attend to Samuel and Hannah’s relationship. I like some of the author’s other books better, but this one might be just right for someone in the mood for a law-and-order type story.

A small action with large consequences Such a wonderful story. Twelve years ago, Hannah pointed out a young pickpocket, Samuel, with gray eyes full of sadness. Shortly afterward, realizing she probably sent him to the gallows. Now she has come face to face with a man who has the same gray eyes but has had a career in the English Navy and is now a Bow Street officer. As they begin to unravel a string of suspicious fires the truth of their original meeting is revealed and the consequences of her one small act examined. But life is nothing if not surprising and there are surprises still in store for them both. A wonderful read with twists you will not see coming. This book gets better with every page. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
this was an engaging read! i thoroughly enjoyed it! the plot was interesting and became even more after reading the author note, where i learned that some characters were real! but my main reason for liking this book was the main characters! they were very loveable and i loved their chemistry! their scenes were soo sweet (even the serious ones) that i kept waiting for them to appear! that is why seeing no epilogue was disappointing! i wanted to see Hannah taking care of Samuel’s business but it ended abruptly! 🥲
thanks to the publisher and the netgalley for the copy!
