Jovita Idár founded schools, organized resistance, and wielded her pen to defend Mexican American civil rights.

Marguerite Higgins broke barriers as a Pulitzer Prize–winning frontline war correspondent.

I’m thrilled to share my new book, Her America: Eight Women Who Transformed the Nation. History is full of remarkable, resilient women who fought for a more equitable society, and this book tells the stories of eight such women. From a revolutionary writer to trailblazing civil rights activists, such as Harriet Tubman and Eleanor Roosevelt, these women faced down immense challenges to create lasting change.

What makes this book unique is how it brings these figures to life. I’ve woven together gripping historical-fiction scenes to transport you directly into their worlds and show you what they fought for and have paired these scenes with detailed nonfiction sections that delve into their astonishing experiences. It’s my hope that this blend will give you a full and intimate understanding of their lives, and if you’re like me when I dove into the research, you’ll find inspiration around each corner.

This isn’t just a book about women of history; it’s a testament to how one person’s profound belief and persistent effort work together to build a stronger future.

As a reader, your support is invaluable. Please dive in, get to know these unforgettable women. Thank you for being part of this journey!

Her America by Heather B Moore is about eight women who transformed the nation. I learned a lot of each of these progressive women:

🌟Mercy Otis Warren
🌟Sojourner Truth
🌟Elizabeth Cady Stanton
🌟Susan B Anthony
🌟Harriet Tubman
🌟Eleanor Roosevelt
🌟Jovita Idar
🌟Marguerite Higgins

I loved Moore’s style. I’m the kind of person who wilts at the thought of reading a non-fiction book, but each story is told with the perfect blend of historical fiction and real, true facts. That manner of writing worked for my brain and I was immersed in each woman’s tale, learning new information and understanding their roles in history better.

The instances of strong belief, fierce determination, and extremely hard work shows the reader that anything is possible. This collection is powerful and thought-provoking, and I appreciated the resilient examples given in this empowering book.

I love reading biographies and memoirs, and this book about “Eight Women Who Transformed the Nation” was exceptional.

As usual, Heather‘s meticulous research shines through in each of the profiles of these extraordinary women. Some of them I had never heard of before, but even the ones I had, I learned so many new things about them. They were brave and so courageous, and did things that truly helped transform the nation.

Recommended for anyone who likes books that inspire and are well written, and stories about strong women and social justice.

If you are looking to learn more about influential women in American history, then this book is a good choice for that. It features eight different women, some you may have heard of and maybe some new ones too. I personally had never heard of a couple of the women. The women include Mercy Otis Warren, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idár, and Marguerite Higgins. I enjoyed reading the fictional stories based on truth, as well as learning facts about each woman. I thought some of the women’s stories were told very well and were very interesting. A couple were not as informative which I’m guessing is due to less information about them. Overall though I enjoyed learning about these women and I recommend.

Great book to read in July! I knew of the first six women but had t heard of the last two. I learned some new historical facts, but I love how they were interspersed with a story that enabled the reader to get to know the heroine on a personal level.

Her America: Eight Women Who Transformed the Nation by Heather B. Moore is a wonderful book highlighting a few of the many women that have changed the course of our country’s history.

There are countless women that have sacrificed, selflessly given, enhanced, changed, and enriched our country’s history and culture. Most are not named, or specifically remembered in history books, but nevertheless they are there. Ms Moore chose eight of those women to highlight and present to the reader in this fantastic book.

Each woman below is presented separately with a mix of a fictional story and the historical facts added along with it to give the reader a sense of their lives and their contributions.

Mercy Otis Warren
Sojourner Truth
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Susan B. Anthony
Harriet Tubman
Eleanor Roosevelt
Jovita Idár
Marguerite Higgins

There is far more to learn about each woman, but this gives the audience a spark of inspiration to see more information about each woman, research further to add their own list of inspiring women, and maybe even ignite a passion to change the course of history in their own way.

This collection of 8 incredible women's stories completely took my breath away! Heather has such a gift for seamlessly blending creative fiction with nonfiction to create deeply moving, heart-touching narratives. Her America is captivating from start to finish, showcasing how these remarkable women left their permanent mark on history.

