Surrendering to the immortal fae king was never her choice. Falling for him will be her greatest betrayal.
Deirdre’s fate was sealed before one day, she would become the bride of the Deathless One—a title that promised more chains than vows.
Desperate to escape that future, she risked everything to flee with the man she loved. But when her defiance ends in blood, the immortal fae king drags her to his isolated realm, not as a queen, but as a captive.
With the vicious creatures and ancient magic of Kane's kingdom bending to his will alone, Deirdre's only hope as a mere mortal lies in wielding deceit like a weapon to cut down his defenses. Yet each clash with the fae king sends her resolve wavering between hatred of her immortal captor, curiosity about his secrets, and a genuine allure as inescapable as her situation.
The closer she gets to uncovering a weakness to destroy him, the more she's ensnared by his shadowy charms. To escape, she must find the weakness that could destroy his soul, but with every whispered promise and stolen moment, Deirdre’s resolve wavers.
The Deathless One is not what she thought, and with war brewing on the kingdom's borders, neither can afford her hesitation. But honoring her original plan will shatter both their fates...and following her heart will destroy the very world she vowed to save.
Uprooted meets The Cruel Prince in this lush, dual-POV fantasy romance that's perfect for readers who love epic worlds, enemies-to-lovers, slow burn romance, and meddling pixies.

Wow! Amazing 5 ⭐️ romantasy read!! Yessss! This is the arranged marriage with Capt!ve x captor I needed in my life!! Complete with morally gray shadow fae and his completely feral human bride. This story takes you on a journey filled with all the enchanting beings and creatures, beautiful worlds, magical castles. The political intrigue that follows the prophecy unfolding is a ride! I was so sucked into the story. I could not quit reading. You will feel all the feels in this one. Did I cry in the first chapters? Yes 😭 AND you get a *true* enemies to lovers with a villain that is questionably redeemable. I fall for villains too easily and even I was like ‘how are we going to redeem this one?’ 🤭 But I fell hard. I really enjoyed how the slow burn of the enemies to lovers played out and the twists that came along with that. It gives Beauty and the Beast feels. I immediately went from book one to book two because I could not handle stepping away from this story! Honestly, I was not okay 😅 and I needed to see how this twist will be redeemed.
I really enjoyed the hate to lovers banter and completely feral fighting matches with the sweet tender caretaking and protective moments. I would love to read this again and know I’ll enjoy it just as much the second time.

🫑🫑🥵 suggestive lead up situation but the *event* is stopped
It’s a good story. It could be great. But there are things missing for me. And also, I have a hard time with some of the writing, the conversations feel a little stiff, robotic. And the FMC, who in the beginning seemed so fierce and cool, feels weak and stupid by the end. I was really into her story in the beginning, but somehow that changed throughout. Kane on the other hand, he became more interesting by the page. I want to know more about his story. Kane is dark, but behind that darkness there’s something. He’s misunderstood. Although he is savage, but I don’t think he wants to be.
I typically like enemies-to-lovers romantasy, but this dark villain romance is not for me. It's well written. It's got good world building and character development. And I can understand why an author would want to explore the "what if you were forced to marry a man who killed your husband?" question because that's the sort of character stress that can make for fascinating character conflict.
My problem is, this isn't exactly what I was expecting from the book. The blurb makes it sound like she runs off from an arranged marriage she knew was happening and the fae king "slaughters her betrothed" shortly after. But in the first few chapters, we learn the fae king never came for her, the humans were telling her he never would, so she runs away with her childhood friend, they get married, and they are living together as husband and wife for a year before the fae king (Kane) suddenly shows up and murders her husband not because he's compelled to by prophecy but because of a dare.
I don't think I'd have started reading this if I'd known that's how the story began. It just enough different from the blurb that it wasn't quite what I was expecting and I don't want the story to go enemies to lovers. It's not a long book, so I did finish it, but I just disliked Kane more and more as it went on. Sure he has some sympathetic backstory moments, but he slaughters one of his own innocent subjects and thinks of capturing and subduing Deirdre as a fun game.
If this book was about Deirdre taking down the villain who killed her husband, then it might be more satisfying for me. It could even be a romance if someone other than Kane was the love interest. I do appreciate that she had realistic emotions in response to Kane, but I'm sure from the enemies to lovers tag she's going to forgive and fall in love with him and I don't want to keep reading the series for that.
