The battle for the crown begins…

In the kingdom of Aerilon, ruled by a queen paranoid of losing her throne, keeping your head down and staying silent is the only way to survive. And for Ayleth of the Jusaren Kindred, a quiet, obscure existence tending sheep on her family farm is exactly what she wants. She knows all too well what comes from speaking out against the queen, and dreads doing anything that could endanger those she loves.

But everything changes the day a Master Scholar arrives with a shocking message: the Eternal One has chosen her as the next ruler of Aerilon.

Terrified of her so-called destiny, Ayleth wishes to forget the old man’s prophecy. That is, until a shocking betrayal forces her to flee for her life with the Scholar’s mysterious companion, Kane, as her protector. Thrust into a perilous journey, separated from all she’s ever known, and leaning on a stranger for survival, Ayleth can no longer avoid the decision she must make… Will she keep to the safe and easy path? Or remain obedient to the Eternal One—no matter the cost?

5+ stars (6/10 hearts). I've only read The Princess of Dreams by this author, but I enjoyed it so much I immediately jumped on this book, the start of a new series. I was NOT disappointed. What a fantastic retelling of David's life! I could see the elements and parallels so well and to be honest it helps you appreciate what David lived through as a person when you see it from this perspective. Also, in the French bible, the word that in English is translated to THE LORD is translated as "the Eternal," so seeing God called by this title in this book just added the final touch to my enjoyment. The plot, writing, world-building, and theme melded together to create something truly worth of that gorgeous cover; the slow-burn romance and budding friendship promise so much; the characters are extremely compelling; and I am so excited for the next volume in this series. Well done, Ashton Dorow!

Note: for those who care, this book, being based on the history of Israel, contains "Master Scholars" (Levites) who hear from the Eternal One & have visions—just like prophets in the Bible. There is some mild violence, including a cauterization scene; also a few mentions of women's virtue being threatened.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

No review, since I’m the author! 😍📖 But here’s some information that may interest you.

Spice level: none
Language: none
Violence: PG-13 level (think Lord of the Rings movies when it comes to the action and fight scenes)

Potential triggers: death and loss, war violence, a couple threats against women that aren’t carried out, and wound tending

If I could give this book more than five stars, I would! I was hooked from the idea of a King David retelling, and this was amazing!!! It had all the elements of the biblical story while still being true to the author’s own story. I loved everything about this book, especially the faith themes about trust and perseverance. Also thought the POV switched between Eris, Ayleth, Kane an a few others were very well written and just plain awesome. I need book two ASAP!
I received an early copy from the author, all opinions are mine and mine alone.

Why can I only give 5 stars?????
I loved it.
Based on the Biblical story of King David.

But there is ONE problem!!!!!!!

Let me put it this way
when you are about to turn 81
you revert back to being a two year old!!!

Kicking and screaming when you don't get your way
and I do mean like ....get my way.....NOW!!!

This author does not have the 2nd, third or 4th in the series
out yet!
Totally unacceptable!

I want to read more right NOW!!!

So I am going to pout until she QUICKLY
finishes book two.

Oh and she is a great writer
but SLOW...
in my opinion

which is :

if it is not done today
that..... IS.... slow!

I refuse to eat also
I will stomp around
and slam doors
and yell
so she can hear me!!

Are you done yet????
Sigh!

This. Book. Wow. That's it, that's my review...no additional words needed. Just kidding, I love words!

This was a new to me author. I believe she is indie, and self-published, or at least this book is. This book is the first in a new series, and I'm completely obsessed with this book and the author. Sadly, it's going to be a bit of a wait until Book 2 comes out (she said the release date will be announced in the next few months). I'm going to need to immediately go and read her back list to help sooth the wicked book hangover I got from this one. All of the feels. I could not put this book down.

The story is a retelling of how King David, from the Bible, is anointed as future king and his journey to the throne. It's gender flipped, so the 'King David' is our FMC, Ayleth, who is a shepherdess in a rural region of the kingdom. She has an unexpected encounter with a Master Scholar, who tells her family she has been chosen by the Eternal One to be the next queen. They are instantly terrified because the current Queen is evil and corrupt, and will kill anyone who threatens her reign. Due to a serious of horrible events, Ayleth is forced to flee with Kane, the Scholar's assistant and protector, who now pledges his allegiance to Ayleth as future queen. They embark on a journey to find safety and begin her training, both in combat and knowledge. They are separated due to an unexpected war with a neighboring country, and Ayleth sets off to follow the army to ensure Kane's safety. What she didn't know, is that she would be the one destined to save the kingdom.