While each woman faced her own unique trials and struggles, they all shared a fierce determination to pave the way for a brighter future for women. I loved diving into their personal hardships, family challenges, and health battles while witnessing how they persevered against every single obstacle without ever giving up. The strength these woman must have had is inspiring!!

There are so many touching moments in these pages that brought tears to my eyes and gave me the exact strength I needed to keep pushing through my own challenges. 🤍📚

Her America by Heather B. Moore takes a brief look at eight women who transformed the world. Six of the women are famous and I knew most of the tidbits about them. However the last two were new to me and was most impressed by Marguerite Higgins a journalist during the Korean War. She did not take any breaks given to her for being a woman. I love the grit, confidence and courage to just do the job she was hired to do. The writing was good and I enjoyed the facts wrapped around the fictional accounts. I am always looking to learn new things and chose this due to my love of feminine stories.

Thank you to the publisher for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

Excellent collection of selected honorees, providing a truly multi-cultural view. I learned a lot, even about iconic women whose names I've always known like Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony, Harriet Tubman, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Expertly researched, this book should be incorporated into all American school curriculums.

ARC Review

I love history, especially American history. Living in the Boston area there’s a lot of focus on founding fathers, and it was great to see into the lives of women who also influenced the country. I liked that it was written as historical fiction to help the story flow and make for compelling reading.

I loved seeing the relationships of these women with their husbands and men in their life. In an age when the role of women was narrowly defined, these women, with the support of their husband’s stepped out of the expectation society placed on them and did something brave. I loved seeing this example of defining your own life and purpose, while also valuing their families.

This was such a great book to read during such a big anniversary year for our country.

This unique women’s history book highlights the stories of eight extraordinary women who played pivotal roles in shaping America’s history. From the pen of Mercy Otis Warren, who championed American independence, to the passionate advocacy of Susan B. Anthony for women's suffrage and equality, these women’s stories are full of courage and resilience.

Blending historical fiction and nonfiction, this book brings each woman’s life in an immersive way, backed by meticulous research.

A great read for anyone interested in women’s history and social justice, this book shines a light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in American history. It will leave you feeling grateful for the courage of these women who worked so hard for a better future!

Content for consideration:
Descriptions of violent beatings and assaults of enslaved people.

A note: At times, it felt as though Christianity was shown to be a driving force behind the societal degradation of women, instead of incorrect theology.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My review reflects my honest opinion.

Her America: Eight women who transformed a nation by Heather B. Moore is a historical non-fiction and biographical fiction.
Heather does a really great job of telling a fictional story using facts about these amazing women. Some areas are story telling while others are more factual info. I really loved how she did it.
The audiobook is amazing with the different narrators who really bring the stories to life.
Some of the women I had heard of but didn’t know all the details of their lives. Others were completely new to me and I really enjoyed learning more of our country’s history.
I’m just amazed at how many of these women were still able to have lots of children and still do all the things. Most were avid readers, writers, and spokesman for good causes. Their husbands/families/friends were usually big supporters. It really got me thinking about who is in my corner really helping me to chase what I am passionate about and who I am cheering on to do the same. Amazing women!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own, and a review was not required.

Her America by Heather B. Moore was such an interesting and enlightening read. I really enjoyed the way she blended historical fiction with meticulously researched nonfiction to bring the stories of eight remarkable women to life.

I learned so much about these women, and I was surprised by how many of them I had never heard of before. Even with the women I remembered studying in school, such as Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Eleanor Roosevelt, I learned details and perspectives I hadn’t known. I was also surprised that several of them knew or had interacted with one another. It was a great reminder that there is always more to learn about the people who helped shape history.

From Mercy Otis Warren’s contributions to the American Revolution to Sojourner Truth’s fight for abolition and equality, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony’s work for women’s suffrage, Harriet Tubman’s courageous efforts to free enslaved people, Eleanor Roosevelt’s influence on human rights, Jovita Idár’s advocacy for Mexican American civil rights, and Marguerite Higgins’s groundbreaking work as a war correspondent, each woman had a story worth knowing.

Her America is an engaging way to learn more about eight women who challenged the status quo and helped change the course of American history. I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and also a gifted copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and voluntarily given.

