Could it be pulled off? By golly could it and more! Chris James is an exceptional new writer to the market and one that I am eager to follow for a long time to come. I LOVED this book! I feel like spinning around and clapping my hands together.
So what has got me so excited? Well, let's start with this great synopsis:
How far would YOU go to bring back a lost love?

Lotions, potions, elixirs and murder, this is what gives us the core of Alchemy, a brilliant murder mystery set in the atmospheric atmosphere of the darker side of Victorian London. I loved the setting, the characters (even the minor players) and most of all the plot which is devilishly delightful and gruesome at times! I could not get enough of this book and devoured it over a few hours. It entertained, shocked, made me laugh (Chris James spins some brilliant witty one liners in his writing that I love) and kept me begging for more.
Imagine loving somebody so much that to get them back you will kill and mess with death itself. Willing to dance with the dark side, seeking a balm for a broken and wounded heart? Chris writes with great enthusiasm, descriptives the delight and has a taste for the macabre that makes this book such a gem. It really was like nothing I have read in a very long time.
Then there is the ending...OH MY GOLLY GOSH, the ending...I could actually feel my heart rate was up, I was holding my breath and reading so fast I thought I might push the words off the page. Brilliant! It left me so hungry for book two, I wanted to just go straight on and read it. This is a truly unique and stunning novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy many book genres.
An easy five paw prints from Booklover Catlady for this treasure of a book. No doubt about it. Stunning.
If you would like a review copy of this fantastic book AND an advance review copy of the sequel you can contact me direct, now that's good news!
I was contacted by the author to see if I would be interested in reading his debut historical murder/mystery literary novel ”Alchemy: A Story of Perfect Murder” by Chris James, in exchange for an honest review. This is the first in a series, with Book II to be released shortly. I have to admit that while I predominately read suspense/murder psychological thrillers, I have had limited exposure to historical fiction. But this novel was a refreshing change and I found myself totally involved in Victorian England setting, the characters and the dialect.
This novel is about an artist/genius, Jacob Silver, the orphan apothecary-turned-alchemist who seeks to revive his dead lover, by using a formula in an ancient tome: “Alchemy”.
Jacob Silver is being tried for multiple murders, five counts of brutal murder of women whom he loved dearly. The very first chapter in this book had me grossed out… a mixture of horror/thriller and courtroom drama with grisly evidence being presented to the court in the form of several headless women, in jars. But I had to remember and reflect on the times, and read on.
But Jacob always swears he did not commit these hideous acts, and professes his innocence. The story switches between Jacob's life up to his arrest and his trial.
This is a well-written novel and well researched plot that will appeal to a variety of readers, with its’ genre mixture. So often I have found that historical fiction can be boring, but not this book. The author is a master storyteller that allows the reader to be involved in the enjoyment of this novel, with all its twists and turns. I enjoyed this novel very much.
Guilty or Not-Guilty? An unexpected twist at the end, that you probably won't see coming.
I bought Alchemy: A Story of Perfect Murder after seeing so many people say they loved it, and I'm pleased to report that I wasn’t disappointed.
I didn’t find it particularly gory. I must be a hardened reader. I was a little concerned it was going to be a little too macabre, based on other comments and reviews. Although this is naturally somewhat dark due to the nature of the subject matter, it turned out to be so much more.
This story has much more depth to it than I anticipated. It is cleverly plotted, with some impressive twists I never saw coming. There is an interesting mix of characters. The attention to detail helped draw me into the story and its surroundings, making this book very atmospheric.
I visited the Victorian Village at Flambards in Cornwall for the first time yesterday. Perfect timing, as it really did bring my recent memories of this book to life. Having read this book a few days before visiting the Victorian Village undoubtedly improved my experience of walking around the museum village yesterday. The sign above the door of the Chemist Time Capsule Shop stating “Prescriptions Accurately Prepared” gave me a giggle as I thought about this book.
Great for lovers of historical murder mystery. I think this would also really appeal to fans of gothic novels, such as Frankenstein. However, this is in no way a retelling of such a story. This is very much a unique story in its own right.
I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series.
