Nineteen years ago, Erin Baker’s sister, Claire, was kidnapped from a park in Miami. Although Claire was found four years later, the tragedy had long-lasting effects on both Claire and Erin, who stills blames herself. Now a CIA officer with three martial arts black belts, Erin has dedicated her life to defending those unable to protect themselves. Then a child disappears near her home, bringing up long buried memories, and Erin becomes convinced there’s a link to her sister’s kidnapping case.
When several children go missing near Washington D.C., FBI agent Alex Donovan, who specializes in locating missing children, is charged with heading the investigation. Then Erin Baker shows up, claiming to have seen a potential suspect that fits the description of The Magician, an alleged child abductor so elusive many believe he’s just a myth. Before long, Erin and Alex find themselves embroiled in a horrifying world where children are stolen and trafficked. Now it’s a race against time to find the missing children before it’s too late. But the closer they get to the truth, they and everyone they love become targets for a killer.
With deeply-drawn characters, a relentless pace, and a powerful plot that echoes the most shocking headlines, Out of Reach is a suspenseful thriller that will keep readers turning the pages right up to the suspenseful and nerve-wracking end.
Rogue agents from both the FBI and CIA have to work together to rescue a young kidnapped boy. The story is brilliantly told with image-building flows of colorful descriptions. The characters are developed to create emotional relationships with the reader, and a number of minor characters fill out the story with their subplots. Some violence provides excitement, but the major feeling is of suspense and foreboding. Erin Baker is a strong female lead, but not without her own weaknesses. I would call this a great read.
Lots of action and suspense! Who can stop a child trafficking ring, especially if the head has diplomatic immunity? This is the task of CIA agent Erin Baker, and her reluctant partner, FBI agent Alec Donovan. For Erin, this is personal! Her sister had been kidnapped when she was 7yo and discovered when she was 11yo...but Claire has never been the same. Now, many years later, Erin decides to get to the bottom of these kidnapped kids cases. What she uncovers is horrific...is Erin and Alec too late to save the most recent missing boy? Great storyline; well written.
I thought this was a very good book with lots of action. Some of the scenes were possibly a little over the top, but it is fiction and anything can happen. Erin Baker is someone you would like to have as your friend as she is a very strong female, but still can be down to earth.
This was the first book that I have read by this author so was pleasantly surprised. It seemed to be about the right length so you didn't get tired of what was happening. It is about kidnapping children though, so if that subject matter is not one that you like, then I would stay away from this one.
Even though Erin Baker is CIA, you don't really have any spy stuff in this one. There are some things that she does because of her training, but is mostly the hunt for the kidnappers.
I am giving this 4 out of 5 stars. I liked it, but it wasn't great!
Erin Baker is a CIA officer, and now she is teaching martial arts training to others. She is a black belt and can take care of herself. But, right now, she is trying to help FBI Agent Donovan find a missing boy.
When she was younger (19 years ago), when she was with her sister, Claire and supposed to be watching her, she left her to go with her friends. The biggest mistake, Erin ever made and now she is paying for it. Her sister, Claire, was missing and everyone thought she was dead. When she was found 4 years later, the family was trying to heal. But, such trauma would never leave Claire and right now she was in a mental hospital suffering with PTSD.
Trying to take care of Claire's daughter and her career, Erin loves to go on runs to clear her mind. On this day, when running through the park, she sees something that she remembers after all those years. The man is standing there, selling ice cream to children in the park. When she tries to chase him, she loses site of him. Maybe she imagined it? When she goes home, the news tells of a girl that was taken from the park, and now Erin knows that the man she saw was really the kidnapper of her sister all those years ago.
But, with Erin, sacrifice her career and her life to prove her theory? Or will they just think she is making it up. Teamed with FBI Donovan, he believes her and they go on the chase for the man they have called the Magician all these years!!
When her mother died, C.I.A. agent Erin Baker left her undercover service overseas to take care of her niece and her emotionally damaged sister Claire. While at the park, Erin feels like she knows the man entertaining children. When a child is abducted from the park that day, Erin realizes that it is the same man that abducted her sister nineteen years ago. Erin will work with F.B.I. agent Alex Donovan to find the monster that is abducting children and who is behind him. I received a free copy of this book from eBook Discovery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I recommend this thriller. I love how Erin and Alex go around the rules to find the abducted child. The story is very suspenseful. It also gives a glimpse of child abduction and slavery without seeing the horrific details. This is a fast read and a terrific start to a new series.
