Dragged Into the Maw

Rate this book
TWO FUGITIVES. SHATTERED MEMORIES. A HUNT WITH NO ESCAPE.

Carl has been running for what feels like an eternity. Branded as a loose end by the Black Veil, his only advantage is a power he barely has under control.

Elena wakes up in a police station with no memory of who she is or how she got there. As she’s released into the outside world, she begins to uncover secrets and powers of her own. Little does she know, she’s wanted too.

When their paths collide, they discover they’re being stalked by Code; a relentless, humanised machine built for one purpose: to bring them in alive. But where they’re wanted for is a place that holds dark secrets of its own… and something twisted waiting in the shadows.

As bodies fall and the truth begins to surface, Carl and Elena must decide who they can trust and how far they’re willing to go to escape a system designed to never let them leave alive.

I was given an ARC for this book, written by a good friend.

Not only is this story captivating and thought-provoking, it is extremely well written with so much details. It brings the characters to life - I felt like I knew the characters personally.

To only have written two books, Will has excelled and I look forward to reading number three.

I read this following Mr Lee's debut novel, Gone Before the Moon and I was certainly not disappointed!! I loved the first book but this one tops it. The characters are written well and overall writing has improved! If you have read either of these books I would say your missing out! Coming from someone who usually only reads Fantasy books 😍 a hats off to you will 🙏

wow is the only way to start this review.

it builds on book one in a way that is impossible to understand, book sent me to space this one has me in the Andromeda galaxy. the rich a surrealist world the author creates builds in your mind like watching a movie, the characters jump from the page almost like they are in the room with you.

the graphic nature of the writing had me enthralled immediately and constantly throughout. I felt what each character felt as they felt it whether is was happy or like a punch to the gutt I knew it.

I am eagerly awaiting book 3

This book feels like a level up from book 1. I thoroughly enjoyed it in particular the tournament. I’m glad Boot sent bone saw or whatever he was called on his arse. Again this has the thriller aspect where you want to jump into the book and help uncover what is going on. Elena’s powers were most intriguing and I loved the fact she had to discover who she was and remember what she had forgot. Great sequel!!!

Ark Read sent via the Author

I was asked to Ark read this authors 2nd book as I absolutely loved his 1st release Gone Before The Moon..

if i could give it more stars I would!!

OMG this book has somehow surpassed gone before the moon!! and I dont say that lightly!!

This book is a supernatural thriller

it follows Elana and Carl as they try to get to the bottom of The Veil and what it is!

along the way they are both pulled into so many dangerous situations,

this book literally keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through!

its written so well!! you are convinced you know whats happening and then the complete opposite happens!.

I couldn't put this book down!!! its got all the tropes you need for a thriller this book definitely gives stranger things vibes.

The writing style is so strong and you really feel like you are in those situations with the characters, you hear there screams, see what they are seeing! a fully immensive read!
the details and descriptions that are given are phenomenal. you can almost smell what they smell on some parts.
the fight scenes throughout are so well described and the last fight scene!!! WOW!!!
and then the end of the book!!!! left me literally shouting into my pillow!!

I cannot reccomend this book enough!! I absolutely LOVED IT!!!

Will well done on another amazing book!! i cannot wait to see what comes next from you and the veil files..

thank you so much for allowing me to Ark read this for you!

I received this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Dragged Into the Maw follows Elena, a woman who wakes up in a police station with no memory of who she is, and Carl, a fugitive trying to do the right thing. When their paths collide, they discover they’re both wanted. Not to be killed… but to be captured. The big question is: why?

From the very beginning, I was hooked.

Just like in the first book, the characters are incredibly well written. You can’t help but care about them and want to know more about their pasts, their choices, and where their journey is going. This is completely down to William’s brilliant writing style.

His descriptions of the monsters are especially impressive. They’re so vivid that you almost feel like you’re right there with the characters, facing them. It really adds to the atmosphere and tension of the story.

The storyline kept me wanting more and more, and I loved that it wasn’t predictable. Every twist felt fresh, which made the reading experience even more enjoyable.

This is book two in The Black Veil Files series, but it can be read as a standalone. However, I’d definitely recommend reading the first book as well for the full experience.

I honestly have no suggestions for improvement. The only thing I want is for the next book to come out as soon as possible!

Highly recommended for fans of mystery, suspense, and supernatural elements.

