You might want the physical edition of this manga just to prove that it actually exists. Otherwise it’s most likely to stay stuck in your head until the last page and then get lost amidst thoughts of better series and crippling existential dread (that last one could just be me).
This is like the Nerf version of a romantic comedy; all edges safely rounded and no chance of anybody getting poked. It’s all meringue, no lemon pie, and it could stand to have a little lemon pie in there.
Luna and Ootori hang out together constantly and they barely manage a blush, even though it’s pretty obvious that they’re going to be actually a couple by the end of the manga.
Ootori is one of the most banal saltines of a male lead that we’ve had in a while. He is incredibly good at pushing himself to work hard for others, which is not exactly the most impressive character trait. Apparently he’s good at art too?
Luna has no discernible personality besides being a vampire who can’t drink blood well. She hangs out with her friends and spends time with cats and, despite trying to imply there are issues to deal with, not much else.
Her mom shows up and it’s impressive the amount of stuff that happens here that just bounces hopelessly off me without leaving a dent. Everything is so frothy that nothing matters. I don’t often think a rival is needed, but this needs a shot in the arm from somewhere. Anywhere, really.
A couple things work. Some of the art is nice - there’s a great shot of Luna flying at the end of the festival that shows how much fun she’s having. The visit to her house has some good stuff as well. A different girl is being accepted for who she is, so I can’t fault the message either.
Otherwise it’s perilously close to a sedative made out of words and art. I said last time that this might be too dull for me to continue with and I stand by that. These ‘super special girl and boring donut’ stories have evolved a little bit and comparing this to something like Gals Can’t Be Kind to Otaku!? leaves it coming up woefully short.
2.5 stars - mediocrity right down the middle, rounded up for being nice. It is harmless, harmless stuff, but it’s one vampire story (wait for it, wait for it…) that could definitely (almost…) use a little more bite (nailed it!).