I received a copy off the author Chris James in exchange for a frank and honest review. This is a Murder mystery that is very different to the majority of books that are on available and it made a welcome change. If I am been totally honest I found the novel much more exciting and interesting during the first half of the book and felt that the second half was a little less engrossing. That said it is still an excellent read and I am only a little disappointed after such a strong start. The book is well written and the characters are excellently developed and it is hard to believe that this is the authors first novel though I understand he has written screen plays. Looking at other readers positive reviews this book is going to be a great success and I don't really want to detract too much from this very good debut novel. I read with interest that the author plans to write a follow up book which I will look out for.
I have to confess that I love the Victorian novel, either original or a modern-day reworking and when it’s as well done as this, it just can’t go wrong. ‘Alchemy: a psychological thriller of perfect murder’ by Chris James had me hooked from page one. In Victorian England, Jacob Silver is being tried for multiple murders, with grisly evidence being presented to the court in the form of several headless women...
During the course of the trial, the events that led to Jacob's arrest gradually unfold, but is he a mad and delusional psychopath or an unwitting victim in a sinister experiment orchestrated by the secretive professor who sees his genius and tutors him in the ways of alchemy? The novel is so cleverly written that the reader can’t claim to know anything with any certainty until the final pages unfold and for me the pendulum swings back and forth between guilty and innocent many times in the course of the novel.
The author ingeniously weaves the life of Nicolas Flamel, 15th century French alchemist and his wife Perenelle into the narrative, adding an element of plausibility to his tale, since Flamel’s tomb was found to be empty when examined after his death, leading to questions as to whether he did in fact find the secret of immortality and is still alive today....
This was a brilliant read from start to finish - I see that a sequel is on its way; ‘Alchemy: turning silver into gold’, which, if it is anything like the first novel, will be another five-star read!
Thank you to THE Book Club and to Chris James for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! An absolutely amazing book. Spectacular. A real find. If I could give it ten stars I would. One of the best books I have read and I read a lot. I am grateful to the author for writing such a gripping, wonderful, completely absorbing and engrossing book. A lot of research has gone into this book and yet it is not clunky or feels labored, the story flows effortlessly and takes us on a riveting journey. The pacing is excellent, the setting comes alive with the beautiful descriptions. Chris James is a master storyteller who effortlessly transports us into Victorian times, the smells, the crowds, the misery and the glory, via the evocative and dramatic prose. It would make a beautiful movie. Sorcery, Magic, Murder, Science, Art, even a code, there is everything in this book, a tale which defies pigeonholing into genres and which I think will appeal even to the fussiest of readers. Really bow down to the author’s wonderful imagination. The characters have a way of burrowing themselves into the readers' heads. Once I started reading I was ruined for the day. I could not put the book down. It haunted me when I was away from it. It haunts me still. An original, fantastic tale; a masterpiece, by an author to watch. I am recommending this to the world. I am SO glad there is a second installment. Hopefully it is coming soon.
Alchemy - The Story of Perfect Murder by Chris James

This novel is different and fresh from anything I’ve ever read before in this genre with a very gothic feel to it set in the Victorian era. There is a lot of courtroom drama with his trial really keeping my interest, as well as all the horror elements. I thought it was cool that there were severed heads in jars in the courtroom being presented as evidence, this made me laugh out loud. I really thought the courtroom scenes were realistic, aside of course from the talking, severed heads in jars, which was hilarious.
I really enjoyed reading this. It kept my attention throughout, even though it was confusing at times with all the “girls” he loved that he was on trial for murdering that he swears he was not guilty of, also with the flashbacks the way it kept switching scenes. The protagonist was a very interesting, genius/psychopath called Jacob Silver, apothecary turned alchemist, who was taught by an obscure alchemist professor searching for the secret to immortality. It was a very interesting and engrossing read with a lot of very unexpected twists and turns (nothing was really expected with this novel). Overall, it was a fantastic story that was very well-written that definitely made me want to read the second book though, which I most definitely did.
I would like to thank Maxine at Booklover Catlady Publicity with VIP Reviewers for the digital copy to read and review and I apologize for the late entry.
