Throat slit. Heart broken. They’ll meet the wraith within her.

The first time Carwynn almost died, she was thirteen.

A skeletal-faced demon slit her throat.

A pudgy Cherub saved her.

And nothing has been normal since.

Carwynn has spent years running from what she is, and the darkness clawing awake inside her. When secrets finally catch up to her, she flees to Luckland, a realm born of ancient holiday magic and ruled by dangerously charming criminals. Determined to finally find a place where she belongs.

But Carwynn isn’t human.

She isn’t safe.

And the more she buries her power, the stronger it grows.

The Skell King, a monster who believes Carwynn is his prophesied heir, will tear the realm apart to claim her and bend her power to his will. As loyalties fracture and temptation grows, Carwynn is drawn into a web of forbidden magic, dangerous attraction, and betrayals that could destroy her.

Magic always demands a price.

To survive, Carwynn must decide who she can trust—and what she’s willing to become.

A weapon…
Or something far more dangerous.

Because the Skell King is coming.

And he always reclaims what belongs to him.

This pulled me out of my reading slump 🥹

In the beginning, I didn't feel I was in the mood for fantasy at the moment (mood reader problems). But I loved the idea of the lands being based on holidays, the cherubs, and the back story. It kept me going since it was unlike anything else I have read. I am SO glad I did because this was amazing. It was also perfect timing to read between Valentines Day and S.t. Patty's Day, too.

I received an ARC from the author.

I cannot find the words to describe how much I adored this book. I don't often give ARCs 5 stars, but I forgot half way through that this wasn't an already published, raved about book! The plot, the writing, the world, was all amazing and I felt fully immersed in it. I didn't want to put it down, I loved Carwynn's story and her amazing friendships and found family she had. I loved how it was a perfect mix between romance and plot and I absolutely loved the ending. If you need a great fantasy, that's an easy to read, fast-paced book, this is for you. This is the type of book that once it becomes popular, will be all over booktok (for all the right reasons)! Amazing work, truly.

I had the chance to read an ARC of this book and I’m honestly so glad I did because WOW! It was so good. From the very first chapters I was hooked. I didn’t want to put down.

The FMC was hands down my favorite. She’s hilarious, strong, and totally the “takes no shit” type of character I love reading about. Her personality made every scene more entertaining, and I found myself rooting for her the entire time.

There’s definitely some spice in here too 👀🔥

Overall, this book was fun, engaging, and left me desperate to know what happens next. I seriously NEED the sequel NOW!

I had the honor of receiving an ARC for this book. The world building and character development was excellent. Some parts were a bit hard to follow in the beginning with the jumping from past and present. After the time jumping I was thoroughly invested in trying to figure out the dynamic between Pogue, Carwynn and Finley. I am looking forward to the continuation of this story. Also the little cherubs were one of my favorite parts of the book.

THIS is such a BAD$$ Fantasy Novel!!

Oh. My. Word. How extremely original. I want EVERYONE to read this if you like, Dark Fantasy, Romance, paranormal-yy, fun reads that involve redemption, female rage & the power of truth!

I enjoyed every single word of this book!
I could just imagine the audio version of this would be phenomenal!

Found family is one of my most favorite tropes to read, followed by realm travel and this one has both, and SO MUCH MORE! The creatures of lore, shifters, winged, Elementals, Seers, Sayers oh my gosh, how can you not want to consume this gem!!

Each land is very unique & I CANNOT FREAKING WAIT TO GET TO EOSTRE LAND!!!!!
I am fully invested in Carwynn and her entire life!!

I had the honor to read this book before the release and absolutely loved the story. The begging was a little hard to follow jumping from different time periods. But after that I truly enjoyed the variety of perspectives from the different characters. It has a little spice to it but not over the top. I loved the little cherubs they were one of my favorite. Carawynn was a relatable character, I felt she responded the way someone who grew up in the human realm not know they were magical would, she was naïve to many magical realm things, but through out the story has good character development. I feel like when I finished this book I had more questions so maybe a book 2?

Let this dark romance transport you to a feral realm. A story that's both exciting, funny, and mildly spicy. You see much from the perspective of one character, with occasional glimpses from someone else's. You'd think that would be boring, but nothing could be further from the truth. You get to know the characters very well, the story is well-structured, and the descriptions of the characters, magical creatures, and places are vivid. I literally enjoyed this story. I can only hope there's a sequel. Do you like dark romance that transports you to a feral realm? Then I definitely recommend this one.

