I was pretty sure I didn't need a Valentine's Day special featuring The Creeper and Livewire's romance and I was right. Mildly interesting at best.

However the back-up story from Dan Slott about a poor schmuck named Bill Zarro brought a big smile to my face and earned this comic an extra star.

Well this book came out as a nice surprise. I have to admit I was quite confused about the nature of it up until finally getting a chance to read it, I genuinely couldn’t figure out if this was supposed to be an elseworlds or just a fun Valentine’s Day special or what. But what we got was a surprisingly sweet love story to apparently come back around more this year, which is quite exciting. The story itself drives the creeper and livewire together and in the most perfect fashion the story starts with Jack Ryder becoming creeper with a “that’s what she said,” joke…literally me, bro, lol. Livewire has been in Stryker’s for quite a while and is finally up for parole. It seemed like she wouldn’t have gotten it, but a touch of luck from fate when some other inmates staged a prison break in front of her and she used her powers to defend herself and take them down, earned her a glowing recommendation from power girl and her card to freedom. But resources aren’t what they used to be, and she was just put back out into the street without any resources to help put her life back together. All while having the funds to equip her with an ankle monitor tracking her electrical output, with the explicit promise to put her right back in prison if it exceeds a certain threshold. No powers, basically. But wouldn’t you know it, the moment she was walking back to her secret untouched hideout and broadcasting studio and past the annoyingly loud preacher on the street, is the exact moment creeper was going live with his own audience to scare this preacher off as he’s wen annoying the locals when they’ve been trying to sleep. But this fateful encounter was love at first sight for creeper and a very awkward situation for the preacher who hates both of their looks. Livewire pushed her way through to get to her hideout and creeper scared the guy away. Using his audience he found out who she was and the moment she went live to anyone who may be still listening on pirate radio frequencies in this day and age…unbeknownst to livewire, creeper was her first caller. The two hit it off pretty much immediately as he got her talking about her day, her parole hearing, the fight she stopped, and how she got out of jail. They even dove back into her past to talk about how she first got arrested crossing paths with Superman. All of this is entirely relatable to creeper, they are both morally grey misunderstood characters who find understanding in each other and she doesn’t even realize she is talking to the strange nearly naked yellow, green, and red guy that was outside of her apartment mere moments ago. Their entire conversation was being broadcasted on livewire’s feed as well as creepers, and wouldn’t you know it…the very proactive Superman (Jon) is an avid listener of Creeper’s stream. That’s just plain smart, good way to keep tabs on someone like the creeper to make sure he isn’t actually hurting anyone. But through their discussions on the feed talking about how much of a struggle livewire has gone through to get to this point, Jon developed a few ideas to help parolees get better resources.

A week later Jon flew up to livewire on the street. She may have just shoplifted a few groceries but he went back and paid for them first before approaching her, lol. He actually came with a job for her, he thinks creeper and livewire should host their own public access show sponsored by the daily planet. She said it herself, technology has changed while she has away and she has a unique perspective from the disenfranchised that both of them can represent, but even more than that they both represent redemption and it is of course…a paying gig, which he should have started with if he wanted to recruit her, lol. So the plan was set in motion, a creeper and livewire tv show. They are both monitored closely anyway, so why not leverage that and grow a platform. Superman noticed the obvious chemistry between the two and convinced the powers that be that this could help with villain rehabilitation. But the problem, as always, is funding. So creeper took it into his own hands, he went to villains and convinced them this could be their chance to have a voice against the superheroes and he went to the heroes and convinced them this was their chance to monitor the sentiments of the anti capes crowd. Creeper is quite good at playing both sides, and suddenly the show “hardwired” was born! Up until this point livewire has heard the name creeper but didn’t realize who he was or that he was outside of her apartment when they first met. Creeper makes the hilarious decision to reveal he wrote fan fiction about the two of them, the moment he met livewire in person. But nothing weird, just friend stuff but he does ask her what happens when she blushes. This confuses her but then he gets her to blush but complimenting the hell out of her, actually revealing that she blushes purple. Which is such a small but sweet moment between the two of them and a really nice detail.

