Daniel Ausema grew up in West Michigan, surrounded by orchards, hay fields, glacial lakes, and stands of oak and maple trees. He earned his BA in English Literature and Spanish in 2000. After working in experiential and alternative education for a while, he moved to Colorado with his family and settled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. He is now a stay-at-home father. His fiction and poetry have appeared in dozens of publications.
Unique and atmospheric, and intriguing I was given a copy to read to review without strings attached. I can honestly say I was riveted by the story and was left wanting to read the 2nd novella asap. The world is truly unique and atmospheric. The novellas are spin offs from D Ausema’s Spire City series but take the story in a totally different direction, or at least novella one seems to be doing that. I thoroughly adored the character who was on a mission to not only bring back the dead body of a colleague from the Moth Plateau but discover what happened to him or report back to his boss if there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Of course there were. But this is also a journey that introduces us to the strange world of the Moth Plateau, and the prose does an entrancing, haunting, and mystical job of immersing the reader in it. While our main character gains a suspicion regarding those responsible for the murder, the actual truth of what’s happening is not nailed down. The sequels will undoubtedly take us on a more twisty path of discovery.
