I was absolutely feral for the first half of this book and then it lost some steam and then I had an existential crisis about dark romance books 😂 so bear with me.

You will probably like this book if you like:
🤠 Dark romance set in 1890s Western
🤠 He’s an outlaw and she’s a pious woman
🤠 Hurt x comfort
🤠 Possessive FMC
🤠 Touch her and die
🤠 Fast burn
🤠 Their fate is written in the stars

I really enjoyed the first half of the book. I loved the spin of a Western outlaw as our morally gray MMC. I loved them being on the run which was giving me Bonnie and Clyde vibes. “Hurt/comfort” and “touch her and die” are two of my favorite tropes so I really enjoyed that. I also was super impressed with the writing because the way that people spoke in the 1890s has a certain cadence and certain vocabulary and the author was able to capture that perfectly.

The second half of the book started to lose some steam and lose some of its luster for me. When I sat down to think about why, I realized that for me to enjoy a dark romance, I have to believe that it all takes place in a non-real, fantastical world. The set pieces and everything resembles our world but the rules of the dark romance world are not the same as ours. Because if the rules are the same, then all of the dark parts, at best, give me the ick and, at their worst, are traumatizing. For dark romance to work for me, I have to imagine it is all taking place in a magical, super heightened world. The magical, fantastical world creates a space place to help explore and process. Does that make sense? I am not sure how others read dark romances and what they enjoy from them, but that is the lens that I use when I read them.

Where this book broke that fantasy for me was when we started to bump up against the real world. I can read a mafia book where there are rival mafias, but I don’t want to read about the FBI raiding them and taking the don to court. I can read a book where a serial killer has a conflict with another serial killer, but if they are caught by law enforcement, the illusion is broken. And here the outlaw came in contact with the law and I was very much reminded of all of the consequences of their actions and it just took me out of it. And that then broke the rest of the imagery world. This is a wild statement but perhaps it wasn’t dark enough for me and I didn’t want there to be realistic consequences for our morally grey characters?

I think if you like your dark romances to be a little bit more grounded in reality, then you will enjoy this. This is also a very solid, competent debut novel and if any of the above appeals to you, then you should definitely check it out. As always with dark romances, check the content warnings.

Thank you Luna Literary and Halle Oak for providing this eARC! All opinions are my own.

Pre-Read Thoughts: I’m so excited to read this that I’ve dropped all my other books (and responsibilities - lol). I haven’t read a dark romance in a while and this is a dark western so I’m very intrigued.

From the very first “goddamn brat” to the absolutely swoon-worthy “my woman, my home”, I was hooked. The historical western romance setting was such an interesting choice and worked beautifully with the love-at-first-sight romance.

I really loved the connection between the MMC and FMC, and especially how much they both grew and changed throughout the story. Their development felt genuine, tender, and really satisfying to read. The romance had me fully invested from start to finish.

Please make sure to check the content warnings before reading.

This was a 4.5⭐️ read for me (rounded up). I felt it lost a little momentum towards the end, but overall it was still such a brilliant, heartfelt story. I genuinely can’t wait to read more from Halle Oak.

Thank you so much for letting me read this as a Kindle ARC copy! I’m so grateful for the opportunity 🤍

What a surprise The Bear and the Lamb turned out to be!

I was immediately drawn to this dark western romance because I was very intrigued by the concept of an outlaw and a pious woman being on the run together. I feel like most western romances I've read are centered around cowboys so this was a nice change of pace while those elements of tending to animals and land are still very present due to the time period and locale. If you are a Red Dead Redemption/RDR2 fan you will absolutely love this book! Something about Kodiak was so Arthur Morgan-coded between the train robberies and super intelligent craftiness, and I really, really enjoyed how consistently "him" he was. While he was a bit of a grouch and earned every bit of the reputation considering the crimes he committed, he was also someone with a deeply soft interior, aching for love and belonging and the ability to slow down and settle.

Alice was the best. She was smart, dreamt big, and even though she was initially limited by her social and religious conditioning, she ended up becoming a really brave character in her own right. With that said, the way this is written is true to the time in that someone like Alice coming into her own and pushing back against her circumstances would've resulted in her getting harmed in many ways by the men who call themselves in charge of her. This was a really strong, interesting, fun, action-packed historical romance filled with longing, imperfect characters, and a balanced, yearn-filled love story that builds slowly and steadily. The pacing was steady, the storyline intriguing, and I never knew what was going to happen next.

