February 9, 2026If you like historical thrillers with puzzles and momentum, this one delivers. The story moves fast, the mystery stays clear, and the tension keeps building. Read it as part of the Seasonal Reading Challenge and enjoyed the ride.

A really enjoyable mix of ancient mystery and modern danger. The pacing is quick, the clues are fun to follow, and the European settings add a lot to the atmosphere. Read it for the Seasonal Reading Challenge and I’m glad I did.

Pretelli’s novel spreads like a virus across the pages. It begins small, with the main characters being watched, chased, and attacked over the possession of fragments of a Templar manuscript that, if held by the wrong hands, could release nine plagues that would cause worldwide genocide. As the plot expands, Dr Elena Voss, her team, and the WHO find themselves protecting the world against bio-warfare.
Petrelli’s take on the Knights Templar and research into synthetic biology and genetic engineering give the plot an interesting apocalyptic spin. Through Dr Voss’s obsession with decoding the nine fragments of a Templar manuscript, the author explores humanity’s struggle for power and the decisions people make when situations test their resilience, moral compass, and love for humankind.
I found this novel to be a solid read, with great cinematic scenes and well-placed beats. I cannot wait to read part two of The Templars Legacy trilogy.

This story is so real!
Fast paste, well researched and excellent character development.
The plagues mirrored the Biblical plagues and this book brings the reality so close to home that it is scary!

Wonderful suspenseful story
Enjoyed reading this story about the Knights Templars and the hidden messages that they were famous for. The biohazard angle and building complex plagues that were beyond understanding at the time did make it less authentic but it was woven believable throughout. Can't wait for the next story.

I got completely drawn into the chase across Europe in this book. The combination of ancient Templar secrets and modern-day danger felt so exciting that I was constantly turning pages to see what would happen next. Elena’s discoveries about the manuscript and the codes she uncovers kept me guessing, and every revelation added another layer to the mystery. I loved how the story moves through real historical sites, making it feel like you are right there with the characters, facing the dangers and unraveling centuries-old secrets. The tension never eases, and the puzzle at the center is genuinely intriguing, making it a thrilling adventure from start to finish.

I got pulled into The Hidden Cipher much faster than I expected. The mix of ancient Templar secrets, modern science, and a very real global threat makes the story feel both adventurous and tense. Elena Voss is a strong, believable lead, and I liked how the code-breaking and history actually drive the plot instead of just decorating it.
The chase across Europe, the hidden symbols, and the growing sense of danger kept the pages turning. It’s the kind of book where each chapter feels like it’s pushing you closer to something big and dangerous. good & odd in equal measure
An enjoyable romp although the epithet “Templar” may be a tad disingenuous since little of the story is actually connected to the Templar history, myth or story. However, the narrative moves at a pace with some nice ‘chase scenes’. What I failed to understand, even on a 2nd reading, (no spoilers coming) was the anachronisms. A mention of Oxygen when it wasn’t discovered until 1774. Mention of molecular structure etc from centuries before they were understood, even from ancient Arabic writings. Odd to get through proof reading. But did not overly detract from the overall enjoyment.

if you’re into that Dan Brown / The Da Vinci Code kind of energy, this totally hits that same spot but still feels fresh. I got hooked pretty much right away and kept saying “just one more chapter” and then suddenly it’s 2am. the whole Templar mystery + codes + running around Europe thing was super entertaining, and Elena was actually a main character I cared about which doesn’t always happen in thrillers. one small thing is sometimes the pacing felt almost too fast, like I wanted a second to breathe before the next twist hit. I legit didnt expect to get this invested but here we are, it’s just one of those books you fly through and then wish there was more.

Dr. Elena Voss discovers an ancient manuscript that contains clues to a powerful secret that she later learns is very dangerous. She travels across Europe with her team to decode symbols hidden in monasteries, fortresses, and crypts. But—her team is being hunted down. This novel is full of mystery and intrigue. A very good read! Looking forward to Book 2!

I am enticed with signs and symbols and anything like this book that pivots around it. Elena is my hero and her skills in decoding and interpreting what all eyes take for granted is spellbinding in this captivating thriller. Legacy transfers and preservations is never easy when warring is inevitable.

It was bad
The concepts of these plagues was I'll conceieved. It like there was this story written about these plagues and it wasn't necessarily all that good of a story. Then the editors asked, can you do a re write and somehow get the Templars into the story... it will sell better. And this is that result. It's just a bad book

elena voss is smart and real, the codes actually make sense, and the chase scenes kept me up late. history parts felt solid without slowing things down. only gripe is it ends too quick, want the next one already. good thriller if you like smart action.

We discussed this book in our YA Book Club challenge, and what stood out most was how imaginative the central idea is. The diamond as a power amplifier creates constant tension in the story. Some members felt the emotional reactions were exaggerated, but the plot itself kept things moving.