Note: this book was given to me as an ARC; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you feel like so many books are lately advertised as an enemies-to-lovers story, and in the end, you feel like something was lacking, then Queen of Sorrows, Book 1 in Eliza Tilton's Immortal Fae King series, is the right choice for you.
Queen of Sorrows is a true enemies-to-lovers story, filled with gut-wrenching plot twists and turns, a cliffhanger that leaves you gasping, and an array of emotions ranging from deep and pure hatred to something akin to love and understanding. The story is action-packed, without dull moments, fast-paced, and with the type of plot to easily pull you in.
Right from the beginning, we are thrust into action as we follow Deirdre, who is trying to outrun her faith as a child of the prophecy and doing her best to live her life according to her own choices. But nothing is ever simple when prophecies are involved, right? And Deirdre will painfully learn that her choices are not her own. Are they even those of Kane, the immortal Fae king? They are two people deeply wounded and scarred by their past, guided by a prophecy and thrust into a situation neither of them actually wanted.
"I may be the villain in our story, but I will not become the monster." Kane
As I've said, Kane deserves the hate he gets from Deirdre, and I am not sure I, as a reader, could ever fully forgive him for what he did. Deirdre struggles with the guilt and the pain throughout the book, not knowing what the right thing to do is. And I completely understand her. She makes her fair share of bad decisions, and just as you think there might be a light at the end of the road, everything explodes into chaos of pain and betrayal. We are left needing to know what will happen next, and I can't wait to see the rest of Deirdre and Kane's story unfolding in the sequel. I loved being Eliza's ARC reader and will hopefully remain one in the future.
Betrayals, betrothals and bound by fate, Queen of Sorrows is Book one in a series that will have you glued to the pages.
If you love low spice books brimming with duplicitous cruel fae and pixies and their scheming and games, you are going to love this story. I love the machinations of the faerie court, and this one is full of players vying to take out their King.
The MCs are Kane, the Deathless One and King of the Fae, who is a moon fae x dragon shifter and Deirdre, a human, the child of a prophecy meant to bring peace to the world. Both are emotionally damaged and Kane hates humans believing they are sneaky and liars. Deirdre once believed in the dream of being Queen of Faerie, but when Kane never came to claim her when she came of age, she lost faith in her dreams and the prophecy.
Queen of Sorrows has excellent pacing and lots of plot twists! Kane's damaging past is slowly revealed and perhaps he and Deirdre have more in common than they thought. But can they ever trust each other enough to fulfil the prophecy. Encroaching in the background is the evil Lich King, who controls an undead army, and now wants Deirdre for reasons yet to be revealed.
The world building is well done, based mainly in the Fae King's castle and also in the beautiful forest world of the Dryad's. There are an abundance of different magical creatures which adds to the vibes of this lush magical world.
This is a no spice book, but plenty of tension and a simmering attraction that both Kane and Deirdre are determined not to give into. As they both betray each other, the reader is left guessing if these two will ever find a way past their hurts and hate. That cliffhanger I did not see coming!! I need to read book two and find out what happens next!!
My thanks to the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the review copy, and this is my honest opinion. This is a must read! I enjoyed Kane's character so much and I think this is a great start to the series!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters are relatable even from a magic standpoint. I had a really hard time liking Kane, but the author built his character throughout the novel. I was left on a cliffhanger to anticipate the next installment of this unfinished love story.

Hello, people! First of all, let me mention that this book is the first book in the series The Immortal Fae King. The plot is full of suspense, twists, tension, intrigue, conspiracies and secrets. The story is quite strong and together with the very well-structured world building, everything ties together incredibly and creates a reading that wins over its readership. The characters are well-written and have depth and her writing is enjoyable, fast, rich and direct.
Thank you very much to the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the eARC!
An epic fantasy story about a girl who was fated to marry the deathless king and in doing so was to unite the human and Fae realms. The problem was the Fae king hates humans and has banned them from his realm. When he makes no move to claim her, she runs away and marries her best friend and lives a happy life for a year until he shows up for her, kills her husband and takes her away.
Trapped in the Fae realm she undergoes the cave of blessing and not only passes it but bonds with the unicorn inside the cave who blesses her and gives her a promise to come if she calls on him.
She meets her husband the king’s cousin who promises her freedom in exchange for helping him subdue the king. Before this happens though she learns more about the king, her new husband and her feelings start to change towards him but when his cousin enacts his plan she has no choice but to go along with his plan or be killed as a traitor to the king and the country now.
