Fate be damned.

Now imprisoned in Moros, buried deep in the Land of the Dead, Finnian is determined to right a wrong he made centuries ago. Somewhere in the hellish landscape is his father, and he intends to find him and flee their chains together.

Cassian, the High God of Death and Curses, has one desire: get Finnian to confess where he's hiding a valuable weapon—one deadly to deities.

For centuries, the High Goddess of Fate has plagued Cassian over a dispute that took place between them long ago. Desperate to end her antagonizing once and for all, Cassian grants Finnian with a choice to either hand over the weapon or endure one of his curses.

The Kiss of Delirium.

After centuries of using necromancy, stealing the High God of Death and Curses's souls, and playing a heated game of cat-and-mouse, Finnian knows all the ways to crawl under Cassian's skin. Racing against the silent clock of the curse chipping away at his sanity, Finnian must figure out a way to outwit his long-standing enemy and learn the whereabouts of his father before his mind erodes entirely.

However, the more their fates begin to tangle, the more old feelings ignite.

Chaos is inevitable.

Even in Death is the second book in the Fragile Divine, an interconnected dark fantasy romance series about the frailty of gods and goddesses. You can expect high stakes, all the emotions, a mythology-inspired world, urban settings, mental health rep, and a little horror. The series must be read in order.

My Thoughts:

Audiobook rating: 5⭐️ Absolutely perfect!
Story rating: 5⭐️ So good that I fear I will never recover.

When I tell you this book had me sobbing, I mean it. Blotchy face, snot coming out of my nose, tears blurring my eyes, weeping. I was an emotional mess, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

Even In Death is a breathtaking story about the lengths you are willing to go to for love that will simultaneously make your stomach flutter and break your heart.

Out of the 50 books I’ve read this year, both traditional and indie, this is hands down the best book I've read/listened to all year!!!! I loved EVERYTHING about it! From the wonderful MCs, Finnian and Cassian, to their heart-wrenchingly beautiful romance, from the intriguing world building to the high-stakes plot, this is a story that I'll never forget. It's been two weeks since I listened to this audiobook and I honestly still cannot think about anything else. . . I haven't felt this way about a book in so long!

Finnian and Cassian’s story starts right in the middle of chaos. The Goddess Of ends with Finnian offering himself up to Cassian, the High God of Death and Curses, in place of his sister. And the present day storyline starts with Finnian's torture. Right away, we're thrown into this brutal, high-stakes situation. Finnian’s dealing with so much: surviving captivity, protecting Naia and his nephew, trying to free his father, and on top of all that, he’s fighting to keep his mind intact against a curse. And then there’s Cassian, who seems like this cold, merciless god at first. But really he's misunderstood, deeply wounded, and desperate for revenge. And as the story shifts between past and present, you really understand his character so much more.

I'm not going to lie, I honestly wondered how on earth we were going to move past the enemies part of the romance. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that their connection is something far more powerful. Their history? Complicated. Their chemistry? Off the charts. Their love? Painful, raw, and true. They’re like two souls caught in a storm, constantly pulled back to each other no matter how hard they try to stay apart. It's the kind of love that makes your chest ache in the best way. Cassian and Finnian would do anything for one another, even if it means hurting themselves. Their story is intense, emotional, devastating, and full of yearning - the best kind (at least to read about).

I truly loved Cassian and Finnian as a couple, but also as individual characters.

Finnian is commanding, fierce, and impossible not to respect. But underneath all that strength, he’s kind, just, and fiercely loyal. Once he cares about someone, that’s it, he’ll protect them with everything he has. I admired and respected his unwavering devotion to the people he loves. And the way he wrestles with guilt and grief? It felt so honest and relatable. He’s a badass on the outside and all heart on the inside.

And then, there's Cassian. My heart. 🥹🫶 Beneath the title of High God and all that cold, sharp exterior is the softest, most cinnamon-roll sweetheart you’ll ever meet. He’s spent so long closing himself off from love (because he’s had to) but the moment he opens his heart to Finnian, it’s over. He loves with his whole soul. He’s attentive, gentle, and would give up everything for Finnian. He completely wrecked me with how deeply and purely he loves.

The dual POV added so much to the emotional depth of this story. You get to live inside both of their heads - feel their conflict, guilt, and longing. Watching their love grow out of pain and mistrust into something so pure and selfless was one of the most satisfying reading experiences I’ve had in a long time. Their devotion to one another made me want to cry out in joy and agony all at once. I honestly can say that I am forever changed by them and their love. 😭

I also really appreciated how the story wove past and present together. The dual timeline allowed us to experience the full scope of their history. The way the pieces of their connection were slowly revealed, the way certain interactions hit harder once you understood their context...it was masterfully done. 👏

The continued world-building was also impressive. This story expanded on the mythology introduced in book one by exploring different realms (realm of the dead), meeting new Gods, and providing a more complete history of the Gods. I also loved that Naia, Ronin, and their little family show up in this story.

The ending absolutely destroyed me. I really can't even get into it without spoiling things, but so much happens romance and plot-wise. I probably aged 10 years just from the amount of anxiety and worry I had for these characters. And then . . . I was sobbing. Uncontrollably. I'm tearing up just thinking about it now. Don't worry, there is a happy ending. But damn did Randi Garner put us through hell to get to it.

And the epilogue! 👀 I am foaming at the mouth for the next book, which will follow a different couple.

