I am being a bit harsh on this book. It had a lot of elements in it that I didn’t like, and yet I still managed to enjoy the book reasonably well and hope to read the second book.

It had been SO long since I’d read a vampire book so I was looking forward to it. I couldn’t help being a bit disappointed that this book was mostly centered on the vampire hunters and not the vampires themselves. In fact, we even get a bit of werewolf and witch-work in here. But not that much focus on the vampires at all, so this really wasn’t what I was expecting.

The main character (Anara) and I did not get off to a good start. She makes a mistake when she is trying to save a woman from vampires and then goes and makes the exact same mistake when she is going to save someone else. I mean, hello, learn from what you did wrong the first time! I will admit that her character started to grow on me, but at the beginning she made some dumb decisions and seemed to over-play her mysterious element somewhat.

I also felt like this had a lot of movie-like moments in them. Not where it seemed the author had been writing the words with a story in mind, but more so like she had been writing it as a scene for a movie. That gave it a strangely cliché and cheesy feeling to it? I wanted to read a book and not a movie.

At the beginning we are straight away thrown into a hunting of vampires. I felt like that was fine – but then we never get the backstory at all! In my opinion I don’t like being thrown right into the story without knowing anything about the past. So it bothered me somewhat, but I moved on from that.

They are also hunting some children in this novel called Sage and Baby. When we find out why they are being hunted, the reason was somewhat disappointing. I wanted it to be because they were special for some reason or so, but it ended up being something a whole lot more generic.

There was insta-love in this book and that is what brought the rating down to two stars for sure where I was previously debating. They knew each other for two days and were together… and then for four days and were popping the words ‘I love you’. It was just too fast and not sincere enough for my liking >.>

I did love the characters of Sage and Baby. They do make some silly decisions as well but that can be excused because they are simply children. Sage is pretty smart for her ages and a very good older sister to have. And then Baby is just too cute and trusting, trying to be the best she can be to make her older sister’s job of looking after her easier. Ryan and Beau were nice characters but nothing special in my opinion. And though Anara and I started on the wrong foot, she grew on me and we became okay.

In summary, this book was pretty cliché, a quick read and typical as well. But at the same time, even with all its flaws it was strangely enjoyable? I know I will be reading the sequel soon!

5 stars!

I absolutely LOVE this series I just completed both books and all I can say is incredible. I have read many paranormal books and this is one of my top favs now! You get to meet some amazing characters in this book, I really love Anara. She has to be one of the coolest paranormal characters I have met. We have young warriors fighting a battle to save the humans from a threat they do not even know exists. You get to meet Ryan and Beau two young men on a journey to help save the world. We also get to meet two awesome little girls who are adorable yet strong. Then we have Anara…..girl crushing here. She is like a viking warrior. The fight between the vamps is on, Ryan and Beau are trying their best. Anara arrives just in time to help. The fight scenes between them are all engrossing keeping your attention the entire time. Sage and Baby have not had it easy and I know it will not get any easier for some time. But I know with Anara and Ryan and Beau they have a better chance of survival.

Totalling loving this series and I am looking forward to much much more. One thing though after reading book two, I want more of Anara please!!!!

Vampires, Gargoyles, strong female characters all wrapped here in this amazing story and it only gets better wait till you read book two!!!!

Wow the writing of the fighting scenes were so realistic. This is about vampires but they are not the main characters. They are the evil beings that are being fought by 2 mortal brothers and an immortal cursed woman who is a bad ass. And if that isn’t strange enough there are two little girls they become guardians of when their mother is killed and the vampire queen wants them for nefarious purposes. I was glad to see this was the start of a new series and the next book comes out in March.

Chapter one, told from Anara's POV, had me hooked. She's a mystery. She's been alive for five hundred years, she's dressed in armor and hunts those who harm innocents. When we meet her she's trying to save a woman from vampires, but she's unsuccessful. Saddened over her inability to save the woman she does something she never would have in the past - she agrees to honor the woman's final wish to protect her two daughters.

From here on out, chapters alternate between the POV of Anara and Ryan. He and his brother, Beau, have been fighting vampires and protecting humans for the past three years following the loss of Beau's fiancée to vampires. Anara has been watching him from the shadows for years. Now, faced with the challenge of keeping these two girls safe, she must rely on Ryan.