What a tribute to 8 incredible women who fought for women's rights and human rights in the USA. I love that this included 2 of my life long heroines - Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. I loved learning more about their lives.

I was fascinated by Mercy Otis Warren and her writings and plays during the early years of our country. Her falling apart with John Adams was so intriguing.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony are 2 pillars of the women's rights movement. They were warriors for women and our right to vote.

I really enjoyed learning more about Eleanor Roosevelt. What a lady! I have newfound admiration for her.

Jovita Idar is new to me. But her work really stood out to me. I appreciate all she did to try to end the segregation of Mexican Americans.

Marguerite Higgins is also new to me. I love her gumption and her fight to stay at the forefront of the war efforts. She sacrificed so much to get the story and to be one of the only women at the forefront.

These women paved the way for women today. This book is fantastic and has helped me better appreciate the sacrifices of each of these women.

John Adams said - “History is not the Province of the Ladies” - and in Her America: Eight Women Who Transformed the Nation, author Heather B. Moore more than shows how inaccurate Adams was in his statement.

The book is unique in that the author chose to alternate between historical-fiction scenes and nonfiction sections, which is my only gripe with this book. I don’t quite love fiction clouding reality, but I appreciate it in this instance.

This book is so well-written and engaging. The author uses nonfiction scenes to help bring life to the women and help settle us in their eras, and the nonfiction focuses on the women’s accomplishments.

I’m sad to share that I was only previously aware of five of the eight, with this being my introduction to Mercy Otis Warren, Jovita Idar, and Marguerite Higgins. Of the other five, I learned so much more about them and their accomplishments.

I’d like to thank Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

It was so fascinating to learn about these 8 incredible women in history. I have heard of some of these women, but to read their stories taught me so much about the history of the United States. Moore does a fantastic job of blending non fiction and fiction! I loved learning about these women in a way that felt as if I was experiencing their life myself. Her America: Eight Women Who Transformed the Nation by Heather B. Moore is an inspiring and engaging tribute to eight remarkable women whose courage, determination, and vision helped shape the United States. Through a compelling blend of historical facts and fictionalized vignettes, Moore brings these women’s stories to life, making history feel both personal and accessible.

I especially appreciated the mix of well-known figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Eleanor Roosevelt, alongside women whose contributions are less widely recognized. Each chapter offers a glimpse into the challenges they faced, the sacrifices they made, and the lasting impact they had on American society. The vignette format makes the book easy to read and revisit, allowing readers to absorb each woman’s story individually while gaining a broader appreciation for the role women have played throughout history.

Beyond being informative, this book is deeply inspirational. It highlights the resilience, leadership, and determination of women who refused to accept the limitations placed upon them and instead helped transform their nation. While each chapter serves as an introduction rather than a comprehensive biography, it sparks curiosity and encourages readers to learn more about these extraordinary individuals and countless other women whose contributions often go unrecognized.

Especially in today’s world, books that celebrate women’s voices and achievements feel particularly valuable. Her America is a thoughtful, accessible, and uplifting read that not only connects readers to the past but also inspires them to consider how they might make a difference in their own communities. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history, women’s stories, and the individuals who helped shape the world we know today.

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is truly incredible. A great tribute to these women who helped shape America's history for women but also many other demographic groups. Mercy Otis Warren, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idár, and Marguerite Higgins. I loved reading and listening to the audiobook of this one! I've studied about most of these women over the years and have felt inspired by their strength and desire to share truth and make things right in many different regards. I am amazed at their determination to better their own circumstances, but also to try to better circumstances for others. They were very selfless in many regards. They didn't necessarily set out to make a big impact but were just wanting to do what was right in their daily actions and choices. And by so doing and being, they changed lives and made a great impact for generations!

I loved how some of the ladies talked about were connected and influenced each other in their work. They came from some hard circumstances and lost much in staying true to their convictions. But the sacrifices made truly have blessed so many lives. And in ways that I think we take for granted much too often. I'm so grateful for Heather B. Moore taking the time to write this book, showcasing just a small group of women amongst the many who all have done something to shape our nation and our lives.

I loved listening to the audiobook! Each of the 8 women have a different narrator portraying her. I wish I could sit and talk with these women and hear more of their incredible stories. I'm sure I would shed many tears if I could because of the sorrows and heartaches they endured and kept experiencing but kept working hard for their convictions! I'm forever grateful for them!