Benjamin Crow and Will Watt were PHENOMENAL audiobook narrators! They brought Finnian and Cassian to life so vividly, capturing every emotion with care and depth. I was completely immersed, and could genuinely listen to both of them speak for hours.

Overall, Even In Death is a masterpiece. It's everything I want in a dark romantasy: angsty, tender, emotional, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Randi Garner continues to blow me away with her ability to craft such deeply human stories in the midst of divine chaos. This book is now permanently etched in my heart.

If you haven’t started this series yet, go grab The Goddess Of immediately. Trust me, you're going to want to be part of this world.

PS: If you’ve read the Dramione fanfic Manacled by SenLinYu, you are going to LOVE this. The vibes are definitely similar. There’s a captive/captor dynamic, a romance slowly revealed through past and present timelines, and that same dark, brutal, and emotionally gutting intensity. It’s complicated and heartbreaking. And it hurts in all the best ways. So if you’re looking for a story that will shatter you and stay with you forever, this is it.

Thank you Randi Garner for sending me the audiobook on NetGalley! As always, all opinions are my own.

All this book brought me was a cascade of disappointment, one after another. I was initially filled with excitement; the premise, the couple, and everything about it sounded so promising and captivating. In hindsight, I should have recognized the warning signs after the first book, which I didn't enjoy at all.
I deeply regret reading this series.

This particular installment left me feeling intensely frustrated and enraged. I entered with the understanding that it was a dark romance, set within the confines of the enemies-to-lovers trope. I was fully aware of this going in. However, for that trope to truly resonate with me, I believe both characters need to challenge each other equally. Sadly, this was not the case here.

The opening scenes of the book were nearly unforgivable, and no amount of subsequent revelations could redeem them for me. Their relationship felt undeniably toxic, but not in a way that engaged me; rather, it left me feeling queasy and disheartened. To make matters worse, the pacing was excruciatingly slow, and the dual timeline aspect only detracted further from the story, making it feel like an endless slog.

The romance, which was meant to be breathtaking and profound, instead struck me as utterly awful. Firstly, there was a glaring lack of chemistry between the characters, and secondly, the way their relationship unfolded was off-putting. I anticipated dark romance, but the author's approach to transforming their animosity into affection felt poorly executed and lacking depth.
Cassian was utterly repulsive, and Finnian was a fool.

In conclusion, I am left with a profound sense of disappointment and anger regarding this book. Even as I attempt to articulate my feelings in this review, I find myself too exhausted to express everything I’d like to say, even though I know there's so much more to convey.

FINNIAN AND CASSIAN… YOU TWO ARE A MENACE. 😭🔥

This book was like a slow-burning curse—beautiful, painful, and completely unhinged in the best way. We’re back in the Land of the Dead, and let me tell you, the tension?? Off. The. Charts. Finnian, the stubborn necromancer with a past full of secrets, is locked in a deadly game with Cassian, the brooding High God of Death. And when I say these two HATE each other… I mean, hate with a capital H—except, do they really? 👀 The chemistry was pure chaos, and I was LIVING for it.

The dual timelines?? A MIND-BENDER. One second, I was rooting for Cassian’s downfall; the next, I was crying over his devotion. The way Randi Garner weaves past and present together had me questioning EVERYTHING. Was Finnian really the villain? Was Cassian?? Was I just being emotionally manipulated the whole time?! Probably. And I loved every second. 😭

Now, let’s talk pacing. The first 100 pages felt more like a revenge story than a romance, and I was lowkey impatient. But once the curse kicked in and Finnian started losing his grip on reality? BOOM—obsessed. The unraveling of their history, the betrayals, the longing?? Pure torture (and I ate it up).

Final thoughts? This was a DARK, gut-wrenching ride with gods, curses, and a romance that felt both inevitable and impossible at the same time. The world-building? Gorgeous. The angst? PAINFUL. The romance? A Greek tragedy waiting to happen. If you love warring deities, morally grey disasters, and enemies-to-lovers with a side of existential crisis, this one’s for you. 📖✨

“Death is peace, Finnian, and pain is simply a sign of love’s presence.”

considering this was the book that initially made me want to read this series.. my expectations were HIGH. after loving The Goddess Of, i could tell Cassian and Finnian’s story would feel like a punch straight in the chest and it definitely was. this book was DARK and so emotional, Finnian’s need to preform necromancy because he couldn’t come to terms with the finality of death was so sad. i wasn’t sure how I’d feel about him after the way he acted in book one, but i loved seeing more of him here and what he had been thinking.

“I loathe you just as much,” Cassian whispered. I long for you, is what he wanted to say instead.

Cassian being the god of death and curses didn’t make things easier for them and Cassian definitely did a lot of harm to Finnian on several occasions. Cassian’s reputation precedes him, but underneath it all he’s easily wounded and will go to extreme lengths not to lose Finnian. it’s just two people who truly hate each other in the present, but then we get snippets of the past and all the longing and devotion they once shared. it makes you question if both of them are really as bad as they’d been painted out to be. the romance itself is devastating and beautiful, but the plot did start to get convoluted towards the end a bit. i think this author is incredible at writing deeper emotions and love story’s that transcend time and this book was no different.

“I am not strong enough to face you when you despise me. Even if it is only temporary.” “You have before.” “Not after knowing what it is like to love you.”

"I loathe you"
"And I long for you"

Hear me out, I'm literally crying as I write this.

It was so painful, heartbreaking and tragic.
It's my first MM romance, and it’s such a great beautiful love story. It’ll take me a long time to emotionally recover after reading it. I cried so much and couldn’t calm down.