3.76 stars.. Although this book took me a little while to become invested in, I ended up enjoying it. I loved the cherubs and little mischievous “brownies”. The backstory of the world was very interesting and I even found myself chuckling at times throughout the book. I would definitely read more by this author for sure.

I love so many things about this book! I really wanted to be able to give it 5 stars, and so many individual aspects were 5 stars, but ultimately it felt unfinished, and I rated it 3.5 stars.
The characters were amazing! The supporting cast and even the more minor roles of the cherubs and brownies added so much life to the story.
I loved Carawynn’s, the FMC, roommates and the sense of friendship throughout the book that’s often lacking in romantasy quests, where so often it’s FMC alone vs the world.
The setting, imagery, language and accents were fabulous. I could truly envision the various places through multiple senses and the language and accents made it fun and addictive to read.
Along with that was the comedy effortlessly ingrained in the story, something else usually missing in Romantasies.. but it didn’t take away from the quality. This still felt like a serious novel.
This was probably one of my favorite depictions of faerie realm too. It’d didn’t come across as juvenile or fake, it was fun and believable and not overbearing.
What ultimately hung me up was that I felt the plot was lacking- the overall concept is amazing, and I can see where it’s headed for the series, and while I understand the notion of a cliffhanger to lead us to a sequel, this individual book just felt incomplete, like we needed more to wrap up book one.

We got a strong prologue where we learned a woman was captured by the Skell King, forced to produce a heir based on prophecy, had the baby, hid the baby, then was murdered. Her best friend held guardianship of the child but raised her in the human realm, before bringing her back to the faerie realm in her 20s.
But then, what is the overall plot for book 1- what’s the purpose? Is it Carawynn trying to find her birth father? Is it Carawynn trying to find the relics, and if so why? What’s their significance? Is it Carawynn entering and winning the Fucanditus - which again leads to why does she need the relics? Is it Carawynn helping re-establish Loveland’s candela? Is it Carawynn trying to defeat the Skell King?
I feel like we got an inkling of all of these but no clear path forward, and no resolution to any of these in book 1. Hence, feeling unfinished. I think if we could have gotten the answers to some of this, with then a twist at the end leaving us in a cliffhanger, then this would have been a 5 star read.
Instead I feel like I read 400+ pages with no answers at all. Instead of feeling like … “this aspect is done, what now?” I instead just felt.. “what?” I want more!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

What did I just read?? Does it really have to be over?? 😭 This little unassuming book surprisingly shot straight to my list of top reads for 2026! I like to think I'm a little stingier with handing out my 5⭐️ ratings to ARC books, but this gem of an adventure with an exquisite writing style deserves nothing less. I don't know what I was expecting but I definitely didn't think I'd spend the whole book intermittently laughing out loud, gasping in surprise or horror and curling my toes at some of the hottest s3xual tension I never knew could be possible in a setting where pudgy cherubs magically appear at the most inopportune times.

C.A. Orfei has created a world that somehow feels both dark and terrifying and also like a warm hug. I didn't even think those two scenarios could exist together in one book, but I'm here for it. Each realm is based off of and themed like a holiday (think Hallowland = Halloween, Loveland = Valentine's Day, etc), and you'd think this would be absurd but instead it's fascinating! Magic is ever present, giving each setting a mystical, fantastical feel. Luckland is my favorite with its vibes like the Shire straight out of Lord of the Rings and its leprechaun-esque red-headed criminals!

Carwynn might be my favorite FMC of all time with her hilarious internal monologue and a personality that shows both her vulnerability and strength. She gives a slight Bryce from Crescent City vibes. She's relatable on a level I've rarely encountered in an FMC. This book is full of memorable, well-developed side characters, including Carwynn's spunky girlfriends, a heartless creepy villain, a gaggle of magical mischief-seeking cherubs, and a brooding shadow daddy that'll make you 🥵. But if shadow daddy's aren't your thing, fear not, there's also hot golden-retriever-type werewolf-shifters with Irish accents!

It was full-speed ahead from page one, and the romance was cleverly intermingled with the plot so it was never overpowering. This is the first ARC I've read this year where I'm left feeling excited for the next book in the series. Please read this magically, unusual, dark and witty little book!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an advance reader copy of this book; this review is my honest opinion.

Dark Magic, Holiday Realms & a Shadow Daddy I Didn’t Expect to Grow On Me

This may be the best book I’ve read all year — and the fact that it’s indie? Even more impressive.