This is a wonderful book club read! Even if you read one of the lady's story, talked about it and then moved on to the next one. Or focused on a couple of them. But there's so much that could be talked about with each individual woman!

I highly recommend reading and listening to this incredible book!

Content: Clean. The book deals with struggles and hard moments in history but is written in a very sensitive way to show how these women came to be shaped into who they were and their convictions for why they stood up for injustices! I'd let my young teenagers read it.

I received a copy from the author. As well as an audiobook copy from the author, and a digital copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Heather B. Moore’s Her America: Eight Women Who Transformed the Nation brings the lives of eight American women into sharper focus. She provides a concise, interesting, and accessible format that will delight and educate both history buffs and the curious reader.
The women range from an America Revolutionary agitator who uses the written word to push for liberty, to a modern-day wartime correspondent who used her words to record the horrors of war. Many of the women are well known, but Moore includes lesser-known women to highlight the astounding courage and resilience all these women display when facing danger and adversity. From physical harm to vicious societal resistance, it is impossible to not see parallels in our current environment. Even readers familiar with these women will learn something of interest.
Her America is different in the presentation, using pages of fictionalized scenes to introduce the woman and later presenting more traditional historical material. This makes the book a very inviting read, particularly for those who do not usually read historical non-fiction. However, at times, the more factual sections seem rushed, and the achievements then take on a summarized list form. While this format is at times jarring being juxtaposed to Moore’s flowing fictionalized writing, it is minor and does not diminish the importance of Her America as a valuable and interesting addition to women’s history. Readers will find interesting passages that will make them pause and consider the battles women still fight today.
Recommended for everyone, for who should be willfully ignorant of the contributions of women.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with the opportunity to read Her America.

This book is just amazing. I loved getting to read about each and every one of the women. Some I had heard of and knew a little about. Some I had never heard of, so I learned a ton about them. All of them are amazing and have contributed to life here in America in one way or another.

This book is one I read a bit of and listened to a lot of. I really liked the audio book. Each of the women is voiced by a different person. They all did a really great job reading the section about their woman. I highly recommend the audio.

This book has sections about:
Mercy Otis Warren - ignited a revolution with her politically impassioned plays and became the first published female historian of America.
Sojourner Truth - electrified audiences with her “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech and turned her freedom into a crusade for abolition and equality.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton - authored the Declaration of Sentiments, launching the women’s suffrage movement.
Susan B. Anthony - built an unstoppable campaign for women’s voting rights that reshaped American democracy.
Harriet Tubman - rescued enslaved families through the Underground Railroad and later commanded Union troops to freedom.
Eleanor Roosevelt - redefined the role of First Lady and shaped the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Jovita Idár - founded schools, organized resistance, and wielded her pen to defend Mexican American civil rights.
Marguerite Higgins - broke barriers as a Pulitzer Prize-winning frontline war correspondent.

I loved the way the author mixed fictionalized accounts from the author with factual things. This author is really great at writing about real people and making them jump off the pages. The women in this book do that!

Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG13
Moore has put together short stories on eight influential women that combine biographical information with enough historical fiction to bring these real women and their situations to life. The women chosen to be highlighted in this book include the first female historian in America, the first woman in US history to both plan and lead a military raid, a First Lady, a cofounder of La Cruz Blanca (The White Cross), and a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist.
While each section focuses on only one woman’s life, there are multiple heroes in every story. These women worked together with both those that came before them and those around them to accomplish great things—great things that allow us to enjoy the freedoms we take for granted. Every voice matters, and these women demonstrated how we can create a better future for our loved ones as we use our voices.
All eight women highlighted are American; they are described as White, Black, and Mexican-American. The mature content rating is for kissing, mild innuendo, and mentions of alcohol and debauchery. The violence rating is for corpses, assault, blood and gore, physical abuse, gun and bomb use, discussions of slavery and war, and mentions of suicide and murder.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Shadow Mountain Publishing. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

Heather B. Moore has created an engaging and well-researched collection highlighting eight women who left a lasting mark on American history. What makes Her America unique is its combination of carefully researched nonfiction with short fictional vignettes that help bring each historical figure to life.