"Death was love, and love was death again."
"Death is much more than a collection of endings."

It was a deep dive into existential themes and I enjoyed every second of it. I was able to look at death from the different perspective.
The theme of family relationships is also well developed here, just like in the first part of this series. It really resonated with me again, especially the father figure. I wish every child could have such a loving father as Vale.

I realize why the author mentioned Sleep Token in aknowledgments. I could hear their music in my head while I was reading, even though I hadn't turned it on. My mind just decided it was the perfect combination unconsciously. It was Infinite Baths, Take me back to Eden, Emergence, The Summoning, Rain, Even in Arcadia..

For now, that's all I can write. Maybe later I'll be able to add a few more thoughts of my own to this review.
I am very grateful to Randi Garner for this wonderful journey.

Randi Garner just became an auto buy author for me! I am not a very emotional person and books very very rarely make me cry, but she got me good with both books in this series.
There is a deep exploration of grief, the unbidden quest to right wrongs and the parallels between the people with power and the ones that are next to invisible in the same world is drawn so well by the author.
It was almost a 5 star but I was little frustrated with the pacing in the middle for a few chapters. It got a little slow for me after a twist was shared, but it quickly picked back up and I was flipping thru pages at lightning speed!
Can we also talk about the covers of the books in this series, HOLY they are breathtaking!
Randi Garner, I don't know where you have been but PLEASE keep writing, I have an unquenchable thirst for your writing!

What really sold Even in Death for me was Finnian and Cassian — two deeply flawed, powerful gods who feel heartbreakingly real. Finnian, the necromancer, is dominated by guilt and family loyalty (especially toward his father), and his desperation to set things right made me root for him hard. Cassian, the High God of Death and Curses, comes off as cold and unforgiving, but Garrett peels back his layers so well — he’s wounded, vengeful, but also desperately afraid of losing Finnian again.
There’s also Naia, Finnian’s sister, whose shadow looms over Finnian’s decisions and adds emotional weight to his sacrifice. And then there’s the High Goddess of Fate, whose centuries-old rivalry with Cassian casts a long, painful shadow — you can feel how much history they share, and how that fuels both the curse and the tension.
The dual-timeline structure helps a lot: seeing Finnian and Cassian’s past gives context to their actions in the present, and you slowly understand why Cassian’s so unforgiving — and why Finnian is so determined to redeem himself. Their growth felt earned. Some of the side characters don’t get as much development, but the core relationships are so good.
Overall, I loved how emotionally complex they are. 4.5 stars for the character depth, the pain, and the way their past and present collide in such a meaningful way.

This is the best book I have read so far this year. Nothing I say will be eloquent enough to describe how much I love this story and these characters. To say I was highly anticipating Even in Death after the gem that was The Goddess Of would be an understatement. I already loved Finnian and the ending of book one made me absolutely ecstatic for Cassian and Finnian’s story. This book went above and beyond my expectations. The first book had a ton of jaw dropping moments and plot twists, but I think Randi Garner definitely outdid herself with this one. I was absolutely hooked on this book and couldn’t have put it down if I tried. I already knew the vibes were gonna be immaculate because the main characters are a necromancer and the god of death. But I wasn’t anticipating the heartbreakingly beautiful story between these two, woven into their lifelong feud. This had amazing disability and mental health rep and was handled so well. I don’t have enough time in the world to tell you how much I loved the romance, but just know this is one of my new all time favorite couples. I can’t wait to read more from this series and this author. I will be on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book (especially after the foreshadowing epilogue).

I love this series!! I had no idea what to expect going into the first book and ended up LOVING it - and the author was kind enough to give me an ARC of Even in Death.

…And it exceeded expectations! Finnian is one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever read and I loved every moment of his story. The magic and mythos of this world are incredibly built too.

First off I need to say how incredibly thankful I am to have read this ARC. I also got to read with my besties @bookchisme + @bookishwanahi. To say we loved this series is and understatement. We found our new auto buy author 🖤

Even in Death is book 2 of The Fragile Divine series. The Goddess Of is book 1 and it is just as spectacular as book 2.

Even in Death follows Finnian in Cassian’s Land of the Dead. Throughout the story Finnian is trying to break his curse & right some wrongs. This book embodies the true Enemies to lovers. It’s dark, deep and done to perfection. Finnian & Cassian are beautiful 🖤

The vibes & tropes you get in Even In Death:

🥀High Gods + Goddesses
🍃Enemies to Lovers
🥀Witchcraft + curses
🍃MM Romance (chefs kiss btw)
🥀Morally Grey MMC
🍃Cinnamon Roll MMC
🥀Dual POV + Dual Timelines
🍃Slow Burn
🥀Hearing impaired representation

Again thank you, thank you Randi!! 🖤🥀

This book change my whole view on death I am no longer afraid and that it is apart of life. and I know it's just a story but damn.

Some of my favorite quotes

"Death is not about separation. Finnian smiled to himself. Death is about peace."

"“Love is death,” Cassian whispered, holding him close. “But death is love again.”"

"uncaring of those caught in its wake. “You do not have to understand it,” Cassian said. “You just have to find a way to make peace with it.”
Trust him. Like you always have."

"“Wherever you go, I am with you. Always.”"

"“Death is peace, Finnian, and pain is simply a sign of love’s presence.”"

“I am not strong enough to face you when you despise me. Even if it is only temporary.” “You have before.” “Not after knowing what it is like to love you.”