Although it’s labeled as a dark romance, Grove of Trees leans heavily into romantasy in the best way. Yes, there are dark elements — death, imprisonment, corruption, assault in Carwynn’s backstory — but this story is deeply rooted in prophecy, power, and a heroine discovering who she truly is.

Carwynn is the daughter of the Skell Queen and (possibly) the Skell King — a ruler who imprisoned her mother in pursuit of a child with both seer and shadow abilities. After her mother’s death, she’s hidden away in the mortal realm, raised in an orphanage where bullying and isolation shape her into someone guarded and self-reliant. Watching her return to the magical realm and slowly step into her power? Incredible.

And the world-building?? Obsessed.

Each land draws inspiration from human holidays in a way that feels whimsical and dark all at once — Loveland with its cherub army (my absolute favorite), the shadow-drenched Hallowland, luck-driven Luckland, earthy Eostre Land, and icy Vinterland. It almost felt like Candyland reimagined through a fantasy lens. I haven’t read anything quite like it. You’ll absolutely fall in love with the sneaky yet incredibly sweet army of cherubs — mischievous, powerful, and impossible not to adore.

The multiple POVs and timeline shifts added so much depth. We learn the history of this fractured world as Carwynn learns it herself, and I loved unraveling the prophecy alongside her. And then there’s Pogue — the brooding, shadow-wielding enigma from Hallowland. I won’t lie… I couldn’t stand him for a good portion of the book. But once his POV started slipping in? My heart began to open... slightly. I still have my eye on him though.

This story had me laughing, cheering as Carwynn unlocked her abilities, and absolutely wrecked by the ending. I needed more pages immediately.

If book two truly delivers deadly games and trials like it’s hinting at? It’s over for me.

Highly recommend for readers who love:

Prophecy-driven romantasy

Unique, themed fantasy realms

Shadow daddies with trauma

A heroine stepping fully into her power

Spice woven into high-stakes magic

I’m still thinking about this one. Five stars without hesitation.

3.5⭐️ ┇ BookstagramBookTok

I loved this unique, eerie world where each realm is inspired by human holidays—Hallowland, Loveland, Luckland, and more. It’s whimsical, dark, and unlike anything I’ve read before.

Carwynn, our FMC, is very likable. Her internal monologue is hilarious, and the balance of strength and vulnerability makes her incredibly relatable. I loved watching her slowly uncover her powers.

The side characters were just as memorable— her fun roommates, mobster like leprechauns, mischievous cherubs, a shadow daddy, a shifter. Pogue, our broody shadow-daddy, was my favorite from the start. There are potentially three love interests, but I’m definitely hoping it ends up being Pogue.

I did find myself a bit confused at times with everything happening and all the information being introduced. However, it was still a really fun ride overall. And that ending was wild—it perfectly sets things up for book two, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Rcvd an ARC from the author.

We meet Maura, the Skell Queen, who has been prophesized to give birth to their salvation. She was forced to marry the Skell King, who is evil and cruel and will stop at nothing to stop the prophecy. Her life is forfeited after she gives birth but hides her daughter. We then meet Carwynn, who grew up in the human realm, has had a rough time since childhood. A nasty scar on her neck from the Skell kings thugs and an angel to saves her with is cherubs. Her adoped fathers David and Wyatt have always been there for her. Carwynn knows about the prophecy and that the dead Skell Queen is her mother....father is unknown but she knows deep down. Carwynn is exhibiting new powers that she cant explain and when she helps out the local dealer Lachlainn with finding out who is killing people, she is attacked by an Ancient and thwarts it with the help of David. Things are not what they seem and Carwynn is learning she is the last to know things for her "protection" but the secrets are costing her. She is saved by Alver, a seer, who shows her a vision and it includes some from her dreams, she knows she must enter a trial to piece together her dreams that involve relics. Carwynn is more powerful then she thought and when more ancients come out to play, it is either her or them and she chooses herself. Drama, deceit, untapped powers and OMG moments make this a good read.

Are you looking for a book that feels like your best friend is telling you her life story, intrusive thoughts and all, while living in a romantasy? This is the book.

The world building is so unique! There are five realms based on holiday folklore (💘 ☘️ 🐣 🎃 🎄), each drawing from different magical elements like darkness, nature, fertility, luck, and light. I loved that we get to discover the world right alongside the FMC.

