This is why virgin heroine’s get so much crap from some readers. Authors like this decide that because their heroine is a virgin that means she should be stupid too. Come on who goes into a strangers house and when told to strips for them?! The whole betraying body theme from what I read was not erotic but actually embarrassing and degrading to all self respecting women out there!!

I picked up this quick freebie to bide some time between other book releases that I was waiting on. At just over 100 pages, it was a really quick read. The first serial of six, it definitely piqued my interest.

Lacey agrees to deliver a cake for a rich man's birthday party as a favor to her friend. She needs the extra money and its pays well, so she agrees.

Arriving at the party, she soon discovers that this is no ordinary birthday party. It's a sex party. By chance, she meets Jake Carver, the billionaire guest of honor. Only, he mistakes Lacey for his "gift".

In no time flat, Lacey is disrobing and following Jake's orders. For supposedly being an inexperienced virgin, she sure was pretty easy. Before long, she's agreed to assume the role of his "gift" anyway.

Rushing from his penthouse to her night job, Lacey is consumed with thoughts of what she'll do with Jake in the morning. After a full night of work, she steps out of the bar and gets kidnapped! Apparently Jake was upset that she didn't follow his instructions to get a full night's sleep.

As expected, the book ends on a cliffy. Despite the implausible storyline, I was dying to know what happened. This story became a guilty pleasure. So, I go to Amazon to download the second part, only they don't have a Kindle version for the next book! WTF! I could buy the paperback for a whopping $10.99 for another 100 pages or so. That's not happening! So, I'm sitting here frustrated and wishing I had never picked up the first one. Argh!

Wow...what a sexy series! I am huge Aubrey Dark fan, and she totally didn't let me down with this series!

Jake Carville is a sexy, broken and possessive alpha. Totally book boyfriend material!

And I'm always a fan of heroines who aren't a size zero with supermodel looks!

If you want a quick read that literally gives you the chills (the good chills!, then this series is for you!

DNF @ 46%.

This story was BAD, I mean really awful. The h comes to a party to deliver a cake. She meets a guy who immediately upon seeing her tells her to take her clothes off. What does the h do? She says, "oh well, this guy is HOT and I'm a virgin so why not." I was so angry, I wanted to reach into the kindle and knock this airhead out. Will not be reading this awful series.

This is a spicy short serial about a billionaire on his birthday and he gets a $2000.00 cake and unwilling virgin Lacey.
This story will suck you in. The characters are very easy to relate to.

Review of serial installments 1-3.

I normally wouldn't have picked up this one, but since I've loved some of Aubrey's other novels, and the first volume was a freebie, I gave it a shot. I wouldn't say it is as good as her other books, but it was decent nevertheless.

Lacey is nearly broke when she accepts a job from her friend. Lacey is to deliver a $2000 cake to Jake Carville's birthday party, and when she arrives, Jake is very happy with his present. Ah... but not the cake: He mistakenly believes Lacey is a gift, courtesy of a friend, and Lacey is soon swept up in a kinky world that fascinates the inexperienced girl.

Jake is very alpha, very self assured and more forceful than most when it comes to acquiring who he wants to possess. (In fact, I guess you would have to be a billionaire to buy your way out of all the problems that could have ensued when he decides to fetch Lacey the way he does... ) But Jake's also got a vulnerable side. In a manner of speaking, he reminds me a little of Christian Grey, though less out of control. He is also not the mass murdering psychopath I've come to expect from Aubrey's books, in fact he's fairly normal, all things considered. The blurb makes this book seem darker than it is. If you want dark, try Mine or His instead. Or better yet, Duet in the Dark.

The smut is decent, but I would have liked to know more about why he is so obsessed with keeping Lacey "pure".

I give the story 3.5 ★ as a whole.

*Honest Review in exchange of an ARC*

After reading Mine (His, #2) by Aubrey Dark , which was a pain... a sadistic pain (pleasure-pain-pleasure-pain-pain), this trilogy was really refreshing, even it's dark, it flows wonderfully and you are expecting for more, which Ms. Aubrey delivers perfectly!