Holy gods and goddesses I am blown away…this book is IMMACULATE! ♾️⭐️s!! It does a deep dive into grief, power imbalances, righting wrongs, deep and meaningful love, family bonds, death, life & finding joy in the small moments. Randi’s writing speaks to my soul…it’s poetic, dark and freaking beautiful. The disability and mental health rep is written with such care. The opposites attract, true enemies to lovers but with a twist of time and fate was so unique and fun to read. A necromancer who steals souls from a god of death…what a combo! The plot twists absolutely had me reeling and my jaw on the floor. Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this book and Randi is absolutely a top tier author for me now!

** I was provided with an ARC by the author, thank you so much for the opportunity! **

Finnian has traded places with his sister to be imprisoned by the High God, Cassian, as a punishment. Everything we think we know about the cruel God will be questioned while we travel between the past and the present to learn of a love that has been tested and tortured. Finnian fights his captor while struggling to keep control of his mind being riddled by a Curse. He seeks to free his Father while protecting Naia and his nephew.

An unveiled history between Cassian and Finnian will make you rethink every action and interaction between the two. We get to meet other Gods and Goddesses, learn where the first Gods and Goddess came from, and what led to the current events from The Goddess Of and Even in Death. Bring tissues!

I loved seeing Naia and her family again, and just like The Goddess Of: the pain and journey is worth it in the end!

REPRESENTATION: I am hearing impaired and have hearing aids. I have about 40% loss on the left, 90% on the right, and a prosthetic that didnt work. I was shocked and amazed at the great representation of a hearing impaired character that doesn't/can't use magic to heal himself, but creates a hearing aid that still shows the struggle of using one. Every time I read where Finnian could only hear/understand parts of a sentence or the background noise was too loud and distracting to stay in his conversation, I felt seen! He talks about the crystal hearing aid taking an adjustment period to be comfortable and manageable. He talks about feedback and discomfort and how the device isn't perfect. I absolutely LOVED being represented this way! Too many disabled characters are healed by magic, or a hearing impaired character is just straight deaf with no loss of hearing shown. This is the first time I've ever seen or read a hearing impaired character that felt so right. I immediately called my sister to gush over how cool it was! Great job!

(4.25/5) I just KNEW I'd fall in love with Finnian and Cassian.

What to expect:
🖤 Dark fantasy romance
🖤 3rd person, dual POV
🖤 Witchcraft & magic
🖤 Angst & yearning
🖤 MM romance
🖤 Dual timelines

Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️

Even in Death is a dark romantasy that puts you through hell (pun intended). The push and pull between these two? Fantastic. The angst? Through the roof. The YEARNING? I was sat.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Even in Death after we briefly met these characters in The Goddess Of–all I knew is that these two were at each others throats and I was here for it. I didn't find this book overly predictable and enjoyed the way Randi Garner chose to develop these characters.

The beginning of this book started off strong with the cat & mouse dynamic, which I flew through. It made me believe in the chemistry between these two while also showing the relatable imperfections in both characters.

I can see some readers feeling uncomfortable with the toxic moments between the characters, but I actually like that it reinforces that they are gods and not humans. Their dynamic and personalities are very fitting for this world where gods fight for power. It's actually the moments of kindness that reveals they're not that far away from humanity.

I didn't give this book a full five stars primarily due to the pacing and the execution of the past and present timelines. In my opinion, they were a bit choppy at times and they could've flowed better.

Overall, really enjoyed this book and I'd consider it within my top 10 indie reads of the year so far.

The ending has me SOOOOOO excited for Ache of Chaos. These covers just keep getting better and better.

A sincere thank you to Randi Garner for gifting me a physical copy of Even in Death!

It's been 3 days since I finished Even in Death and I simply cannot. I'm terrible at writing reviews; I can never find the right words when all that is in my head when I finish a book is "holy fcking shit that was amazing" (Which btw is 100% how I feel about this book, but times 1000) I'm not the kind of person who will give a recap or overview, because that's why we have blurbs, but I will say that The Fragile Divine series is DEFINITELY making my top reads of the year.

Even in Death was a beautiful, amazing story about separation and the only eternal thing in life, love. The way this book broke my heart and then pieced it back together. Finnian and Cassian's relationship was absolutely everything and watching it develop throughout the story was breathtaking. Randi Garner is a wonderful writer and I don't even have the words to describe how obsessed I am with these characters and this world. I love a gut wrenching book, a book that makes me FEEL, and Even in Death delivered!!

"There is impact," Cassian whispered in his ear. "Impact on those who touch our lives. You came into mine and I haven’t been the same since. The time we were apart, you remained etched deep in my soul, Finny. That is what it means to live, to love."

Suffice to say I loved the first one, I LOVED the second one, and I can't wait for whatever's next. If you enjoy dual POV; dual timelines, witchy/gothic/magical vibes, extremely interesting world building and pantheon, slow burn, and beautiful love stories then I highly HIGHLY recommend Even in Death, and the Fragile Divine series in general.

Please check TWs before reading, your mental health is important <3

Even In Death ARC Review
The Fragile Divine # 2

⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟 4.89 rounded up
🌶️🌶️

If “I loathe you” followed immediately by “I long for you” sounds like your kind of romance… welcome. 🥀

If Manacled had gods + necromancy + gothic horror + an MM enemies-to-lovers romance + an absolutely unreasonable amount of emotional damage. 🥀💀

⚠️ Potential spoilers for The Goddess Of ⬇️

📘 Even in Death is the kind of romantasy that understands that the most dangerous thing about immortality isn't dying—it's having centuries to regret the people you've lost. Randi Garner takes the gods, curses, necromancy, and mythology established in The Goddess Of and pushes them into something considerably darker and more intimate, centering Finnian and Cassian's tangled history rather than simply expanding the external fantasy conflict. The result is a story where the mythology provides the skeleton, but grief, guilt, forgiveness, obsession, and love provide the beating heart.

