Even though I'm not living in Korea, my parents were very keen to teach me basic Korean history. While learning and reading about it when I was younger, there was a huge frustration and sadness. Whenever I tried to discuss or explain these feelings to my fellow German classmates at that time, they wouldn't understand. And I noticed that if you never have been a very weak country, a victim of colonialism, you could never really understand.
But. We are still in need to talk about history and what happened in the past. There are many people in the world investing a lot of time and effort into not-forgetting, archiving and speaking. Trying to explain as best they can, especially to those who are not in the same place.
And I thank the author for creating this story and giving life to every character, they truly live within the pages. He not only focuses on the main character but also succeeds to give room for everyone around and behind the incident. I was quite surprised that he also took time and so much room for the bad guy.
It was a very interesting, intense read. But I'm not sure if I can say that I enjoyed it.