Delivering a cake wasn't so much exciting before. It's all I'm saying!

If you want to read something good, quick, and dark, this is it!

Contracted to provide a custom $2000 birthday cake from her BFF's bakery, Lacey is persuaded to deliver the cake though it's stipulated the person delivering must be female and dressed to the gills as the party is being held at a prominent central New York city penthouse suite.

Arriving without incident, Lacey is conflicted when female attendees, including herself, are required to sign a nondisclosure agreement, speak only when spoken to, and required to wear a collar. "Hey, I'm just here to deliver a cake. Where's the kitchen?"

Taking a wrong turn, Lacey finds herself in the owner's private art gallery mesmerized by the works displayed though when caught being in this restricted area, the birthday boy mistakenly thinks she's his gift and proceeds to unwrap his present. Clearing up the confusion, Lacey agrees to return the next day as she needs to get to her night job.

Leaving work at 4 am making plans for her imminent day date, Lacey finds herself drugged and abducted. Waking up, chained to a bed, Lacey discovers the birthday boy is behind her abduction and has plans of his own.

This is a serial series that includes the first three individual installments in one book.

Having read other works by this author I was interested in this story premise and the fact the serial series was included in one book. The premise of an older man/younger woman BDSM that included a dark theme and a secondary mystery element. Yup. Works for me. :)

The story started out hot and heavy as billionaire Jake Carville mistakes virginal Lacey as a submissive gifted to him by a friend for his birthday. The thing is Jake has skeletons in his closets so his tastes in BDSM tend to run to the darker side thus any submissive provided needed to be aware of that. Lacey obviously wasn't but she liked her first taste and wanted more thus it was agreed to return the next day. The story goes on from there and includes multiple BDSM scenes that were pretty intense and sensual with a side of woopie.

If only the author had kept to that formula and developed the primary lust and duel art appreciation the two characters had I would have been a happy reader and one clicked the spin off series and follow ups. Alas, I found myself waffling as the world building, time lines, and BDSM elements just didn't make sense. One non-spoiler example. Lacey is a street artist. Leading up to this actual example is a series of scenes that were toe curling fun, of the adult persuasion, yet this actual scene started at sunrise that culminated in Lacey producing a half dozen paintings then to Jake bringing a breakfast tray for the two. That just didn't make sense.

As for the BDSM adult content erotic romance scenes. Banging my head against a wall here in that the author premised a dark romance theme. While I agree the actual scenes were sometimes intense and other times sensual with a side of sadistic overtones, I really didn't feel that dark applies. Further, no safe words were ever mentioned or used and to portray Jake as a legitimate BDSM Dom was unconvincing. Lacey I can totally get on board with as she was vanilla AND a virgin so her actions were expected, though her character definitely had flaws in street smarts even though her back story mentioned self defense & dealing with brothers. Bottom line is that this had more a fantasy kidnap/abduction feel with a role playing theme.

The secondary character standouts were Lacey's friend Steph (who is a main character in the spin off serial series Mr. Black's Proposal series) with Lucas, Jake's friend. The other notable secondary character is Andy, Steph's brother and partner in her bakery business. Now him, I can't wait for to shine in his own series though for those who do need to know it would be an m-m series. Yum Yum.

Attempting to sum up my opinion on this book might lead others to think I didn't enjoy it. I did but having read way too many books than I can keep track of, I require stories that include fictional world building and details that make sense along with adult content romance that pulls me in and become vested so that I can believe the characters earned their HEA/HFN status and not just because an author said so. In a fantasy world sort of thing, I did appreciate this story though some portions were problematic. I am definitely going to look into grabbing Steph and Lucas story as the teaser at the end of this book (alert: the actual His Gift ends at 86% progress with the remainder of the book featuring teasers for the author's other works) I definitely am interested.