Between the dark humor and the random intrusive thoughts, Carwynn is incredibly relatable. She has dealt with real hurt and deep insecurities, but she handles them like a BOSS. she works on finding herself, while trying not to loose herself.

And the side characters? Ugh, I love them! Her two adoptive dads and two besties are everything. Don’t even get me started on the Cherubs:Pudge, Huck, and Honey!

The three MMCs are still a bit of a mystery. They are a BIG part of the story, but we don't have all the answers yet—and honestly? I really enjoyed the slow burn of information.

C.A. Orfei, I need to know more! Who is she going to end up with?! 😭

The end is set up PERFECTLY for book two. Take me to Feck Fest!!

3.5. I was really torn on this. The characters are fantastic, the world building is well done, and there is an interesting story there. However there are times when the story gets a little lost. There are subplots that sometimes overpower the main story. They are good subplots, but I wanted more of the main story. I am also good with a slow reveal of information, but all of the secrets got a little tedious at times. I wanted a little more information. I did find some minor errors as well.

That being said, I still want to know what happens and will read the next book. I love the world and want more of it. There is room for prequels, too. This is fantastic for romantasy fans who are more character and relationship focused.

Bonus points for a beautiful cover and a great dedication.

I received an advance copy of this book for free and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I was thoroughly surprised by this book! The begining had me hooked. The story is so unique, and the author’s descriptions really make you feel fully immersed. I love the world-building, character development and how easy it is to get pulled into the story. I lost a little interest in the middle but the plot thickens and you find yourself pulled back in.
If you love fantasy with a sprinkle of dark/paranormal elements, a little spice, and lots of fun, quirky banter, this is a must-read! The MFC is a baddie with so much potential to develop as the story progresses. I can’t wait to see where the author takes it next.

Wow. This had me captivated from the beginning, I have begged the author to hurry up and finish book 2 and she promises she’s working on it. I was slightly skeptical about the names of the realms but it was addressed by the fmc in a way that I LOVED. I could not put this down. I read it in less than 24h and failed to do all of my moming duties like clean and cook and just sent the kids to my husband. Seriously so good I have read it twice now. This is a new author you will want to take the chance on. She had me going “wait wtf” from the beginning.

What. In. The. Actual. Crap.
The cliffhanger is giving me Onyx Storm all over againnnn! I went to go to the next page and then went numb because I don’t even know what to do with that last page I read. I have so many questions!

So the characters are great, you melt right into the world, and the you have this whole plot full of mysteries that I NEED ANSWERS to.

My only side note is that the writing stands so well on its own that I don’t think the amount of cursing in it is needed.

Well done! Cannot wait to see where this story goes next.

ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you love fantasy with layered worldbuilding, intricate twists, and just a touch of romance, this one’s for you.

I’ll admit, the beginning felt a bit slow and slightly confusing as the world unfolded, but once everything clicked into place, I was hooked.

The FMC completely stole the show for me. She’s sharp-witted, fiercely strong, and absolutely the “doesn’t take anyone’s nonsense” type of heroine.

Needless to say, I cannot wait for book two.

I love romantasy books like this! The main female character is trying to figure out her past when she finds more than she expected. So many cute guys around her making you wonder who she will end up with. Multiple view points are used to expand on the story but it leaves more questions than answers. It’s definitely a page turner and the ending OMG. Take the time to read this book if this is your genre you won’t be disappointed.

I received this book as an ARC from the author. There were a lot of things I liked about this book, but there were also a lot I didn't. I loved David. I loved the comedic aspects sprinkled in. The cherubs were very fun whenever they appeared. This book felt long which isn't usually a good sign. It was long without a whole lot of story progression in my opinion. The world was different and fun, and I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

Hooked from the beginning. This is such a different take on fantasy with what feels like a little bit of mafia essence thrown in. The characters are well written and so easy to fall in love with. The world building is great and I love the mess of fantasy world with human realm. I am gonna need more because how do you end a book like that!

Book 1 of series that makes you so frustrated book 2 isn’t out yet! The story and characters got better and better as it went on. Trials, some spice, leprechauns, wolves, fairies and a shadow wielder……What more could you ask for!! FMC starts to learn about magic and her true power and I have a feeling she’s going to kick butt in the upcoming book.

Oooh! This was GOOOOD! The world building gave dark "Nightmare Before Christmas" vibes whereas the plot and romance gave some ACOTAR vibes. This does leave you on a slight cliffhanger but it's definitely satisfying! Hoping book 2 is released soon! I am super excited to see what else this author does!
