This book will empower its readers. Unapologetic and honest, the author speaks out loud about what it is truly, to be a woman nowadays. Highly recommend to read and share!

If you’ve ever felt like your womanhood was incompatible with the world around you, this book is for you. Prepare to feel SEEN on every page… Sophie holds no punches but with humour and vulnerability unpicks why as woman we contort ourselves for others and how we can move towards being our full unapologetic selves. You can feel the absolute heart that has gone into this book, and I don’t just say this as someone who has been privy to the making of it!

I have to admit that I don't often reads books in this genre, but there was something about this one that really called to me and, of course, I was particularly drawn to the bright front cover and title.

As someone who has always thought I'm not worthy (sadly, of most things in life) and a serial sayer of "sorry", I really thought that this book would offer some help and advise - maybe not to be brave enough to follow my dreams - especially not at my age - but certainly to feel a little more validated and comfortable in my own self.

I really liked the way this was broken down into small chunks, so it was really easy to read this over a longer period and pick up and put down without really losing motivation.

It was great to have this personal vibe throughout as we hear stories from both the author and others who have felt in some way diminished in their lives.

Obviously, not all the stories were ones that I connected with, but there were so many relatable aspects and I'm sure that most people could take something from these and this made me realise that it's not just me.

At the end of each chapter and section, there were exercises to try and practise to help improve your understanding of what you've just read - and again, not all of them will be relevant at all times, but I love the ease of being able to come back to this at a later date or whenever you need a boost and just dip back in to the pages that you need at the time.

I've always been a people pleaser (outwardly) and I think it's great that this helps us to become more authentic and not to keep worrying about how we're perceived in society.

An uplifting read that I know I'll keep around and keep dipping into.

I enjoyed this.

Very often a books like this emplore you to change your life and everything else BUT this one did not. It encourages you as a woman to take stock of and re-evaluate your life.

I am very guilty of a lot of the things @electricpeachstudios mentions in this book, mainly because I choose the path of least resistance but then more times than not I don't do what I want to do. So what do I think this will be able to do .... she guides you in little chunk size bits to assess and really look at a situation and break it down ultimately into a more palatable size.

I feel I need to take time with this and step by step follow the prompts layer out for me here. I found a lot of what she was saying to be true.

I loved this and would love for other women to discover this as well.

There are tasks at the end of each chapter to guide you and I loved the poems and extracts in between as well

At 71 I didn't think this book would be relevant to me but how wrong I was.
All women, and men who have women in their lives, should read this book. It's a very readable and makes you really think about your past life, and your future life, and the changes you can make to be really true to yourself.
Thank you Sophie

This book is inspirational while staying practical, no easy feat. In addition to the well-researched statistics and facts presented by the author, she gives frameworks that are easy to implement in order to start living an authentic life and showing up fully as yourself. The book is well-written, humorous at times and heartbreaking at others.

All in all, highly recommended.

A dazzling debut and an accessible read. Underpinned by feminist scholarship familiar to those working in this area, Sophie’s is a fresh and appealing voice with significant reach.

Uncovering the ways in which gender identity has been, and continues to be, constructed, Sophie uses a myriad routes to explore what it means to be a woman today and, crucially, how to break free of the assumptions, self- attenuation & wider censorship that holds women back (if allowed to do so). At times unflinchingly personal, this confessional technique is finely balanced with clear-sighted analysis, research, case studies, poetry & questions for the reader to consider, creating a genre-defying book.

A recommended read for women in business, gender studies more widely, & purely for interest. A fresh voice and one certainly worth listening to.

“CANNOT PUT IT DOWN!”

I'm not religious but this is like my bible now!
Hard relate to so much of what Sophie says, and I love
how she has interspersed personal stories in with exercises
to help move you through stuff, and poems she has written
so beautifully from the heart.

Her chapter on boundaries has been particularly helpful for me,
and I find myself transported to her world, with her on the journey,
ready to not be so palatable any longer....