Even in Death isn't really interested in asking “Can these characters survive?” Its more interesting question is “What happens when surviving means continuing to carry everything you've ever lost?” Garner takes an already-established mythology and uses gods, curses, necromancy, death, and immortality as vehicles for a deeply human story about grief, guilt, forgiveness, and the terrifying vulnerability of loving someone who has the power to destroy you.

The book's biggest strength is the Finnian/Cassian relationship: their centuries of history make the romance feel emotionally enormous, while the dual timeline lets the reader slowly understand why their hatred and longing are so intertwined. If you want your romantasy to leave you emotionally wrecked rather than merely entertained—and especially if dark MM enemies-to-lovers + gothic mythology + necromancy + devastating yearning sounds like a winning combination—this is very much that book. No spoilers but their relationship took me on quite the vast, intense emotional journey.

Even in Death is a character-first dark romantasy where the mythology, magic, and plot exist largely to intensify the emotional relationship at its center. The book is the second installment of The Fragile Divine and is intended to be read in order.

Thank you to @ Randi Garner for the opportunity to read this eARC. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and freely given.

[I am so very sorry for how late this review is, Randi. 🫶🏼 I'm beyond excited for Ache of Chaos, and Wildfire Dreaming for that matter. ]

Greek-mythology-inspired gods + necromancy + gothic horror + centuries of unfinished business + captive/captor tension + MM enemies-to-lovers + dual timelines + devastating yearning = Even in Death

📓 Synopsis:
Imprisoned in the Land of the Dead, necromancer Finnian must outwit Cassian, the High God of Death and Curses, while racing against a curse that threatens his mind. But centuries of hostility and a tangled history between them begin to blur the line between hatred and something far more dangerous. Even in Death is the second book in The Fragile Divine and must be read after The Goddess Of.

Thank you @ Randi Garner for the opportunity to read this eARC. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and freely given.

📖 Plot 4.75
The plot is deliberately emotion-driven rather than twist-driven. Finnian's imprisonment and attempts to escape/right past wrongs provide the immediate narrative engine, but the real momentum comes from uncovering the history between Finnian and Cassian and understanding how their present circumstances are connected to their past.

The dual-timeline construction is particularly effective because the past isn't simply exposition—it changes how you interpret the present. As pieces of their relationship emerge, earlier interactions acquire additional emotional weight.

The middle is more contemplative or relationship-focused. That section gives you a lot of important character/relationship development as well. While I enjoyed this section immensely, it was a bit on the slower side for me.

And that final third! I was on the edge of my seat, truly. I didn't know what was going to happen and had some big fears (cautious in my wording here so as to not inadvertently spoil anythint). I was already excited to read Ache of Chaos but now I want to read it immediately.

➕
• Emotional devastation
• Layered relationship
• Reveals
• Dual timeline, used effectively
• High stakes

➖
• Some middle-section slowing

✨ Occasionally the romance takes precedence over the external plot - I loved this and since it's a romance I think this is a pro.

🧵Themes & Deeper Meaning 5
The obvious thematic question is:
What survives death?

Garner uses that question to explore love, grief, guilt, forgiveness, identity, sacrifice, and the possibility of redemption.

Death isn't merely a fantasy setting—it becomes a metaphor for endings that aren't actually endings. Relationships can die and still exert enormous power over the living. Old wounds can remain psychologically alive centuries after the event that created them.
There's also a fascinating tension between immortality and emotional vulnerability. These characters are gods, but godhood doesn't make them emotionally invulnerable. If anything, living for centuries means carrying an almost incomprehensible accumulation of grief and regret.

A real-world parallel can be found in the way people carry unresolved relationships and trauma long after the original event has ended. The book exaggerates that idea through immortal beings: what happens when you literally cannot outlive your past?

➕
•Emotional depth
• Existential questions
• Symbolism of death/love
• Grief
• Redemption

✍🏼 Prose 5
Garner's prose is lush, evocative, emotionally heightened, and atmospheric.

She isn't writing minimalist romantasy. The prose frequently leans into the gothic qualities of the setting, using sensory and emotionally charged descriptions to make the Land of the Dead feel oppressive and otherworldly.
Importantly, the heightened prose generally fits the subject matter. The characters aren't ordinary people having ordinary problems; they're supernatural beings carrying centuries of history. The almost mythic quality of the language reinforces that scale beautifully.

The dialogue is strongest when it becomes weaponized intimacy—characters who know exactly which emotional buttons to push because they've known one another for an extraordinarily long time.

Dual POVs also help distinguish the emotional perspectives of the protagonists, although the strongest differentiation comes from their attitudes and internal responses rather than radically different prose styles. Garner masterfully weaves the past and present together in a way that I've thought on for days but can't find the words (but it's so well done 😅).

➕
• Poetic prose
• Atmosphere
• Emotional dialogue
• Yearning
• Memorable lines

⏳ Pacing 4.5
Primarily character-driven with a strong plot framework. This isn't a book where something explodes every fifty pages to maintain momentum. Its pacing is built around emotional revelations, relationship development, and gradually understanding the past.

