Not A Thriller
This Reznik series is usually reliably entertaining, but this book is…in a word, lame. Early on, I noticed there were lots of unnecessary sentences, restating things, and I realized it was “padding.” Do it enough, and it adds up to lots of extra pages. I got 50% of the way through and realized there had been no real action yet, just lots of exposition. Ultimately, this is a wafer thin plot with no resolution. Worse, it paints the lead character Reznik as a clueless incapable dolt rather than a hyper aware hero.

I was very disappointed with this book. I have read all the. Books in the series and liked them. But this story line just rambled on and on.Then ended with no conclusion. Then I checked the next book coming out says it start off with one of the characters in his book who protected the whole book is killed. Very, very dark.

Disappointing, slow unbelievably and unnecessarily complex action, too many turns leading nowhere
Not like a regular Jon Reznick story, very slow reading. Took me five days to finish what normally takes a day. Complicating the story seemed to be a way to continue it thus making it so tiring. Too bad.

I normally love Resnick books and have read them all but in this one nothing happens and then it just.. ends? Really disappointed. A couple of moments of action but nothing like previous books.

Covert specialist Jon Reznick is in New Orleans visiting a dying friend when he gets a call from a lawyer. A senior CIA operations director, Stephen Leahy, is being held in a psychiatric hospital in Maryland. His lawyer says Stephen has uncovered a chilling and illegal government plan. While Reznick is skeptical, he starts to investigate. He’s running out of time to expose a conspiracy before hundreds of innocent Americans are sacrificed for a lie.
Reznick is a former military and a former covert operative who still does occasional work for the American alphabet agencies. He’s an excellent shot, highly intelligent, fearless, and tough. He’s a straight-talker, capable, patient, resourceful, methodical, resilient, self-motivated, doesn’t easily share feelings, and can be a deadly killer. He’s resourceful, principled, and has a strong moral code.
With high stakes, time constraints, and very little in the way of verified intelligence, Reznick joins forces with the remote technical expertise of Trevelle Williams who has advanced cyber security and hacking skills and investigative journalist and author Caroline Sullivan. The story has great pacing for the last two-thirds of the story, but it is somewhat slow in the beginning. A twisty and absorbing plot and plenty of exciting scenes occur as the story unfolds. The dynamic plot came alive with the amount of suspense and conflict.
Once again, the world-building was first-rate and allowed this reader to easily visualize what was happening and where it was happening. The plan being investigated felt very realistic, but scary to consider. My problem is with the ending that doesn’t exist. Too many items are left up in the air making the book feel unfinished and leaving me unsatisfied. Will things be resolved in the next novel?
Overall, this high-octane thriller was intriguing, thought-provoking, and a powerful page-turner. There’s never a dull moment in this series.

This is book 16, Hard Shadows, in the Jon Reznick series, but it feels totally different from the older books. Usually, Jon is blowing things up and getting into gunfights, but this time, it's like an intense detective mystery. Jon has to use his brains and investigative skills more than his fists, which is a different change of pace.
The story starts when Jon gets a call while in New Orleans. A high-level CIA director named Stephen Leahy has been thrown into a secure mental hospital in Maryland, and everyone thinks he has gone completely crazy. But he tells Jon a terrifying secret about dirty politicians in the government and they are planning a fake attack on American oil companies over in Guyana so they have an excuse to blame Venezuela and launch an invasion to steal their oil reserves. Jon isn't sure if he should believe this story at first, but then Leahy’s dad mysteriously drowns right after finding out the truth. That is when the action kicks into high gear.
Jon teams up with his reporter friend Caroline, who uses her contacts, to get them some help in nailing all this information down. Suddenly, Jon is running from government assassins, getting shot at and attacked. Jon and Caroline are then both running across different states, trying to dodge elite assassins and find secret contacts who are too terrified to talk.
It gets a bit slower in the middle because there is a lot of dialogue, talking to informants, and moving things around. But the tension never stops building. The ending doesn't wrap up every single little detail, but Jon manages to stop the immediate danger and stay alive. It leaves the door open for chaos later, and it sets up the next book Hard Blood, book 17 in the series.

