Eleanor Grigson Cleans the House: A Novel

Quick, cozy-ish, aspirational. I read this in one day. Eleanor had the unsavory task of sorting through her late husband’s clutter, as well as a shared lifetime of aging, shabby, “unlovely” furnishings and housewares. She and her house were in desperate need of care. I’m sure there are so many who can relate to this, and this book will help so many find the courage to take the first steps toward reclaiming their space and enjoying some self-care. Very luckily, Eleanor has all the support that friends, family, professionals, and money can provide. Say the word and burly men haul it all out. She still has to do the emotional work, but not much physically. This is probably the dream scenario of declutterring. If only we could all live in a world where it was so easy! Well, I suppose we can for the hours it takes to read this book!

Eleanor Grigson Cleans The House by Siggy Patton
Eleanor is a widow who still lives in the house she and her husband bought and raised their family. Over time as her husband became ill things accumulated. Her family and friends were concerned about her continuing to live alone in those conditions.
If you are in a place where you really want to declutter your home this is a good book to get you thinking. It’s almost a self help guide! I found it to be a good story and could relate to much of the conflict and solution.

Sweet Pablum
This is a happily little fairy tale of a book which starts with a grieving widow living in a house hoarded by her deceased husband. Eleanor has forgotten how to live and her son, Billy, the tech bro millionaire, is going to change that. This is not literature, great writing or important fiction. It it is a sweet way to while away an afternoon.
This review lost a star due to the obvious grammatical errors in the following selection:
“Look, mom, the roof needs replaced and the wood rot needs addressed too. We know that,” he said, as if this were something any reasonable person could see. “But I’m going to have to get a general contractor in when Johnny’s guys are done—” “What, why?” Eleanor barked. She couldn’t help feeling like things were escalating quickly. Billy was patient. “Once the rotted wood is replaced, it’ll need painted.
I don't understand why current word using precludes the use of 'to be' or using gerunds. The wood rot needs to be addressed or needs addressing. The roof needs to be replaced or needs replacing. The wood doesn't need painting, it needs to be painted or the wood needs painting.

Interesting read
I enjoyed this book more than I expected. I am often frustrated with "Christian" books. I was happy to have a character involved in her church, although I'm one of "those LCMS" Lutherans 😉. I also appreciated that it wasn't her full identity, she didn't press other people or spout overused Bible phrases. And No bad language! I will say that this subject of keeping "things" as the person, resonated close to home. However, the amount of money they spent made me frustrated because now the change seems unattainable.

Elenor Grissom cleans the house
I read this in about six or seven hours that how good it was and such a light fun read. I saw myself in a couple of places and the words Grace spoke, spoke to me and made sense. All of the characters are awesome so very different from each other yet fit like a puzzle. They are the friends folks need in their lives. Elenor you watch her grow and become the person she wants to be. Billy and Grace all to predictable. I loved love this book

All The Feels
Totally unprepared for this. The layers of humanity and emotion in this novel about reestablishing a home after illness and dishevelment were thoughtfully and realistically presented. The friendships and family relationships were genuine and warm.

Read this book in one sitting!
This book felt like it was perfect for this time in my life. If I was in my twenties or thirties, I probably would not have loved it as much, but, as a woman in my sixties, the theme really resonated with me and it was very entertaining. This was definitely light reading, but it also left me with something to think about.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. I finished in two days while camping. It was one of those rare books where everything turns out exactly how you want. Even throughout the story, it’s just what you want to happen. You won’t be on the edge of your seat or stressed out. Just relaxing and lovely.

Great, and timely for me!
I’ve been staring at my clutter and wondered how to get started. This story was my motivation! Right away I carried a stack of old magazines to the recycling bin, gave my daughter some ceramic figurines she’s always liked, and took a pile of stuff to donate at the thrift store. Thank you, Siggi!

Was there a plot?
This book was chapter after chapter of nice things happening to and around this fluttering leaf. Boring! I read the whole thing waiting for a mishap or an epiphany of some kind but no such luck. I did learn how to clean out a closet for which I gave it two stars.

Wonderful read
I wasn't sure when I started reading if I would enjoy this book. I kept reading and got entranced with the writing, and the characters. I couldn't put it down. A great job of developing the story line to keep everything realistic.

I really enjoyed this story of Eleanor discovering herself whilst de-cluttering her house after her husband’s death. The beautiful relationships with her family and friends were well written and the author manages the very-misunderstood problem of hoarding in a positive and caring manner.

I really enjoyed this book although l couldn’t help thinking that money made it possible an ordinary widow might well struggle to turn things around to such a degree otherwise.
