Cute but Deadly

Rate this book
The asylum has fallen, and the patients have been let loose...

Nemo and Baz are the most innocent mass murderers the world has ever seen, so we're laying low after breaching containment. Great plan ... except we aren't very good at it. Plus, the big, bad group that made Verfallen Asylum? Yeah, they show up to kill us. They're cleaning house and want the worst first.

Guess the honeymoon phase is over, and it's time to do what we do best: mayhem and murder. But escaping our enemies isn't our only concern. Baz starts changing.

He's becoming something worse, something deadlier, and this time he might kill us all, even if it's the last thing he wants.

Author Note: Cute but Deadly is book three in a four book series and ends in a cliffhanger.

I just adore these characters so much, the most lovable unhinged psychos of all time. I was giddy and snickering throughout all the murder and mayhem. I could read 100 books in Baz’s POV and never get bored.

This is the third book in the Verfallen Asylum series, and one I had been anxiously awaiting for over a year, and it absolutely did not disappoint!!
Honestly, If it weren’t for the wild national snowstorm keeping my kids home from school, I would’ve finished this in a single day. I was completely locked in.

This book is more plot-driven and has less spice overall since the crew is on the run, but let’s be real, they’re way too horny not to give us something. We do get some quality moments, just not the same heat level as book one. Consider this your friendly disclaimer if you’re expecting maximum spice right out of the gate.

We’re back with the original unhinged Verfallen villain crew, and this time Baz, and his baddie basilisk self, takes center stage. He’s everyone’s favorite for a reason, and I’m so glad he finally got his time to shine. Getting more of his POV was both wildly entertaining and deeply informative, especially as it peeled back layers of his past trauma… even as he actively fought to suppress it on the page. That balancing act takes skill, and Beatrix Hollow absolutely nailed it.

With Verfallen Asylum burned down and the inmates now loose in the real world, this group is a spectacular hot mess. They are failing at fitting in, and imagining them loose in a Walmart is honestly terrifying and hilarious. Baz and Nemo are somehow both innocent to the world and wildly confident, and watching them experience new things was so much fun.

The pacing matches the first two books: fast, chaotic, and full of top-tier humor and unhinged behavior. I also really appreciate the consistent multi-POV approach. Each character has a distinct voice, tone, and presence, and they all feel fully fleshed out still.

If I had one small wish, it would be for more Orson POV. His psychology background, age, and experience give him such a unique blend of dry, observant humor, and he’s arguably the character we know the least about, even though he’s the adult with the money and the knowledge. Not knowing more doesn’t detract from the story; it’s just something I’d personally love to see expanded potentially in the final book.

Baz’s love for Bree and the guys is undeniable. That said, I was actually glad Bree didn’t have as much page time this round. I loved her in book one, but she’s had the least overall character growth, and back in the real world she feels especially out of her element, almost like she forgot everything she learned, making her a wee bit annoying to me this go round. I found myself far more invested in the male dynamics this time: Nemo and Orson clashing, Orson and Baz circling each other, and finally Baz recognizing his love for Nemo and accepting the mate bond.

Baz’s “upgrades” are incredibly cool (even if I hate the circumstances that caused them), and my monster-loving heart was thrilled to see him become more. Back in book one, I genuinely wondered how he was a basilisk with no visible signs (no fangs, no shimmer of scales, no split tongue) so this evolution felt extremely satisfying.

I was also really hoping the crew might reach out to Hazel and her guys for help, but there’s still time for that in the final book. And honestly? I wouldn’t be mad if Baz’s abusive uncle ended up being useful for more than Zero’s food source.

I’ll be honest: I might have been a little upset about the shorter length and the cliffhanger if I hadn’t already known, thanks to following the author on Instagram, that this story was intentionally split into two books so it could be fully fleshed out. Knowing that made all the difference. Because of the ending and everything it sets up, I’m now ridiculously excited (and a little feral) to see how the final book plays out.

Overall, Cute But Deadly delivers exactly what I love about this series: chaos, heart, humor, monsters, and a deeply Unhinged trauma bonded found family. I am officially counting down the days until the final book.

5 ⭐ 3.5 🌶️

I am so freaking happy to be back at Verfallen. I'm so head over heels for these characters and this story. This one picks up right where Cute but Creepy ended and we're back with Bree, Baz, Nemo and Orson. While I hate they didn't get to live carefree for the rest of their days, I am so excited to be with them and taking down the big bad.

I feel like this one really focused on Baz, which is fantastic because he's probably my fave. I really loved being in his head so much and learning more about him and his past. This one gets darkkk and not just with blood and guts and unaliving. We get deep into the psyche of these unhinged crazypants' and it's emotionally taxing in all the best ways.

The spice was less than the previous books in this series, but still just as hot. I loved the group play as always, but watching the new dynamics with Nemo and Baz and Orson was freaking phenomenal and had me melting on the spot. I can not wait for Cute But Vicious and the happy ever afters that await.

This doesn’t slow down because it’s a third book. The story flows effortlessly, drawing you deeper into the world with every chapter.
What really stood out to me was the care the author put into making these characters feel distinct. They are clearly their own people, with different energies and emotional rhythms, but when they’re together it clicks. Nothing feels forced or convenient and that makes every interaction land harder.
Emotionally, this book delivers on every level. I laughed, got angry on their behalf, and felt the tension settle in when it mattered most. There were moments that genuinely hurt, followed by ones that pulled me back into hope, and then the spicy is just mmm delicious. It’s a full emotional arc!!!
This was a joy to read, and a strong reminder of why this author’s work keeps getting better.

Ever race through the first 75% of a book then realise you don't actually want it to be over so you ration out one chapter a day just to prolong the experience?
That was this book.

I'm biased. I love Beatrix Hollow's writing, I love Bree and her men, and I love the world of Verfallen, so naturally I really enjoyed this. Now I just need to wait on tenterhooks for the next one.

Interesting

I hate cliffhangers and I really hope that the ending isn't really what it is. I know all good authors have a plan, but this book took forever to come out.