The Black Veil Files book 2 is a more mature, darker and gritty story that Gone before the moon. Lives torn apart, more unique takes on the supernatural/paranormal creatures, terrifying characters meet a new cast flavoured with returning favourites. All wrapped up in the easy to follow, accessible writing that William Lee gave us in book 1

We follow Elena and Carl both characters we were introduced to briefly in book 1, Elena has no memories and Carl is in hiding following the aftermath of Gone Before the Moon. They are both being hunted by Code.

As the story progresses you are introduced to more of this world, more of the secrets reveal and literal hell is thrown at our characters. As they get to grips with themselves and meet things from their nightmares can they survive another round with the increasingly infamous black veil and its allies.

I will say the villains in this are quirky and awful (in the best way) but there is a genius take on a supernatural creature in here that is NEXT level and I loved it.

Read Gone before the moon, then be dragged in the maw with book 2 you won’t regret it. Get it on release day February 20th.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Supernatural Squid Game vibes but x 1000

I rated the first book five stars because it was absolutely amazing and set the scene perfectly for the rest of the series. Going into book two, I had no expectations because I genuinely did not know what was coming. I do not usually read supernatural books, but this series has completely converted me. Six stars without hesitation.

This instalment is more mature, darker and even better written than the first. It feels more confident, more layered and more immersive. The dark humour woven throughout is perfectly balanced. I genuinely cackled at times, and that levity made the emotional moments hit even harder. The contrast amplifies everything.

I honestly think this book is even stronger than the first, which is saying something because I had no complaints about book one. This one just feels bolder.

The character work is exceptional. The arcs, the flaws, the relationships and the emotions all feel layered and authentic.

Elena is phenomenal. She has officially secured a place on my list of favourite female characters of all time. She is resilient, complex and unapologetically determined. What makes her so compelling is not just her strength, but her humanity. She feels real in every sense.

Carl is incredibly easy to love. His devotion, his steadiness and his quiet strength make him stand out in such a refreshing way.

And my aweet baby Milton. Absolute MVP vibes. His presence brings perfectly timed comedic relief, and his clever, slightly chaotic personality adds so much charm to the dynamic of the group. Every scene he is in feels brighter.

The antagonists are some of the most charismatic I have read in a supernatural thriller. Witty, sharp and unsettlingly magnetic, they carry a presence that lingers long after their scenes end. Another one to add to the 'book boyfriend' / 'hear me out' list. That balance between menace and charm is incredibly difficult to achieve, but it works brilliantly here.

Plot-wise, the pacing is relentless. The stakes feel high from the beginning and never truly let up. There is a constant sense of tension that keeps you turning the pages. The way threads from the first book are woven into this instalment feels seamless and rewarding.

The darker elements are bold and unsettling in the best way. The morrally questionable situations that make up the bulk of the plot , add a layer of realism beneath the supernatural aspects.

The imagery is vivid and immersive. I actually winced a few times!

The action sequences are intense, the atmosphere is thick with tension, and the emotional weight behind it all is undeniable.

This book feels bigger, braver and deeply impactful.

And that ending? I need the next book immediately.

This is exceptional. Truly.

thank you to the author for my copy.

Unhinged bad guys, shadowy groups, conspiracies that run deep, organised crime rings, and humans with supernatural powers, there's no wonder I picked this book up! It was a high energy read that follows Carl and Elena after their escape in the last book. It has multiple POV chapters and swiftly swaps between them all keeping up the fast pace.

Carl is using vigilante justice, trying to use the powers he's been given for good and evade those that are still seeking to drag him back to the laboratory for more experiments and testing. Elena is trying to piece together her memories after waking up in a police station. The trail of breadcrumbs she follows leads her to Carl. Both of them are being pursued relentlessly by Code and must do anything they can to avoid being captured and dragged back into the shadowy organisations clutches. They tumble into an underground world neither of them were ready for in their bid to evade him.

The ending has a twist you won't see coming and means I'm now on tenterhooks waiting for the next book!

Amazing! I really enjoyed book 1, Gone Before the Moon, but this one topped even that! The way Will writes is so captivating and vivid that I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I read it. I can picture it all so well it feels like I watched a film of it, and that is purely down to the talent of the author. I read it very quickly, I didn’t want to put it down because you care about the characters and you NEED to find out what happens, I can’t wait for the next one!!

Amazing progress from the first book in the series. From the start, the book takes you straight into the action. I can't wait to read more of the series from this author and find out what is beneath it all. I 100% recommend this book and author to anyone looking for their next read. As an avid thriller/true crime reader, I was not sure about this book series at first. I was so wrong and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the universe that this author is creating. Love, love, love.