I thoroughly enjoyed parts of this story, while others felt choppy. As I said, the mystery of Anara was intriguing (it kept me reading). I loved the addition of two young characters; both are strong and quite adorable despite their loss. Yet, Anara and Ryan's story felt incomplete in the end especially considering the next book shifts focus to two new(ish) characters. Their "romance" is a major case of insta-love and a bit of a letdown. However, it was sweet to see a hardened warrior realize she could have love in her life. This is the start of a series, but instead of first-book-itis (world building overload, complex characters, etc) much was left unanswered. All in all, the author's writing style, which was new to me, made for an quick, enjoyable read. I'm hoping more information about Anara will be revealed in Dark Secrets: Edge of Evil.

I received a free copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for a review. I did not receive any compensation nor did I guarantee a favorable review.

If you are looking for spoilers then stop reading as I never share spoilers.

I thought this book was going to be all about vampires but it's about so much more, as other immortal varieties have been included along with humans of course! This was a fast paced story which I read from beginning to end in one sitting. Well developed characters, some romance and amazing fighting scenes will definetely leave you wanting more. I certainly loved this story and believe that you will too!

*** I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A mysterious winged heroine. A promise made to a dying mother. Two uncanny orphans. And a couple of vampire hunting brothers who are much nicer than their tough-guy exteriors would lead you to believe. All these elements combine in Stone Cold Dead, the first novella in a new paranormal romance series, Dark Secrets.

This was actually my first Shea Berkley book, so I started this with no expectations whatsoever. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the action starts with the very first chapter and pretty much doesn’t let up until the end. The heroine, Anara, is under a curse that turns her to living stone when exposed to sunlight (Berkley doesn’t use the word “gargoyle,” but I definitely thought it! And not just because I recently watched I, Frankenstein, either). By day she has no choice but to watch the world go by around her. By night she is a warrior woman whose sword turns countless vampires to ash.

She confronts a group of vampires preying on a woman, but is unable to save the woman, who makes Anara vow to save her two daughters from the evil that hunts them. But Anara knows she cannot protect the children by day, so she recruits the aid of Ryan, a man she has been secretly watching for some time. Ryan and his brother, Beau, have been hunting vampires ever since the baddies killed Beau’s fiancee, Sophie.

I have to say, I really enjoyed the action and the setup for this story. But one thing I would have liked to see more of is the development of the characters and their relationships with each other. For example, readers do learn about Sophie, but we don’t really get to know what exactly happened to her apart from she was killed saving Ryan and Beau. We also learn that Ryan reminds Anara of someone from her past, but we never really get a good idea of what that man meant to her and what their relationship is like, so it doesn’t have a chance to color the relationship between Ryan and Anara.

When it comes to romances, I’ve always been a believer in the journey being more important than the destination, so I was a bit disappointed that Ryan and Anara hurtle headlong into love with a speed that makes it difficult to admire the trip. So if you like slow-burn and lots of emotion denial, this probably isn’t the right novel for you. However, if you like love found in the heat of the moment, you just might enjoy this.

The story ended a bit too quickly for me, but I am hoping to learn more later in the series about what makes the two sisters so special, what exactly the nature of Anara’s curse is, and what happened with Sophie. I’m looking forward to starting Book 2, Dark Secrets: Edge of Evil, which was released last month and features one of the characters we meet briefly in this one, Alden Caldwell. I’m keeping my fingers crossed in the hope I’ll see more of Anara and the brothers in it, and I’m also hoping one of the next books in the series will feature Beau’s story.

I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

“Stone Cold Dead” is the first novella in the Dark Secrets series by Shea Berkley. It is told in first person from more than one point of view.

The story starts with lots of action. It has a clear goal. The writing style is simple and well-suited for this type of book, because there is a lot of fighting and it keeps that fast pace going. I really enjoyed the characters, the excitement of the story, and the mystery surrounding Anara’s curse. Unfortunately, I was disappointed because Anara’s curse is never fully explained.

The biggest problem “Stone Cold Dead” has is that it suffers from being rushed on too many levels, especially in terms of the romance. This story definitely needed to be expanded into a full length novel. There were too many unanswered questions. Also, I hated that Anara and Ryan didn’t get to know one another at all before proclaiming their love for one another. I could kind of understand it on Anara’s part because she had been watching Ryan for a long time. She at least knew a little about him. But, Ryan had never met her before the start of the story. He just accepts everything too easily and falls in love instantly.

I have started reading the next story in this series. I was disappointed that it skips over what happens with Anara and Ryan’s relationship. I mention this here because I want readers to know that it isn’t a matter of being able to get more of their story in the next book. The next story is about different characters. Anara and Ryan are away during the next book, but it is said that they are married, which was totally unsatisfying to me because I never got to see them get to that point.