There is a domestic discipline subplot here that I honestly didn't care much for—I don't tend to like domestic discipline because it feels like being scolded like a child—BUT the great writing here carried me through those scenes and I overall really enjoyed the spicy moments as well. I also wish that Alice got slapped around less, she kind of really gets bruised and bloodied here. Again, I think this makes sense both historically and in the context of her social standing and obligations—and I was glad that she managed to get retribution—but it was rough to read at times. The ending kind of wrapped up very suddenly and cleanly in terms of the overarching conflict, but part of me feels like that is okay considering everything these two suffered lol.

Thank you to Luna Literary and Halle Oak for the ARC! I very much look forward to continuing this series and reading more from this author.

Not only does The Bear and the Lamb have one of the most gorgeous covers ever, it also has a gorgeous and impactful story within. A story I am so glad I had the pleasure to read.

The beginning was perfection. I was so locked in! The first half is so excellent, my heart was pounding with the abundance of high stakes at hand. Alice dreams of fleeing her abusive marriage and home, but with nowhere to go, all she can do is seek refuge in the stars above. Until Kodiak, who name bears the name of her favorite constellation, is dragged to her husband's inn and shackled. With a choice to make, Alice decides to help free the man, creating a domino effect where she is left with no choice but to flee with the outlaw when the irreversible occurs.

The romantic tension was exquisite! So darn good! Alice's nerves are in total disarray upon enabling the death of her abusive husband. She should hate Kodiak for forcing her into a life on the run. But as time goes by, we see her come to life. We see an Alice become bold, take courage, and take risks in a way she never ever has. Her Bear brings her life, and in turn, she grounds him by creating a home in her heart for him. Kodiak truly is a morally grey man. He has goodness towards Alice, his growing attraction turned love is without question in my mind, but that man is not afraid to take down anyone else in his way. Especially anyone threatening his Alice. And I loved how fiercely protective he was of her, even if it means having to make certain sacrifices to see her kept safe from all harm. He's a man obsessed in the best way possible.

And confession...I loved it. It does go dark, but I wouldn't say it's an overly dark book. If anything there's so much hope as we see our leads face the seemingly insurmountable, yet still strive to find a way to conquer it all. Alice in particular has the most breathtaking transformation!

Now, I will say, my attention lulled in the middle. I felt the pace slowed down a touch too much, but then the final act began and that exhilaration from first act immediately returned to me! My heart was pounding again, I had to stop myself from biting my nails! I was that invested! That engaged! That locked in with seeing this incredible journey to its end!

And what a glorious end it is!

Thank you to Luna Literary for this complimentary eARC, I leave this honest review voluntarily .

This was such a unique story that I was captivated from the very beginning. The story doesn't start like a normal romance and the characters take a while to reveal themselves but getting to see each layer of the person peeled back to reveal their true selves was where the story really gets interesting!

Bear aka Kodiak is definitely a morally gray Hero. He learned from an early age that he couldn't count on anyone but himself and so he's carved out a way of life by making his own rules and following his own moral compass. That means this man doesn't care about anything or anyone as long as he gets to see another sunrise and his logic is a little unhinged. But that all changes when fate puts an innocent Lamb in his path and nothing is ever the same for him again.

Alice aka Lamb is stuck in a loveless marriage where she's treated more like a convenient servant than a person. She's been biding her time to escape but then she meets the notorious thief, Kodiak and suddenly her chance to escape her misery is tied to him. He's as big as a bear but she see's him as a sign from the stars and throws her luck in with him.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat! The adventure these two go on as they try to avoid the law, Alice's cruel in-laws and their own growing attraction/romance was full of twists, turns and adrenaline jumps that had my heart in my throat more times than I was expecting! Still I really enjoyed this story. If you're looking for something different or if you like old westerns or even star-crossed lovers, this one is definitely worth checking out.

Favorite Bits:
🖤 Alice's love of the stars
🖤 Kodiak - literally a Hero that falls first and falls HARD
🖤 The epilogue was bittersweet but so good!!

Thanks to Happily Booked for providing the eARC. This is my honest opinion.

A Debut That Hooks You from the First Page

'The Bear and the Lamb' is the impressive debut from Hallie Oak, and what a debut it is. Alice is married off to a wealthy but violent man. One day, he brings a fugitive outlaw into their home. When Alice cares for him, an unexpected bond forms between her and Kodiak. Together, they go on the run, but it quickly becomes clear that this dangerous journey cannot last. The constant threat from their surroundings and the difficult choices they face create a strong sense of tension and keep the reader on the edge of their seat.

