De heks van Brugge

Finn dacht dat zijn grootste probleem was hoe hij zijn duistere geheim verborgen kon houden tijdens het bezorgen van pizza’s. Tot hij op de deur klopt van Simon Laurent – rijk, bloedmooi en dodelijk gevaarlijk.
Wanneer heks Lina Vandevelde hem vertelt dat een gestolen Maya-artefact en een vergiftigde burgemeester geen toeval zijn, wordt Finn meegesleurd in een eeuwenoude magische strijd die onder de oppervlakte van Brugge woedt.
Met een naderende zonsverduistering moeten Finn en Lina de waarheid ontdekken achter drie mysterieuze sleutels voordat Simon zijn plan kan voltooien. Een plan waarvoor hij bereid is te manipuleren, verleiden en te doden.

This is the question posed by Finn De Wulf, a young werewolf faced with making the decision about whether reality as we know it should be merged with the dream world in Olivier Van Gierdeghom’s The Witch of Bruges. Set in Bruges, Belgium, a mysterious city that preserves its medieval essence for tourists, this cozy fantasy-mystery features Lina, a local witch whose chocolate-making includes magical effects. Lina says, “Magic is just a word for things we don’t fully understand yet … And dreams are the bridge between what is and what could be.”
The Witch of Bruges is a charming novel with fanciful characters like Finn and Lina, as well as a sardonic talking cat, a nitwit young social media influencer, and a handsome aspiring lawyer with dark family roots whose attraction to Finn leads both of them to challenge their own beliefs. Set against the allure of Bruges, the novel explores issues of identity and the connections between dreams and reality.
I can’t resist adding a quick note about how I found this book. As we wandered down a side alley off the main square in Bruges, we came across Olleke Wizarding Shop. The store carried Disney and Harry Potter memorabilia, as well as other fantasy-related items. Olleke’s book section wasn’t large, but of course it caught my eye, especially the cover of The Witch of Bruges, a book I’d never seen before. I left with the hunch that the gentleman seated in the store’s office area might be the book’s author. A quick Google check confirmed that lucky guess, and I went back in and purchased the book. I asked if he was the author, and he said, “How did you know?” I told him and asked if he would sign my copy. He obliged, writing, “To Gary, enjoy Bruges and my book. Olivier.” Thank you, Olivier. I have now done both.

I desperately wanted to like this book, after finding it in an independent book store in Bruges last year. The story sounded promising and with it being advertised as an LGBTQ+ Crime & Mystery fiction, I felt like it was right up my street!
However, unfortunately, I was severely disappointed. Firstly, the story appears as though it was vastly written by generative AI. I could be wrong here, but it fits every criteria for the language used, the sentence structures and the 2D characters. Even the way in which the book is formatted, with its short chapters and poor flow, it feels obvious. In addition to this, there are some words that are clearly poorly translated.
On the point of 2D characters, there weren't any characters with any real depth, I couldn't connect to any of them.
- We have Lina whose personality was baking magic into chocolates and having a talking black cat who had the same personality as Salem from Sabrina the teenage witch.
- We have some dry social media influencers, who made me internally scream and I honestly can't remember (or didn't care to remember) their name.
- Creepy Simon
- We have the MC Finn De Wulf who is your stereotypical token gay student. I imagine that this is how a straight person would pencil in a gay character, if they've never had the privilege of having any queer friends. Oh and Finn De Wulf turning out to be a werewolf was an eye rolling event. This is another reason why I feel the book was written by AI, because that isn't even a subtle foreshadow, it's his name!

