With one volume to go, I wasn’t expecting much from this series, but it really went a bit hard in a good way this particular instalment. It also doesn’t hurt that the student/teacher storyline doesn’t appear once.

No, we are mostly dialled in on Shizuku and Saori, who continue to navigate the choppy waters of being together, yet not being together. Saori is finally into Shizuku, but the latter feels like a replacement for Saori’s sister.

What an excellent time for Miki, Shizuku’s sugar momma, to re-insert herself into Shizuku’s life. This whole section is remarkably tense for such a less-than-serious manga and it’s rather impressive how stressful it gets.

Miki is, like most of our “rougher” characters, running from life rather than facing it. In Miki’s case, that’s down to just cramming as much fun into her life as she can get. It’s not especially healthy for her and it definitely isn’t for Shizuku.

So, when Shizuku goes with Miki to protect Saori and you can see Shizuku backsliding into her delinquent mode, putting up with Miki’s predations like she has zero worth, it’s almost as bad as watching somebody spiral back into addiction.

Genuinely, this is the best arc the series has ever done and, I assure you, will ever do. It treats the thorny topic of turning your life around and trying to be better with respect and shows just how hard it can be to struggle against your nature and your circumstances.

It goes right back to being silly and not so serious afterward, but that whole part is worth showing up for. If I stayed with the series for so long and this was my reward? That’ll do, for my money.

The other chapters are about Shinohara and Heke and their situation, which remains about the same, minus the addition of Shinohara’s mother coming to visit and staying with her daughter and her ‘close friend’.

It’s not the most engaging coming out story (or not, it remains unfinished at this point), but it’s a solid examination at having to hide yourself from family and not being able to say the things you want to say.

Not to mention, it doesn’t hurt that Heke’s natural laid-back style meshes really well with Shinohara’s mom, making for a fun dynamic and also justifying some of Heke’s more questionable personality traits.

We’ll gloss over the bonus manga where Heke gets Shinohara drunk and takes advantage of her being extra frisky and leave it on a good note. That bugged me a little, but not enough to detract from the bulk of the volume.

4 stars - if this was mostly business as usual, it would be yet another mid volume of an unremarkable manga. It may not justify its entire existence here, but it does deliver far better than it ever has to this point. I wish it had always been this well-written.