Ayleth and Kane are amazing characters. They have romantic interest and chemistry, but can't act on due to societal roles and expectations. I do hope that their relationship will develop into more of romance in Book 2. I loved the parallels of Ayleth as David, Queen Eris as King Saul, and Princess Lovanna as Jonathon. The way this story mirrored the accounts in 1 Samuel while still maintaining a completely unique fantasy story and plot were excellent. It was non-magical fantasy, and gave similar vibes to Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones at different points, but squeaky clean!

The faith in this story was written as allegory, with God as the Eternal One. The faith themes and content were strong, with a focus on trusting God to make a way when He has called you to something, overcoming doubt, and having incredible faith in the face of danger.

What I enjoyed:
🗡️ The writing (new fave!)
🗡️ Dragons!
🗡️ He protects her, she saves him
🗡️ Baddie FMC 🏹
🗡️ Super clean (no kisses)
🗡️ Amazing faith allegory
🗡️ The journey
🗡️ Retelling of King David & Saul story
🗡️ Book 1 of series...more to look forward to!

⚠️ Content Warnings:
- On page death
- Corrupt queen & soldiers
- Violence against innocents (pillaging, burning, brutality)
- War Violence (sword, dagger, bow, etc.)
- Trafficking (political/forced slavery)

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 Stars
Writing: 5.o
Characters & Plot: 5.0
Faith & Content: 5.0
Enjoyability: 5.0

This is a book I will absolutely re-read, will add to my physical collection, and I can't wait to read the next book in The Crown of Aerilon series! Highly recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction, realistic (non-magic) fantasy, and unique Biblical retellings.

This is a fantastical, gender swapped reimagining of the story of David. The kingdom of Aerilon, which is ruled by a queen paranoid of losing her throne. To survive you must stay silent and keep your head down. Ayleth of the Jusaren Kindred is a quiet obscure shepherdess on her family farm. She knows all too well what comes from speaking out against the queen, and dreads doing anything that could endanger those she loves. Then all changes the day a Master Scholar arrives with a shocking message: the Eternal One has chosen her as the next ruler of Aerilon. When a family member betrays her, she must face this destiny head on even though she is terrified. Because of the betrayal she is forced to flee for her life with the old man's companion, Kane as her protector. They embark on a dangerous journey and then her destiny seems to find her.

I though this story was so well done. This was the first book I have ever read by this author, but it definitely will not be the last. Ayleth is such a great David character. She shows so much growth. I love that there are a couple of things that keep you guessing. In the end battle, I love that it follows the King David story close enough that it is recognizable but not so close that you feel like you are reading the Bible. I can not wait to see what happens in book 2.

If you like clean Biblical based fantasy you will love this book. If you want your Biblical retellings to be super literal then this one might put you off.

This book was an ARC read, but all thoughts are my own. I don’t know why I doubt Ashton Darrow’s ability to take a Bible story and make it her own, yet once again she has exceeded my expectations! She took the story of David, gender swapped it, and made it fantasy. It took me a little bit to get into the book and see where it was headed but by the 25% mark I was fully invested and hardly put the book down! Action, ancient libraries, adventure, evil queens, and a dragon all appear in this book which I’m happy to say is the first in the series. If you love medieval stories, fantasy, and Christian themes, you will love this book. For me, it has hit the top 10 of 2026!

If you love Narnia, Tolkien, and, obviously, the Bible, I think you’ll really enjoy this one.
4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Ashton Dorow is an excellent storyteller, and the world building in Crown of Destiny is incredibly immersive 🔥🩵. I genuinely enjoyed the fantasy elements, although it did take a little while to really get to the “fantasy part” of the story. The beginning was a bit slow for me personally, but eventually things REALLY started picking up, and from there I was hooked.

One of my favorite things about this book, and all of Ashton’s books really, is the way she parallels biblical stories within a medieval fantasy world. Taking inspiration from the story of David and reimagining those themes through a female lead was genius.

I do think it’s important to go into this knowing that Crown of Destiny isn’t necessarily a David retelling. It is VERY clearly inspired by his story, but it also very much becomes its own. Keeping that in mind makes it easier to appreciate the places where Ayleth’s journey differs from David’s actual life rather than expecting every element to line up.