It's kind of a re-affirmation on life, and one very needed in these times....
Thank you, Sophie, for being the voice we all need right now..

I adored this book.

I've absolutely ruined it with dog-eared corners, underlining and post-its wedged into pages - basically all of them - because so many lines in this book made me sit up straighter, and breathe a little free-er.

I love how the author weaves her own poems, anecdotes and reflections throughout, so it's somehow simultaneously a non-fiction book about the power of women's voices, a self-help guide, and a memoir or confessional poetry collection, all at the same time!

If you've felt let down by vague, weakly inspirational "believe in yourself, girl" books, you'll find this refreshingly robust.

If you've found psychology and popular science books about confidence, taking up space and claiming your power to be overly technical, I think you'll find this reassuringly human.

And if the "manifest your dream life, no I don't have data to support that" approach is alarmingly woo-woo and un-evidence-based for you, there's so much to get your teeth into here.

I love how broad-ranging the perspectives are that the author calls on. A really varied kaleidoscope of views and voices. It makes this book a very rich tapestry of perspectives. And it made me feel like I was sat around a table of friends, all chiming in, sharing their frustrations but also their rousing inspiration and wisdom. ❤️

I was fortunate enough to be a first reader of Beyond Palatable and can I just say WOW. Sophie has done an immense job of chewing up and spitting out what it means to be a woman in society today. Part memoir, part social psychology study, part manifesto for rebellion, Sophie has successfully analyzed the feminine experience with a considered lens, offering readers a safe space to digest their own experiences and to cleverly build a framework for embodying the futures they want to attain.

This book is different. In a world where self-help books are everywhere, this one is grounded in psychology, practicality, story and reality.

It goes far beyond a useful book or guide. It's a powerful demonstration of what's needed by everyone to stop fitting in with rules we've inherited - and become the limitless version of ourselves that the world really needs.

Sophie's own stories make it real. They give heart to a tale that could be otherwise clinical and abstract. This is far from abstract.

As someone who is trained in most of the psychological theory Sophie references in the book, I could easily have found myself nodding along with a self-serving air of 'I already know this'. I didn't. Quite the opposite in fact. I read it and learned more about myself than I realised I needed.

This book is easy to read, sensible, practical and brilliant. It's the epitome of 'unputdownable'. Everyone should read this.

This is the exact book that I need right now.

Throughout Beyond Palatable, Sophie is raw and honest - she’s not afraid to lay her life bare. This makes for a powerful connection. It also means that we know her advice comes from lived experience. These things, and the wide range of knowledge it imparts, mean the book is a crucial one to have on your shelf.

As someone who’s been feeling very stuck over the last few months but not knowing how to proceed, this book’s been a joy & it gives me hope for the future. It’s one I’ll keep coming back to.

As an avid book worm there are so many books that I can’t put down and so many books that I recommend that people HAVE to read. And this is part of the bookworm joy – being able to spread that word based joy to others.

But this is the first time that I started recommending a book – even before I’d got past chapter 1 (actually it was more like the blurb on the back tbh).

This book is just… fantastic. It’s written so well and Sophie has such a great tone for a book that works on some really meaty topics. It has a wonderful balance throughout and at no point did it seem ranty or just anti any person.

It’s practical and open and really does get you thinking about social normalities and why they are socially acceptable.

It’s also one of the tiny few books (and I mean less than 10) that in my life I’ve gone – you know what I need to highlight this book. For something relatively short and compact it has taken me such a long time to read it. Because I found I needed to stop. To think. To allow myself to feel.

There are some really interesting trains of thought and I think when I read it again I’ll probably to a deep dive into the topics brought up. And for someone who is starting on their Gabor Mate journey as well – it really ties in beautifully with somatic tracking and working through unhelpful scripts.

I really enjoyed the poetry that broke the chapters up, the clear diagrams and the tasks are clear and concise. I’m looking forward to creating my alter ego – probably will involve some art and craft somewhere…

This book not only is a keeper and a re-reader, but I think it should be a good to reminder for all genders about how women can often lose their truth just by our social commentary. So one for the nightstand to come back to again and again.

