Ellie and her husband Matthew embark on a romantic adventure to a grand antebellum mansion in Covington, Georgia, The Manor. Not long after their arrival, Ellie experiences a series of strange events, including a confrontation with the apparition of a seemingly faceless woman. Dismissing these odd experiences as mere dreams, Ellie is determined to make the best out of their trip.

Another perfect spooky read for the month of October. Each sentence reads like a sleep paralysis moment. Taut, constricted, held with bated breath on what comes next. But then, there is a release of breath in the middle of it, as if the ghost featured in this story is taking one final, restful exhale as it’s laid respectfully to rest.
Pate Jennings has crafted a tragic yet hopeful modern gothic tale. This truly was the saddest ghost story I’ve ever read. I teared up a few times reading Rebecca’s story and how she came to haunt the Manor. Absolutely heartbreaking details between her and the man she never got to spend her life with.
Ellie was such a strong protagonist, too. I love how she never gave up and continued forward in the mystery. She wasn’t afraid to show her true emotions throughout, such as fear and overwhelming sadness. Yet she persevered.
If you’re looking for a modern gothic ghost story that isn’t too heavy with any fear-inducing scenes, this one is for you! 10/10 would definitely recommend reading this beside a fireplace with cocoa.
