Love, revenge... and the law of unintended consequences
While attending his brother's funeral, Mark suspects a second murder is being planned. He evades his enemies and prepares his attack when love strikes. The two forces of nature will battle for Mark's soul with tragic consequences.
It started one night and followed me for days and weeks and months. How I prayed it would stop! Little did I know the ending would turn out to be the worst part of it.
I hear the sound of the phone like in a dream. I wish it would stop after two rings, like the postman used to, but the obvious criminal intent of this annoying instrument of obstruction makes me think it will not relent so easily. It's three o'clock at night. A wicked hour for a call. I pick up and a strange voice, coming from the other end of the world, tells me that my brother is dead. And this is how the nightmare begins.
Six days have passed since I received the call. Yesterday we buried my brother. I hate their criminal minds. Tomorrow is predicted to be another day in hell.
Murder My Love A now outdated theory postulates that the measure of a man is best revealed during love and war.
After his brother is murdered, Mark fears the action plan calls for a second killing, this time his own.
He decides to escape and plot his revenge. But with murder on the mind, while evading his pursuers, love strikes. The two forces of nature will battle for Mark's soul with tragic consequences.
We have maybe a short story worth of material wrapped in dialogue worthy of Garth Merenghi's DARKPLACE.
The first part of the book looked like a high school vocabulary lesson where a words were chosen for their numbers of syllables rather than tonal qualities. I finished reading this in hopes of a punchline but instead found a deus ex machine absurdity.
Murder My Love kept my attention and entertained me. This mans life and profession are a little unbelievable at times, in the end i dontd you will understand I liked the first person narrative. Worth a read

The Good: At 107 pages, "Murder My Love" was a swift read. Mark, the narrator, leads the reader through a rather uncomplicated noirish tale that is rife with talk of -- uh -- murder with a splash of -- um -- love. At its length, "Murder My Love" is a passable bit of escapism for a summer day at the pool or a rainy evening with the window cracked.
The Bad: The novella could have been shorter. At times, Torm was too verbose with his prose, adding multiple clauses to sentences that could have been simplified, wriggling around the point or context, like worms unaware of their fate until hooked, cast into the ocean of... See, isn't that distracting? This was not "Ulysses," so the overabundance of commas watered down the novella's pulp appeal.
Mark is vague about his profession for the first few pages for no particular reason other than to potentially annoy the reader.
The dialogue is contrived. Especially notable is the scene at the airport regarding a boarding pass. It was reminiscent of the character Wesley in Frank Miller's run on "Daredevil." Whether it was purposefully pretentious has no bearing because it just didn't work. Nobody talks like that.
There were inconsistencies, such as the University of Hawaii being referred to as both UH and HU.
Sometimes Torm had a rough time with word choices. At one point, Mark noted that "her tone of voice" had "visibly changed." That's not even possible.
As far as characterizations, it's hard to believe Mark (who all but describes himself as Batman with all those plans) would fall in love as easily as he did considering the amount of time he spent with his interest and what he suspects of her.
The Ugly: Understanding that this might be an ARC, some typos are passable. This book had too many. Also, there are odd page breaks that leave the reader wondering if the next paragraph is the start of a new section or a continuation of the previous. The text isn't justified, which isn't a crucial trait but could be easier on the eyes. Sometimes multiple quotation marks were used in a single quote.
I received a signed copy of this book from a GR Giveaway so much thanks to the author for sending it my way. This is actually a novella, running at 110 pages.
The novella starts off rather cryptic regarding the death of the narrator, Mark’s brother and Mark’s intent for revenge and self-perseverance. Mark wasn’t a particularly likable narrator and I found his “love” incredibly superficial. I understand there’s not enough time in the short span of the book to elaborate on it. The author tried to develop it more during the plane ride Mark shared with Lana, his love, but I couldn’t see it. I also felt the interaction between the two was awkward.
Criticisms regarding the romance aside, this was a quick and nice read. The story picked up once Lana wasn’t in the scenes. The text seemed a lot less awkward and way more interesting when Mark described how he plotted and executed his revenge. Though, every time he mentions his love for Lana I cringe a little.
This is a really easy read which seems to drift along through the crazy life of professional criminals and hit men. We get to see how easy good judgement and planning, along with a healthy dose of luck, make murder seem to be a normal everyday event. The fact that our main protagonist fell in love with a girl he met purely by chance at an airport check in desk tells us that even hardened killers have a softer, more humane side sometimes. The illusion is completely shattered when he hunts her down and kills her for selling his details to another of the circuits hit men... All this after he discovers she is the daughter of the man he has just killed...
A great short read filled to the brim with aggression, violence and murder.
This short story was somewhat underdeveloped for my liking. It felt more like an outline of a story, rather than the story itself. The characters were superficial and not very interesting and you could deduce the plot twists before they even happened. I like a good murder novel, but this was lacking the suspense. I won a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway, thanks to the author for signing it.
This is a great quick story that is full of suspense. I think I read it in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review, which in no way influenced my opinion of this book. I hope you enjoy it as well.
*I received this book for free from Goodreads First Reads.*
This was a short read accomplished in one sitting. I had trouble getting into it since there was not a lot of character development. The writing felt choppy and there were many errors.
This was a Goodreads win. This was a very short story. I'm sure I read it in under two hours. Felt like it was rather choppy if that makes any sense so three stars is what it earned.