I was pleasantly surprised after reading Alchemy: turning Silver to Gold: - an historical psychological mystery thriller by Chris James. After an excellent debut novel Alchemy: A Story of Perfect Murder I didn't think any sequel could top that, but it definitely did. This was an excellent read, well-written and a brilliant plot with interesting characters. I love historical fiction and thriller/crime/mysteries its my most-read genre and it also had a hint of the supernatural thrown in, so this fell right into my favorite categories. Here is the synopsis:
London ~ 1915
A sensational murder trial begins at the Old Bailey, the accused having apparently been hung for similar shocking murders, in 1895.
How had Jacob Silver escaped the hangman? Where was he, these last 20 years?
Lizzie Weston, his only surviving model, was convinced he was innocent the first time. But after the evidence against him unfolds, she’s convinced he’s guilty this time.
Jacob Silver, having unravelled an ancient recipe in the old tome: Alchemy, is convinced he is immortal, and that’s how he survived the hanging. Improving his skills over the last 20 years, he now claims he can raise the dead.
The prosecution allege he murdered five more women for their souls ~ as Alchemy, the manual of murder prescribes.
But is anything as it seems?
Jacob Silver was sentenced as a serial killer and was sentenced to death by hanging, but now he is missing from his grave. So Lizzie Weston sets out to affirm his immortality and defend his innocence. She wonders if the elixir did its job and made her immortal. I just loved her character. She was so vigorous in her beliefs, strong-willed and intelligent and clearly smitten with Jacob even though her father advises her to leave well-enough alone.
Then we had the courtroom drama again, which was highly entertaining and believable, as well as the forever cackling, decapitated heads in jars. I literally was laughing out loud, this was so original! I love gory and gruesome in my thrillers, the more the better.
I think it is probably advisable to read the debut novel before embarking on this one, as it will make a lot more sense and you will be able to get a background on the characters and prior events.
Ultimately, this was a fantastic, enthralling read and I enjoyed it very much. Chris James left this on a brilliant cliffhanger and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book. These books deserve a lot more attention in my opinion and are very cleverly written. I would like to thank Maxine at Booklover Catlady Publicity and VIP Reviewers for the privilege of reading this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Alchemy:a story of perfect murder is the authors first novel though he has written many screenplays.
The very first chapter in this book had me squirming in my seat due to the content. The story for me is a mixture of horror/thriller and courtroom drama. The story alternates between the trial of Jacob a painter and Alchemist and to events that have lead up to the trial.
The story is set close to the end of the 19th century and a round the same time that Jack the Ripper was alive. I don't really read many stories that are set this far back but I loved the darkness that surrounded the whole story. Even the trial chapters, not being a big fan of legal thrillers, fascinated me. The author for me has got the balance of the trial and the lead up spot on as it works really well.
Quite disturbing in places, Alchemy, literally grabs you from the very first chapter. There are even a few twists especially towards the end. The only character that really stood out to me was Jacob himself. He is a very troubled soul and is very easily mislead. Overall the characters are all believable in their roles and for the timing that the story is set.
The story brought visions of Frankenstein and Jack the Ripper himself to my mind, so I think any fans of these will especially like this book.
Many thanks to the author for allowing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I certainly look forward to reading more of his work.
As one of the reviewers of Booklover Catlady Publicity (BCP), I received a free digital copy of the book from the author and BCP in return for a fair and honest review, and which I promise to deliver.
Tips When Reading This Series:
1. Read Book 1 first, not Book 2 but Book 1. 2. FAIL NOT TO FOLLOW TIP NO.1.
An enthralling series of mystery and suspense, and the things you can do in the name of love. A total must read for those who love historical fiction with a hint of horror and goriness, with a mix of romance in the side.

Despite the 3-star review, this is a great series, believe me. Maybe because I happen to read it backwards, I mean I read the sequel first before this, that I find the later parts of the book a bit boring since the second book explained pretty much everything.
But again, congratulations Mr. Chris James for an amazing series, and as I've said on my last review, I'm looking forward to a third book. *fingers crossed*
Alchemy: a story of perfect murder...where to start?! It has everything, intrigue, romance, suspense, courtroom drama and murder ... All set with the backdrop of 19th century Victorian London.
Jacob Silver is accused of murder in the name of science. The question is did he do it?!