I like that the romance was not really a thing- these are two people on a mission. They aren’t even attempting to derail anything. There’s a ‘in any other circumstances I’d be into you’ and they clearly form a bond, but romance isn’t a subplot. Sure, there's a possibility there at end, but they only deal with it when everything is said and done'. It's refreshing and not something you see too often in the general.
The end was a a bit rushed and unsettling (in that depressing and realistic way of ‘rich people never have consequences’, but overall the pace and plot was entertaining.
Out of Reach was a mixed read for me. It had a noticeably slow start, and it took a while before I felt properly pulled into the story. Even so, there was something about the plot and the characters that kept me turning the pages.
Once it finally picked up, the tension and pacing improved, and I found myself more invested in seeing where it would go. It’s not a fast or explosive thriller, but it does build enough curiosity to keep you reading to the end.
A solid read overall, just not one that grabbed me right away. I will read the next in the series though, I think the characters can develop well
Another book that I’ve been interested in reading for the last 9 years and have finally gotten around to it!
I am happy that I’ve tackled this novel and enjoyed it so thoroughly! I love the main character Erin, with all of her courage, spot-on intuition, and her strength.
This novel centres around the kidnapping of children which also ties in with aspects of Erin’s childhood. I was hooked by the plot and loved the way the story unfolded. I was eager to read and put together the pieces as I went!
All in all, an excellent read with a potential love interest that I have a feeling may be further seen in the next novels of the series!
Oh my goodness! “Out of Reach” is, by far, one of the most amazing books I have read in a while. While the plot is somewhat common, the execution of it was done beautifully. Erin Baker brought so much as the main character, and I love her interaction with Donovan, and the others. I would happily read a series surrounding all of these characters.

Action packed, terror abounds, in the race against time. Erin Baker, whose sister was kidnapped nineteen years ago, teams up with FBI Agent Alex Donovan, to find a girl and a boy who have recently been kidnapped. Erin recognizes something about the man that captures the little girl that reminds her of nineteen years before. She believes the same person kidnapped both people.

What an exciting story! This is an action filled story and keeps getting better with each page. I am very impressed with this author, she draws you into the story so expertly, she makes you a character and you can hear, see and smell what the main characters are experiencing and then you get to the end, and, well, you'll see!.....
The story will pull reader in from page one but with the predictability the story falls flat. Since the story line covers Child Abduction, Haman Slavery and all kind of violence acts it was able to avoid graphic details. With the story being predicable I found myself skipping pages to find the book. Thank you to netgalley for the copy of Out Of Reach by Patricia Lewin.
You are roped into this story right from the get-go. It is action-packed without being full of blood and guts and yet gut-wrenching, knowing that abductions like this really do happen. This is a must-read! I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
This book was so good. It kept me going from page to page wanting to know what came next. The plot was carried out extremely well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers and suspense. The female mc is a strong lead with a no hold bars attitude. “I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. Sometimes an "edge-of-your-seat" read, this book held my interest throughout. Although I anticipated the way the book would end, I was a little confused the way the author wrote it and even went back to reread the crucial parts to make sure I hadn't missed anything (which I hadn't). For this reason, I can't give this a 5* rating. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
Didn't know what to expect from this story, but pleased with how it unfolded and resolved. Good character development, as well as intriguing plot, with an absence of too much romance, made this a very good read - in my opinion. There is some use of stereotypes, but not too much.
This book is very well written and has great characters. The plot and story are very good as well, but there are a few minor details that are off. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
Patricia Lewen is a master of suspense. She does a great job creating rogue agents. I read this book in a day. I enjoyed these characters and hope to have more in the Erin Baker series. I received this book from eBook Discovery. I am voluntarily posting this review. This is my honest review.
Realistic characters, or at least as we would imagine ourselves in the story line, in an unimaginable situation that gives you hope that the good “guys” will do what it takes to save the day. You can’t help but get caught up in the action. Look forward to reading her other books.
I just finished listening to this book and I can’t remember the number of times I send- “oh no” or “NO”. It was just the right amount of intensity to not overwhelm but kept me on my toes. Looking forward to reading the next one.
Excellent thriller. Excellent main characters. They were appropriately flawed but not to the point where you get frustrated with their decisions. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
