I wished so badly for it to go in a different direction than the one it went in. It started so so so strong but went off the rails into weirdness which just had me scratching my head, honestly?
In what world should a victim of months long torture, SA, starvation, assault, isolation, degradation, humiliation be subjected to ''you are a spoilt brat'' conversation from a lapdog of an MMC.
''What are you going to do, Kazimir? Spank me?" from a woman who has just been beaten within an inch of her life. Who just fled captivity one day ago with broken ribs, broken face and a potentially broken hand!
So many decisions were made in this book that just baffled me. I was enraged and then I was just confused because what?
And he forced her to have the baby? that's just cruel. He had no right.
The storyline started out promising, but there was a lot of repetition. The main characters repeatedly expressed how they felt about each other and rehashed past events when really I was interested in the story progressing. I also had hoped for a more substantial epilogue that tied up some loose ends.
In some places, it was better than Ilya and Mara's story, but Ilya was a piece of shit in his book and continues to be one here as well. Okay, he used Svetlana and then fell in love with Mara, but to stop caring about a person and leave them to their fate after they were by your side for two years says a lot about his character! Then, we have the "push and pull" again here until almost the very end because Kazimir doesn't man up and tell Ilya the truth; I didn't understand why he hid for so long considering Ilya was happy with Mara—why would he have been upset that Kazimir helped Svetlana? Like I said: piece of shit! I would have liked one more chapter with them happy together because the epilogue wasn't enough given how things unfolded. For me, the book ended with them appearing somewhat resigned—him loving her and settling for her any way he could just to have her, and her, with no money, no help, and a child, choosing the easiest and most available path. Aside from the fact that we saw throughout the book that she finds him attractive, I didn't notice any other real closeness between them.