Together she and Gideon escape into another realm knowing Kane will be coming for them and if not him then the other evil force that is bent on taking over the Fae and human realms as well!
This was the first of at least two books and has left me waiting anxiously for the second book to come out so I can continue the story and see what happens next!
It’s been an exciting page turning fantasy of enemies to friends ( almost) back to enemies and maybe more later depending on what transpires in book two! With Deirdre being the girl of Prophecy to unite the realms whose to say if she still won’t somehow accomplish that task even though she has been sidelined by Kane’s cousin Gideon!
This book is well written and will hold your interest throughout and I wholeheartedly recommend you read this intriguing and fascinating book but just beware you’re heading for a cliffhanger at the ending and will have to wait for Queen of Tragedy book two to continue this exciting story!
Queen of Sorrows has me OBSESSED! I devoured the story and fell HARD for Kane, ruthless vibes are SO my thing. I'm literally on the edge of my seat wondering what's next... can't WAIT for the next book and see what she does with it.

When she comes of age, she will be surrendered to the immortal fae king. That’s what Deirdre believes her future is. But when the time came, the fae king didn’t come. Then she move on and married another man. In the middle of their happiness, suddenly the fae king comes after them and everything is going wrong.
Deirdre's story starts by breaking our hearts deeply. There is so much darkness in the story. Dark romance, dark magical creatures, dark adventures, negative emotions, painful past, heart conflict and many more. The lies, betrayal and hatred are so deep. They punch and stab your heart at the same time. The slow-paced plot is suitable for a story like this and, yes, is full of pain, drama and agony. Is this not an enemy to lovers story, it is married to a villain one. Every chapter plays with our feelings and minds, especially when a decision or feeling is conflicted with a political action. Kane, the Dark Fae King, is very damn wicked, but he is also being misunderstood by everyone. I started to like him in the middle to the end of the story. He just needed someone who loved him dearly and taught him empathy. There are so many magical beings here, which makes the story more interesting, especially the connection between them and the magical elements.
I must admit when I see Eliza Tilton's name pop up, I ignore the blurb as her novels are a must read for me. I've read so many of her stories and I've loved each one so, it's no surprise that I absolutely loved reading Queen of Shadows. I love how the characters are created in this story, we have Kane the Fae King who seems harsh and a little uncaring but deep down we know there's some underlying issue that makes him the way he is. Deirdre is the human with the birthmark that makes her the chosen one, simple you'd think but with any good arranged marriage trope it's not and I'm here for it. The supporting characters are just as main character energy as the MFC and MMC. Gideon was created excellent, is he friend or foe. It was really hard to tell and I loved pixies and all the other Fae that were in this novel. I love how we get an array of tropes throughout this novel and they all work so well keeping in with the storyline. I love the way the story progressed and the twists and turns we got given kept me gripped. This is why I love Eliza's writing style, she knows how to engage the reader and immerse us into the stories, not only reading but experiencing what we've read, feeling each emotion the characters feel - especially towards the end, I certainly felt for both Kane, Deirdre. I can't wait to read book two because after that ending I suspect we're baiting for blood.
Queen of Sorrows surprised me in all the right ways. It’s dark, emotional, and full of that delicious enemies-to-lovers tension that fantasy romance fans live for. Deirdre’s connection to the Deathless Fae King, Kane, is messy, painful, and magnetic all at once and I loved that the story doesn’t shy away from how complicated fate and choice can be.
The worldbuilding is lush and dangerous, with prophecy, betrayal, and fae magic woven together in a way that feels alive. I especially liked that we get both POVs becuase it made Kane more than just the typical brooding immortal, and gave real weight to their conflict.
The pacing wobbles a little in the beginning, and sometimes Deirdre’s choices frustrated me (girl, please communicate), but by the halfway mark I was hooked. The ending leaves a lot hanging, but it made me want the next book immediately.
If you like your fantasy romance with high emotional stakes, tension you could cut with a knife, and a heroine determined to fight her destiny even when it breaks her heart, Queen of Sorrows delivers.