And Ayleth is such a strong female lead. She goes through a LOT of growth throughout this story, and by the end, she’s genuinely formidable 🏹. I loved her passion for doing what is right and the way she cares for the people around her.

And Kane 💙.
The mystery surrounding who he really is is very intriguing. I figured out at least part of it fairly early, but that didn’t take away from watching everything unfold between him and Ayleth. He’s a great male lead, and I’m VERY interested to learn more about his past in the next book.

Besides the dragon elements which… chef’s kiss by the way 🐉😂, one of my favorite aspects of the book is Ayleth’s developing relationship with Kane. They have this whole “will they, won’t they?” thing happening that you kind of love and hate at the same time. I did, anyway.

With that said, if there’s one thing I’d love to see Ashton lean into a little more across her books, it’s the passion in the romance.
And NO, I don’t mean spice 🚫🌶️. I mean the chemistry, the tension, the yearning, the moments that make you swoon. The romance is definitely there, but at times it can feel a bit timid compared to how boldly she writes everything else. She creates these characters with SO much potential for chemistry that I just want her to let them have it!

Basically what I’m saying is:
📣 EMBRACE THE ROMANCE, ASHTON!
Give me the SWOON!
Because listen… if we can get a little grotesque with the battle scenes, I think we can handle a little more butterflies. 😁

The action in this book is incredibly well written, though. Ashton has a real talent for making you feel like you’re right there in the middle of the fighting and chaos.
Her dialogue and character development are equally strong. You genuinely care about the good guys, and you genuinely LOATHE the bad guys.

Overall, Crown of Destiny is a beautifully written, biblically inspired fantasy with immersive world building, excellent characters, dragons, action, mystery, and a story that only gets stronger as it unfolds.

I cannot wait for Book 2. 🤩

The King David story parallels made sense and were creative (you'll pick up on them right away), although I don't think the gender-flipping worked well for me. I don't know how I feel about it. The first third and very end were solid. Overall, this is well-written with good technical prowess but I felt like there was a chunk of 100 pages or so in the middle that felt underutilized. I didn't love how the momentum was carried in the rising action and it actually slowed everything down for me (some of it felt like filler), and made the climax feel anti-climactic, especially since we know where the story is going. Almost everything surrounding the war/battles felt flat to me.

Kane ended up being my favorite character. I wish there had been a little more going on with, the protagonist, Ayleth's POV in that slow middle I mentioned. And I skimmed Queen Eris’s segments. I think they should have felt more unhinged than they did to really make an impact.

There was pleasantly more romance in this than I expected, albeit a budding romance. I thought that was written super well. Overall the conclusion/epilogue was great. Like I said, that slow middle really impacted my rating. It actually took it from a 4.5 to my current rating, because I began to wonder if this was worth finishing. I'm not sure if this is marketed as YA but it felt perfect for a YA reader! I am interested in the next book!

In this book:
-King David inspired (gender-flipped)
-chosen one
-multi-POV
-protective MMC
-shepherdess FMC
-wound tending
-he trains her
-hidden identity

Content Guide:
romance - clean/light
language - clean
violence - frequent & non-graphic
fantasy - non-magical; dragons
faith - medium amount

Potential Content Warnings:
-grief/death/murder
-war violence
-cauterization
-euphemistic threats of sexual violence (not carried out and brief)

There’s not many words I have to express how AMAZING and inspiring this book is other than this; READ IT! You won’t regret it. From the very first page to the last, Ayleth and Kane keep the reader on their toes. From a slow burning love story to a shepherdess who fights for her family and kingdom, this story will grab the readers attention during every twist and turn! Thank you Ashton, for another great story and reminder that no matter the circumstances, the Eternal One will be with us through it all!

I received a complimentary advance copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Wow! I’m even more excited about this series than I was before starting book one! The plot elements are so well timed, and while there is action/adventure in the first half, the second half takes it to a new level!

Two things stand out in this non-magical Christian Fantasy: God’s sovereignty and our willingness to obey. Or, to say it like this, we may miss what God is doing today, but there comes a day when we can see how long He was busy preparing us for something. This story is a King David and King Saul retelling, and it stands out how David’s faithfulness watching over the sheep was there before he was positioned to watch over a kingdom. And that’s what stood out the most about Ayleth — her faithfulness (her heart) in the before, her response in the waiting because she believes Him, and, above all, His sovereignty in the purpose.

