The Healer and the Warlord

Rate this book
Kidnapping her was the easy part. Letting her go might destroy him.

With her unprecedented healing magic, Alyx has lived a sheltered life as the daughter of the Lord of Clan Padra. She chafes under her parents' constant watch and protection and dreams of making her own path. When a legendary Warlord steals her for his master, she finally has a chance to prove she can defend herself—but protecting her heart might prove to be an impossible task.

Kelvar has always carried out his Lord’s missions without question, using his immense destructive power for the glory of Clan Katal. Kidnapping a rival Lord’s daughter and holding her for ransom should have been simple. Instead, he finds himself caught between his sworn duty and a desire that won't be denied—no matter how strong he believes himself to be.

Magic pulls them together, their clans tear them apart, and the limits of love are tested as they journey across the desert.

Steamy, bingeable, and filled with legendary magic, The Healer and the Warlord is a fantasy romance with forced proximity, banter, and a love that can move mountains. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

The Healer and the Warlord is a prequel novella to the Ballan Desert Trilogy. It can be read as a standalone, but the legend of Kelvar and Alyx continues in the main series.

I've been reading fantasy novels since I was a little girl stealing books from my older sister’s shelves, and that has developed into a love of writing and storytelling. My writing is currently focused on fantasy and paranormal romance. When I'm not sitting in a local coffee shop writing and consuming an iced americano, I am a nurse researcher focused on breast cancer genetics. Though born and raised in the Chicago area, I live in Maryland with my loving husband and our two cats, who enjoy contributing to my work by walking across my keyboard at inopportune moments (the cats, not the husband).

This is a sweet and steamy romantasy novella that packs quite a bit into about 100 pages. Kelvar is a warlord who is tasked by his master to kidnap an enemy clan lord’s daughter (Alyx) to hold her for ransom. They start to fall for each other as they make the trek back to Kelvar’s clan.

This story featured an interesting magic system where both MC’s drew their magic from the desert. I usually love healer FMC’s and Alyx is both kind and brave, while Kelvar is protective and honorable. The writing is mostly polished with a few quirky metaphors. The love story felt slightly rushed, but was still very sweet. I had fun reading this and I really couldn’t ask for anything more in 100 pages.

Reading a novella is a great way to get a feel for an author and I’m interested to know more about the magic system in this series. There are two other full books out, and I’ll be adding the first in the Ballan Desert series to my TBR.

Thank you to SC Grayson for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

For some reason I always love when the FMC is a healer 🫶🏼

Entertaining and fairly straightforward prequel novella that sets up this world well, but could have used a touch more. The desert has a personality and motivations of its own, which was cool. The relationship between the h and H is complicated as it develops since they have chemistry and a sense of understanding with each other, but he's also kidnapped her in the dead of night from her father's camp to ransom her. The h is sheltered, but powerful with her type of magic. The H is a renowned warlord with an enormously destructive power himself. Both have some growth while together.

There's a road trip kind of feel because the H is supposed to take the h back to his lord and the desert's giving them the runaround. He's protective of her. She's not a badass, however she has other skills. Some of the descriptions/internal thoughts had a bit of repetition. There were a couple spicy scenes. The story was light overall on depth and offered a somewhat simple solution to the conflict of them being at the whims of their respective leaders (still a cool part to this though). But the ending sets up the series and it was an ok read. Shoutout to the horse!

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama. The H has some experience briefly mentioned and the h had only had light making out previously.

Some tropes/themes:
☆ Healer FMC x Fighter MMC
☆ Both have powerful magic
☆ Their clans are enemies
☆ Sheltered FMC who wishes she could spread her wings
☆ MMC treats her with care and respect
☆ Awesome horse sidekick
☆ One horse
☆ Cuddling for warmth
☆ Sentient desert
☆ A tiny bit of angst
☆ FMC grows to feel more free
☆ MMC willing to fight for their relationship
☆ Some graphic violence
☆ HEA/HFN ending - epilogue's not far into the future but they've got a firm start

The only way I could have enjoyed this more is if it was a full length novel. I wish it was a full length novel, so I could have more than 120 pages of Kelvar and Alyx. Will absolutely pick up the series after reading this prequel.