What really p*ssed me off with this book, is that 28 pages in and Finn has already been dragged into a place where he was supposed to be delivering pizza, drugged, assaulted and then raped by creepy Simon. When he wakes in the morning he acknowledges snippets of what happened, but never truly addresses the trauma and betrayal of it. Later in the book, he ends up going on a date, and getting into it with creepy Simon, DESPITE HOW HE HAD DRUGGED AND RAPED HIM?
What the actual fuckerdoodle is that about?
Honestly, can we truly call this queer fiction if the only queer narration that stands out is a character being drugged/assaulted and then dates his abuser? Oh and as a bonus there's a casual chapter called "unhappy gay day". Come on now... This narrative is incredibly harmful and certainly doesn't celebrate queer joy or pose as a queer allied book.
This book had the potential to be magical, especially in a gorgeous setting like Bruges, but everything about it was off. The ending was also incredibly anticlimactic. Wouldn't recommend.

Het was op zich een goed geschreven boek, maar wel heel duidelijk dat het vanuit het Engels vertaald was. Hier en daar leken Engelse woorden niet vertaald te zijn. Ze waren niet helemaal passend als slang of het taalgebruik wat de jeugd gebruikt, maar gewoon vergeten om naar het Nederlands/Vlaams vertaald te zijn.
De karakters en setting zijn sterk neergezet, en het was absoluut geloofwaardig. De personages voelden echt aan.
Waar het boek voor mij aan kwaliteit inleverde, was het stereotiepe karakter van de homoseksuele man die het met iedereen doet. Hij werd zelf ook verkracht, maar ik denk niet dat de auteur dit zelf doorhad, want het karakter leek er niet veel last van te hebben. Of ook maar iets bij te voelen. Ik heb het over het hoofstuk 'Overgave'. Hierin raakt het hoofdpersonage de controle over zichzelf kwijt door een verandering, en kan dus geen toestemming meer geven. Naderhand kan hij zich ook niks meer van het voorval herinneren omdat hij zichzelf niet meer was.
Toch wordt hij naakt wakker naast een andere naakte man, en is het duidelijk dat de schrijver voor ogen had dat er seks heeft plaatsgevonden. Het boek besteed hier later vrijwel geen aandacht meer aan. Alsof het niet heeft plaatsgevonden of het niet grensoverschrijdend gedrag was. Erg jammer, op zijn zachtst gezegd.
De vele spelfouten en grammaticale fouten waren ook beschamend. Vooral voor een tweede druk

Laat de cover je niet misleiden. Dit is geen wollig romantisch verhaal over een heksje op een bezem zoals je zou vermoeden. Dit is een young adult, urban fantasy verhaal over heksen en weerwolven. Over jarenlange vetes. Over jezelf ontdekken en mogen zijn als onderliggende boodschap. Een spannend verhaal dat zich afspeelt in Brugge, die schone. Bekende plekjes worden beschreven en de fameuze Belgische, zelfs Brugse chocolade die een grote rol speelt in dit verhaal laat je het water in de mond komen (al zijn de pralines niet altijd even onschuldig). Wat een leuk en spannend boek! Het ziet er klein uit en ´maar´ 274 bladzijden maar laat je ook hier niet misleiden want de pagina´s staan goed vol en doen het boek veel groter en dikker aanvoelen. Enige minpuntje een passage waar zinnen soms een beetje aanvoelden als vertaald Engels, maar misschien net zo bedoeld zijn als manier van groots spreken. Heel benieuwd naar het tweede deel ´Operatie Feniks´ dat binnenkort verschijnt.

Het verhaal op zich was erg leuk. De beschrijvingen van Brugge waren erg duidelijk en precies zoals ik me herinner van toen ik een bezoek bracht daar. De droomwereld/onderwereld waren erg creatief.
Alleen het taalgebruik vond ik niet erg fijn.
Soms stonden er random engelse woorden in nederlandse zinnen alsof de schrijver ze gewoon was vergeten te vertalen. Dit gebeurde zo vaak dat het me uit het verhaal trok.
Ik irriteerde me ook erg aan Kaylee’s taalgebruik. Het was alsof de schrijver heel erg probeerde te klinken als gen Z (mijn generatie) maar er eerder een gen Z karikatuur van maakte.
Ik hoop dat dat anders is in het tweede deel.
Verder vond ik het wel een leuk boek.
