Adorable, quick-witted and intelligent Regency Romance of hidden identities and women breaking stereotypes! This is part of the Girl Out of Time series but has no time travel elements, and is definitely enjoyable as a standalone.

May 13, 2026I really wanted to read and enjoy this one since I read my first book my this author, however, there was a lot of talk about the MMC having a mistress that I did not feel comfortable continuing this book.

Speaking of the plot, there are some predictable elements common to historical romances; the novel at times leans predictable in that area, but it tells them with such an engaging voice and chemistry between Sebastian & Louisa that it still manages to hold your attention.
Other readers may wish for greater character development beyond the immediate family circle or a more complicated mystery story arc, but this is really just nitpicking in an otherwise satisfying package. Serzenta’s prose is accessible yet stylized; it captures the cadence of bygone eras without making readers feel as though they are reading ancient history.

This was such a fun and charming story filled with secret identities, and honestly, I loved that there was more than one. The plot itself was engaging, but what really kept me glued to the book was the character dynamic and the chemistry between the leads.
Sebastian was such a refreshing romantic hero. He’s supposed to have the reputation of a rake, but instead of being overly arrogant or dramatic, he’s just incredibly laid-back, calm, and effortlessly charming. That relaxed energy worked perfectly against Louisa’s much more intense and determined personality, and their opposites-attract dynamic made every interaction entertaining.
And I swear, every single time any FMC says “in the name of science” right before completely losing herself to attraction, I'm obsessing. Those moments are genuinely hilarious and adorable at the same time. And I love that it happened here!
This is also a no-spice romance, which somehow made the romantic tension hit even harder. The emotional build-up carried the story beautifully without needing explicit scenes.

This is such a light hearted and delightful story, perfect escapism. With engaging characters hiding secrets and identities (none of them awful or complete idiots) leading to multiple misunderstandings and twist and turns, the plot is amusing and fun. Louisa is feisty and witty and determined to step outside the box assigned to her by society by becoming a playwright. Sebastian is leading a bit of a rake's life, but is inherently kind and caring, and has already stepped outside the box assigned to him by being a successful playwright, incognito of course. There's lots of clever dialogue with elements of plays within plays and farce and I loved the 'quotes' from their works. Great ending as well.
I had read 'To Steal a Melody' (which I also enjoyed very much), but it really isn't necessary to have read it, as I think 'To Steal a Secret' is truly standalone, although the author has cleverly interwoven the books. They are companion novels to 'The Girl Out of Time', which I haven't read as I'm not really a fan of the time travel genre. I mention this as time travel isn't a feature of either 'To Steal a Secret' or 'To Steal a Melody', so don't be put off if you're not either.

I really enjoyed this book. There are some fine characters and unlike many in the genre none of them are complete idiots. The MFC, Louisa, has a feisty character with plenty of wit and she is leading a slightly complicated life as the daughter of a Duke and an aspiring playwright.
She gets mixed up in a farce of mistaken identities with other characters, but in the main with Sebastian who in fact flits between 3 identities and is also a playwright.
The farce is the main theme of the book and allows for multiple misunderstandings along with romantic development. This is a clean story with nothing beyond kissing in terms of physical interaction.
There is plenty of fun before the HEA ending and only one thing that didn't work for me; part of the farce involves a minor character asking Sebastian for help by way of a letter, but also asking him to be discrete. She gives him her location but not the name she is going under, this is crazy as it means there is no way for him to actually provide any help.

We have Lady Louisa Ascombe who has secrets and is currently lost in thought over one of them when she encounters a stranger! Louisa is dressed as a widow but she is definitely not! When she meets Mr Wexley who has been invited to a wedding of Maria Grey Louisa best friend to her brother Daniel.
Maria is also hiding a secret actually several which cross reference at times in this story!
Sometimes in this story of playwrights and inspiration it feels like no one is true to themselves!