For the action alone, I would recommend reading “Stone Cold Dead.” Just don’t expect a lot of resolution at the end of the novella.

Brothers, Ryan and Beau have made it their mission to hunt down and kill vampires ever since Beau's girlfriend was murdered. Ryan and Beau find out that they are not the only ones hunting these creatures of the night. They have been getting help from Anara, another type of creature of the night, one that is cursed. Anara is a fierce, female warrior. Anara defeated a few vampires intent on killing two young girls, she promises the girls that she will help take care of them, but her curse makes this impossible. Determined to help the girls, Anara reveals herself to Ryan. Ryan and his brother don't quite know if Anara is on the side of good or evil and Anara doesn't quite know if she can trust the brothers with her secrets, but Ryan sure knows that he is quite madly, deeply enamored with Anara, curse or not.

This was a fun, quick, read reminiscent of Supernatural. Anara is a strong, kick-ass female character and I would love to know more about her curse and her history. The brothers compliment one another, Beau serious and thoughtful, Ryan more emotional and laid-back. Ryan and Anara had a very insta-love connection that got very serious very fast and I didn't know how this developed so quickly with Anara being in her cursed state half the time. Anyhow, the vampire fighting is full force and done well. There is still a lot to be explained with the vampires, their pet werewolves and the mystery of why exactly the vampires want with the two young girls. Hopefully, this will all be part of the next book.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

This story was basically laying some groundwork and introducing a few key characters and creatures of The Dark Secrets world.

ARC received through Xpresso Book Tours for the purposes of an honest review.

Enara is a warrior under a curse. By day she is forced only to observe the world without being able to interact with it. At night, she comes alive and is one of the most fierce defenders in a world which is taunted by supernatural creatures. In her desperation to look after some young innocents, she meets Ryan, one of two brothers who are also fierce fighters.
"Alone, we're lethal. Together, we're unstoppable.” - such is true about these boys. We see the beginning of their little ‘band’ of defenders. Although the brothers are different, I liked how they had each other’s back, and how despite the rough nature of their purpose, they are still quite relatable.
The story is interesting and cleverly does not bombard us straight into the middle of a supernatural world. We don't learn everything about their reality from the start, but this only whet my appetite to know more. I looked forward to knowing more about the supernatural rules, and in particular the characters who although would all have their interesting back stories, we don’t really see them developed too much here.
The ending of this story did seem a little hurried and a little ‘clean-cut’, but if you consider that it isn’t an ending but more of a chapter in the story, that helps to put it in perspective. Nicely written, easy to read and I went straight on to Dark Secrets: Edge of Evil!

This novella was okay, but it really needed to be longer and more detailed so the reader could connect with the story and characters.

Anara, our main character, is a gargoyle (or something similar). So by day, Anara is perched on the top of a church watching the world go by. And by night, she hunts vampires. I like Anara, but I want to know more about her. She has lived for centuries - but we don't know anything other than she was cursed to turn to stone in the sun, she is lonely, and she fights vampires like a viking warrior princess. When two young girls are orphaned after a vampire attack, Anara approaches Ryan, a human vampire hunter. Anara and Ryan fall in major insta-love. Seriously, the L-word is being whipped out within a day or two. I liked Ryan - but I want to know more about him. We know more about his brother (Beau) than we do about Ryan, and Beau is only a small secondary character. I would have liked to learn more of the back story as to why Ryan and Beau are hunting vampires. The other two secondary characters, Sage and Baby, are very cute and angelic children characters. They were sweet enough - but I want to know why the vampires are hunting them. So they are innocent? How does that help the vampers? I got a little aggravated because I was only getting the surface of the story when I really wanted those deep waters.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It was an okay start, but I am hoping for more out of the rest of the series.

This review is from: Dark Secrets: Stone Cold Dead (Kindle Edition)
This book was fun and enjoyable to read. Dark Secrets has more than one supernatural creatures than just one. Which I enjoy reading about and how the humans are also mentioned. The characters were well written and the writing was fantastic as well. This is one author to look out for in the future. Dark Secrets was a fast paced read that I read in one setting I couldn't put it down once I started reading. The fighting scenes were also great.

I was intrigued by the cover, and then as I am a fan of vampire- underworld books, I really wanted it to be special. But I was disappointed. It has one element that was intriguing, Anara. Her way of living as a stone statue by day and as a fighter by night was something I've never thought of. But the rest... Brothers with alfa issues, two orphan sisters hunted by vampires and a little of love (which was one of the most poorly written stories of all times). To be continued.