Hard Shadows, the sixteenth installment in J.B. Turner's Jon Reznick series, proves that this action-packed thriller franchise is still going strong. While longtime fans will appreciate seeing familiar faces, each book stands on its own, making it easy for new readers to jump in. This time, former Delta operative and off-the-books CIA assassin Jon Reznick finds himself investigating a government conspiracy that puts him on a collision course with the very agencies he once served.
From the opening pages, the story never lets up. The action is relentless, the suspense is constant, and there isn't a single dull moment. As a reader, I was completely invested—but for Jon, things go from bad to worse as he uncovers secrets that force him to question the institutions he's dedicated his life to protecting.
What I appreciated most was that this never felt like a political novel. Instead, J.B. Turner places Reznick in an impossible moral dilemma, challenging both the character and the reader to wrestle with difficult questions about loyalty, duty, and doing what's right. It adds an emotional depth that elevates the story beyond a typical action thriller.
The audiobook is elevated even further by **Jeffrey Kafer's** outstanding narration. His confident, commanding performance perfectly captures Reznick's grit, determination, and internal conflict while maintaining the fast-paced intensity that keeps the story moving. Kafer has become synonymous with Jon Reznick, and once again, he delivers a performance that makes it hard to hit pause.
With compelling characters, nonstop pacing, and plenty of twists, Hard Shadows is another gripping entry in the series. And while the ending wasn't what I expected, it leaves just enough unresolved to make me eager to dive into the next Jon Reznick adventure.

I enjoyed this book however I was slightly disappointed with the way things ended up. I think I have come to expect more from Reznick.
Every body knows Jack Reacher but with 16 books under his belt, Jon Reznick could give him a run for his money, as the tough guy you want on your side. He's pretty handy with a gun too, this all means the story has plenty of action. He might be a retired black-ops specialist but that won't slow him down as he fights for what he believes is right or in this case wrong, even going up against his own government. With lots of cover ups and a secret that needs to be told the story stayed entertaining and it's frightening how easy perceptions can be manipulated. Great for stories like this one but scary in the real world where it could so easily be happening right now, in some government basement someone could be reshaping the world. I can't wait to see what this author has in store for Reznick next.

However some the lawyer says catches his curiosity and after checking Reznick pays the operations director of the CIA a visit in the psychiatric hospital. The tale he claim is true, has Reznick questioning his sanity because if true thousand of people are going to die. The government is preparing to start a war and blame another country just to get there hands on oil. If true lots of innocent people will get caught in the cross hairs. In order to try and stop it Reznick will have to verify it's true but with people being permanently silenced, will be be next
I liked the narrator. I have heard him read a number of different books and I can see why he is popular with so many different authors.

I've read several military action thrillers by Scottish novelist J. B. Turner in his "Jon Reznick" and "American Ghost" series, including his 2013 debut novel, "Hard Road", Jon Reznick Book 1, about an American black-ops specialist, former Delta Force NCO, who takes high-risk freelance assignments when agencies require plausible deniability.
Compelling Military Action Character.
In my Dec. 13, 2022 review of "Hard Fire", Jon Reznick #10, I noted about Reznick:
Never one for flowery language, nor does he seem to have much use for rules which he often flouts. A bit rough around the edges, with no gray areas in his beliefs. Flawed, foolhardy, gets hurt, bleeds, occasionally goofs up. In other words, a compelling military action character.
Nary a dull moment in a Jon Reznick novel.
None of that tired assiduity to Political Correctness.
Just pure, unadulterated military thriller literature.
But. I. Was. Wrong.