The dual timelines naturally create a stop-start rhythm: present-day conflict moves forward while past scenes provide additional context.

For readers invested in Finnian and Cassian, like me, this makes the pacing feel deliberate and suspenseful. For me, my investment in Finny and Cassian's relationship made it emotionally relentless in the best way. My poor heart was all over the place with these two.
For readers primarily interested in the broader fantasy conflict, some of those slower relationship-focused sections may feel like detours.

➕
• Slow burn
• Gradual reveals
• Emotional tension
• Past/present interplay

➖
• Middle-section drag
• Less emphasis on external action

🗺️ Worldbuilding 5
The worldbuilding becomes substantially broader than in the first book. Layers, lore, and richness are woven in delicately and effectively.

Rather than simply presenting gods and supernatural beings as part of a fantasy backdrop, Even in Death takes readers deeper into the Land of the Dead, divine hierarchy, gods, curses, mythology, and the origins/history of the supernatural world. We don't spend as much time in the urban parts of the world as we did in The Goddess Of.

This is one of the book's strengths because the fantasy isn't just decorative. The mythology directly affects the characters' relationships and the rules governing their lives.

A particularly effective element is that the world feels like it existed before the story arrived. There are old conflicts, hierarchies, grudges, powers, and relationships that don't exist solely to facilitate the current plot.

➕
• Land of the Dead
• Mythology
• Divine hierarchy
• Lore
• Expanding universe

🪄 Magic System 5
The magic is essentially a mythological supernatural system built around gods, divine powers, witchcraft, curses, necromancy, souls, and supernatural hierarchy.

The most interesting aspect isn't necessarily that every magical ability has a rigidly quantified set of rules. Instead, magic is deeply tied to identity and domain: powerful supernatural beings embody particular concepts/powers, while witches and necromancers interact with supernatural forces differently. I found this all so interesting.

Finnian's necromancy and Cassian's association with death and curses are particularly effective because their powers aren't random abilities—they reinforce their characterization and the central thematic conflict.

Rather than pages of exposition, Garner deliberately withholds some information to effectively expand the magical mythology over time rather than explaining everything immediately. I thoroughly enjoyed this approach, that the magic, gods, and politics continue to expand and add layers throughout out the story.

➕
• Necromancy
• Curses
• Gods
• Supernatural hierarchy
• Mythology

🎒 Series Integration 5
You know how some later books series' will end up making you love the preceding book(s) more? Even In Death did that for me - I love The Goddess Of (TGO) more now. This book had tie-ins, lore, and links to TGO that, for me, served well to elevate TGO. It made certain things in TGO more impactful, and deepened it, give things a more richer, more vivid emotional tone.

This is excellent as a second-book strategy.
Rather than simply continuing the exact same protagonists from The Goddess Of, Garner shifts the central romantic focus to Finnian and Cassian while retaining the larger world and continuing the overarching story.

That allows the series to function almost like an interconnected collection of fantasy romances within a single expanding romantasy universe.

Crucially, the first book isn't discarded. Characters and consequences from The Goddess Of remain relevant, while Even in Death fills in additional pieces of the world's mythology and supernatural hierarchy. Getting Finny and Cassian POVs allowed the world naturally as well as the cast to expand while maintaining a larger, overarching conflict.

I'm so incredibly excited to read Ache of Chaos, The Fragile Divine book 3.

➕
• New protagonists
• Returning characters
• Expanding mythology
• Iterconnected romances
• Larger stakes

👥 Character Development 4.75
Finnian and Cassian aren't interesting simply because they're powerful gods. They're interesting because their power exists alongside enormous emotional weaknesses.

Finnian's guilt, loyalty, desperation, and history shape his decisions. Cassian's hallmark coldness and vengeance conceal considerably more vulnerability.

Their characterization benefits enormously from the dual timeline because readers don't simply hear that these characters have history—they experience pieces of that history alongside them. The result is a gradual reframing of both characters.

Both are deeply flawed and emotional complex characters whose past and present help explain their behavior. They're real and viscerally raw in their vulnerability.

Some secondary characters receive less development than I wanted, but I suspect we'll get at least some of that development in Ache of Chaos. We get enough development that they aren't flat, I just would've preferred a bit more depth with a few secondary characters.

➕
• Emotional complexity
• Flaws
• Vulnerability
• Character contrast
• Believable growth

➖
• Some secondary characters don't quite have the depth I prefer.

🖤 Romance 5
Finnan and Cassian are undoubtedly the emotional core. There's a vast depth to their relationship - so much history. And the chemistry is excellent. I loved watching their relationship grow and evolve over the course of the book. The slow burn draws the tension out in a delicious manner.

Finnian and Cassian's relationship works because the romance isn't simply “they hate each other, then suddenly they're attracted.” Their history gives the attraction context, baggage, resentment, longing, and consequences. And oh how they tugged my emotions in all the directions.

The enemies-to-lovers dynamic is therefore doing actual narrative work. Their relationship is simultaneously:
attraction + resentment + history + guilt + grief + longing + mistrust + vulnerability

The captive/captor setup also creates a significant power imbalance, which means the relationship isn't conventionally healthy during every stage of its development. That's part of the book's dark-romance identity rather than something the story glosses over as an uncomplicated romance. It isn't treated as if the power imbalance didn't exist or matter, nor as a wholly healthy adult romantic relationship. It's handled thoughtfully, with care, while maintaining its dark romance roots.

The emotional progression is particularly effective because the reader gradually learns why these two people matter so much to each other. Same with why they loathe one another.

