Agent Jasmine Len was more than just the assistant to the deputy director, she was his right hand woman. No one knew more about the new division of the FBI she and the director were creating.
That knowledge made her more than just an assistant--it made her the next target…and only one man can protect her now.
Agent Dakon Royal was fiercely loyal to the deputy director, and he'd do anything to keep the director--and the director's beautiful, intriguing, and maddening personal assistant--safe from the traitor in the division's midst.
Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.
That was a nice, short lil something. I can’t say it was anything impressive but it did the trick. I probably would have enjoyed that more had a read it nearer to the time I read the other books but hey ho. For what it was, it was pretty decent. It was able to maintain its integrity while being so short which was nice to see. The characters didn’t particularly do anything for me - they were pretty bog standard- but I had an okay time nonetheless.
These books have been on my TBR list for so long and all I can say is I am sorry I did not read them earlier, and I am hoping the rest of the books in the series turn out to be just as decent as this one.
Beginning~ PAVAD: FBI Romantic Suspense tells how the new unit in the St. Louis office of the FBI got its start and the threat to the Director of the office and his assistant Jasmine Len. With the help of SSA Agent Dakon Royal they quickly realise the attempt on the Director and Len are coming from an agent within their St. Louis office.
Quickly they work through the five most likely suspects and with the help of the rest of Agent Royal's team the capture the rogue agent and the funding and planning come together for the new unit. I love the details, the budding romance and efficiency of how the agents worked together and supported each other while protecting the public. It is a great prequel to a great series.
I received this e-book free from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing an honest review. Jasmine Len FBI and personnel assistant to Deputy Director Ed Dennis call Dakon Royal FBI when an attempt was made on both of their lives one night. Together Dakon and Jasmine work to catch the culprit and protect deputy director while flirtting with their mutual attraction. What I do not care for in this book is the build up to catch the criminal and then the immediate drop with no follow thru as to why when he is caught. Another disappointing aspect is the may misspelled words throughout that editing and proof reading would have caught.
This prequel should!d definitely be read before book one. It provides Insight into how PAVAD came to be, about Agent Jasmine Len and her relationship and value to director Edward Dennis, as well as get blooming relationship with Agent Damon Royal. It I'd a great set up to book one and those following it.
If you enjoy the PAVAD series, this is a basic couple of chapters describing some problems getting the unit set up. There is actually more sexual harassment verbiage than story line. Not worth buying.
Beginning was a short novella that couldn't really decide what it was. Is it a romance, a suspense, a "mystery", is it an introductory story to a series? It tried to be all these things and it didn't work. It had potential, but there was no follow through. It was like reading an outline of what could've been a more interesting, or at the very least more complete story.
It starts off with a familiar premise, character(s) being targeted by the bad guys, and then hero is of course called in to help investigate and protect. Familiar trope, that when executed properly can be a really good read. Not executed appropriately...I felt really detached from the story and the writing. I didn't feel suspense or anything really emotionally evocative for most of it. It felt like a really flat read, one-toned and disappointing.
It's a novella so I don't expect a lot, I don't expect elaborate plots or deep characterization and romantic development. That being said it's still disappointing when you get none of it. They didn't really get a chance to form full characters, or a chance to really get to know each other, we didn't get a whole lot of romance because of the "danger". But the "danger" never felt dangerous. There were too many characters being introduced in such a novella which detracted more from the story. And then the main plot was never actually wrapped up. . It felt like it just ended abruptly, like the author just decided that's that and walked away without any proper wrap up.
"Beginning" is a short prequel novella to start the new series PAVAD: FBI - Prevention & Analysis of Violent Acts Division by Calle J. Brookes. Agent Jasmine Len is the assistant to the deputy director of the FBI, and she is helping the Director with the new division he is organising. However, they realise there is a traitor in the St Louis office and are out to kill Jasmine and the Director. Income Agent Dakon Royal to protect them both. Beginning readers will continue to follow Agent Jasmine Len and Agent Dakon Royal to find out what happens.
"Beginning" is a fantastic start to this excellent series. From the start, "Beginning" ensured I enjoyed reading this book and engaged with the characters and plot. I love Calle J. Brookes's portrayal of her characters and how they interact throughout this book. "Beginning" is well written and researched by Calle J. Brookes. I like Calle J. Brookes's description of the settings of "Beginning" that complemented the book's plot.