I absolutedly fell in love with the Dallan desert and would love to read much more about it! So when I finished this novella and discovered there were two more books taking place there, I immediately added them to my TBR.

The story is simple enough, a warlord gets the mission to kidnap the daughter of someone important, but on the travel back they fall in love. It is the setting that really makes the novella for me. The pacing was a little fast, I would have liked it a little slower, but it didn't feel rushed. It is a novella, so the faster pace is expected. I would have liked a little more backstory and depth, but again, it is a novella. But due to the lack of substance, I can't rate it higher than 3 stars.

It was a very fast read and I finished it in one sitting. The story is cute and quick, a really nice palette cleanser between heavier books. It definitely sets up an appetite for the other books.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.

Well, that was a tasty little amuse-bouche of a prequel to The Ballan Desert series. I stopped reading the first book in the series (Blood of the Sands) to read this and I'm so glad I did. This story is about the origins of Kelvadan and the couple who founded it. It made me even more excited to finish Blood of the Sands. I think I'd suggest reading this first, since you get a lot more history behind the clans and the city of Kelvadar. I like how it could be read as a quick standalone, when so many stories these days require time investments. Yet the romance doesn't feel rushed or come out of nowhere.

Thanks to Susan C. Grayson for this eARC! Here is my honest review.

Echoes of Desire

‘The Healer and the Warlord’ is a short prequel that introduces the world of the Ballan Desert Trilogy. Against the scorching heat of the desert, a healer and a feared warlord cross paths, forced to work together under circumstances where trust is barely possible. From the very first pages, the story centers on their interaction, and that tension quickly becomes the driving force of the narrative.

The novella’s greatest strength lies in the chemistry between the main characters. Despite the limited page count, S.C. Grayson manages to create a connection that feels natural, never rushed or forced. The forced proximity acts as a catalyst for small, intimate moments that reveal how trust and feelings gradually develop. These moments linger, making the story feel larger and more substantial than its short length might suggest.

The Ballan Desert itself is more than just a backdrop; it presses down on the characters and shapes their choices. The setting is unforgiving and atmospheric, with just enough detail to spark curiosity about the wider world beyond this prequel. As an introduction to the trilogy, the novella succeeds in setting the tone and inviting further exploration.

At the same time, the short format occasionally feels a little rushed. Some events and emotional developments could have benefited from more room to unfold. Readers who enjoy intricate plots or richly developed fantasy worlds may find this a slight limitation.

Overall, ‘The Healer and the Warlord’ is a fast-paced, romantically charged fantasy story that shines through its atmosphere and character dynamics. It is a promising and enjoyable introduction to Grayson’s world, leaving readers eager to discover what comes next.

Forced Proximity | Enemies to Lovers | Slow Burn | Desert Romance | Grumpy/Sunshine | Opposites Attract | Secret/Hidden Feelings | Dangerous Setting | Romantic Tension | Enemies Forced to Work Together | Protective Instinct

This was my introduction into S.C Grayson’s writing, as well as The Ballan Desert world. This novella was so immersive and had me hooked after the first chapter. We immediately get a thorough idea of our setting, which is a desert that may or may not be sentient. I’d typically imagine a desert as being quite plain, however this setting was described into something complex and beautiful. The magic system is very unique as well and is interwoven with the desert.

The love story was beautiful and I adored the way it progressed. Our MMC Kelvar and our FMC Alyx are supposed to be enemies, however they quickly realize that they have a strong attraction to each other. Their magic is also attracted to one another’s, which is a microtrope I LOVE. Though they fell for each other quickly, it still felt genuine and sweet. And the spice was spicing. Chef’s kiss.

“If my power was the searing, unforgiving intensity of the desert sun, then hers was the calm majesty of the velvety night sky, lit with endless stars on a moonless night.”

