This was my first time reading this author, and I can definitely see the vision behind this short story. The writing style was easy to read, with clear Australian vibes coming through in some of the phrasing. The narration has a very direct, almost “told” quality to it, which gives it a certain rawness. At times, though, it felt more like I was being told what was happening rather than being fully immersed in the moments themselves.

The concept of a couple who experience trauma, part ways, and then reconnect years later is full of emotional potential. I found myself wishing this had been expanded into a full-length novel, with more time spent exploring their shared past and the depth of what they went through. And more on their reconnection. Coming back together over just a few days felt a bit rushed to me, especially given how significant and painful their separation was. There’s a lot of trust that needs to be regained.

Overall, I did enjoy the idea behind it; I simply wanted more development so I could feel an even stronger emotional connection to the characters and their journey.

Thank you to the author for sharing this story as an advanced copy for me to read.

Buckle Bunny is the story of Travis and Jessie - the moments that tear them apart and the moments that bring them back together. I’m a sucker for a second chance romance and I loved every minute of this one. We all need a best friend like Anna! She is my fav 🩷