Lacey Miller was a curvy girl who is still a virgin who is totally insecure about her body but she would do anything for her friend she agrees to deliver a cake that her best friend has been paid to bake for a millionaire's birthday party but she can't leave the shop to deliver and her brother isn't available so Lacey is the one now Lacey is every bit the tomboy but she puts on a dress a makes a delivery to a very expensive high rise belonging to Jake Carville not knowing to deliver the cake in the back of the building she goes in the front but she has to sign a no tell statement in order to get upstairs once she gets up stairs she was told where the kitchen was but Lacey just could not get there because she saw a painting on the wall in a room where the door was partially open and she steps in and her life changes forever.

His Gift (A Dark Billionaire Romance Part 1) by Aubrey Dark
** I received a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for my honest review **
Absolutley loved it! Outstanding writting and well-developed characters. Lacey is such a spunky, sweet character. Jake seems to be the typical sexy Alpha male with a hint of something unique. Part 1 closes with a titillating cliffhanger which made me want to jump right into Part 2.

I have read a few other books by this author so I thought I would give it a try. I don't feel like this is a very dark romance at all..at least so far or compared to her other works . It's a very quick read, split up into three parts...sigh...the way the author has ended the first part definitely makes you want to read the next installment. The story in itself is good so far. Yay for the KU program!

This series is excellent, so much better than a lot of other stuff that's out there. Each installment is a full 100 or so pages and only .99 (or free on Kindle Unlimited) so it's not one of those ridiculolus 2.99 per episode for 49 pgs kind of thing, and the writing is really well done, with complex characters. Very much worth it. Reminded me of the Crossfire series and Up in the Air series. It's one of the few novella series that I've been pulled into (read three so far).

Vikki’s Musings

I found this book through the Kindle Unlimited program and borrowed it. I also downloaded the audio version for $1.99. I have not read a book by Aubrey Dark before, but the book description sounded great, and I love to find new authors, so I took a chance. I thorough enjoyed His Gift and plan to read the next book in this series.

When Lacey Miller agrees to deliver a birthday cake for her BFF, the last thing she expects is to be mistaken for Jake Carville’s gift. On her way to the what she believes is the kitchen, she stumbles upon a fantastic art galley with painting by one of her favorite artists.

Not used to high heels, Lacey trips and the $2000 birthday cake ends up on the most gorgeous man she has ever seen. Can a case of mistaken identity lead to a forever kind of love?

His Gift is very fast paced. The story line is compelling and the BDSM elements are extremely well-written. In fact, the entire book is well-written. It is written in the 1st person POV of Lacey, the heroine. While I am normally not a huge fan of 1st person, Ms. Dark is able to engage me, even though I didn’t get the hero’s point of view.

Lacey is a spunky kid heroine. She is street smart, feisty, determined, and yet naïve at the same time. Jake doesn’t know what hit him when he accidentally thinks she is his birthday gift. Surprisingly, Lacey turns out to be the perfect submissive for him.

Jake Carville is a tortured soul, my favorite kind of hero. Again, even though, I do not have a chance to read/hear his introspection, Ms. Dark clearly shows his pain and anguish over the tragic loss of his family.

Personally, I can’t begin to understand why a person would enjoy pain and find it a turn on, but I am fascinated by BDSM elements, as long as they don’t go too far. There were a few scenes that did make me twitch, but again, still riveting.

I listened to the audio version performed by Stephanie Rose, and I really enjoyed her narrative. She reads with a wealth of emotion and did a fantastic job with Jake’s voice, which is rare with many female narrators. I will definitely look for other books narrated by Ms. Rose.

If you find romances with BDSM elements as intriguing as I do, then you will love His Gift. This book also has a great romance. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this fabulous series. Unlike many contemporary series, that are continuing, this book does have a happy for now ending, which I loved. Happy reading!