The story is told from two perspectives: Alice and Kodiak. The chemistry between the characters feels realistic. They are complete opposites, yet they find in each other exactly what they need: he, the grumpy cowboy; she, the sunshine woman slowly opening her heart to an outlaw. Their feelings and moral dilemmas are portrayed convincingly, giving their relationship more depth than a typical romance.

The story includes beloved romance tropes, the grumpy cowboy, the sunshine heroine, forbidden love, but Hallie Oak manages to put a fresh and compelling spin on them. The writing style is very enjoyable, and the world-building is strong. The western setting of the 1890s feels authentic and enhances the emotional impact of their flight and the challenges they encounter. The story is engaging, with gripping plot twists, and the spicy scenes are tastefully written without feeling overdone.

'The Bear and the Lamb' is a debut that makes you eager to read more from Hallie Oak, especially for fans of dark western romance filled with emotion, suspense, and a touch of danger. A captivating, emotional, and thrilling read that shows Oak is a promising talent in the genre.

**Note**
Historical romance isn't my normal go to genre, but throwing in the "dark", well that got me. I truly enjoyed the way this was written. The language and setting were generally true to the 1890s time period. I applaud you for that!

The dynamic between Kodiak and Alice was perfect. The slow-burn and the heated tension between the two kept me turning the pages. It also made me want to jump into the pages and strangle Alice! Like seriously! You know how you feel! They were fated as Alice believes because of her connection to the stars. They faught so hard to their happily ever after, running, hiding, Kodiak being captured. It all lined up to an absolutely perfect and beautiful ending that will have you reaching for the tissues and wondering if the stars will align for you too. It's swoon worthy and heart stopping. A wonderfully written world and story.

I loved this book and I can't wait to see what else Halle Oak has in store for us! I am so glad this was my intro to dark Historical romance!

This western dark romance had me hooked from start to finish. The spice is just right! Heated, intense, but never overpowering the story. What truly stole my heart was Alice’s strength. She’s resilient, sharp, and refuses to be broken by the brutal world around her.

And Kodiak, he's rough, dangerous, and fiercely protective! He’s morally gray in the best way, the kind of man who loves with his whole being and would burn the world down for it. Their dynamic is raw and consuming, built on survival, trust and devotion.

Dusty, dark, emotional, and intense, this book proves that even in the harshest places, love can be wild and unforgettable!

Thank you so much Halle Oak and Love Notes for the ARC!

An exceptionally beautiful story, truly written in the stars. Ms. Halle Oak, congratulations on your stellar debut novel!!!

Going into this book, I was skeptical. While I do love a cowboy romance, many of the books I read are contemporary romance, and very little ever crosses into the realm of historical fiction. However, this book exceeded all my expectations and gave me a new appreciation for authors able to weave both modern and historical concepts of love, sex, and being into a single storyline.

I LOVED the dynamics between Alice and Kodiak - especially their pet names for each other and how everything was so symbolic to their story. Alice begins the story chained to her abusive husband, wishing on stars for a better life. And just like that, the stars answer her in the form of a gruff outlaw, Kodiak, whose name and story bear (get it?) a striking resemblance to Alice’s favorite constellation.

They embark on a high-stakes journey riddled with murder, heists, and a delicious sexual tension. While Alice grapples with her faith for this new life she finds herself in, she transforms into a confident woman unencumbered by the societal expectations of the time. Kodiak, in contrast, can find peace and softness with Alice. Opening his eyes to a life he never thought he could have: one filled with stability, love, and chickens.

For me, the most engaging part of Kodiak and Alice’s dynamic came from how complex the characters they were. Kodiak is truly morally grey - he thieves, he murders, he lies, but his love for Alice always drives his actions (once we have met him). This man would willingly give up his life to ensure her safety *swoon*.

I didn’t feel like the story lulled in the middle. Instead, I think many of the scenes indicated by other reviews attributed to said “lull” were literary devices for us to see the growth in both characters, with how they contrasted from their introductions. I felt everything was well-paced, and may have even shed a couple of tears with the ending (it definitely gave end of Tangled vibes with their storytelling 🥹). I fear I will need a hard copy to add to my collection!