“He was the dangerous beauty of the desert incarnate, and he was mine.”

This book was full of excitement and intrigue, but didn’t feel overwhelming for a short novella. You also don’t have to have already begun reading into the Ballan Desert world to enjoy and understand this novella, which I appreciate.

Thank you to S.C. Grayson for the eARC of this novella. I will be continuing this series based on how much I loved this prequel. 🫶🏻

This is a short quick read a fantasy romance novella set in the rich, desert shaped world of the Ballen Desert a prequel to the Ballan Desert trilogy.

FMC Alyx is strong and vulnerable, a healer with very powerful and rare magic with strict protection around her all her life. This made her yearn for her freedom as she wants to provide and do more rather than be sheltered away.

Kelvar the MMC embodies the archetype of a fierce warrior who is unsettled by his growing interest in someone he should have no feelings for. He is a legendary warlord loyal to his clan. He kidnaps Alyx for ransom, but instead it ignites something unexpected between them and they get closer through emotional connection & the use of magic as they travel through the harsh desert together despite their clans’ being rivalries & are against them being together.

I felt this book was fast paced & very engaging & easy to read. Even with the shorter length, there’s enough character growth & action to make the story feel complete solo. The writing is descriptive strong enough to ground the reader in this fantasy desert setting without overwhelming the romance. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as I really enjoyed this & am intrigued by the story p.s. I finished this in 1 day :)

ARC review - Thank you S.C. Grayson for this arc.

The Healer and the warlord is a novella part of the Ballan desert series. It's a prequel to the series so you don't need to have read it before picking up this novella.

Kelvar is a powerful warlord. He is tasked with the kidnapping of the daughter of a enemy clan lord. During the trip back home, the desert isn't cooperative and doesn't let Kelvar reach his camp so easily. Alyx will worm her way into his heart.

This is a nice and quick story. Kelvar and Alyx are fairly lovable.
I understand that it's a novella so it can't be too detailed, but I found the conclusion very simplistic.

I had not read the rest of the series, but it did make me want to try book one!

I absolutely love the Ballan Desert, so when I saw a prequel novella I needed it ASAP no rocky.

This is a fast-paced insta love story. Quick and cute. Pacing is fast as it's a novella. I can't rate it too high because there's not much substance. The quickness made it not very believable all around.

I definitely VERY HIGHLY recommend you read the Ballan Desert. I would've been fine without reading this novella. It was a fine easy read, but I don't think it really added any substance to the story of the Ballan Desert (which is phenomenal).

Walking blindly into a prequel of an established series can always be a hit or miss reading experience, even for those marked as comprehensible without context. The Healer and the Warlord, prequel to the Ballan Desert trilogy, manages to succeed in not overwhelming the reader with excessive bursts of information, nor presuming the reader will already possess said information in order to fill in gaps— but it does so by perhaps veering too far in the opposite direction.

The Healer and the Warlord started out quite strong, and in truth, it would be disingenuous to suggest it significantly nosedived or plateaued. It remained enjoyable throughout, but were I to draw a point of criticism, it did feel, perhaps fittingly to the setting, a little barren. As a novella, it was effectively to the point with little to no filler, but as a story, it did suffer a little from a lack of any form of buffer to the plot and dynamics. I was left wanting a little more, not just of the world, but the minimal characters we are shown to inhabit it through this instalment.

Our protagonists, Alyx and Kelvar, who alternate perspectives— always a win in my book— are two of only four speaking characters introduced to us over the course of the book, with, per my memory, no reference to any other named characters beyond this lineup, leaving the plot feeling very confined to our two leads in a way that felt at times restrictive to development rather than conducive to the romance. Again, with understanding that this is, for all intents and purposes, only a brief glimpse at the world of the Ballan Desert series, I’d very much have liked to see a more broad depiction of the worldbuilding and magic system, a deeper exploration of the clans and their workings, and further development to backstories and relationships. I would have, in all honesty, not at all minded seeing this extended into a full-length novel, allowing it the time to expand upon its established plot points. The romance itself could have done with more depth and development, but the characters themselves suffered this the most. Both Alyx and Kelvar— and the resolution to their story— would have greatly benefited from more time being allotted to detailing their home lives prior to the first page, to provide weight and context to the climax and antagonistic figures in the story, who as of now, feel more like props than characters. While still a satisfying enough conclusion, the conflict was not only introduced too late but also resolved too swiftly to feel entirely earned or weighted, which could have been rectified with mere minor additions.