Ms. Dark is a goddess of dark romance I worship! In my eyes, she can do no wrong. I was stunned to find, this glittering jewel had slipped past my radar. I loved the artist’s perspective that added an extra dimension to this story, and the unlikely beginning. It felt fresh and real.
Lacey is a small town girl who moved from Iowa to New York to make as an artist. Struggling to survive she works two jobs, and barley scraps by. Despite it, she’s sassy, fun, and endearing. When her best friends offers to pay her for a cake delivery to a party, she accepts. It’s here her life changes when she meets billionaire Jake.
I don’t want to give away all Jake’s secret. But he is dark, delicious, damaged, and yet at the same time vulnerable, at least when it comes to Lacey. Jake is caught unaware when the woman sent to deliver his cake is mistaken for the present sent by a friend. The innocent woman with curves, and grit, make him break his rules, and he knows then and there she has to be his.
I will say this is a cliff hanger, but all parts of the series are available and well worth the money. If you’ve never read Ms. Dark, I implore you to pick this one as your intro, and keep in mind it’s available for free via Kindle Unlimited.

Lacey is an innocent, aspiring artist from Iowa, navigating life in the No Apple and trying not to get evicted. Her best friend, Steph, gives her a job to deliver a very expensive cake, and when she gets to the venue......well, let's just say it's not what she expected. Soon she's dragged - accidentally - into a world that, admittedly, intrigues her....but only because of one man....a man she knows nothing about aside from his name and sexual proclivity, but who knows what to do with her body. She wasn't meant for him, but she's now become his gift.

I thought this was an OK read. I wanted more, but I guess it had to be quick and slow-to-warm-up all at the same time because each book is a Novella. I wish Lacey would have stood up more to Jake....withstood a little more. She gave in so easily and I wish there was a spitfire in her. I'm eager to find our what Jake found in her, what endeared him to her that made him choose her over the blonde bimbo who was his real gift. He was a but abrasive, but I guess it's his persona. I don't know enough of both characters to make a judgment, but I do want to see where the story goes.

An OK read with OK characters.

Lacey is tough, working multiple jobs to survive in the city while trying to find a way to pursue her passion for art. Lacey is a great friend so she agrees to deliver a birthday cake for her best friend, the baker, at a swanky party in a penthouse while wearing a dress. What she doesn't expect is to cross paths with Jake, the birthday boy, who is enchanted with Lacey's passion for art and innocence. Jake isn't sure what to make of Lacey when he finds her in his gallery but he realizes he wants to possess her. Will Lacey be able to play Jake's game? Can she find it in her to submit to his dominant demands?

DNF.

The first chapter confused me. Then the second and third chapters bored me, the conversations were so boring. The book should have started at the end of chapter 3 where's she's there ready to deliver the cake.
I found the writing to be cheesy and immature in places.

The way she acts and talks when she sees the penthouse apartment was so immature, i thought i was reading a teen novella.

I'm going to read Reasonable Doubt: Volume 1 again. It's well written with great dialogue and an interesting male character.

This was not what I expected. It was better. I'm grateful to the author for not rushing straight to sex between the main characters (sorry to those who were expecting some). This allows us to see some type of buildup, some form of chemistry. I'm not completely sold on the chemistry but I'm intrigued enough to read book 2.

Surprisingly, despite her tomboy virginal ways, Lacey is not an annoying female lead. She had spunk and enough qualities to make her likeable. Jake on the other hand is still a mystery. Sexy. Green-eyed. Dark hair. Rich. Appreciates art. Dominant. Into bondage. And??? Does anyone else think he's the tag artist Kage that Lacey admires and respects?

Another stupid virgin story.

I've said this time and time again I am so sick and tired of these virgin heroine who turn into nympho stories.

The story started with the virgin Midwestern heroine running an errand for her friend and from there it just goes downhill. She goes to a party to deliver a $2k cake and when asked to wear a collar, she doesn't bother to ask questions. And that ladies and gentlemen was my queue that the story would take a nose dive.

A dark beginning, fast moving story

The first chapter threw me because it started with a bondage thing. Was that a dream? I'm still nut sure,, but then Lacey's story started, and it was just getting good! The characters felt real and the story builds. I am hooked right now and just have to continue to the next part of the story! It's a little bit twisted and so far the kink level is on the low side, but it's a good read!

Who knew delivering a cake for her baker friend could have got Lacey into so much trouble. Jake the billionaire has certain tastes sexually, and the minute he spots Lacey he has to have her. Even to go as far as kidnapping her.
This is a very quick read that give the reader a glimpse of what's to come.