I was given the opportunity to receive this as an ARC, and it did not disappoint!
I loved the first book in the series, "Gone Before the Moon" and I loved this book just as much... If not more!
The character development was great, and the depth that we explore the lore the world William has created was so well written.
It had me feeling so many things I didn't expect, and putting it down was a real challenge, the writing is well paced, things happen quick enough to keep me reading, but not so fast that I get fatigue.
Another fantastic book by William.

Thank you to Will for letting me ARC read Dragged into the Maw!
I have been waiting for this second book of The Black Veil series!

In Dragged into the Maw, we follow the story of two fugitives. Carl and Elena, both with different stories and pasts until their paths collide. We follow them in their escapade where they realise they’re being stalked by Code. In this tale, they must learn who they can trust in order to escape a system that was never going to let them leave alive.

I already knew from the prologue that I was going to be in for an intense story and it did not disappoint. The early chapters had me gasping and the more I read on, the more I gasped. Some characters we had already met in book one that made a welcoming entrance in book two. The new characters in this book were also very welcomed additions. I firmly believe that every character had their purpose and were written into the book really well.

One of the memorable comedic moments in the book was definitely the emergency jelly babies. Once you read the book, you’ll understand and it honestly makes me want to start carrying my own emergency jelly babies because it makes sense. You never know when you might need them.

With the story following Carl and Elena, when I tell you that their first meeting was amazing, it’s an understatement. It was a cool entrance on Carl’s behalf and you could picture exactly how it was in your head the way it was described. All of the fight scenes were perfectly described and consuming. You think you know what’s going to happen next, you don’t. They say to expect the unexpected, well, with Mr Lee, you can’t do that because he keeps you on your toes.

I thought that the first book was intense and action packed and Dragged into the Maw is definitely a step up from it. More intensity and more action. It just made you want to keep reading and find out who was who and what was what and then what would happen next. Finishing the book, I’m ready for book three. I need it now, I have to know what goes on next in the series.

2nd book in the Black Veil Files series & it didn't hold back! - rating 4.5stars.

Characters:
Carl (MMC) was taken from his home & experimented on, but he's escaped & has the bounty hunter after him - Code, he's a robot whose main objective is to find Carl & bring him back to the lab.
We 1st meet Elena (MFC) when she's very disorientated & has just been picked up by the police for stealing, but she doesn't know why, who or where she is! so she sets out to find the missing pieces of her puzzle, but with the ever nagging feeling that she's being watched!!

When these two meet you are catapulted into a fast paced story of Secret Societies, fight clubs, suspense, supernatural powers, intrigue & found family, all wrapped together with some beautifully descriptive narrative that will immerse you into this world completely.

Just think Umbrella Academy meets Hunger Games & you will understand the flavour of this book. If like me you love those kind of vibes then you will love this book - 100% recommend this series.

* Thank you to William Lee for the free ARC copy of this e-book, I'm leaving this review voluntarily*

If you have read 'Gone Before the Moon' then this is 100% a must read, following on from the great story and first instalment of the 'Black Veil Files' 'Dragged Into the Maw' is another amazing story from this great author. I am so happy to have been included in the ARC team for this book, I was not disappointed, again. I would definitely recommend to anyone, read these books, you are missing out on a great story if you don't. With a cast of new characters, this book follows one of the characters from the first book, as he develops his skills, I am not going to go into detail on the story, as I want you to find out for yourself. absolute amazing story, again. I would like to congratulate Mr. Lee, as he is a great author, with a great story to tell. and I am definitely looking forward to the next instalment in this series, if the intensity of the stories increase at the same rate as the difference between this and the first of the series. then we are in for a series of treats that will just keep adding to each other.

I read this as an ARC. Thank you to the publisher for an early copy. I was eagerly anticipating this book after enjoying Gone Before the Moon 🌙. However, I wouldn’t say it’s essential to have read the first book to read this one. This book features a lot of fast paced action as the protagonist’s try and uncover the shadowy organisation called the Black Vail who are experimenting on them. Carl and Elena are our protagonists and we follow them as they fight to uncover the truth about themselves and the deadly hunt they find themselves in. This book has stranger things, the umbrella academy vibes and I am sure it will be a massive success.

I received an ARC copy from the author - thanks again Will

4.5 stars rounded!

The book is a mysterious thriller intertwined with experiments. The second book in the series follows a storyline of Carl and Elena.

Carl continues on from the first book but can be read separately, though I highly recommend the first book!

Elena is trying to find out what happened to her and why she is getting mysterious headaches.

The story is written beautifully and with conviction. You feel the emotions and screams with the characters.

I found I was there cheering on and booing certain characters in order to find out about The Veil.