This book is VERY “I hate him so much.. unfortunately he’s devastatingly attractive and emotionally complicated” coded 😭 The tension between Deirdre and Kane absolutely carries the story because every interaction feels like it’s balancing between violence, manipulation, yearning, and emotional damage at all times. Kane especially has that classic terrifying immortal fae king energy where he says one vaguely soft thing and suddenly you’re questioning your entire moral alignment. I also liked that Deirdre doesn’t just immediately fold into the romance.. she’s angry, suspicious, stubborn, and constantly trying to survive the situation she’s trapped in. The worldbuilding leans heavily into dark lush fae fantasy vibes too.. cursed kingdoms, dangerous magic, shadowy courts, vicious creatures, and enough emotional suffering to feed an entire romantasy fandom for months. This genuinely feels like the kind of book that causes people to aggressively tab-highlight quotes at 2am while whispering “your honor unfortunately I love toxic fictional people.”
Thank you to the author and HHBT for the gifted copy! This doesn’t affect my honest review.
This one was super exciting start to finish. We had such a quick and relatively unusual start to this enemies-to-lovers romance. The FMC, Deirdre, was already married AND with her husband when the king of the fae country comes for her to fulfill her prophecy. Oooooo it was so good. Kane did broody yet yearning so well as he genuinely wanted Deirdre’s love but the circumstances were just sooo badddd. It just shows how far they had to come to gain love and trust from one another.
Now that ending… my head is literally spinning. I am unwell. I am sick. I am confused. WHAT DO YOU MEANNNN?? How is that the ending! What a cliffhanger !! I need to start the next book literally right now.
Loved the world building and solid plot line. I didn’t feel like the story dragged or confused by the places or characters which I feel is worth mentioning because this can fall short a lot in fantasy books.
I love Eliza Tilton's ability to weave a story rich with details and fantastic world building. My emotions were pulled in so many directions with each chapter that I found myself fully invested in Deirdre's character and hating Kane for how the start of this played out. As the story continues, I felt like I was fully on Kane's side, and at the end, I was furious with Deirdre and her choices !
There's a conniving cousin, mischievous pixies and more to keep this reader wanting the next installment, Queen of Tragedy!
I thought this book was pretty good. The world building was amazing. As were the characters. So well developed and realistic feeling. It felt deep and pulls you into the drama and chaos of this story. So I was invested in this from beginning to end. I loved both main characters. Neither were what I thought they would be. So I loved that. A really good book. And I can’t wait to read the others.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Good story with good flow. I did think that a couple of parts were a little repetitive, but still, overall, a good book. It leaves off just as thinks are really getting interesting, so I am looking forward to seeing what will happen next!
“I have existed since the breaking of the realms. A watcher to the rot and ruin. Saol is fractured. You are chosen, but not for the reasons you think. Be careful, young one. The shadows are watching.”
This was an interesting approach to an arranged marriage situation. I found Dirdre’s magic quite interesting and the banter between Dirdre and Kane was top notch. Their relationship changes so much throughout the book and I’m very interested to see where it will go in book 2!
The most mysterious and interesting parts to this book revolve around the prophecy and the Lich King. I feel like as a reader, the questions around these topics are just the surface of a deeper problem or fate.
I was absolutely reeling at the end of the book with the final scene making me hate Gideon so much more.
“The longer I stay here, the less of a villain he becomes. I need to leave. Before I betray everything I stand for.”
I feel like that quote says everything about this book. There is so much happening between Deirdre and Kane and the tension between them is next level. Kane takes being misunderstood to a knew level and I kinda feel for him because he was never really given what he needs, and it becomes obvious while reading and the way he reacts to certain situations. There was a lot I enjoyed about the book, but somethings I wish I had more off, and some I wish we had less of.
There are certain things that I struggled with while reading the book, and I feel like the potential was there for this to be an amazing 5⭐️ read, I just feel like for me it fell flat and by the end of the book I went from like Deirdre to not being her biggest fan.
🖤He Falls First ✨Child of Prophecy 🖤Elemental Magic ✨Immortal Fae King 🖤Arranged Marriage ✨Touch Her & 💀 🖤Dragon Shifter ✨“Who did this?”
I really enjoyed this book. Deidre and Kane are both well developed characters with complex back stories influencing their choices. Its a true enemies to lovers dynamic with plenty of court intrigued and a huge stakes external threat.
The progression of Deirdre’s and Kane's relationship is steady and has that perfect capture/captive set up intermingled with destiny.