➕
• Enemies-to-lovers
• Yearning
• Chemistry
• Emotional history
• Slow burn
• Vulnerability
• Angst

🌶️ Spice 5
It's open door with maybe a handful of explicit scenes. I'd say it's moderately spicy, feels earned, and fits the story/characters.

The sexual content is meaningfully integrated into the larger romantic arc rather than existing simply as standalone spice or gratuitous, with the emotional relationship remaining considerably more important than the physical encounters.

The book's strongest erotic charge comes from the enormous amount of anticipation, tension, yearning, and emotional vulnerability surrounding the relationship.

➕
• Open-door
• Chemistry
• Emotional intimacy
• Tension
• Payoff after a slow burn

📚 Read if you enjoyed these comps:

BIPOC Comp
The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera

If you liked The Saint of Bright Doors for its strange gods + supernatural forces + complicated relationships with divinity + questions about fate and free will, then I think you'd enjoy Even in Death for its much more romance-forward take on those ideas. 🥀⚔️ Both turn divine power into something deeply personal—and dangerous.

Queer Comp
Angels & Man by Rafael Nicolás

If you liked Angels & Man for queer mythology + MM romance + angels + dark fantasy + hate-to-love tension, then I think you'd enjoy Even in Death for its gods + curses + necromancy + enemies-to-lovers obsession. 🖤🥀 Basically: divine beings, terrible decisions, and way too many feelings.

Indie Comp
The Prince's Poisoned Vow by Hailey Turner

If you liked The Prince's Poisoned Vow for MM fantasy + powerful supernatural forces + political intrigue + magic + complicated loyalties, then I think you'd enjoy Even in Death for a darker, more gothic version of that cocktail. ⚔️🖤 Expect dangerous magic, complicated men, and feelings that absolutely should have been left alone.

Non-Big Five Comp
Fool Me Twice by Ariana Nash

If you liked Fool Me Twice for dark MM romance + morally gray characters + betrayal + political scheming + vengeance + angst, then I think you'd enjoy Even in Death for an even more gothic, supernatural, enemies-to-lovers spin on those ingredients. 🥀🔥 Come for the fantasy politics, stay for the absolutely catastrophic yearning.

Big Five Comp
A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland

If you liked A Taste of Gold and Iron for queer fantasy romance + political intrigue + emotional angst + dangerous power structures, then I think you'd enjoy Even in Death if you want to take those ingredients somewhere much darker, more gothic, and more supernatural. 🖤 Think political tension turned into gods, curses, necromancy, and enemies who really need to stop wanting each other.

Indirect Comp
Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune

If you liked Under the Whispering Door for queer romance + death/afterlife themes + supernatural beings + exploring what makes a life meaningful, then I think you'd enjoy Even in Death for a much darker, more dramatic interpretation of those same existential questions. 🕯️🥀 Same preoccupation with death and love—just replace the cozy tea shop with curses, gods, necromancy, and suffering.

I had the pleasure of being able to beta read EiD as a sensitivity reader. (Finnian has one-sided hearing loss like me!)

And let me tell you, I ate it up! I was so excited for this book because I really liked The Goddess Of - I thought it was such a unique world of gods/mortals- And I particularly like Cassian, so, I was excited to get his story. And can emphatically say that it exceeded my expectations! It was so beautifully written. Cassian and Finnian’s journeys were agonizingly emotional (I mean that as the very best compliment). And the way it wrapped up took me by surprise, but was so satisfying.

I loved the dual timelines in this book. Cassian continues to be my favorite. And of course, Finny will always hold a special place in my heart ❤️ it really was so impactful to see my condition represented in a character in this way.

If you haven’t read The Goddess Of yet, you need to read that first before you read this one. But if you like brutal gods, high stakes, deep love and devotion, and a morally grey MC who is a secret cinnamon roll, then you will love Even in Death!

AUDIOBOOK VERSION (APRIL 2025)
I knew this audiobook was going to put me out of commission for a while... and I was right! ALL THE FEELINGS! There is just something about having the auditory experience of one of your favorite books. I laughed, I cried, I gasped a lot. Randi's writing is absolutely incredible, and to hear it with the wonderful vocal talent we were blessed with was out of this world. I could so perfectly see the characters with their voices; the switches between accents and the dual narration was phenomenally well done. I will absolutely cherish this audiobook and am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to have an early listen! Thank you to Dreamscape Media, Randi Garner and Netgalley!

KINDLE VERSION (FEBRUARY 2025)
5/5⭐️
1/5🌶️

When we last left him, Finnian had offered himself in place of his sister, Naia, to be Cassian’s prisoner. Stuck in Moros, Cassian’s prison, for the foreseeable future, we witness the torment Cassian has in store for Finnian. Simultaneously, we are thrown into the past, seeing how Cassian and Finnian have interacted throughout the story told in The Goddess Of, but this time through Cassian and Finnian’s POVs. As we witness two stories unfold over different times, in the present Finnian’s time is running short. Having been cursed by Cassian he seems to slowly be losing his grasp on reality. Coupled with a giant hole in his memories, Finnian fears he may not be able to save Naia and her child from being hunted.

I’m almost speechless after finishing this story. Randi is one of the most gifted authors I have had the pleasure of reading, winding together an overarching heartbreaking story with beautiful descriptors and characters. I’m shattered! But she still managed to piece me back together! Cassian is my baby… what he went through during this story absolutely obliterated me. I just want to hold him! And Finny’s journey with his family and with love were also gut-wrenching, yet absolutely beautiful! I absolutely adore this series and will highly recommend to everyone. I can’t wait to see what Randi comes up with next!