It truly is a manifesto. A call to find yourself again. To become who you are truly meant to be.

I requested Beyond Palatable while on my own journey of reclaiming my identity, and I’m so glad I did. This is a book with so much to unpack, but what I really appreciated is how flexible it is. You can read it cover to cover (like I did), or dip into the sections that resonate most with you at the time.

As the author makes clear, this isn’t your typical self-help book and I completely agree. The tone feels more like sitting down with a trusted friend for a deep, honest conversation. It’s supportive, empowering, and never once feels preachy or prescriptive. There’s no sense of being told what to do, just space to reflect, question, and reconnect with yourself.

One of the standout elements for me was the variety in how the content is delivered. Alongside Sophie’s own lived experiences, there are stories from women across different races, cultures, and backgrounds, which adds so much depth. The mix of storytelling, verse, transcripts, and research keeps it engaging while also reinforcing the message in different, impactful ways.

Although the book centres on women and societal conditioning, I genuinely think anyone who has ever felt marginalised or made to shrink themselves will find something meaningful here. As a parent to a neurodiverse child, I also recognised parallels in some of the struggles discussed, which made parts of this feel even more personal.

I especially loved the exercises and journal prompts at the end of each chapter. They don’t feel like tasks or “fix-it” work. Instead, they’re gentle invitations to reflect, notice patterns, and grow from a place of understanding rather than criticism.

Overall, this is a powerful, thought-provoking read that I know I’ll return to again and again.

I can't describe how much I loved this book! I have read a lot of self development books, this book felt different, so fresh and groundbreaking - not someone telling you what to do, but like a best friend guiding you with truth, compassion and a commitment to helping you see your own worth.

Sophie's honestly and raw realness, made me feel so seen and safe as I worked through each section.
Her knowledgeable and powerful, multifaceted approach to uncovering, remembering and celebrating ourselves made this feel like a life changing read.

Beyond Palatable is packed with insights, inspiration and hard hitting truths about the society we live in. It will probably make you feel angry, sad, moved, and blow you away with personal breakthroughs and insights. It left me feeling determined, hopeful and empowered.
A much needed, rally cry for women to bravely step into their power, tune into their inner wisdom, and give ridiculous, unachievable, small-making, societal expectations the middle finger.

I am going to buy it for every woman I know, and am excited for the day I can also share it with my young nieces!

It is difficult to categorise this book. It is a transformative kaleidoscope of beautifully written prose and some poetry that is simultaneously intensely personal and universally relevant for all women. Lee's early life experiences provide context and credibility. Her impeccable research (spanning women's history to mythology to neuroscience) is expressed with such verve and contemporary sassiness, that I've actually laughed out loud with joy of it. I have also cried. The book includes personal accounts and interviews with a wide range of women, embodying the diverse relevance of her thesis that we women are more powerful than we've been led to believe. Lee calls out 'The Triad of Oppression' (capitalism, patriarchy and white supremacy) that works tirelessly to keep us down. And, as the forces against women gather strength, she invites us to explore how we have allowed the unholy trinity of fuckery to live rent-free in our heads, and collectively show it the door! Beyond Palatable is an invitation for women to reclaim our birthright. It us much more than a book, it is a clarion call

Beyond Palatable is not a passive read. It's a manifesto. A call to action. A journey to reclamation – of your voice, your identity, your ambition, your worth. Sophie weaves together memoir, other women's stories, research, mythology, exercises, prompts, and poetry (which is absolutely beautiful).

This isn't a 'self-help' book either. Sophie isn't telling you who to become. She's reminding you who you always were. Sophie's signature 'pazzazal' style (if you follow her on LinkedIn, you get it) makes for a punchy, powerful read – AND she knows how to write with real depth, insight and emotion.