Rating: 🐧🐧🐧/5 Quick Reasons: "fated" meets "resisted" love; enemies to forced marriage to ....? ; interesting plot; had trouble connecting emotionally
Huge thanks to Eliza Tilton and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the ARC! This review is voluntarily written and in no way impacted by this gesture.
This dark fantasy, enemies to forced marriage to ...?, fated meets resisted love read was filled with interesting characters, strange magic, and a lingering sense of foreboding. The plot is intriguing, stuffed with heavy moments and thought inducing spins. The story to follow promises delicious snark, a lot of angst, and redemption or revenge... of some sort.
The characters play off each other well; Deirdre is rife with emotions, a powder keg in her own right, alongside the devil may care Kane who is now learning how to feel. I had a hard time, though, with really connecting to the characters emotionally-- some of the decisions they make or words they say did not seem to fully match the mood or tone I would anticipate in such moments.
Still, this was an interesting journey and I'm glad to have been part of it! I would recommend this to lovers of forced marriage, dark fantasies, and magical worlds. The Queen has been claimed, Penguins; will you bow to her... or fight her?
✨✨BOOK REVIEW✨✨ I blew through this book!! I love an insta-hate fated mates situation 😩 The way this FMC HATES the MMC is perfect! Like she does things to spite him so many times throughout this book. Just when they’re actually getting close and she thinks maybe this could work she accidentally betrays him 😅 The MMC on the other hand tries his best to be patient and understanding with the FMC and doesn’t force her to perform certain duties, I mean does he kill her human husband and force her to marry him? Yes but like we all have our flaws 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ The ending to this book was insane and I cannot wait to read the next! If you are looking for a fast paced fantasy read with dragon shifters, lies and deceit and a prophecy you’re going to love Queen of Sorrows! Thank you to Hidden Hollow Book Tours for having me on this review Tour
I love a good multi POV story! This was such an enjoyable read with reluctant feelings, a dragon shifter, political intrigue, and meddling pixies.
A girl was raised to be the bride of the Immortal Fae King but he never showed. Once she created a life for herself and was truly happy, everything changed.
There's the death of a loved one, starting a new life against the will of the FMC, and betrayal. But I really like the progression of the main relationship. I'm all for the sweet moments coming out of distrust so this was perfect for me. It has that Beauty & the Beast vibe going on. So, if you enjoy that, then you'll love this!
It's fairly fast-paced and the struggle of both the FMC and the MMC come from different places but they are still fighting the same feelings and the forced proximity helps them see the different sides of each other.
I loved the pixie banter, the nickname "Thorn," the world building, the unicorn, the soft side of the MMC, and the lavender shortbread cookies.
I didn't love how fast the FMC trusted (but she's young, so I understand). Yeah, that's it.
But trust, who to trust, is always the question because if you're kidnapped, do you trust the kidnapper or the person the kidnapper doesn't want you talking to?
I received this ARC with no obligation to write a review.
I loved this story can't wait for the next book. Human girl, part of a prophecy to marry the Fea king. Kidnapped, betrayal, manipulation and evil around the corner. Deirdre doesn't know we're to turn. I recommend this story to urban fantasy lovers.
Queen of Sorrows had such an intriguing premise! The fast-paced plot kept things moving, and I loved the mix of prophecy, fae, and dark creatures woven throughout the story. There’s a lot of interesting world-building and plenty of darker fantasy elements that will appeal to readers who enjoy atmospheric romantasy adventures.
I just devoured this book in almost one sitting! I only stopped at 90% because it was past my bedtime and I knew I would want to jump right in to the next book. I finished it at the first opportunity the next morning, and I am so glad to have an ARC of book 2 ready to go!
I love the pacing of the book, as I was sucked into the action almost immediately. World building and exposition was built into the story, thought admittedly a bit shallowly done. I’m ok with that, because it was a dive straight into the plot, and I’m here for it.
The characters are good, and I definitely felt a connection to them, but I found them to be a bit flimsy. Deirdre swears she is a gentle, nature-loving nurturer, but insists on pursuing her hatred for Kane even when she learns more about him. I understand trying to prolong the tension, but it felt forced. She was also too easily swayed by Gideon, when all he offered her was “freedom.” Freedom from what? She knew her destiny from birth, and accepted it long ago. How could she possibly live “free?” What else does she have in her life? Would she just live alone in the woods with her donkey? 🤷🏻♀️ what is she fighting for? It didn’t seem like a strong conviction on her part.