The author’s writing is accessible and engaging, making history feel personal rather than overwhelming. Whether you’re already familiar with these women or learning about them for the first time, the book provides a thoughtful look at their lives, accomplishments, and the challenges they faced during their time.

While readers may have varying perspectives on some of the individuals featured, the book succeeds in presenting their historical significance and encouraging readers to learn more about the impact they had on the nation.

If you enjoy American history, biographies, or stories about influential women who helped shape the United States, Her America is a worthwhile read. It would also make an excellent choice for book clubs, classrooms, and anyone interested in learning more about the people behind pivotal moments in American history.

I really enjoyed this novel and eight women who really helped shape the future of American and women's rights. I liked that there was a mix of historical fiction to help the story flow, with bits of actual historical facts listed within the story. It was fascinating to learn just how many of these women were within the same circles and society and quite a few of them knew of and were friends with each other and many others in government positions. It was nice that each section wasn't terribly long and you could read about one woman in a sitting. I learned a lot about each woman, and what they all accomplished or tried to accomplish while they were alive. It was fascinating in that they were all mostly from a time when women were to be the good house wives, raising the children and many had very supportive family members and/or spouses who helped encourage their beliefs, works and drive to better things for others. The historical fiction pieces really made it an easy read, and you don't feel at all like you are reading a history textbook, but felt like you were there with these women in some instances. Thank you to the author and publisher for the complementary novel. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

An engaging, informative book, HER AMERICA, by Heather B. Moore, is a flawless integration of History and BioFic.

Author, Moore, gathers 8 inspiring women whose lives impacted the advancement of women and underserved populations: Mercy Otis Warren, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Elanor Roosevelt, Jovita Ida’r and Marguerite Higgins. Moore highlights the accomplishments and impact each woman achieved to advance equality for women, indentured people and Mexican people.

Careful research is evident and supported by her research documentation that appears at the end of each chapter. In the Book Club Discussion Questions, readers are treated to a summary for each woman and thoughtful questions to foster understanding about their effects on life as we know it.

Sometimes, history can be boring; a rehashing of facts ad nauseam. That couldn’t be further from this reading experience. Moore seamlessly slips between facts and fictionalized scenes that deliver an engaging experience drawing readers into the lives of these remarkable women.

Highly recommended for readers of history, biographies, women’s suffrage, advancement of underserved people and more. An excellent addition for school and public libraries📚

This was a really interesting read! I love history so much, and this was a fun book that highlighted the women heroines of the past. Oftentimes history books pass over these stories, so I was really excited to read this book.
I enjoyed the various women who were picked for this book. It was fun to have a mix of different women, some who were more familiar to me and others who I didn't know as much about. I really enjoyed getting to hear different stories that weren’t covered in traditional history books. Also the style of fictional vignettes along with a nonfiction account kept me engaged the entire time. While this took a little bit to get used too at first because I was expecting a more traditional nonfictional style, it made the book feel different and fun.
The individual stories were shorter than a full length book because it was a full book split into 8 separate stories. While I understand this format is shorter, I would have loved to see a more nuanced approach to these women's lives. The book focused on the more positive parts of the stories, and I would love to hear even some of the criticisms of these women' s lives. Ultimately, no one is perfect, so I think historical biographies can balance celebrating figures while also being honest about their failures.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves history! It is full of fun and quick short stories about women who you may or may not have heard about before.

This book is a beautiful blend of historical and non-fiction. Heather B. Moore is a fantastic author covering many genres, talented in all. I love her books with ties to history and this is another one to love.

Moore has done meticulous research on the lives of eight women who helped shape the nation. The women Moore picked, and the way she tells their stories is beautiful and powerful. These women themselves are beautiful and powerful.

If you are not a lover of non-fiction, don't let the history aspect scare you, pick this book up. It's non fiction in a historical fiction approach. It's one of Moore's specialties in writing if you ask me, she's great at it. You'll come to love non-fiction. And if you already are a lover of non-fiction, pick this one up for a different approach! Either way, this is a collection that will inspire you, give you more to think about and change how you view things and people. Well worth the read, don't miss out on Her America. Be changed today and then go help make changes for good yourself, little by little.