The book alternates between Jacob's life up to his arrest and his trial. The trial is told from what's starts off as the perspective of a mystery observer but as the story progresses, we find out who this is and their part in Jacob's tale.
I felt that I was there in Victorian London and the characters came to life on the page (well kindle screen). I could imagine Jacob at his boarding school, the ladies and gents all in their typical Victorian attire and the barristers presenting their cases in court.
The ending left me wanting more so I am very happy that there is a sequel to come from Chris James. I want to know what happens next!
Thank you to Chris James and THE Book Club for my ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Wow I stayed up to the wee small hours of the morning to finish this one! This book would make a fabulous transition to the small screen although a very gory one! Jacob Silver is on trial for murder. The trial is interspersed with flashbacks leading up to the deaths. Jacob is a 15 year old with a talent for painting when we first meet him. He is given a book on alchemy and after his father's death becomes an alchemist. He meets Emily the love of his life but who is the woman attending the trail everyday? This was a great thriller with a slight horror element that leaves you wanting more. It is well written and interesting, full of historical detail. I don't usually enjoy Victorian novels but this one really reeled me in and held my attention. I am looking forward to the proposed sequel. Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.
Chris James' novel is an intelligent, well crafted, beautifully written narrative, that easily inhabits Victorian England. I found myself engaged and entertained by this atmospheric page turner, which left me thinking it would make a first class television drama. I read a lot, and this book stands out. I'm happy to rcommend it, and give it an enthusiastic 5 stars!
I would like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.
Historical fiction and legal thrillers are two genres I like to read, so when I realised that this book is a combination of both, I couldn't wait to read it.
Guilty or Innocent? Set in Victorian London, Alchemy is actually a courtroom drama. Young Jacob Silver, a genius apotechary and artist is in the dock standing trial for murder. The first chapter is the beginning of the trial, where some horrific evidence is unveiled. From then on, through the various witnesses in court, we go back in time and relive the events that have led Jacob to court.
All commences with an ancient tome: Alchemy, donated to young Jacob for his birthday. Within this tome, a five-hundred-year-old riddle is waiting to be solved and someone is convinced that the young genius is capable of finally breaking the code that has eluded scholars for centuries - finding the missing ingredients for the elixir of Immortality. Will he succeed? How did his quest end up in murder?
The first chapter was gripping enough to engage the reader, but then it took me quite a while to feel really drawn into the story, and I found myself fighting an urge to skim through the text - something I've never done. Looking back, I think this happened because the actual murders start taking place about halfway through the book and it's at this point that the story gains momentum. Up to that point I didn't find myself adequately engrossed, however I persevered and now I'm just glad I did as I enjoyed the second half of the book much more.
I really liked the 19th century London setting of this book. I'm sure it must have required extensive research. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom scenes. I think they're brilliant. The prosecution and defence questions were very realistic and I felt as if I was actually there in the gallery with the rest of the audience viewing the proceedings and anxiously waiting for the final verdict. Will Jacob be found guilty or innocent of the accusations made against him? Will his incredible account of events stand and save him from the gallows?
The final twist of the story was totally unexpected. The ending left me wanting more and I was happy to note that a sequel will be out soon. I'm really looking forward to know what happens next.
In all honesty, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I was approached by the author and asked to read and review this book. However, I must say that this was a fantastic read. A bit on the macabre side, but that is one of the things I liked about it. I am delighted that I was given the opportunity to read this great book.
Not only is this story well written but very creative in the way that it is told. In most murder mysteries, you start off with the crime committed in the beginning then you follow the investigation. Not so with this particular story. You read about both the trial and the events leading up to it. With some stories, this could be confusing, however with this book it is very easy to keep track of what is happening and when. There are also some great unexpected turn of events that you probably won't see coming. The characters are also interesting and well developed. I was intrigued from beginning to end.
I was overwhelmed by the ultimate suspense that author Chris James has created in his sensational murder mystery, Alchemy. As it has such an intriguing subject matter, and it was marvellously gruesome in all the right places, this story captured my attention from the get-go.