Overall, The Healer and the Warlord holds much of the appeal that might draw in the average romantasy fan, but lacks the bones to stand on its own outside of its series. While it does succeed in stoking curiosity in the greater story and lore, it does so by providing a comparative lack of it, and therefore struggles to standout as a standalone— but the potential is absolutely there, it just needed to be granted the page time to develop.

3.5 stars, rounded up to four.

(PS, please never refer to it as a flower. I may be a hoe, but I am not here to garden.)

Thank you from the bottom of my soul and heart to this wonderful author for sharing an ARC of this prequel novella with me!!

“This is a horrible idea”
“We can’t”
“Why not?”
“I don’t remember”

“Your gentle bloom is more powerful than my raging storm”

I’m absolutely speechless. I have no words. Not one expression could ever fully describe the intense feelings I experiences while reading this book. Seeing it all come around. Finding the answers to the intricate legend that haunts Keera and Erix’ life. I loved it. Kelvar and Alyx were beautiful. Beautifully devastating and sweet. Horribly in love with one another. Ready to forsake everything for one another. Ready to break down the desert and bring up a new world if only they could live in peace. I loved it. Loved every second of their story. Loved the enemies to lovers. Loved the forced proximity. Loved the moments when she was breaking down his armour. Loved the moment they finally admitted what was growing in them. Loved it all. And loved the ending. For them was a happy one. And I couldn’t have asked for more.

“Because it’s hard to believe something so fine and delicate could exist in the same desert that if full pf war and death”

“Don’t deprive me of the noises I work so hard to pull from those pretty lips”

ARC Review: I received an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions stated are my own and honest.

This is the first book by S.C. Grayson that I’ve read, and I’m absolutely in love with her storytelling. This steamy romantasy is a standalone novella, a prequel to The Ballan Desert Series. Although I’m not familiar with this series, Grayson writes in a way that allows readers to jump in and quickly understand what this world is about.

She builds this captivating desert fantasy with a magic system that feels fresh and completely woven into everything: the setting, the characters, and their lives.

The perspectives of Kelvar and Alyx feel authentic. They’re well-developed characters whose motives and logic make sense. They fit perfectly within their world, making you feel as though you’re right there with them. The chemistry and banter between the two are absolutely perfect.

For such a short read, it ended nicely, though I wish it had been longer since I had such a fun time reading it!

I received a copy from Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op in exchange for an honest review.

As the extremely sheltered daughter of the Lord of Clan Padra, Alyx has been itching to escape her father and all of her restrictions. Her life is turned upside down when she’s abducted by Kelvar, the warlord of Clan Katal, and discovers she has more freedom than she ever did with her parents. What’s even stranger is that she’s feeling drawn to her captor, but is there a romance brewing or is she really as soft and naive as her family has always said?

In this surprisingly action packed novella, we follow Alyx and Kelvar through their rotating perspectives as they begin their journey as captive and captor. I really liked both characters and enjoyed following them both. I also really liked that the pair seemed to be on equal footing after a bit vs Alyx truly being a captive for long.

I was shocked at how much world building was able to fit into the story without it feeling overwhelming or out of place given this is a novella. Plus, we’ve got everything from an overbearing family, rough upbringings, friendship (and lack thereof), and romance packed neatly in this book that’s less than 130 pages and it doesn’t feel rushed or otherwise squished in. It made me excited to check out the rest of the series, though this book can be read as a stand alone!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this. I’m hoping I like the next group of protagonists since I don’t think we’ll be following Alyx or Kelvar after this, but I have faith in the story since I had a lot of fun reading this. I wouldn’t say this was super steamy as that was saved for nearly the end, but I do like that it was a bit of a slow burn that’s built on trust and communication.