This is a book for the chronic people-pleasers. Those of us who've felt trapped by "good girl" conditioning. Any of us who have dulled our brilliance to make others feel more comfortable, or self-sabotaged because we didn't feel worthy, or talked ourselves out of taking up the space we deserve. Which, let's be honest, is most of us, right?

Buy this book. Read it. Absorb it. Buy another copy and give it to someone who needs to hear its message. Beyond Palatable torch to be passed along, igniting the brilliance in each other.

I wasn’t too sure what to expect from this one, but the cover and title grabbed my attention and I wanted to know what it was about.

From the start I could tell this was a very open and honest book, both from the author and then other accounts later in the book.

It really does give you a lot to think about. Some things may be relevant to you now or you may have experienced these things before . There are questions and exercises throughout which help you consider your thought and feelings. They can help you change your viewpoint, see things more clearly or differently.

I like the added touch of poems at the end of the chapters.

This isn’t the sort of book you sit and read start to finish. It’s one to read a little, take in what it says, sit with it for a while, then move on. It’s one where one section may not feel all that relevant right now, so you move forward to one that really resonates with you. You can move back and forth as you wish, rereading sections which may be of more help right now.

So it certainly gives you a lot to think about and creative, usable ways to make a change.

This book is an absolute powerhouse. The opening chapter where the author describes how the book came to be is so relatable that I could have written it myself. (Obviously it would have been a lot less eloquent and a lot more sweary but the sentiment holds@true).

Beyond Palatable is so impactful, I want to buy a copy for every woman I know, particularly younger women like my daughter. This is the book I wish I’d had when I was 14 or 15 and already felt like I was a king sized duvet stuffed into a small pillowcase. I’m 60 now and it took a lot of years and a lot of tears for me to realise I didn’t have to fit. I didn’t have to be liked. And I certainly didn’t have to be silenced. This wonderful book encapsulates all of that. It’s a glorious mix of memoir, exercises (mental, not physical - don’t worry, it won’t have you jogging round the block), explanations interspersed with some poetry and other peoples’ stories.

I devoured it and can’t recommend it enough. It’s time. You need this book and you need it now. I urge you to get yourself a copy. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.

Every now and then you read a book that profoundly shifts the way you see yourself and the world you live in. Beyond Palatable is one of those books. Sophie Lee paints a picture of how women have shrunk themselves and been silenced throughout history, and the impact it has had and continues to have on all of us. She shows us the systems and structures that have sought to keep women “in their place” — and then she shows us how to start doing the work to dismantle it all.

It starts with each of us. How we see ourselves, how we speak to ourselves, how we move through the world, and how we respond to what happens to us.

Sophie writes honestly and engagingly about her own story and struggles with challenges, unhelpful behaviours, and relationships with herself and others, and uses that experience to show us there is another way to be and live and do the work we want to do.

She’s knowledgeable, extremely thorough, and very funny. Highly recommended, especially right now when it feels like everything we and our ancestors have fought for is so fragile.

Beyond Palatable: A Manifesto for Unapologetic Women is a guide to reclaiming voice, visibility, and vitality in a world that pressures women to be 'palatable.'

Sophie Lee argues that centuries of conditioning push women toward self-abandonment... dimming their voices, shrinking their bodies, and over-resourcing others at their own expense. The book blends personal narrative, interviews with a range of other women, social and political analysis, and practical exercises.

In terms of the structure of the book, there are three main parts: Unravelling - maps how conditioning erodes a woman’s sense of worth and voice; Remembering looks at self-knowledge and self-regulation as foundations for empowered living; and Reclamation offers concrete frameworks for living unapologetically.

The book culminates in the reader creating their own personal manifesto for change.

Across all three parts, the book embeds practical exercises and journalling prompts, so readers can apply the theory to daily life. The overarching messaging is that self-expression is not selfish but foundational to justice, community, and systemic change. Rest, joy, and finding our authentic voice are essential resources for living fully.

I recently interviewed Sophie, and she’s exactly how she comes across in her work, down to earth, real and very easy to talk to. I can hear her voice coming out in her book, which brings her work to life.