This story feels like an epic allegorical tale filled with truths from the Word. Verses like Proverbs 3:5-6 and Colossians 3:23 came to mind. Thinking back on this story, there is such much that can be discussed. It’s amazing!

One last thing, this book is light on romance, and I’m really appreciating the slow, slow burn. I can’t wait to return to this series!

Content:
Non-magical Christian Fantasy
King David and King Saul Retelling
Intimacy level: No spice
Language: No profanity
Violence | War scenes
Sensitive subjects: brief references to human s*crifice

I finished this book in one day! I literally couldn’t stop reading—the atmosphere, rich world-building, biblical principles, and intriguingly complex characters had me hooked! I was in such a reading slump, and this book completely changed that—it was just the thing I needed to change my perspective in the adversity I find myself in. The beauty of Christian fiction!

King David’s story has always been close to my heart—it was one of many that deepened my faith and opened my eyes to what, or rather who, we should live for. David’s many talents, such as singing and playing the lyre, remind us that God has blessed us with many abilities, which we use to glorify Him. This is shown beautifully with Ayleth’s skills with the pipe—her music soothes others and reminds them of the beauty around them.

Ayleth was such a relatable character. When destined to be Queen, she reasonably felt inadequate, but her faith in the Lord was her strength. Her continuing to do the right thing, even though faithlessness would be a whole lot easier, was admirable and revealed the beautiful interplay of God’s plans. Even though we can’t see the way, He always has a plan that is for our good and for His glory, perfectly shown through Ayleth’s choice of following the Lord’s direction and receiving His help, strength, guidance, and peace.

Kane was the perfect match for Ayleth—strong, stalwart, and honorable—yet deeply afraid of failing those he loves. His constant fear of failure and not being enough is tested through this story—and Ayleth helps remind him that with God, victory comes. And in return, Kane helps Ayleth to see the beauty and strength that come from having a tender heart—offering love and purity, reflecting the loving kindness God shows to His children. They perfectly embody Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
‭‭
I love how Miss Dorow created a unique story with elements of King David’s own claim to the throne. The main biblical principles of trusting in the Lord, the power of prayer, relying on God for success, and the deep consequences of relying on yourself instead of God were beautifully executed. I cannot wait for the next book!

Crown of Destiny by Ashton Dorow is a captivating fantasy novel that plunges you into a world filled with adventure, loyalty, and destiny. From the very first page, the action is relentless, filled with tension and excitement.

One of my favorite lines - “If the Eternal One has chosen you, how can you run from that?” This line resonates deeply, reflecting the internal struggles of the characters as they confront their destinies and the weight of their responsibilities.

The bond between Ayleth and Kane, whose vow, “I go where you go, Ayleth. I will spend my last breath in pursuit of keeping you safe. You can count on that,” highlights the theme of loyalty and devotion. Their relationship is a true slow-burn, sure to leave you anxious to see how it develops.

Dorow’s writing is vivid and immersive, the world of Aerilon beautifully crafted, allowing you to visualize the intense battles and emotion that unfolds. I was repeatedly drawn back to the life of David on his own journey to the crown. Whether you’re a fan of fantasy or simply looking for a gripping story, this book is a must-read.

Overall, this book is a thrilling read full of heart-pounding action, faith, and loyalty. A definite 5+ star read for me!! I shall eagerly await book 2!

I absolutely LOVED this book! It was well worth the wait and I am so excited for the next installment in the series!
A christian, medieval, slow-burn romance, biblical retelling of the story of David with David being Ayleth. I am very particular about the books I read and this one met my requirements!
It had an amazing and easy to follow plot with relatable characters and deep personalities. As an author I know how hard it is to form thoughts into words that work well with the storyline and character and Ashton E. Dorrow has somehow managed to do so perfectly! I felt every heart-break, every tear, every joyous moment, and every drop of courage probably as deeply as Ayleth and Kane.
What REALLY proves a books worth to me is the characters.
If the characters are shallow, or even perfect, I will quickly lose interest in the book and put it down. But if said characters are as flawed as every other human being on this planet and the book portrays their struggle to overcome those flaws, along with keeping the plot-line afloat and even adding a romance to the side, I have to say I am impressed with this book and I highly encourage you to really read and enjoy this amazing book!