This one surprised me a little—in a good way.

The Healer and the Warlord is one of those short romantasy reads that you think will be simple… and then suddenly you’re way more invested than expected. It starts with a pretty classic setup: a healer gets kidnapped by a warlord. Nothing new there. But the way the story handles their dynamic is what makes it work.

Alyx isn’t just some helpless girl dragged along for the ride. She’s sheltered, yes—but she’s also stubborn and very aware of her own strength. And Kelvar? He looks like your typical ruthless warlord, but the longer you stay with him, the more you realize he’s not as cold as he pretends to be. That tension between who he is and who he’s supposed to be is honestly what kept me reading.

What I liked most is how quickly the emotional connection builds without feeling rushed. It’s forced proximity, enemies-to-something-more, and a bit of that “I shouldn’t care about you… but I do” energy. And because it’s a novella, everything is a little more intense—there’s no time for drawn-out misunderstandings.

The world itself is there, but lightly sketched. You get rival clans, magic, desert travel—it’s enough to set the mood without overwhelming the story.

That said, you can definitely feel the length. I kind of wanted more—more backstory, more tension, more time with the characters once things start shifting between them. It ends in a satisfying way, but also like it’s just the beginning (which makes sense since it’s a prequel).

I was completely drawn into The Healer and the Warlord from the very start. Alyx and Kelvar’s chemistry had me invested in every scene, and their enemies-to-lovers journey was both exciting and heartwarming. The desert world felt so vivid, and the magic made it even more enchanting.

After finishing this, I couldn’t help myself—I immediately added the rest of The Ballan Desert series to my TBR! Fast, steamy, and character-driven, this novella is a must-read for fantasy romance fans.

Tropes I loved:
Enemies-to-Lovers
Forced Proximity
Adventure/Quest
Magical Abilities
Clan Rivalries
Slow-Burn Romance

I'm usually not one for desert settings, but I actually really enjoyed this.
A lot of this story focuses on the growing understanding between the two main characters and how that blossoms into love. I think having the desert be the setting allowed this to be the focus beautifully. The dangers of the setting were realistic and made the story more believable.
The build-up to the ending almost seemed too much to be true and yet made absolute sense. It closed in such a great way to open for a series that I will definitely be diving into!
I highly recommend it to those looking for a simple plot focused on slow-to-build romance with protection, touch her and die, magic, and more!

Thank you for the e-ARC book, I couldn’t put this book down. It is the perfect introduction to the series. Which is now next on my TBR list. It is fast-paced but not so fast you want it to slow down.

The magic system is a unique one to me, I have not read many books with this type of magic. That was a really nice change. The world building is also different from what I usually read, so the magic and world building make this book so much better for me.

I loved the characters so much. The FMC was sweet but learned she can be strong in her own way. The MMC gave her room to learn her strength and was able to learn from her.

The book was so hard to put down, I was able to read it in one day once I started, I did not want to put it down!

Explicit. I loved this novella! The story takes place in a desert, which is its own character and influences the people that live there. The magic system was described beautifully and I loved how magic itself felt like another living being. The characters were engaging and I loved how they viewed each other throughout their journey together. There were very few side character, but there was a horse so extra points for that. All in all the story is brief but sweet, and the conclusion was unexpected in the best of ways. If you like nature magic and enemies to lovers lite, you will like this one.

This was a fun, fast prequel - read it in one night. I loved the author’s writing style and look forward to jumping into the Blood of the Sands series. I’m very selective about instalove done right - this was done right. My only quip is I wish it was longer because I’m so here for the FMC and MMC. I would’ve loved to stretch out the last 20% of the book to give that ending so much more emotional damage. But consider me damaged enough cause I’m pushing the series up in my TBR for sure.