"Operation Yellow Rain" ━Guyana, Venezuela
For his 16th Jon Reznick novel, Scottish author J. B. Turner comes up with one of those CIA special access programs which he coins "Operation Yellow Rain".
"Operation Yellow Rain" would have the US government conduct a convoluted "false flag" operation. And kill Americans!
Attack the oil fields of Venezuela's neighbor to the east, Guyana, and, then have Delta Force commandos deliberately kill American citizens. Subsequently, pin the blame on Maduro and Venezuela in order to provide an excuse for a full scale invasion against Venezuela.
An utterly boneheaded battle plan at face value, that Turner would have his aging protagonist unwittingly take the bait.
Jon Reznick, "ghost" freelance hitman, NCO in the chain of command, idle with apparently nothing much going on for himself, somehow gets an inkling of the "false flag" operation under the most twisted of circumstances from unelected CIA Deep State operatives, nicely window-dressed for the novel.
Reznick gets all fired up, prepared to take matters far above his pay grade into his own hands, purportedly to "save American lives", as though his own former Delta Force brothers would be savages and butchers.
NOT MUCH military action in this edition at all, as Jon Reznick goes into an ill-disguised TDS tirade and gets into cahoots with a reporter of the far-left failing New York Times of all people, presumably the one who got a Pulitzer for her pseudo "Russia" story.
Inevitably, the novel, (saturated with the "need to have a meal, need to have a scotch" fillers), fizzles out, as the pair of seditionists find themselves in the hoosegow, under interrogation, with the finale having the once formidable covert hitman listening to CNN, and drowning out his sorrows in Scotch whiskey like a Steely Dan song.
A big disappointment for military thriller aficionados.

For his 16th Jon Reznick novel, Scottish author J. B. Turner comes up with one of those CIA special access programs which he coins "Operation Yellow Rain".
"Operation Yellow Rain" would have the US government conduct a convoluted "false flag" operation. And kill Americans!
Attack the oil fields of Venezuela's neighbor to the east, Guyana, and, then have Delta Force commandos deliberately kill American citizens. Subsequently, pin the blame on Maduro and Venezuela in order to provide an excuse for a full scale invasion against Venezuela.
An utterly boneheaded battle plan at face value, that Turner would have his aging protagonist unwittingly take the bait.
Jon Reznick, "ghost" freelance hitman, NCO in the chain of command, idle with apparently nothing much going on for himself, somehow gets an inkling of the "false flag" operation under the most twisted of circumstances from unelected CIA Deep State operatives, nicely window-dressed for the novel.
Reznick gets all fired up, prepared to take matters far above his pay grade into his own hands, purportedly to "save American lives", as though his own former Delta Force brothers would be savages and butchers.
NOT MUCH military action in this edition at all, as Jon Reznick goes into an ill-disguised TDS tirade and gets into cahoots with a reporter of the far-left failing New York Times of all people, presumably the one who got a Pulitzer for her pseudo "Russia" story.
Inevitably, the novel, (saturated with the "need to have a meal, need to have a scotch" fillers), fizzles out, as the pair of seditionists find themselves in the hoosegow, under interrogation, with the finale having the once formidable covert hitman listening to CNN, and drowning out his sorrows in Scotch whiskey like a Steely Dan song.
A big disappointment for military thriller aficionados.

Each book is a self-contained story so you don’t need to read them all in order and the recurring characters are self-explanatory. This one has Reznick investigating a government conspiracy that pits him against his former employers the CIA & FBI.
Reznick is contacted by a lawyer representing a senior government official who has been detained in a psychiatric institution and is claiming that the CIA is about to undertake a false flag operation in South America, which will kill hundreds of innocent Americans, in order to gain control of Venezuela for their natural resources. Initially sceptical, Jon is convinced when people start dying under suspicious circumstances, and ropes in his journalist friend Caroline in the hopes of preventing it.
This series is usually full of action, intrigue and suspense, but unfortunately there’s precious little of either here - most of the plot involves Reznick visiting person after person trying to convince them of the threat, talking a lot, deciding they don’t have enough evidence so finding someone else to talk to. This made the pacing very slow. We know all along what the conspiracy is - a depressingly believable scheme given the current administration - and who the bad guys are, so the only suspense is in whether Jon can stay alive long enough to thwart them. A definite must read series
I have to say that I have absolutely loved this series since the first book I read. Throughout the series there has not been a story that didn't end within that specific book (at least not that I can remember), until now. As much as I love reading this series, had I realized that this story would continue into the next book, I definitely would have waited for the next book release before reading them together. Sorry, I absolutely hate cliffhangers. I realize that some stories are just too long to fit into one book, I can appreciate that, but I usually just wait for the next one. Unfortunately, I didn't read the premise of this book - completely my fault! Lol! I'm really looking forward to reading the next book, as I believe it's certainly going to be an explosive read!
As for this book, it was intense, extremely complex, mysterious, and intriguing - just like the previous stories have been! One of the many things that I love about this series is the character's (Jon Reznick) sense of honor, his personal moral code, patriotism, and take no prisoners attitude. His only weakness is the love of his life, his daughter Lauren. However, she's definitely no shrinking violet - like father, like daughter! They're both powerhouses. It's what makes this series so amazing and intriguing. It's certainly not a story or series to be missed!
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and exceptional author.