Ashton is a brilliant writer, and this latest book is no exception! I was up late into the night, determined to reach the end. Which I did, and then promptly messages her because WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?!?! 😂

If you love the stories of King David in Scripture, the archery and secret life in the woods of Robin Hood, the soft femininity of Arwen and strength in battle of Éowyn in the Lord of the Rings, and legends of King Arthur (before he was King Arthur), then you will love this gender-swapped retelling of David and Goliath (with more of David’s story to come in future books in the series!

I loved this book from beginning to end. It made me laugh, cry, gasp, and experience emotions I didn’t even know were possible. Once I started reading, I could not put it down. And now I’m eagerly waiting for book two because I’m completely invested in this story and these characters!

This is the type of book that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. The faith elements, character growth, and emotional depth were beautifully done.

One thing I’d encourage readers to remember is to approach this story with an open mind. While it contains themes and inspiration from King David’s story, it is not meant to be a direct retelling. Instead, it draws from biblical themes and presents them from a unique perspective.

I truly don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

This book was amazing!! The retelling of King David's story was done so well. I've loved every one of Ashton Dorow's books, but this one specifically shines a new light on a bible story that can be hard to fully understand and connect with. The way that she wrote this book expresses so much of the inner thoughts and struggle of those who have been called to a higher purpose.
I love the relationship between Kane and Ayleth, It's truly so beautiful, and I can't wait to see where they go in the next book!!!

I absolutely loved this book! One of my favorite parts was trying to figure out which characters matched the people from the original Bible story. It added such a fun layer to the reading experience. The author did an incredible job blending romance and the realities of war, creating a story that was both emotional and compelling. I was invested in the characters from the very beginning and found myself eager to keep reading to see how everything would unfold. I highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys biblical fiction with a touch of romance.

This was a fantastic first book in the fantasy series The Crown of Aerilon, which is inspired by the biblical story of David. I absolutely loved reading and recognizing the familiar elements as the story progressed.

The writing itself was excellent. I could tell every word was thought through with care, every chapter kept the story progressing at the perfect pace, revealing what we needed to know when we were ready to know it and holding back details that needed to stay secret, and the multi points of view were handled well. I felt as though I was on the journey along with the characters, easily able to picture them and the settings, as the descriptions were vivid and plentiful. There were frequent prayers on page to The Eternal One (God’s name in this book), and the faith of the characters is an important part of the story.

This is not a fluffy fantasy by any means, but it does contain many moments where I smiled and laughed at some of the dialogue, and there is a bit of a very sweet slow-burn, bodyguard/royal romance brewing. Throughout the story there were many intense moments where my own heart was pounding and moments where I audibly gasped at an unexpectedly gruesome scene. There are multiple descriptive mentions of deaths, injury, blood, and violence, so please keep that in mind if you are sensitive to those things, however I think they were all written well and not unnecessarily overly descriptive.

Content warnings:
Swearing/cursing: None
Sexual content: None, other than some threats/alluding to assault if non-compliant
Violence: Somewhat descriptive fights and battles, blood, injuries and deaths

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a rich fantasy story about corrupt rulers, unexpected heroes, and learning to trust God with your destiny.

Thank you to the author for the eARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given willingly.

Crown of Destiny by Ashton Dorow was one of those anticipated reads I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. And, not surprisingly, it did not disappoint. A thoroughly engaging tale humming with the resonance of King David’s story, yet unique in its details, this book was one I couldn’t put down.

Heroine Ayleth, chosen by the Eternal One for a destiny she never conceived, immediately captured my heart. I cherished her kind spirit and her youthful hesitations, even as I admired her hesitant compliance with the eternal plan. Kane, a hero sworn to protect, battled his own internal struggles with guilt, a weakness that even his sense of duty couldn't always overcome. It makes the story so raw and authentic when the main characters have these layered dimensions slowly revealed through the plot. The romantic tension in this story was so elegantly done that I found myself simultaneously frustrated and delighted with how things progressed.

I found myself repeatedly pausing, my heart stopping to comprehend the deep spiritual implications woven throughout the narrative. The prose flows effortlessly, making this book a pleasure to read and my absolute favorite type. This was an immersive story that snatched me away from everything familiar and submerged me in a new existence. I cherished how the author revealed God's presence through the minute, suspenseful elements of the unfolding narrative.