What I took from the book is how much awareness it brings to the way we think and behave, especially when we can’t stop thoughts coming in, but what we can do is choose how we react.

She also explores the conditioning we’ve all been shaped by through systems, history and culture, and how that still influences how we respond today, particularly in how women relate to each other. It’s not about blame, it’s about recognising it and doing something different.

Sophie offers tools throughout the book and ways to actually work through these thoughts, so it’s not just insight, it’s something you can apply.

If you’ve ever questioned why you react the way you do, especially with other women, read this book.

Sophie’s Beyond Palatable is a rare book that feels both personal and universally relevant. Raw, honest, and unapologetically bold, it explores the pressure women face to stay “acceptable” and challenges readers to reclaim the parts of themselves they’ve been conditioned to hide. It’s a wonderful balance between vulnerability and empowerment. Sophie combines personal storytelling with cultural critique, practical reflection tasks, and insights in a way that never feels overwhelming. Instead, it feels like having a chat over a coffee with the author who truly understands the exhaustion of constantly shrinking yourself to fit into other people’s expectations. Her writing is engaging, emotional, and highly relatable. It’s not so much a self-help book but a powerful call to authenticity and to shine! Thank you

It took me longer than I thought it would to read this book. When I first got my hands on it, I wanted to devour the pages, but it’s one of those books that truly is worth taking your time, with because the themes, exercises and stories will make you think, challenge your view of yourself, and the social constructs in which you live. You’re not a passive reader, you’re invited to do the work. Sophie is an amazing storyteller, and she excellently weaves stories with poetry with research to create something that’s profound and beautiful and uplifting. I also appreciated how she brought in other voices and it was clear she’d really taken care that this book be intersectional and support a wide-range of people.

I love the way Sophie writes, how she weaves in stories, facts and poems. I’ve also been working through the prompts at the end of the chapters, which brings the information to life.

Kemi (spoken word artist) was so right - Sophie holds a mirror up to you in this book. I see myself in some of the stories, I’ve heard other women who have read the book share their stories too. And it’s incredibly sad that many of us have the similar experiences.

It also makes you question your own thoughts, your own beliefs and shows you, that maybe, sometimes you have let other influence you, in a way that doesn’t align with your values.

Thanks Sophie for pouring your heart and soul into the book

Sophie voice is warm and open in sharing her learnings, her experience and thoughts. Whilst I didn't leave with anything that was a totally new insight (I am a woman about the same age and have lived through a lot of similar situations) I did finish it with the sense of having an excellent chat with someone who cared about the same things as me. It's a well collated book, the insights from people with different life experience from hers and the intersectional responses to "palatability" felt timely, organic and intentional and I hope she is proud of having opened up pathway of thought for a lot of her readers.

Beyond Palatable by Sophie Jane Lee challenges the pressure on women to make themselves “acceptable” at the cost of their authenticity. Lee explores how societal expectations encourage women to shrink, soften, and self-censor—and why rejecting those norms is both radical and necessary.

The books deep dive into the psychological and social conditioning that has shaped female behaviour, using tools like somatic awareness and reflective exercises, will help guide readers toward reclaiming their voice.

It is a thought-provoking read that I wish I had read years ago!

Not my usual kind of read, but Beyond Palatable pulled me in from the blurb-and I'm so glad it dia.
Reading it felt like sitting down for a coffee and a gentle, honest chat with a good friend. It really spoke to the experience of being a woman and the pressures that come with that, in a way that felt personal and relatable.
Written using some of the author's own lived experience, it's filled with thoughtful questions and exercises that encourage you to pause and retlect. Detinitely one l'Il come back to and dip in and out of again.

If you identify as a woman or femme and you are tired of shrinking and silencing yourself to please others (people pleasers take notes) this is required reading.

Beyond Palatable is a beautiful testimony to the power of choosing YOU.

Sophie's story is inspiring, illuminating, and insightful. Being your most authentic self is a radical act of rebellion and self love. I will be reading this book more than once.