What I Loved About This Story:
✨Hate & animosity; enemies to lovers… to enemies?
✨High gods & goddesses and mortals
✨Witchcraft, spells and curses
✨Dual POV and dual timeline
✨MM romance that was absolute perfection
✨Interwoven story with the previous book in the series, The Goddess of

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book via the author, but my review is all my own.

Randi Garner's writing is STUNNING. And she created absolute magic with it once again!

This second book in the Fragile Divine series (once again auto-conclusive) tells the story of Finnian and Cassian, two gods whose fates seem to have been entwined for the longest time in a feud that keeps bringing them back to each other.

I adored the way the author slowly peeled back layers of these characters, brought their emotions to the page so tangibly, wove their stories masterfully and made the reader ache for them right from the start. The world-building was evocative, the story catchy and the romance so compelling. I loved Finnian and Cassian together!

And I'm so glad we got a little glimpse of my favourite Goddess and Mage from the previous book. That's always such a cool thing about interconnected books!

What to expect from Even In Death?
🌹 Fate
🖤 Magic
🌹 Slow burn
🖤 Gothic vibes
🌹 Queer love (MM)
🖤 Dual timeline & dual POV
🌹 Disability rep (hearing loss)
🖤 Morally grey & cinnamon roll
🌹 High God of Death and Curses x High God of Witchcraft and Sorcery

⚠️ Make sure you read the trigger warnings, which include quite graphic violence & torture (something I realised I quite struggle to read).

I'd highly recommend this series to any lovers of romantic fantasy, mythological settings and some darker vibes!

EDITED 6⭐!

STOP WHAT U ARE READING AND PICK UP THIS INSTEAD! The way this book made me feel feelings again was not even joke. I never felt so emotional and full of tears before and I'm not even someone who cries over sth emotional. Every time Cassian shed tears my heart crumbled in my chest. My baby boy Finnian finally made his wrongs right and learned death was not a miserable thing. Actually, it made me feel more light about death too. They both deserve to be happy and waste in tangled sheets together with Alke by their side. I'm so very glad that I discovered these books and had the privilege to read them. Idk why but, mm romances touch my heart deeper than normal ones. Maybe I just enjoy seeing two men cry and yearn for each other and put their egos aside.
Randi Garner has officially become one of my top favorite authors. I will read everything she writes.
Please make these books and couples popular on social media ASAP. I need to see them everywhere.
And my deepest love for Finnian. I adore and care every single thing about him. Especially his long wavy strands and emerald green eyes. Words just not enough how I feel about him. I was also glad to Naia with her new powers and family. A book was not enough for me. I need more of Finny and Cassius🫂🌿❤️⛓️

This is my first book by Garver. I happened to see it in a booksta post and something called to me, so I picked it up.

Holy moly am I glad I did. The first part of the book is told in alternating past and present. It read pretty seamlessly and didn’t hinder the story. We follow Finnian and Cassian, both gods who view death in a very different light.

There’s enemies to lovers vibes through the first part and a bit of a slow burn but it helped to build the story. The mythos and world building was absolutely top tier, very deep and complex web built but delightful to read.

I was not expecting the ending. At all. The way she took the story and emotionally drove it, was amazing. I truly loved how she wrapped it up and ended the story for Finny and Cassian.

There is a bit of spice but it’s pretty mild and barely open door, but still very good. Overall I am so glad I read this.

I fear there will never be a day where a book written by Randi Garner doesn’t make me sob uncontrollably over its depth and beauty. Even In Death was both breathtaking and heart-wrenching — Cassian and Finnian’s story was absolutely everything. ✨💕

From the start, I just knew Cassian’s perspective was misunderstood… and my goodness, “misunderstood” doesn’t even scratch the surface. His story shattered me in the most beautiful way.

Finnian’s healing arc was so genuine, raw, and real. The love he had for his people ran so deep, and the desperation he felt at their losses — his willingness to sacrifice himself — cut me to the core. He was such a complex soul who finally got the ending he deserved, and watching that unfold was devastating in the best way.

Garner’s narrative structure was so cleverly woven — beginning in the present and slowly unraveling the past through carefully placed glimpses. It deepened my connection to these characters in a way that felt effortless and intentional. The ending? That’s where I completely fell apart. It was stunning. I had to physically pause and collect myself — breathing through the ache in my chest. Garner’s descriptive writing placed me right there beside them, grieving and ugly crying.

But what truly wrecked me was the symbolism — what she built through the layers of grief, healing, and love left me in awe. It was powerful and unforgettable.

The writing is evocative and poetic in all the best ways. Garner has a gift for making you feel everything right alongside the characters. I was completely immersed from the first page to the last. This story will forever be embedded in my heart and mind. It was everything a book should be. Bravo, Randi. Bravo.

A huge thank you to Randi, NetGalley, and Dreamscape Media for this ALC.

“𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯.”

From Book 1, I knew Cassian and Finnian were deeply complex characters. Throughout the book, we witness their encounters over the years and how the time in between has shaped them.

The narrative poignantly explores concepts of sacrifice, redemption, death, and the burden of immortality. Amidst the intense yearning, devastating reveals, and painful losses is a soul-stirring love story.

With lush prose, heart wrenching romance, and hope of new beginnings, Even in Death is a story that is captivating and devastating in the best way.

Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