But now is the time for their first guest, and it’s none other than “the chained” the inmate who tried to break free and ultimately led to her freedom after he attacked her. This was just the bone livewire needed to chew on to get back j to the game, their careers took off from their as she absolutely ripped into him and every other guest they have on the show to sky rocket their platform. They had condiment king where they questioned he’s secret life as a corrections officer, they had the quiz who I haven’t seen since doom patrol, they also had a Steppenwolf impersonator, lol. But the more they went on the more the justice league disapproved of their platform and then everything really accidentally blew up when livewire suggested they get Jack Ryder on as a guest in the hot seat. It turns out that Jack has been posting a lot about her, this portrayal has creeper and Jack as two separate minds with the creeper acting as a subconscious to Jack. So with deeper in love with livewire, Jack started to have a lot of confused feelings about her, causing him to talk about her on the show, and ultimately start making videos bashing her because he doesn’t understand his feelings. Great management creeper, you failed to tip Jack off and you failed to tell livewire about your alternative personality and now it’s all coming to a head. And even worse, creeper is so head over heels for livewire that he won’t dare say no to getting Jack in the studio, especially when she hugs him and tells him how much he means to her. Instead he decided to do the worst possible thing, the moment before livewire was about to talk to killer moth…he told her the truth about him being Jack Ryder. She couldn’t even continue the shoot, the show went to a technical difficulties screen as she stormed off and creeper chased after her. She feels betrayed, used, and lied to, and that immediately causes her to use her powers…against her parole. But worst above all else, she really liked the creeper and now it’s all ruined. As soon as she took the creeper down, livewire herself is taken down as black lighting and the guardian come representing the JLU to take her back to Stryker’s for using her powers. Creeper is distraught, he doesn’t see it as her fault and he wants to fix it. So he decides a grand gesture is in order, he forces the crew to sign NDAs, takes all the footage from that day, and then manipulates it to make it look like creeper was attacking her. It’s already so easy to make people hate him, so why not add more fuel to the flame if it helps her out. But he can’t just put that out there without anything else behind it, so he gets Jack Ryder to rally his fan base against the creeper, admitting that he only said all those things about livewire because he likes her (alongside a lot of other objectifying terms) and what creeper did is uncalled for. Subsequently creeper rallied his own base, because he loves playing both sides, and told them he was sorry and is in love with her and would ever hurt her, but finds it ridiculous that Jack Ryder would treat her as some exotic bird in his collection and that they should fight back! Suddenly there was fighting in the streets from his two fan bases and it all worked to plan, as chaotic and disappointing as it may be in some regards but as exciting in others as Superman went to bat to get livewire out of prison based on the video creeper released. The two had their love story reunited moment in the middle of a mob as they admitted their love for each other and scrammed before the capes showed up. Btw, she is totally fine with being with creeper and Jack in private but only creeper on the public side, lol. As the superheroes showed up to break the mob up, creeper couldn’t help but learn something from seeing them protect the very people who hated them, that some people just need to let off some steam to feel like they made a difference. People know what revolution looks like, but not how to act on it for yourself. But all it takes is a spark of an idea to slowly build and allow a person to stick to those principals and start to live their lives by it until they have something new. Thad what hardwired is to creeper and livewire, their revolutionary spark that they are now living their lives by and we will continue to see in the pages of Superman stories coming up.

The end of this issue actually ends on an interesting little story by Dan Slott. I’m not really sure it’s supposed to be anything bigger than a fun few pages. But we follow the very depressed life of Bill Zarro, who works over at the daily planet. I have to admit, his life is pretty miserable. Financially in the dumps and he is constantly to blame for that. His entire family blames it for it, his neighbors are crappy, the bus he takes to work is crappy, his manager is crappy, the hot dog vendor is crappy, and then he gets home goes to sleep to do it all over again. But then one day he wakes up and everything is different. Somehow he just woke up in his bed but in Bizzaro world. And everyone is the exact opposite of how they are back home…and it couldn’t be better but for Bill. His family loves and supports him, his neighbors help him around the house, and the bus he takes to work has a massage chair. Sure their are some problems. The fire department starts fires instead of putting them out, cows fly, and the backwards speech is a bit much for Bill to get used to. But this is a paradise for him. But suddenly while enjoying a meal with his family, he gets a knock at the door…it’s Superman, from his world, and apparently some cross dimensional shifts accidentally placed him hear because of his similar his name is (names have power) and Superman is working with Bizzaro to fix it and get him returned home safe and sound. But Bill looks at Superman with a desperate and concerned face as he begs Superman not to take him back. An admittedly strange request, but it seems like Superman keeps it as the final page follows Bizzaro Bill waking up in the normal metropolis pleasant as can be through all of normal Bill’s crappy surroundings. I am begging for them to have Bizzaro Bill just walking around in the background of the daily planet from time to time, that would be hilarious.

I am a sucker for slice of life and rom/com stuff. This was a very fun and lighthearted read. I did not know anything about the main characters but it did not stop me from having a fun time with it. The second story was really funny and Slott nailed it with that one.

It was a cute story about an obsessed freak and a woman looking for redemption. They found love in all the wrong places. The second story was well done as well. If I was Bill, I’d stay too.

I’m not a huge Creeper fan, but love Livewire. This was a sweet tale of obsession and redemption. The Bill story was just funny.

What a waste of a story and the art was lazy and made this story even less believable for a superhero joke of an off beat story. It was painful to read through it.