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 (please make sure to read the trigger warnings - this is dark romance based in the Wild West, and themes are consistent with the genre and time period)

A million thank yous to both Love Notes PR and the author, Halle Oak, for allowing me to read an eARC version of this spectacular book and provide my honest thoughts. I’ll be waiting for the next one 😉

What do you get when you mix a cynical, morally gray outlaw with a breeding fetish and a pious, abused innkeeper's wife who likes to stargaze? As it turns out, quite a well done debut!

I was very curious about what constituted a "dark western romance". I suppose it gets that description for the violence, both perpetuated by the MCs and the villains, and for the way that it highlights the grittier sides of life--fighting for survival, domestic violence, assault. It read like your typical angsty, high heat western romance up until about halfway. The pacing is slow in a deliberate way, slice of life moments interspersed with action. You got instant attraction, but a slowish burn until the deal is sealed. The dialogue felt authentic--Kodiak's POV especially gave me the right western vibes, with the cadence and choice of words spot on. The FMC is quite pious, which I wasn't expecting, and as a result there's a lot of talk of God, sinning, right and wrong. It was kind of funny to see her change her tune as time went on; guess it's true what they say about bad influences. :p

About halfway, it abruptly turned into a heist comedy for a few short chapters. There were a couple of plot points that struck me as silly given what we knew about the situations and the characters... but I get it, you've got to move the story along somehow. Still, Plus, there was Alice volunteering for devious plans and then getting her panties in a twist over the violence. That, I couldn't take seriously.

We get back on track with Bonnie and Clyde vibes, and for a little bit there, I honestly wasn't sure if we were supposed to be rooting for the MCs or not. There were a lot of victims all around. It was an interesting predicament to be in, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought it made sense. Dark romance is all about rooting for the morally gray characters, isn't it? The ones who don't give a rat's behind if the world burns around them so long as they're happy. The climax turned out a bit anticlimactic, but I think it ended on the perfect note, and it was highly entertaining throughout. The writing was smooth and error-free. Overall, I think I'd most recommend The Bear and the Lamb to people who are equal fans of old westerns and romance novels. It's got just the right touches of both.

When I tell you I devoured this story….I never wanted it to end. First, the cover art, the aesthetic, the vibes, the blurb like I didn’t stand a chance resisting this book 😂 The Bear and The Lamb has all the best parts of all my favorite tropes and then some. Plus, the authors/characters’ voices are so so strong, they are well thought out with amazing details. I love me a good western/cowboy/criminal setting and characters already, and Kodiak takes that shit to perfection. He’s rough and rowdy, but somehow the perfect match to sweet Alice. And Alice? Oh my god. From the beginning reading her journal entries and love of the stars, I said that’s my bitch right there, real recognize real. No but really, she was truly too sweet for that world, too kind and the wrong people took advantage of that. Her meeting Kodiak was like dynamite going off because it blew her life apart to make way for her true self. I loved that through the story Kodiak and Alice rub off on each other so much, they help each other grow and to me, that’s what love is all about. The western setting and storytelling were absolutely fantastic, the descriptions were everything and painted such beautiful imagery. The characters were so intense and complicated. There was a ton of action and conflict, the happy ending is so hard fought but well deserved. I cried so much at the ending 😂😂😂😂 the ending and wrap up was more than I could have imagined. Paired with all the details and threads of fate, I was legit boohoo crying on that last page. I honestly feel like I could write a thesis on the way I loved this book, sometimes a book just moves you. This book fucking MOVED me. Something about fate and the stars, the contrast between Kodiak and Alice. Like we’re in the first 8 days of 2026 and I already know this is a top read of the year for me lmao!!! If you are a lover of cowboy romance, western romance, organized crime vibes, morally grey romance, this is going to be a must read book for you. A million bajillion thanks to Halle Oak and to Luna Literary Management for the opportunity to read and provide my honest review for this ARC early.

Definitely check the spoilers at the end of the book prior to reading as it for sure touches on darker themes and is set in a past/historical timeline.

4.5 ⭐️

This book was literally what I needed to start off 2026. The characters oh boy these characters.

Alice is someone who represents the unspoken truth of women in history, the truth of loveless marriages that benefited men, businesses, and the economy. She represents the women who didn’t find freedom, courage, or their own Kodiak. She finds her voice and strength not only from the MMC, but through her own convictions which I think is important because while relationships should build us up we should also be building ourselves up through our own personal journeys so I really appreciate that aspect of Alice’s character.

