Three years ago, on St. Patrick’s Day, Allie’s boyfriend vanished without a trace. The night was full of laughter and green confetti. Then, there's a blank space in her memory she's never been able to fill. No charges were filed. Allie was left with only fragments, clues that indicate she was the last person to see him alive.
Each year since, while everyone else celebrates, Allie stays isolated, cut off from the world. She refuses invitations, and lives inside the unanswered question that has defined What did I do that night?
When the third anniversary arrives, memories begin to surface uninvited, sensory flashes of music, laughter, and fear that do not align with the version of events she has clung to.
By the end of the night, Allie must confront the truth she's tried to recover for the past three years.
This is an excellent short story!! Short stories usually leave me wanting more but this one wrapped up nicely. I’ve never read a Saint Patrick’s day thriller before so this is perfect for a March read!!
I just flew through this St. Patrick’s Day novella and it was exactly what I needed. For such a quick read, it was just the right amount of mystery and suspense.
I’m always impressed when an author can build this much atmosphere and mystery in a shorter format. If you’re looking for a dark, twisty thriller you can finish in one sitting, this is it!
I was completely hooked on this gripping thriller, an incredibly tense short story by JC Ward, with a surprising and unexpected twist at the end.
At her best friend Mia's, St Patrick's day party three years ago, Allie's boyfriend Cade disappears. The following morning Allie mysteriously wakes up at home with no memories of how she got there, and a blank space where nights events were missing, leaving her questioning "what did I do on that night"?
For three years she has kept herself isolated from the world unknowing and a feeling of guilt of having something to do with Cade's disappearance with only her best friend to console her.
On the third anniversary of that night Allie starts having flashbacks and the memories begin to flood her mind, and she finds herself being confronted with the truth.
I was fully engrossed in this exceptional and tense psychological thriller, amazing narrative from JC Ward, and her wonderful portrayal of characters.
This was such a fun, fast read! Luck Runs Out takes a holiday we don’t usually associate with suspense and turns it into the perfect backdrop for a sharp, twisty thriller.
The writing was strong and engaging from the first page — tight, polished, and easy to fly through in one sitting. For a short story, it packed in tension without ever feeling rushed. I especially loved how original the theme felt. A St. Patrick’s Day thriller isn’t something you see every day, and this one fully commits to the vibe in a way that feels clever rather than gimmicky.
If you’re looking for something quick, atmospheric, and a little dark to match the green beer and shamrocks, this is a great pick.
This quick-read story grabbed me from the very beginning and didn’t let go. Best friends Allie and Mia, headed out for a St. Patrick’s Day green beer pub crawl, are trying to have some fun. But Allie is harboring old guilt, and boisterous Mia encourages her to let loose. Except there are ominous shamrocks in Allie’s path — like little green land mines threatening to destroy her happiness. This story is what every thriller should be — a nail-biter from beginning to end. Luck Runs Out by J.C. Ward has the perfect St. Patrick’s Day murder mystery vibes. A five star, four leaf clover read!!
Luck Runs Out is a short, fast-paced story that quickly grabs the reader’s attention and keeps them curious about what will happen next. The story centers on Mia and Allie, two best friends. Allie has no memory of a mysterious night three years earlier when her boyfriend, Cade, disappeared. Wanting to help her move forward, Mia encourages Allie to leave the house and spend some time outside. As Allie finally steps out, fragments of that forgotten night begin to resurface, bringing long-buried memories back to light.
This short story delivers an emotional punch as Allie tries to piece together a night she’s terrified to remember. The St. Patrick’s Day backdrop makes her isolation hit even harder, with the world celebrating while she’s stuck in the same unanswered question.
For such a quick read, JC packs in a lot—steady tension, sharp pacing, and a reveal that lands exactly where it needs to. A fast, gripping look at guilt, memory, and finally facing what’s been hiding in the dark.
Luck Runs Out is a great short story. It’s a quick and easy read. It catches your interest from the first page and has some interesting twists that caught me by surprise! I highly recommend this great book.
This was a great short story thriller! Love the St Patty’s Day theme. I love the idea of short stories for holidays! This had me flipping the pages real fast! Suspense and a good reminder that I don’t miss bar hopping or shouldn’t speak to anyone named Mia tomorrow!!!!
A short 38 pages, but the author does an amazing job at packing a lot into this story. I loved the descriptive writing, and for such a quick read it packs a punch!
This was my first short story by an indie author, and it was a good one.
The story was fast-paced and the plot kept my interest throughout. The writing style felt a bit complex for me at times, but it didn’t take away from the experience. I also didn’t see the twist at the end coming, which was a nice surprise.
A good, quick read — perfect to enjoy with your morning coffee.
A quick, gripping read that pulls you in right away. The pacing is fast but works well for a short story, keeping things engaging from start to finish. Loved the St. Patrick’s Day vibe, and that ending caught me off guard! Perfect for a one-sitting thriller.
This short story is fast paced, detailed considering the length and wraps up nicely! It’s the perfect quick thriller centered around St. Patrick’s Day! I enjoyed the writing and definitely makes me want to pick up the authors other work!

A good who-done-it even though it's easy to figure out. It's a fun ride to get to the end. I like the St. Patrick's Day theme. The writing is good. Short, and to the point.
This was such a fun and quick St. Patty's Day read! It was well written, fast paced, and had descriptive scenes that you felt a part of. I really enjoyed the sudden twists and highly recommend it for a spirited mystery on this Irish holiday.