In a Jack the Ripper-esque tale the essence and mood of the period is paramount, and Alchemy has this in abundance. The story starts with the trial of an Artist accused of murdering several ladies. The prosecution does not paint the artist in the best light (excuse the pun) and makes short work of his lifestyle, including his potion-induced episodes and his overall mental stability, that is if you take into account his ‘guinea pig’ acquaintances in his earlier life. His parental influence meant the artist developed a skill for pharmaceuticals, dispensing various remedies via his late father’s old apothecary shop, above which he lived and continued his passion as a painter.
But the subject matter is almost always the same – his dear, fragile Emily, his one and only true love. He endeavoured capture her image forever. His father had once said, discover immortality through your work. No one could have predicted the fatal outcome of these last words…
When a particular book ‘Alchemy’ fell into his hands, the whole idea of immortality took a whole new meaning – but to succeed, a few unfortunate others must suffer a deadly fate. As a result his work becomes darker, as does his devotion to Emily.
As he strives to succeed, a series of grotesque events affect some of the colourful characters he comes into contact with, none of whom can ever compare to his lost love. The story leads you to wonder if he was working alone, or had lost his mind with the potions he consumes, or was in fact in any way responsible for the macabre acts that had been committed.
Told not only in the voice of his last known muse as she listens to the trial where the artist is accused of murder, but also in his own voice, made for a lively account and kept me on my toes. As events leading up to the trial were recalled, a picture of the artist and his life starts to build. Intermittently, various historical references also offered an interesting flourish to give the story an odd plausibility (I’m won’t give any more away about this – the cover suggests what to expect!).
If you’re an avid fan of vivid, wonderfully atmospheric and graphically murderous tales that are told with suspenseful relish, then I’d wholeheartedly recommend you read this.
(My sincere thanks to the Author, who provided a digital copy of his book for review.)
I received a copy of this novel through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
Clever. The story, set in Victorian London, centers around the life of Jacob Silver, the son of a Jewish Apothecary owner and his wife, brilliant scientist and artist, who idolises Da Vinci.
The story flicks between Sliver's life from ages 15 - 24, and a court room, where young, naive Silver has been accused of the brutal murders of 5 women, all of whom he loved dearly.
This story is well written and very cleverly planned. It leaves you wondering in your own mind whether Silver is guilty of the crimes he's charged with, or whether his story is in fact as true as he believes.
As an artist, I can relate to Silver's desires to paint masterpieces, and his breech of security when he felt the overwhelming urge to touch the Mona Lisa, it's something I would love to do myself. His genius mind, much like Da Vinci, made him as much a brilliant scientist as he was a brilliant artist, finding both his paintings and scientific discoveries in great demand.
I just couldn't put the book down, would have finished it far sooner had it not been for a household of sick kids.
Possibly one of the best books released this year.
It is hard to write a review for such an amazing novel. A reviewer wants to ensure that he or she does it justice. I think most people will be hard pressed to find fault with Alchemy. In my opinion, Chris James has penned a fantastic story that switches almost seamlessly between the present (the trial) and the past.
The author has shown us that a well-written novel does not have to be stuffy and boring. The story flows effortlessly, and while the book feels authentic, it is never forced. Ordinarily, I don’t even read period novels, but this is so much more. It imparts an old-world modernism which is hard to articulate. Read it for yourself and I’m sure you will agree.
The story is not nearly as much about horror as you might think judging by the cover. In fact, you will probably be drawn in from the first page. It won’t be what you expected and that is a marvellous experience. There is no cliff-hanger at the end, but trust me, I do want to read more books in this series.
If you enjoy an intriguing blend of the supernatural and a good period mystery story, you should read Alchemy. Just don’t blame me if you don’t sleep again until you have finished reading this book. It is worth every star ....
Many thanks to the Author Chris James for providing me with a copy of this book.
Alchemy: A story of perfect murder introduces us to Jacob Silver, a young naive boy who's own life has been filled with such turmoil. On trial for crimes he swears he did not commit, we follow the Trial while at the same time read about Jacob's life leading up to his arrest.
Jacob is a brilliant artist and a striving to be the best Alchemist there ever was by cracking the code to immortality. Urged on by the mysterious "Professor" and Betsy his house keeper, Jacob's life begins to slowly unravel can he really resort to murder to bring back the women he loves?
