Gretchen and Marianne, retired ladies going to their book club meeting, what could be more mundane? But not so! There's controversy stirring about one of their members demanding a book be banned. Just when it's disclosed that no one likes her, she is found dead in the storeroom of the cafe where they are meeting, by Marianne! The sleuthing begins with a tangled web of secrets revealing the true nastiness of the victim and those she hurt. Some might even say she was "asking for it"! A clever retribution for past inflicted injuries? Well, you will have to read the book because lots of motives start surfacing...makes one think about treating people better so as not to end up like Pamela! This is a fast-paced book you will enjoy!

This is the first in the series. The main characters are Maryanne and Gretchen. They are members of a book club in Franklin's Crossings. When the most hated woman in town and a member of the club is murdered Maryanne and Gretchen decide they have to look into it. They start asking questions and following the answers. They end up find out more about the murdered woman and dislike her even more but as everyone keeps saying, No one deserves to die that way. They keep feeling like they need one more thing to tie it all together. But can they figure it outbefore they find themselves in danger ?

I saw some rather unfair reviews, and I don't agree with them, BUT everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I thought it was a well thought out read and I enjoyed the entire story. Some repetition and drama where it wasn't really needed, but the core of the story was good. I enjoyed the two friends who grew up together and their tenacity in finding out the truth. I liked the way the story made you think. Stories about good friends are important to me and the book club sounds like a group of people who truly care about each other. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to the next one.

it was okay

Of course he did it. This book went on and on for too long to get to the end result we all knew was coming. I started off intrigued and excited to read more but after about a third of it, I couldn’t wait to be done due to inconsistencies and repetitiveness. Then, by the time we get the answer it still goes on and on and every time I thought “okay, that’s a nice way to end it” it went on to fit in one more little something else.

The story moves at a fast pace with likable characters and a creative plot. Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable read. Maisy Marple is an author to follow. I'm enjoying her books and highly recommend them to all.

Maryanne and Gretchen are likable characters and the mystery started out well. However, I found that it slowed down and became repetitive without actually advancing the story.
