Chase Dupree has always played by the rules.

From the outside, his life is enviable. He’s a devoted husband, a hands-on father of two young daughters, and a man doing everything “right.” But chronic pain lingers. Pressure mounts. A quiet sense of underachievement gnaws at him. He’s begun to suspect his best days are already behind him.

Then, at dinner with a compulsive friend, Chase is introduced to a life-altering loophole hiding in plain sight.

In the booming world of mobile sports betting, tiny inefficiencies between competing platforms can be exploited for guaranteed profit.

No gambling. No risk. Just math.

And tens of thousands of dollars a month from his phone.

With LineSniper, an advanced analytics platform built by charismatic founder Aaron Ramsey to hunt these mismatches faster than any human could, the results are immediate and intoxicating. Chase's winnings grow. So do the rationalizations.

Guided by an enigmatic online figure known only as ArbOracle, data, deception, and desire begin to collide. What begins as a clever side hustle becomes an all-consuming second life: one fueled by numbers, adrenaline, and the illusion of control.

Spanning living rooms and corporate boardrooms, Italy and Las Vegas, Beating the Books follows Chase while he outsmarts a machine that never intended to lose. As his marriage strains, his body falters, and the industry he’s exploiting begins tightening its grip, Chase is forced to confront a truth he has spent months trying to outrun: in a world built on edges, every win exacts a cost.

Inspired by true events, Beating the Books is a propulsive thriller about digital temptation, modern addiction, and the devastating psychological and domestic toll of living life behind a screen. It ultimately asks a single, unsettling question:

"What is winning worth?"

A gripping debut and hard to put down

Mike Scott’s Beating the Books is an impressive first novel that kept me hooked from start to finish. Scott has a strong writing style and does a great job developing characters you genuinely care about.

The story takes readers from Washington, DC to the Midwest to Las Vegas, delivering plenty of twists and turns along the way. Chase Dupree—a devoted husband and father of two becomes consumed by online gambling arbitrage. What begins as a way to provide more for his family slowly starts to take over his life.

This is both a fascinating and timely look at the world of online gambling, the money and power behind it, and how easy it can be to get in over your head. The emotional journey—from excitement to despair and ultimately redemption—felt real and compelling.

It’s also a cautionary tale about risk, addiction, and the impact these choices can have on family and relationships. I genuinely couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended.

Mike Scott’s debut novel, Beating the Books, is a gripping, character-driven thriller that plunges readers into the high-stakes world of sports betting arbitrage. Blending psychological tension with data-driven suspense, the novel explores the moral complexity behind the pursuit of seemingly risk-free profit.

At the center of the story is Chase Dupree, a responsible family man whose fascination with betting algorithms slowly consumes him. Scott skillfully charts Chase’s transformation, turning what could have been a sterile subject—odds-making and algorithms—into a compelling examination of temptation, control, and personal identity. The tension lies not only in whether Chase will succeed, but in what his success may cost him.

Scott populates the novel with a diverse cast of relatable characters, allowing readers to find emotional connection throughout the story. His natural, flowing prose keeps the narrative engaging without becoming bogged down in technical detail, making complex concepts accessible to a wide audience.

As the plot unfolds, Beating the Books keeps readers guessing while highlighting the dilemmas faced in an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world—one where balance is elusive and having it all may be impossible. Thought-provoking and suspenseful, Beating the Books is a must-read for anyone searching for their next compelling novel.

Crazily captivating. Hard to believe the sportsbooks allow arbitrage to exist, and how much ordinary people are making from the loophole (expertly and clearly explained in the book). Even though it's fiction, the author reads like a Michael Lewis. Informs like one of his books, while also being wildly entertaining and really giving pause about the impact tech is having on the world today. True page turner. It's like the Big Short, Flash Boys, Uncut Gems, Ozark, and American Kingpin all rolled into one book. Hope this is just the start for this author.

Didn’t want to put this one down. The characters - Tara and Chase in particular - felt like friends to whom we can all relate. More than once I was literally yelling at them while reading. Stellar character arcs across the board, from the overworked parents to the tech founder to the influencer to the seasoned CEO. This one draws you in and doesn’t let go. It would make a great TV series if someone picked it up.

Sleeper pick. Recommended to me by a trusted voracious reader. Deeply complex. Characters are grappling with parenthood, midlife crisis, mortality, desire, temptation, addiction, tech, lives increasingly lived behind screens. Superbly written. Leaves you screaming at the end and thinking for days after.

Binged this. Made me reevaluate my relationship with my phone. We all can relate with the struggle between spending time in the digital v. real world. Never knew about arbitrage in sports betting. Absolutely crazy that people around the country are making this kind of cash because of a money glitch in a multibillion dollar industry. How is this not a movie?!

Whoa! Blends domestic drama with box office explosiveness. Hope this gets adapted to the screen. Ending will leave you uncomfortable in the best of ways as a reader. Thought it might be a sports betting book when it was first recommended to me but this is far broader and more thought-provoking.

Fascinating story. Powerfully illustrates what all this sports betting can do to individuals and families. A book written for the moment we live in, and written very well! Taking this one to my book club. Endless discussion questions.

Beating the Books is a compelling and eye-opening novel that blends real-world insight with emotional depth. Inspired by true events, the story pulls back the curtain on a little-known corner of the sports-betting world where everyday people uncover a market inefficiency and generate six-figure, nearly risk-free profits. What could have been a dry economic exposé instead becomes a vivid narrative filled with tension, ambition, and the very human consequences of high-stakes opportunity.

This book doesn’t just explore the mechanics of betting, but gets to the heart of what happens when ordinary lives collide with extraordinary circumstances. Through its honest, unflinching portrayal of those who take part and the loved ones who watch them, the story captures the profound impact of sports betting in America today. It’s both an intriguing financial mystery and a deeply human story that will stay with readers long after the last page.