As the trial continued, I found myself puzzling over Jacob. Did everything we read really happened or has all the concoctions Jacob taken over the years messed with his brain so much he's imagined everything to protect his own guilt. That does appear to be the case. Then again they always say the Perfect Murder is out there.
All in all a brilliant psychological novel with so many twists and turns along the way, you'll be wondering just what will happen next. A pager turner right till the very end.
Chris James delivers a wickedly entertaining read set in Victorian London, England. The first page had me hooked and I didn't put the book down until I had finished the last page. This book took me on a roller-coaster ride that thrilled, surprised and scared me! 'Alchemy: a story of perfect murder' is both atmospheric and absorbing, and you can tell the author obviously did his research on the Victorian era. Overall, an interesting murder mystery with a dab of romance and very likeable main characters made for one enthralling read. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy psychological mysteries with twist and turns.
I loved this story! I was happy to learn that there will be a sequel, yay! I love it when I am riveted to a story with a beginning, middle and a satisfying end and find out that there's a sequel (unlike an author who leaves me hanging without a decent ending insisting that I purchase the sequel to find out what happens next. I have one word for that author-NOT!) Anyway, the main character was very intriguing and I felt a range of feelings while reading: frustration, pity, anger, betrayal, sorrow, to name a few. I am not that fond of sequels, but I must admit that I look forward to this author's next book. Great read.
I was completely wrapped up in this book and found it really hard to put down. I would have finished it in a day if I hadn't had a house full of sick kids. Very well written and thought out. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more from Chris James. Highly recommended to people who love dark horror, crime novels, psychological thrillers, mystery.
What a great writer. I love his style. This is my first dark book I've ever read. it's very creepy but very entertaining. The only problem I had with this book is, sometimes it gets gross. But as I said, it's worth the read. If you like dark novels, you'll love this. This could easily be a Tim burton movie.
I really didn't know what to expect when I first started Alchemy, but I was gripped from start to finish. Although some details were quite horrific there was also an element of humour running through the novel, and Chris James' writing is outstanding. As long as you don't mind a few severed heads Alchemy is a superb read.
Many thanks to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was so different, unique, and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and will be eager to read more from Mr. James. Thanks again for the chance to read your beautifully written book!
A wonderfully weird and slightly wacky storyline written with fantastic descriptions enabling me to visualise each gruesome event in detail. I am eagerly awaiting the next book from Chris James.
Alchemy: A Story of Perfect Murder by Chris James was not perfect, but it did include alchemy and murder. Set in England in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century, it tells the story of insanity, hallucinogenic drug use, death, and magic using multiple characters, shifting points of view, and trial testimony. Though the narrative dragged at times with unnecessary complexity, it’s an entertaining read, full of lecherous nobles, noble prostitutes, chemicals, and blood. The novel’s great strength is its use of unreliable narrators, making the reader question not just motives, but some of the central events of the narrative. What was real and what wasn’t? It’s for you to decide. Or you could just wait for the promised sequel.
The use of multiple points of view, going from third person to first person from chapter to chapter tended to get confusing at times, especially with the large cast of characters. Some of the cuts away from the action to trial scenes were more distracting than effective. James’ attempt to cast doubt on whether some of the characters actually existed or were figments of the protagonist’s imagination worked at times, but the illusion was broken when we saw a few of these questionable characters talking to each other without the narrator present.
Though the setting was very colorful and effective, the dialogue descended into occasional anachronism. Romance and sex can be found aplenty though the narrative, in some cases with disgusting implications. If you’re looking for gritty realism, however, with dirty streetwalkers who’ll shag you in the alley for a thruppence, you won’t find it: this is a cleaner London, and the ladies of the evening are pretty and fresh, even as they speak in apostrophes and “guvnors.”
Alchemy figures strongly throughout, mostly with horrible effects for the protagonist and his victims. You just know that when the glass vials come out things won’t end well. Combine that with the Necronomicon of alchemy texts and references to Leonardo Da Vinci, and you’ve got a disturbing, even credible occult theme.
Despite its bewildering changes in perspective, the occasional grammatical errors and anachronisms, you’ll have fun reading Alchemy. Graphic, occasionally brutal and disgusting, it’s got a little something for any horror fan to enjoy. Give it a try.