Now my man Kodiak. Ladies, he’s grumpy, he’s raggedly handsome, he’s an outlaw, and did I mention he’s tall? My man’s was down bad for “Miss Alice” from day 1 girls. Now he has flaws as is expected from an outlaw (and just from a man period) BUT he lives and breathes for his girl which is just what the escapism doctor ordered. Also this man also goes on a personal growth journey. Alice makes him a better man, but he also finds himself becoming a better man naturally without her influence throughout the book which is what we like to call character growth.

I’m not gonna spoil but this book is literally so endearing (if you ignore murder, robbery, and spanking) but like also don’t ignore those things and it’s just as good if not even more enjoyable. Now it is SPICYYYY!!! Kodiak has a mouth on him that he uses well and often. I personally loved the spiciness and the kink of the book but that’s exactly what it is KINK so if you are not into KINK then do not go into this book expecting flowers and rainbow love making. Read trigger warnings when they’re provided because this book deserves a fair chance for review, not scrutiny from people who set themselves and their expectations up for failure.

NOW GO ENJOY THESE LOVE BIRDS ON JANUARY 20TH 2026!!!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Honestly you had me at shooting stars.

I use to read historical romance all the time, it’s actually where my love of romances blossomed. However I fell into the more modern genre, and almost forgot about this incredible other world of romance.

I am so glad that the cover pulled me in enough to apply for an arc, because wow it was beautiful and so much fun to read. It’s been a while since I read a book that made me say “just one more chapter” on repeat, and had me up way later than expected.

I adore Alice, she’s rather tough on herself, but she’s fierce and resilient. She really doesn’t fear much, but it takes a minute for her to realise her strength.
Kodiak is everything you want from an outlaw - rough, rugged and dangerous. However he is nothing if not Alice’s protector, he really is her bear that she wished for. Protecting her at all cost, his whole world is her.

While these pair couldn’t be any more different on a surface level, there is a tether of trust between the two. One that was built upon Alice’s kindness and reciprocated with Kodiak’s protection. They balance each other and they are able to provide what the other needs.
There were moments when I was on the edge of my seat anticipating how these two were going to make it, and whether or not they would both pull through. But love is an unyielding force to be reckoned with, and wishes on stars are a powerful thing.

The Bear and the Lamb by Halle Oak
4⭐️ 2🌶

Okay, I loved this! This dark western romance had me hooked from the start! Alice is stuck in a loveless marriage, running an inn, when her husband drags home a wounded outlaw and basically dumps him in her care. Cue instant drama, tension, and all the forbidden vibes you could want. Enter Kodiak, the big, mysterious MMC who’s dangerous and hunted… but he calls her “little lamb” and suddenly fate feels like it could be real.

The old-timey western atmosphere is chef’s kiss, the language, the manners, the dusty charm... it all pulls you right in. It took me a sec to get used to Kodiak’s way of talking, but once I did? I found it so endearing.

There’s plenty of classic western excitement to keep your heart racing (gunfights, chases, you name it), but let’s be real, the slow burn between Kodiak and Alice is what had me hooked. Their chemistry is electric, and that ending? Had me stressing HARD, like, not breathing whilst reading kind of stress.

Such a fun, addictive read. It's dark, romantic, and full of heart. If you love forbidden/outlaw romances with a historical twist, grab this one!

As always, check those trigger warnings first. 🖤

"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” The Bear and the Lamb is a striking debut from Hallie Oak, blending danger, romance, and emotional depth. The story follows Alice, trapped in a violent marriage, whose life changes when her husband brings a wounded outlaw, Kodiak, into their home. A fragile connection forms between Alice and Kodiak, leading to a perilous escape that is shadowed by constant threat and difficult moral choices.
Told through dual perspectives, the novel builds authentic chemistry between two contrasting characters. Their relationship is thoughtfully developed, with emotional stakes that extend beyond traditional romance tropes. While familiar elements such as forbidden love and the grumpy sunshine dynamic are present, Oak delivers them with freshness and nuance.
Set against a vividly rendered 1890s Western backdrop, the novel’s immersive world building enhances both the tension and emotional impact. With engaging twists and restrained yet effective intimate scenes, The Bear and the Lamb is a compelling, suspenseful debut that marks Hallie Oak as a promising voice in dark Western romance.💛

I gotta gush on the author for a sec.

I follow her on Instagram and when she had her cover reveal I looked at this cover and thought WOW this is one of the most beautiful covers I’ve ever seen. I immediately went to add it to my TBR but noticed it was already there. That means she got me to add this to my TBR twice so I needed to pre-order immediately.