Kane wants to be morally gray, but is actually just a traumatized guy who never learned how to rule. He doesn’t seem to do much ruling, just rushing off in response to the Lich King. Who is running the kingdom? Maybe that is Gideon’s complaint and the reason he is trying to overthrow Kane? Again, unclear.
Overall, I liked the book and it was a quick and entertaining read, so I gave it 4 stars. However, it was kind of shallow when I look back on the story. Will I read the next one? Absolutely. Immediately. Will I read the other 3? Depends on whether Deirdre and Kane gain some depth and keep my interest!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This started out way darker than I expected, and I honestly wasn't sure how the FMC and MMC were ever going to get out of "enemy" territory. Learning more about the world and the Fae king's past has really got me interested in the prophecy and how this is all going to work out. And that ending? So many questions left!
An exciting new romantasy that captivated me. I enjoyed this fast-paced read about prophecy and freedom, fae, and dark creatures.
The dual pov between Deirdre and Kane was perfection! I enjoyed getting into both of their heads. Both characters were flawed and made mistakes. There was so much I want to know yet like Kane’s past, I can’t wait for the next one.
I enjoyed the build up in relationship between the characters and then the twisted ending so good! Be prepared for a cliffhanger at the end!
If you enjoy enemies to lovers, slow burn, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, betrayals, lies, secrets, fae, prophecy, war, and so much more then check this one out!
Wow! What a book! This is a very fast paced book, and when I think I have it figured out a huge plot twist happens. I devoured this book in two days and would highly recommend it to anyone. There are some dark themes in the book but its smut free which I appreciate. I will definitely be looking forward to book 2!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Well, this didn't go in the direction I was expecting. It was far more interesting and addicting than I would have thought, going in. The most important thing I have to tell you is that I love Boots more than anything and I would die for him. Who is Boots, you ask? Well, one way to find out! (I won't do that to you, he's a donkey. His existence is enough to make this book worth it.)
So there's a prophecy. Clearly, our protagonist will be the child of prophecy. Right? Well, she's actually too busy with Boots to worry about all that. And he deserves it.
Anyway, the actual book. We get no introduction to Kane, he's mentioned as if we've always known him. Which everybody in that world has, I suppose. He's pretty much an asshole and that sums him up. His character does change throughout the book, and we learn a lot about his path. And yes, he does some changing for a girl, but also for himself, his kingdom, his people. He remains interesting, and still somewhat an asshole, for the entire book. This was a big part of why I kept reading. The rude, yet utterly gorgeous of course, male love interest doesn't drop everything to change into a dream man, but instead has a personality and conflict of his own.
And then, Deirdre. She was raised to be a YA heroine and decided that wasn't for her, so she ran away. Does she still have some of that in her? Sure. Is she also interesting and fun and valid in her emotions? Absolutely. I understand the struggle she is forced to face on a daily basis and the choices she makes. She's a decently rounded character who doesn't let the plot decide her actions and I ended up quite liking her.
The pixies are fun too. Their relationships to each other and to Kane really add to the story, without them feeling too much like a plot device.
There's a few points that come back regularly throughout the story. Little details that fill out the world and maybe even give you a little giggle. I laughed, anyway.
We have a king and a castle, therefore there must be a court. After all, what's a story without some court intrigue? We focus largely on one member of the court, and it's definitely not the most boring one. I'll leave the judgment of his character up to you.
Oh, right, the magic system. There's thirteen types of magic. There's the usual ones, like water or lightning, and some that seem to be pulled right out of a DND book. I spent the first fifty pages wondering if that wasn't what this was based on. If it was an inspiration, they managed to hide it pretty well in the end. But I digress. The magic system is solid, not the main focus, yet still a relevant part of the story.
I do want to note that I appreciate that the fae king didn't come for the child of prophecy when she was a literal child. Everyone seems to have thought 'of age' meant sixteen, which is gross, but he didn't. Immortal-mortal romance is always awkward, but it helps when nobody is an actual child (looking at you, 'how long have you been seventeen?').
The final note I made on this novel was, 'You can't leave me like that'. I wanted more and sadly, I have to wait a while before there will be more. I would put this one in the category of 'not revolutionary, but compelling and entertaining'. It pulls you in quick, keeps you engaged and sets its twists up well. A nice read that uses the word 'balloon' in a context I've never seen before and still don't fully understand.