The story starts with Reznick in New Orleans visiting a terminally ill Delta comrade. While there, he receives a call from a lawyer whose client wants to meet with him. After learning more about the client, he agrees to a meet with the client. He flies to D.C. and discovers that the client, a Deputy Director of the CIA is in a psychiatric hospital. The story Jon hears has him wondering since it contains highly classified info. On leaving the hospital, Jon now begins the task of trying to verify the information. He contacts his friend, Meyerstein, and tells her the story. He then asks what he should do with it. She sets up a meeting for Jon to talk to the responsible IG party. After his meeting, he then makes arrangements to meet with Caroline Sullivan, a friend and journalist for the NY Times.
Read along and discover what dangers Jon and Caroline have to face as they hunt for verification. Discover the parties that are striving to keep the information from leaking and how far they are willing. Learn what is the item that is so important that several people wind up dead as a result.

I enjoyed the premise of this thriller but found the execution somewhat flat. I didn’t realise that this was #16 in a series featuring Jon Reznick, ex-military, ex-CIA, black ops specialist, but I don’t think that was the problem. He comes across as highly trained, smart and able to take care of himself and I found him very likeable. However, what I found frustrating is the way he behaves after he is informed about a highly secretive, US government plan for a false flag operation that will result in the death of Americans and the subsequent invasion of another country.
Jon knows the sort of people he is going to be up against but instead of being careful to hide his meetings and protect his contacts he meets consecutively with one person after another in their homes and public places which seemed very naïve and not utilising the spycraft to which he is supposed to be adept. I kept waiting for him to have a back-up clever plan that he was keeping secret but that wasn't the case. What subsequently happened after his less than clandestine approach to secrecy was not in the least surprising and I felt we were just waiting for it to happen. The ending was also disappointingly open-ended, but maybe this will be resolved in the next episode.

I came across this author and the Jon Reznick series starting with the last novel, “Hard Sun”, and immediately loved this character and the authors writing style. There was literally not a down moment in the entire novel. How do things go this time around? Awesome! Well, for me, the reader. Definitely not Jon Reznick. No, things are not going well for him at all.
Part of his problem is that the country that he has given his life to may be up to some shenanigans and he believes it needs to be exposed. Even if it costs him his life. My issue in reading this book was that I too love this country. I try not to be blind but coming from a family that has served this country proudly, I have heard stories that I have struggled with. This novel really brings that to the forefront.
This is where J. B. Turner shines as an author. I never felt like he was writing a political novel. Instead, he has put his protagonist into a moral quandary and lets Reznick and the reader wrestle with it. Absolutely brilliant.

Hard Shadows was another gripping audiobook from J.B. Turner that kept me listening at every opportunity. Even though it’s part of the Jon Reznick series, it would work well as a standalone if you haven’t yet read any of the other books in the series.
When Reznick is asked to look into the suspicious confinement of a senior CIA official, he’s drawn into a dangerous investigation involving corruption, hidden agendas and people prepared to go to any lengths to protect the truth. The plot moved at a great pace and there were enough twists to keep me guessing throughout.
Reznick continues to be a character I enjoy spending time with. He’s calm under pressure, fiercely loyal and never gives up, making him an easy protagonist to root for. The supporting characters added plenty to the story without distracting from the central mystery.
Jeffrey Kafer’s narration was excellent, bringing the characters to life and adding real energy to the action. His performance made it very easy to become completely immersed in the story.
A fast-paced thriller with likeable characters, plenty of suspense and narration that really enhanced the experience.

