Hello Readers. Water In A Broken Glass is about a young sculptor who finds herself in the middle of a love triangle with a handsome accountant and a beautiful bookstore owner.
This was my first time reading anything written by Odessa Rose. I wasn't sure what my reading experience was going to be, but I have to say, I was pleasantly and amazingly surprised. Upon reading the opening line, it was apparent Odessa had talent and that she probably had an MFA. I was curious, so I researched her and my assumptions were correct. Odessa's writing is the kind that makes literary agents, editors, and publishers salivate. She's a brilliant wordsmith, a master of metaphor, and a wonderful storyteller.
The story is about Tonya, a talented, smart, and complex young sculptress who's able to appreciate shapes, colors, and forms in her environment that most of us take for granted. She’s been given an assignment by her mentor to recreate the face of a young girl who was killed. Tonya struggles to finish the assignment but what is even more dauting than that is her struggle with her sexual identity. Told that homosexuality is an abomination by her mother, the last thing she wants to do is disappoint. But when she encounters drop dead gorgeous Satin, her world is turned upside down. Then to make matters even more complicated, she's dating Malcolm, a man who could be The One. Tonya vacillates between the two of them, trying to deal with her feelings, fighting to the bitter end to honor what she has been brought up to believe.
Wondering what decision she would make had me swiping my phone like a crazy woman, that along with Odessa's beautiful, imaginative writing that swept me into a whirlwind of suspense, anger, frustration, and laughter.
Love this story and the author. She weaves a tale that makes you want to sit along the sidelines and hope to capture a glimpse of their life in real life. Characters are well developed and true to life. I have read this book at least twelve times...seriously it gives me life and hope and dreams. I want to meet Satin, love her..tell her I can do better than..lol
This piece by newcomer Odessa Rose explores overlapping themes of sexuality and self-discovery. Set in the accurately described DC/Baltimore metro area, this art- and forensics-oriented narrative is lush with concrete detail, punctuated by an unexpected sub-plot twist. Broken Glass does the job for a rainy day.
I am moved… with a TBR that spans ten pages, somehow my heart led me to this book that has been sitting in my Kindle library for years. For an old-school black lesbian, this brought back the days of wondering why, what if, what will they think…and the undeniable feeling that I owed myself the courtesy of walking in my truth. This novel was brilliant. I finished it in six hours and wanted to read it for six more years. Brava, Ms. Rose…..
