Set. Spike. Surrender. Serving Looks… and Bad Decisions

ARC Review: He Set the Rules. She Broke Them.

Coach’s Rules by Annie Black is a fierce, sizzling dose of spicy sports romance infused with a dark, power-charged edge. The story teeters in that exhilarating space between discipline and desire, where authority, ambition, and attraction collide in every rally. Each scene feels like a match point, and nobody’s playing it safe. The vibe is pure tension: strict coach, defiant athlete, and a power dynamic that starts as discipline and turns into something way more personal once the gym clears out.

Meet Taylor Reed: a fierce, quick-witted athlete who loves testing boundaries almost as much as she loves winning. Coach DeMarco is a seasoned, controlled figure who runs his court with precision. Their chemistry? Instantly combustible. What begins as him correcting her attitude and sharpening her skills quickly escalates into a high-stakes back-and-forth, where every look feels like a serve, and every private lesson becomes a full-contact emotional match. He pushes her. She pushes back. And in that heated volley, the tension stops being just about volleyball.

The setting magnifies the tension—empty courts, late-night practices, the echo of a ball smacking sand after hours — it all builds a secret, electric atmosphere where emotions surge as fiercely as overworked muscles. What starts as a lesson in respect morphs into a dangerous game of control, trust, and boundaries blur faster than a referee can call them. DeMarco’s calm, coach-like exterior begins to crack, risking everything for a connection he knows could blow the entire game.

Underlying it all is a powerful current of dominance and surrender, entwined with raw emotion. Taylor isn’t just rebelling—she’s unraveling feelings she barely understands, especially for the one man who challenges her hardest, who is also the one who makes her feel safe. And when Coach drops lines like, “Play under my rules. Win for me, and I’ll show you what real victory feels like,” it’s an ace—no doubt. 🥵 And let’s be honest—this might be the most intense private volleyball lesson ever written. Their secret, charged connection balances on the edge of strength and surrender, and the risk makes every page impossible to put down.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️—steamy, tense, and packed with power-play energy. My only complaint? This is part of the Heat in a Hurry: Crossing the Line series, and it ends way too fast. I needed at least three more sets… and maybe a tie-breaker 😏

If you like your romance risky, rule-breaking, and packed with tension that could snap the net, this book will have you sweating through every rally—and begging for one more serve. It doesn’t just cross the line; it dives over the net and dares you to call a foul 😈🏐!

“Coach’s Rules" is a short, unapologetically spicy age-gap romance that leans hard into forbidden desire, power dynamics, and high-pressure temptation. Set against the charged backdrop of competitive volleyball, the story wastes no time establishing friction between a defiant athlete and her intimidating, rule-driven coach.

The chemistry is immediate and combustible. What begins as strict discipline and simmering frustration quickly escalates into a dangerous game of control and consent, with clear rules, boundaries, and a deliberate push-and-pull that heightens the tension. Annie Black excels at conveying intensity—every look, command, and internal conflict is crafted to keep the reader hooked and breathless.

Despite its short length, the story maintains a strong sense of pacing. The sports setting lends credibility and structure to the power imbalance, while the heroine's internal struggle—between ambition, rebellion, and desire—keeps the narrative engaging rather than purely erotic.

Overall, "Coach's Rules" delivers exactly what it promises: fast, filthy, and intense forbidden romance with a strong authority trope. Perfect for readers looking for a quick, steamy escape that doesn’t shy away from tension, control, and consensual rule-breaking.

Try it.

What happens when you don’t follow Coach’s rules?

Well, Taylor is about to find out when she smarts off to him one more time. For some reason, Taylor is constantly not following her coach’s rules and pushing him until the point where he has enough. The story is very well written and very spicy. Annie Black always makes sure that choice is involved in her stories and the subs are never pushed beyond their limits.

Discipline Under Pressure

Taylor has been testing Coach Demarco’s patience for months until he gives her a choice. Discipline or respect? What develops is a short and spicy story that is only the beginning to their forbidden rendezvous. It was a hot and steamy read.

This was hot from the very start, and the coach certainly knows how to get her ready. I felt for her when she had to sit through the press with the balls, but the reward came later!.