I’ve been watching how shes promoting her book on her social media and I’ve been enthralled everyday. I felt as if I was already inside this book before even opening the first page because of how well done her graphics/art look. She did such a great job marketing this and SHOWING the atmosphere.

Getting into the actual book, it was great! I was entertained and giggling, asking how tf they were gonna get out of these situations.😂 It really did feel like a western romance. Kodiak does not play around man. Shoot first ask questions later.

Alice has to go on a mental journey to let down her walls. What they’re doing is very “scandalous” and she’s a “lady” so it takes some time for her to adjust. There’s moments I was pissed at him, there’s moments I was pissed at her and somehow understanding both sides all at once. They’re lowkey toxic together butttttt I love it😏

I really liked how this book was able to wrap up their storyline and I’m very curious to see what else is in store for the series!

Every time I read a dark western romance, I always wonder why I don't read them more often! The general vibe of the time just gives something so special that makes it feel so high stakes!

This book definitely has plenty of trigger warnings, so you may want to double check the triggers for this book before diving in. These circumstances and characters are not soft, and the storyline reflects that.

Kodiak is just a fun character. He is morally black (you could maybe convince me that he is dark grey). He does what he wants and he doesn't feel bad about it. He has absolutely no care for anyone else....until Alice. Watching his journey of caring for another was my favorite thing to watch.

Alice....talk about someone who thinks that they know who they are and why, only for her to start questioning everything. She was also so much stronger and smarter than anyone ever gave her credit for and I loved getting to see that.

This book covers a lot and ended with me in happy tears. You work for it, but that ending is worth it!

overall: recommend
spice: open door

I love cowboy romances and historical romances so when I saw the beautiful cover and the title of the series (Fated Outlaws: A Dark Western Romance Series), I hit request on that ARC form so fast it hurt. I opened the ARC the next day as soon as I saw the approval, highlighted a quote on the very first page and just knew that this was going to be a book I fell in love with. Hours later, I was finished - book devoured!

It was everything I wanted based on the blurb, but also so much more. There were parts that had me laughing, others that had my heart racing and there was definitely a moment near the end where I teared up. I loved the morally grey characters and that they both said and did the wrong thing sometimes. Kodiak and Alice's chapters had such distinct voices, and that pulled me into the story straight away. Kodiak isn't a misunderstood outlaw who never actually hurt anyone, and Alice isn't just the quiet, abused housewife of a bitter man. I was completely invested in their relationship, how they changed each other, and in seeing how they tried to survive on the run!

I am so glad that the book cover and title caught my eye, because now I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

This book was a new genre for me, a historical dark outlaw western romance, and I may be hooked on them now! Taking place during the nineteenth century in the American Frontier, it captures the rugged danger pioneers were exposed to, the lawlessness that shaped their world and the human need to be loved.

Alice’s character epitomizes the plight of being a female on the frontier. Mostly viewed as possessions, many women suffered at the hands of men, and few had options. I love how her character has strength even in her dire circumstances and as the story develops, you see her intelligence and cunning become her weapons. Bear falls first and although a morally dark grey MC, his love of Alice, his lamb, and his determination to protect her had me swooning for him. Their relationship grabbed my heart, and I adore how these two broken souls worked to carve out a future against all odds.

With a plot that is filled with action and several twists that gave me anxiety 😆, the story moved quickly. I admire the author’s use of historical events and knowledge of this period of time which added authenticity to the novel. This dark outlaw romance with a fiery FMC and an outlaw MC with a dirty mouth not only brings the spice, it delivers a heart warming love story. Add it to your TBR today!

Thank you to the author and Happily Booked PR for the early copies.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 stars
🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spice: 3/5

The Bear and the Lamb completely surprised me.

Dark romance western is not a subgenre I would normally gravitate towards, but this book absolutely changed my mind. From the atmosphere to the character dynamics, it pulled me in quickly and never let go.

The story is gritty, intense, and emotionally charged, with a strong sense of danger running throughout. It was genuinely thrilling, keeping me on edge and constantly guessing what would happen next. That tension made it incredibly hard to put down.

The romance leans dark and protective, and the tension between the characters is compelling without feeling rushed or shallow. I really appreciated how the setting and tone added weight to the story rather than just serving as a backdrop.