The readers of "Beginning" will understand the consequences of making a mistake for a Law enforcement officer. The readers of "Beginning" will find out the work behind the scenes to develop new programs for the FBI.
There were two things which kept me from giving this book 5 stars. There were a couple major typos which I had to stop and chuckle over. And in chapter two, the hero cussed. But as I kept reading through the next couple chapters, he slowly stopped. I dislike cussing in general. So I’m wondering why not just refrain the whole time? Other than those things, the story was good. It was believable enough. The MCs were a little hard for me to relate to, but they were likable. If you enjoy suspense romance and don’t mind a bit of rough language and some innuendo, you’d probably enjoy it.
This book is consistent with the rest of the author's "Romantic Suspense" books. This one perhaps slightly different as she initially sets up two possible romantic scenarios, but as usual it is the relationship with tensions that rises to the top.
Certainly more romance than suspense, which seems to exist to provide the reader with relief from the abrupt nature of the romantic dialog. Definitely not the suave romance, look elsewhere for that, but it is a nice read to have in-between other stories.
I hadn't ever tried this author but romantic suspense is a favorite genre. While this book could use some editing, I liked it overall. The characters, mostly were developed, even the ones mentioned in passing. There was a bit of cliche and the romance was a bit too insta but that happens sometimes in romantic suspense and especially novella. I have a few more books in this series, also freebies, and will probably read on a bit more.
I was bothered by a couple grammatical errors, a typo, and overuse of a word (b******d). That may be picky, but that and the sometimes awkward narrative disrupted the flow for me like bumps in the road. It was a very fast read, I enjoyed the suspense and the romance aspect. I did purchase the second book of this series, so we'll see if there is an improvement in the writer's presentation.
This is such an easy read. So surprising that I looked for the author's other books. I have quite begun any of the others because I am still savoring the story. I finished some time ago, but the book still brings a smile to my face. The suspense was so enthralling which made the romance even more special. Ms. Brookes has nailed it so well.
Read it. Enjoy! And savor her words, plot's twist, and turns of the story. It's summer almost, think of this candy for your brain.
I liked the banter between the two main characters but the resolution was a little rushed… almost like the author was tied to a number of words, for this little taste of the what the PAVAD world will become. Frankly, both the main character were a little antagonistic towards each other at first but they soon understood each other’s strengths. I liked Len and that everyone underestimated her every time.
A short prequel giving insight to the beginnings of a new proposed division of the FBI. An introduction to the Deputy Director and his Assistant who designed, developed and will be heading up the new unit; with also some of the key players. Well written and very intriguing.
This is very short. More romance than suspense it is the prequel to the PAVAD series. It is predictable and unbelievable. The motivation for the crimes is unconvincing. For law enforcement professionals these agents know no boundaries, are overly familiar and treat their office like a speed dating venue. Not a good start.
Brookes can pack a punch in very few words. I loved the interactions between Jasmine and Royal. Throw in the subtle inferences about Ed Dennis and you have a very intriguing beginning to what appears to be a very good new series. I'm thinking I'm going to enjoy reading more about these two.
I really enjoyed the short book that starts the PAVAD series. I also have the next two books in the series as well, and can't wait to read them. I love the characters and hope to read more about them as the series continues. They are thawed, authentic and relatable. I recommend this book. Happy Reading!!!
This was a great short read, this is the first time I have read a book by this author and I was great pleased. The writing is great, the characters are awesome, cant wait to read the rest of the books in this series.
The story had potential, but felt rushed and incomplete. The ending was extremely unsatisfying. It cut off rather abruptly, in a really odd way, like the author just forgot to finish that chapter.
...meh, a case in point as to why I don't read stories this short. I got a bit lost towards the end, it seemed like I missed something. Idk. I would have liked to have read more about this couple, but it is what it is. Hoping that the next book will pick up a bit.
Jasmine Len is assistant to Deputy Director Ed Dennis, and involved with developing a new FBI unit with him. On the way back from a social event they are attacked.
I like a good FBI read full of integer , who's watching , the good guys vs. Bad guy and mix in some chemistry of attention with you partner . I enjoyed the story it kept me turning page after page...
This was a very very short novella. Not exactly my preferred read as it just doesn’t have any space to develop character or atmosphere or build up any decent twist. Taken all this into consideration, this was a sweet intro - and nothing more. Just a longer spinoff into a new book or series.