4/5...This was a thoroughly enjoyable Regency romance with a delightful enemies-to-lovers dynamic and plenty of witty banter. The chemistry between the leads was one of the book’s strongest elements; their verbal sparring felt sharp, playful, and genuinely entertaining. I especially appreciated that both characters were ambitious writers, which added an interesting layer to their relationship and gave them something meaningful to clash over beyond simple romantic misunderstandings. Louisa was an easy heroine to root for. Her determination, intelligence, and refusal to be overshadowed made her a compelling character, while Sebastian balanced her well with charm, humor, and just enough vulnerability beneath his confidence. Their interactions carried the story, and watching their respect for one another grow was just as satisfying as the romance itself. I could not put this book down! The characters were engaging, and despite not reading the first book, it became obvious quickly which side character had a very interesting secret. The leads do a fantastic job of verbally sparring while secretly yearning, and I loved the beginning chapter quotes that allowed a story within a story. I would rate this book a 4.5, but closer to 5 stars than 4. The plot was engaging and kept me wondering what would happen next (and being wrong most of the time). The only downside was that some of the dialogue, especially from the FMC felt anachronistic, and maybe a little too much sensuality to call it a "clean" read, but it's certainly closed door. Overall, it was very enjoyable and entertaining.

To Steal A Secret is a companion novel to The Girl Out of Time and focuses on the side characters from the Regency timeline Louisa and Sebastian. I have to admit that I found this stoty to be very cute and charming. It focuses on Lousia who is very set on making a career for herself as an accomplished writer even if her station as a woman and a Duke's daughter discourages her from achieving it. Sebastian a self-proclaimed rake with a very soft dispostion has his own dreams of being a writer but suffers from a horrible case of writers block.
When these two are thrown together it soon becomes a battle of wills. Will they manage to team up putting aside their differences to create the perfect story and find romance in the process. Or will their stubborn pride continue to drive a wedge between them?

This book is set in Regency times.
Both main characters are playwrights. The male character is lacking inspiration and jumps at the chance to solve a mystery that could help with his writers block. He meets the female character and even though she seems immune to his charms but doesnt realise that he is the playwright that she admires, they end up falling for each other.
I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend reading it.

A great historical romantic comedy full of wit. The farcical elements are highly enjoyable to read. The heroine Louisa is a strong, independent character with a wicked sense of humour and a mischievous nature. The whole story holds a lot of charm and endearing characters. Sebastian and Louise are my favorite couple for "The girl out of time", so glad to finally know their love story. I especialy love both are free spirits that want to be playwriters. Their is tension, slow burning, lots of drama, hidden identides and characters full of admiration for to one they love. I really enjoy that Sebastian is not a libertine that try to take advantage of Louise, he gives her the space that she needs and only revels his true feelings in the right moment.

June 2, 2026What a fun, convoluted story! I greatly enjoyed Louisa and Sebastian's verbal sparring. It was amusing to follow the progression of their relationship. I enjoyed the letter writing sequences as well. Both characters were courageous to exist outside of society's norms. This a fun book that moves quickly and keeps your attention to the very end!

Good plot! Lots of twists & turns. Main female character kind of saucy! the mother seems the difficult one! The story connects with another book which is fun. I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. I may go read the her other two books.

I really enjoyed this story. It is a sweet love story, but is also has a clever plot with secrets. It is well written, with likeable main characters. It is a quick easy fun read.

I had such a great time with 'To Steal a Secret!!
Louisa was a wonderful FMC - particularly at the start when her independence really shines through! I loved the theatre element all the way through the book, though the reading scene with Sebastian and Louisa was my favourite!
Overall a great, engaging read!! The charades hint in the epilogue was perfect too!

I'm a sucker for regency romance novels and this was a lovely one to read. The plot was great with the right pace and great progression. It wasn't exactly a spectacularly written novel but I enjoyed it a lot and it's great for people who love regency and really insane side character plots.