It seems he has information he would like to impart to Jon and only to him. When Jon checks the man out and discovers he was a CIA Director of Operations, Jon agrees to go and meet with him.
After hearing his story of what he discovered, and verifying large parts of it, Reznick is all in on trying to stop the concert actions and save the illegally hospitalized director.
And so begins another riveting Reznick story of corruption and clandestine operations at the highest government levels that could affect the US for years to come.
Riveting suspense, action and all too easy to believe government callous and cruel disregard for the very people they have sworn to protect and defend.
Reznick is at his best, once again, on the side of what is right.

Rezneck is in New Orleans visiting an old friend dying of cancer. He gets a call from a Lawyer in Washington, DC. The lawyer had been asked by Meyerstein to call Jon for his client Stephen Leahy. Reznick calls Trevelle and finds out that Leahy is at the CIA directorate of operations. However, Trevelle finds out that Leahy is not in a mental hospital and was admitted uner the name Toby Breslin. When Reznick gets to the hospital he is taken to see Toby. Jon has a fairly long talk with Toby/Stephen, and soon sees that there is nothing about Stephen's mentality which would require him to be in a mental hospital. Stephen explains to Jon that there are folks in the CIA who wish to attack Guyana and Venezuela to take over the oil fields. This would involve killing a huge number of Americans who live and work in Guyana and Venezuela. Reznick also finds out the Leahy's father who is retired from the CIA was killed shortly after Stephen was hospitalized. When Reznick is attacked by two men, he realizes this won't be an easy case to handle. However, he doesn't give up.

This was a tough one for Jon. He's drawn into things that are none of his business, but because he is who he is and on the side of right, he feels like he has to act when he learns what he does. It's crazy though because it seems like everyone that has the knowledge dies along the way and by trying to do the right thing Jon puts himself, his friends and others in danger. Even at the end it seems like these bad guys win and Jon and those that helped him are still in danger because of what they know. You know the bad guys want to get rid of everyone that has this knowledge, just to be in the clear themselves. It will be interesting to see where Jon goes from here.

This is the first Jon Reznick book I have read and I get the sense that this book is trying something different to the earlier books in the series. There was a lot of set up involved before the action kicked in. The plot was exciting and I enjoyed the geopolitical background. The ending was left open, clearly indicating that the next book will take up where this one ends.

While visiting a dying friend in New Orleans Reznick receives a weird phone call from someone he does not know, asking him to visit someone who's been committed. Why? That's the very important question that leads Jon down a rabbit hole of his own. Will Jon follow up or will he walk away? Close to current affairs
Not the usual Reznick book in my opinion. A little slower than usual and the story seemed to drag for me! However, I'm glad we'll see more of Jon. And I hope his character is back to being the character I love to read about. The storyline was very close to some of what's happening in the world currently, and that's quite scary.

I found this latest book interesting and always look forward to reading his new one. Reznick gets an urgent phone call a senior CIA agent Leary is being held hostage He uncovered a government plan to do with oil reserves.
Reznick is skeptical, assassins are closing in, time is running out.
This book is filled with action that doesn't stop till the last page.
I enjoyed it and recommend it.
Reznick is skeptical, assassins are closing in, time is running out.
This book is filled with action that doesn't stop till the last page.
I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Compelling Read
This was an excellent Reznick novel. It had a touch of real world geopolitics as it touched on blowing up suspected narco boats and the unsettling situation in Venezuela. I was a bit disappointed in the ending as it really wasn’t a true ending. Maybe this plot is going to be continued in the next book.

Great Book
Once again, Resnick takes us on a journey like no other. A hard-core patriot bat is being hunted by members of the country that he loves and serves. He never gets bitter considering there is more rotten apples in our government's branches than any of us would care to know.

I suspected a non conclusive ending as the story was winding down with few pages left to come to a conclusion. I feel slightly tricked into staying with the story knowing that it probably would lead to another novel. An empty feeling with the hope that the follow up will come to conclusions. A rather cheap trick by this author.

This book is a very realistic betrayal of what could happen if the federal government did not have checks and balances throughout thr system. It is also why civilians are in charge ultimately of the military as secretaries of the services. You will not want to put thr book down it is so compelling.

Five Stars
I have read all of the Jon Reznick books in order. I have enjoyed them all. This particular book has been the most worrying and thought provoking. It is a difficult read because so much of it could possibly be true. I shall say no more other than it receives another five star review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