With each new chapter, I found myself eager to see how it would end while also wanting to patiently enjoy the story and its slow-burn, forbidden love, forced-proximity romance. So beautifully done, Dorow sews these thematic threads into the story with a literary precision that keeps them subtle in the best of ways. The satisfying ending left just enough that I can’t wait for more. Well worth the read, I highly recommend this novel.

Loved it. Loved. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of the writing of Ashton E. Dorow, and I have been eagerly awaiting Crown of Destiny. Thankfully, it did not disappoint.

Set in the kingdom of Aerilon, where a queen's fear of losing her throne has created a world in which silence is the safest choice, the story follows Ayleth, a humble shepherdess whose life is upended when she learns that the Eternal One has chosen her as the kingdom's next ruler. What follows is a thrilling journey of danger, betrayal, faith, and destiny as Ayleth is forced to flee for her life alongside the mysterious Kane, a protector she never expected to need.

The story is brilliantly written, with rich world-building that brings Aerilon vividly to life. Every setting feels carefully crafted and immersive. In fact, there is a certain library featured in the story that I would happily visit if it existed. The attention to detail makes the world feel both expansive and real.

The interaction between Ayleth and Kane is wonderfully dynamic and believable. Their relationship develops naturally amidst the challenges they face, adding both heart and depth to the adventure. The story is filled with action, determination, sacrifice, and romance, but what stood out most to me was its spiritual depth. The themes of faith, obedience, courage, and trust in the Eternal One, even when the path ahead seems impossible, are woven beautifully throughout the narrative.

This is a story that keeps you turning pages while also giving you meaningful truths to reflect on long after you've finished reading.

I highly recommend Crown of Destiny and cannot wait for book two. If this first instalment is any indication of what's to come, readers are in for an incredible series.

I was given a complimentary ARC of the book by the author, but the views and opinions are all my own.

Ashton does it again! One of my favourite authors returns with a brand new series — and it absolutely delivers.

Ayleth is a young woman who desires nothing more than a quiet life in a kingdom where speaking out comes at a great cost. When a prophecy marks her as the Eternal One’s chosen ruler of Aerilon, she wants no part of it. But a betrayal forces her hand, sending her on the run with the enigmatic Kane as her sole protector.

The character development is one of this book’s greatest strengths. Ayleth’s growth feels earned and deeply human, while Kane is the kind of character who stays with you long after the last page. One of my favourite reads inspired by a biblical tale — woven in beautifully and never forced.
From the moment I started, I could not put it down. Ashton has a remarkable gift for drawing readers in and keeping them there.

For anyone who loves Christian fantasy with genuine heart, meaningful stakes, and compelling characters — this one is not to be missed. I am very much looking forward to seeing where the next book in the series takes us.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Ashton Dorow’s writing is electric. Passionate, fun, and endlessly exciting, she has that rare ability to hook you from the very first page and never let go. I received this book from the author for free, but every thought here is entirely my own — and honestly, this story is just lovely.

This book has everything: adventure, excitement, love, intrigue, action, danger. The pacing is sharp, the world is vivid, and the emotional beats land beautifully. Dorow’s prose is superb, balancing intensity with heart in a way that kept me fully immersed.

One of my favorite aspects is the way this story echoes the King David narrative. I adore biblical retellings, and this one captures so many of the elements we love from that story while still feeling fresh, original, and deeply rooted in its own world. The parallels are thoughtful without ever becoming predictable, and the unique twists kept me eagerly turning pages.

I was hooked from the beginning and genuinely couldn’t put it down. Now I’m counting the days until book two — because if this installment is any indication, the rest of the series is going to be incredible.

Wow, what a story! I love that this fantasy novel was inspired by the Biblical King David's life, and yet is also very much its own story with twists and turns amid the familiar beats of David's life. I still can't decide whether my favorite part was the slow burn/protector relationship of the two main characters (soooo sweet!), or the way it tied into David's story (so well done!). Probably all of the above.

It made me not only desperate for book two, and to see what happens from here with these characters who've well and truly captured my heart (I need more!!), but have a whole new appreciation for what it might have been like for David as a young teen from nowhere being told he'd be king one day.

Brilliantly written and imagined, and I'm already looking forward to reading it again.

I received an early copy of this book from the author (thank you!!!) and all thoughts are my own. As well as the decision to go out and purchase a physical copy the second I finished it. Because yes, it was that good.