The spice level sits comfortably at a solid 3/5, enough to add heat and intensity without overpowering the plot. The balance between story, character development, and romance worked extremely well for me.

Overall, this was an immersive, addictive read that kept me hooked from start to finish. While I’ll definitely be seeking out more gritty western romances after this, I’ll also be keeping a close eye on what Halle Oak writes next.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy darker romance with grit, tension, and emotional depth.

I wish I had known before how much I would absolutely love a spicy historical western!

This is a genre that had never really been on my radar, but seeing this cover I just HAD to give it a shot!

I adored every moment of Alice and Kodiak’s story. From unlikely-allies to lovers, their journey was such a fun one. Kodiak truly showed us that just because someone is the ‘bad guy’, he can be a GOOD MAN for his woman.

Alice and Kodiak changed each other for the better. Alice became stronger and started to really believe in herself, and Kodiak became softer and more apt to make better and safer decisions because of Alice’s proximity.

The Bear and the Lamb was my first foray into the historical western type romance and it definitely won’t be my last!

This book had an intriguing premise, but unfortunately it never quite clicked for me. From early on, I struggled to feel connected to the characters, which made it hard to stay emotionally invested in the story. The emotional beats felt distant rather than immersive, and as a result, moments that were clearly meant to resonate fell flat for me.

My biggest issue was the MMC, whom I genuinely disliked. Rather than coming across as compelling or morally complex, he felt grating and difficult to root for, which is a major drawback in a character-driven romance. The writing itself didn’t help matters—it followed a very formulaic pattern, making the plot developments predictable. Combined with a pacing that felt like it was dragging on, the story often felt longer than it needed to be.

By the time I finished, I was left wondering if this was simply a matter of personal taste. The outlaw trope is clearly a draw for many readers, but maybe it just isn’t for me. While I can see how this book might appeal to fans of the genre who enjoy familiar beats and archetypes, it ultimately didn’t deliver the engagement or originality I was hoping for.

Oh my SWEETNESS...
-Touch her & die ✅️" But this outlaw, this killer, says he’d spill blood to keep me safe, and the vow tears through me like a firestone ripping through the sky."
-Absolutely & utterly OBSESSED with his lady ✅️ “Never would.” I take her hand. It’s a promise, like signing my life away with a kiss to her knuckles. “There ain’t a place on God’s green earth you could go that I won’t follow.”
This book had everything I ever could want historical romance with an outlaw utterly obsessed & over protective bear of a man who would do any and all things for her. YESSS PLEASEEE 👏 spicy, sweet, & just the right amount of crime.

So, I would not characterize this as a dark romance.
It is no different than the gritty historical western romances I've read from authors such as Catherine Anderson, Joan Johnston, Rebecca Brandewyne and others. In fact, the plot was an echo of one of my favorite Brandewyne books, Love Cherish Me.
If you're a fan of realistic historical romance that harkens back to the heyday of bodice rippers, then this one's for you. It's more sexually graphic than those books, a little anachronistic at times, but immersive all the same.

BEST INDIE DEBUT SO FAR IN 2026 - Dark, high heat western romance 🤠😘
Spice level: 🌶🌶🌶🌶 (for a historical romance) the spice starts less than 20% in, which is almost unheard of for hist-roms!
Favorite trope: Fated mates....usually I am not a fan of this trope, but I loved that the couple just fit together ❤️‍🩹
Favorite quotes:
"I'm gonna give you what you prayed for, little lamb." 🐑
"Whatever happens, you're my greatest adventure of all." 🐻
"My bear. My starlight. Return to me." 💫
Overall reactions/feelings: 💥💰🔮🪢👋🍑🫦😏💀👀🇨🇱🚞🤠😍

Well that was a wild ride!!! And wow.
4.25 but I rounded up ❤️

I really loved the fast paced story and overall theme. The wild west fascinates me too and this was so much fun.
I devoured it in two sittings.
I’m here for you Kodiak 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Alice coming out of her shell and accepting what she wants was a YES. Throw in the nicknames and the action. The star/constellation theme. And I thought it was excellent.

I’ll read more from you! Thank you!

Just as always please read the triggers as there were some things that could affect you. 🫶🏻

I was privileged to ARC read this book for Halle Oak and I'm so grateful.
Not my typical read for sure but I believe it's important to try new genres.
This is a historical, cowboy romance that spoke to me.
Kodiak and Alice are amazing main characters for sure.
It is beautifully written and heartbreakingly moving.
Highly recommend!
